The Bible Study Podcast, Episode 841. Today

0:44

the Bible Study Podcast continues the study

0:46

of the book of Psalms with Psalm 105.

0:57

Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.

0:59

I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Before

1:01

we get into Psalm 105, let's

1:04

listen to a word from this sponsor.

1:06

I found myself on a ledge three

1:08

stories high at some condominiums, contemplating

1:11

my life and struggling to understand

1:14

my purpose. Have you ever found yourself

1:16

on a ledge? My name is Billy Yancey. I

1:18

am a caring father, mentor, and

1:20

friend. In my new podcast, Billy

1:23

and the Goat, I share the life-changing events

1:25

that shaped who I am today to remind

1:27

you that no matter how far you've fallen,

1:30

God can help you get up and

1:32

thrive. Listen now at lifeaudio.com.

1:37

Psalm 105 doesn't have any preamble

1:40

in telling us anything about it. It's

1:42

a longer psalm, so I'm going to do

1:45

it in its entirety. It's 45 verses

1:47

long. Give praise to the

1:50

Lord, proclaim his name, make known among

1:52

the nations what he has done. Sing

1:54

to him, sing praise to him, tell

1:57

of all his wonderful acts. Glory

1:59

in his

1:59

holy name, let the hearts of those who

2:02

seek the Lord rejoice. Look

2:04

to the Lord and his strength. Seek

2:06

his face always." And

2:08

so we start in praise, praising God

2:10

for who he is, praising God

2:12

for what he has done, and

2:15

what else can we do but sing praise to God,

2:17

as the psalmist is telling us. And

2:20

glory is named, let the hearts of those who seek

2:22

the Lord rejoice. You're

2:25

listening to a Bible study podcast today, so I'm going

2:27

to include you in those people

2:29

who are seeking the Lord. And

2:32

so I pray that you will be rejoicing this

2:34

week, and that's what the psalmist is saying. Look

2:37

to the Lord in his strength. Seek his

2:39

face always. Remember

2:41

the wonders he has done, his miracles

2:43

and the judgments he pronounced. You

2:45

his servants, the descendants of Abraham,

2:47

his chosen ones, the children

2:49

of Jacob, he is the Lord our

2:51

God. His judgments are

2:54

in all the earth. So remember

2:56

what he's done. We do a lot of that in psalms.

2:58

We do a lot of that. The prophets

3:01

tell us to do that as well. His miracle

3:03

and his judgments. So all

3:05

the things that he told us in terms of the law,

3:08

as well as all the things he did with the people of

3:10

God, especially of course in this

3:12

context, the people of the Old

3:14

Testament. But we can certainly remember

3:17

what he has done in the New Testament and in

3:19

our lives and in everything in between. You

3:22

his servants, descendants of Abraham, his chosen

3:24

ones, the children of Jacob. And so

3:27

obviously this is a psalm that originally

3:30

was intended for the

3:32

people of God and that meant the children of Israel.

3:35

We believe that that has been extended

3:37

now to those of us who are not Jewish through

3:40

the work of what Jesus did. And

3:43

he's the Lord. His judgments are in all the earth.

3:45

I thought that was interesting. We hear

3:47

about that you're the chosen ones.

3:50

You're the people of God. You the people

3:52

who are Jewish. And yet the

3:54

psalmist even is going on to say his

3:57

judgments are in all the earth. God is not limited.

4:00

to Israel. God is not limited to Judah.

4:03

God is not a small God, a regional

4:05

God. God is the God of all the earth.

4:08

He remembers his covenant forever, the

4:11

promises he made for a thousand generations,

4:14

the covenant he made with Abraham, the

4:16

oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed

4:19

it to Jacob as a decree, to

4:21

Israel as an everlasting covenant.

4:24

To you I will give the land of Canaan

4:27

as the portion you will inherit. So

4:30

he's saying that God made promises to Abraham,

4:32

to Isaac, to Jacob, to

4:35

Jacob's sons, and

4:37

that he remembers those. He'll

4:39

remember them for a thousand generations,

4:41

and if you think of a generation as being something

4:44

like 20 to 40 years, we're talking about for

4:46

a very long time. And

4:49

he confirms his promises that

4:51

he's made, and the promises that he's

4:53

talking about here are the promise of the Promised

4:55

Land. That promise that

4:58

takes them quite a while from

5:00

the promise being made to Abraham until they

5:02

go into the Promised Land. Something like 500 years,

5:04

but God remembered those

5:07

promises he made to Abraham and fulfilled

5:09

them in his time. When

5:13

they were but few in number, few indeed,

5:15

and strangers in it, they wandered

5:17

from nation to nation, from one kingdom to

5:20

another. He allowed no one to oppress

5:22

them, for their sake he rebuked kings.

