Game 5 of the NBA Finals was won by the Cleveland Cavaliers on the back of an all time great shooting night by Kyrie Irving and a dominant Lebron James performance. Is this the turning point for the Cavs in the series?
Kyrie and Lebron became the first teammates to both score 40+ points in the same game during an NBA finals. For Kyrie it does not stop there, he becomes the only other player to score more than 40 points on 70% shooting as well as being the first guard since Allen Iverson to have three consecutive 30+ point games in the NBA Finals. Kyrie showed off and showed out whilst his counterpart persisted as nothing but a passenger during this series.
For the Warriors, this is demoralising. A chance for them to win the NBA title on their home floor resulted in a 15-point loss. The unanimous MVP was largely irrelevant during this game, they failed to go on any major runs in the game. They made more 3’s, they had more rebounds, they shot better from the line and they still lost. Even at the start of the fourth quarter when Cleveland threatened to revert to ISO ball they failed to take advantage as they so have done. Of course we can argue that they were missing Draymond Green but this is quickly countered by Kevin Love scoring 2 points.
But we can’t give all the credit to the Warriors lacklustre defense, Lebron made shots he does not always make. He shot 50% from three and his jumper just kept falling. Kyrie went into god mode.