5:25

Do not touch my appointed ones, do

5:27

my prophets no harm. And

5:30

if you think about it, God promises Abraham

5:32

his descendants will be as

5:34

many as the sands on the seashore. Well,

5:37

obviously not just his direct

5:39

descendants. That's certainly going to

5:41

kill Sarah, his wife, who

5:45

only manages to have who has one

5:47

son, but not that many. And

5:49

so it takes a while to develop

5:52

from a family of three

5:55

into a tribe. And

5:58

so during that time, as the wandering

6:00

around as they're spending time in Egypt, as

6:02

they're wandering in the desert, God is

6:04

protecting them as they're growing

6:07

into a people that can fill the

6:09

Promised Land. He

6:11

called down famine on the land and destroyed

6:14

all their supplies of food. He sent a

6:16

man before them. Joseph sold as

6:18

a slave. They bruised his feet with shackles.

6:20

His neck was put in irons till

6:23

what he foretold came to pass, till

6:25

the word of the Lord proved him true. The

6:27

king sent and released him. The ruler

6:30

of peoples set him free. He made

6:32

him master of his household,

6:34

ruler over all he possessed, to

6:36

instruct his princes as he pleased and

6:39

teach his elders wisdom.

6:41

And so we're remembering not

6:43

just Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but

6:46

that one son who was sent ahead into

6:48

Egypt. Now his brothers would

6:50

have told you he was sold into slavery in Egypt.

6:53

Or maybe they wouldn't tell you that. Maybe they'd hide that

6:55

from you as they did from their father and

6:57

told them he died. But

7:00

Joseph later understood that

7:02

this was all part of God's plan. And

7:04

so that the psalmist is remembering

7:06

this plan of God of Joseph sold

7:08

into a slave raised up to be a ruler

7:11

under Pharaoh in Egypt. Then

7:15

Israel entered Egypt. Jacob resided

7:17

as a foreigner in the land of Ham. The

7:19

Lord made his people very fruitful. He

7:22

made them too numerous for their foes whose

7:24

hearts he turned to hate his people

7:27

to conspire against his servants. He

7:29

sent Moses his servant and Aaron whom

7:31

he had chosen. They performed his

7:33

signs among them his wonders in the land

7:36

of Ham. He sent darkness and

7:38

made the sky dark for had

7:40

they not rebelled against his words. He

7:42

turned their waters into blood, causing

7:45

their fish to die their land teamed

7:47

with frogs, which went up into

7:49

the bedrooms of their rulers. He spoke

7:52

and there came swarms of flies and

7:54

gnats throughout their country. He turned

7:56

their reign into hail with lightning throughout

7:59

their land. struck down their vines and

8:01

fig trees and shattered the

8:03

trees of their country. He spoke and the locusts

8:05

came, grasshoppers without number. They

8:08

ate up every green thing in their land, ate

8:11

up the produce of their soil. Then

8:13

he struck down all the firstborn in their land, their

8:16

first fruits of all their manhood. He

8:18

brought out Israel laden with silver

8:20

and gold, and from their tribes

8:23

no one faltered. Egypt was glad

8:25

when they left because dread of Israel

8:27

had fallen on them. And

8:30

so basically in these 15

8:32

or so verses we get the entire

8:35

story of that first part of the book

8:37

of Exodus from Moses

8:40

being called until the people are

8:42

at the Red Sea. And all

8:44

that God did and all those great wonders

8:46

and marvels and plagues that

8:49

were sent on Egypt to get Israel out

8:51

of Egypt. And so it says first

8:53

he caused them to be

8:55

numerous and he blessed them so

8:58

they grew numerous and so

9:00

much so that they were too

9:03

numerous. And so he is

9:05

setting them up for the situation

9:07

where they will become slaves and

9:09

then will get kicked out, birthed

9:12

as a nation as it were, out

9:15

of the crucible, out of the womb of Egypt.

9:18

He spread out a cloud as a covering and

9:21

a fire to give light at night. They asked

9:23

and he brought them quail. He fed

9:25

them well with the bread of heaven. He opened

9:27

the rock and water gushed out. It

9:30

flowed like a river in the desert. And

9:32

so we're now moving on through the book

9:35

of Exodus to how God was

9:37

able to care for his people in the wilderness,

9:39

care for his people in Sinai

9:42

as they traveled across it and then as they wandered

9:44

there. For he remembered

9:47

his holy promise given to his servant Abraham.

9:50

He brought out his people with rejoicing, the

9:52

chosen ones with shouts of joy. He

9:54

gave them the lands of the nations

9:57

and they fell heir to what

9:59

others had to offer. for that they might

10:01

keep his precepts and observe his

10:03

laws praise the Lord and so

10:06

this whole psalm

10:09

here is trying to remember basically

10:13

all of the things that have happened up

10:15

until entering in the

10:17

promised land so from Genesis

10:19

into Exodus into Joshua

10:23

are all recounted in this 45 verses

10:27

now

10:29

that's

10:30

it's great for us to sing songs like

10:32

this that praise God and remember the things

10:34

that he did especially to the people

10:36

of Israel but I also wonder if we shouldn't

10:39

in the same way remember what God has done

10:41

for us and remember how God has

10:44

been important in our lives and how God

10:46

has worked in our lives to give us

10:48

direction or guidance or deliverance

10:51

and should we in fact be making

10:53

psalms like this or songs or

10:55

poems or how are we going to remember

10:58

the things that God has done as

11:00

the psalmist is encouraging the

11:02

people of God the people of Israel

11:05

to do and with that we're going to end
