Hey , brian Wright Show Nation . Welcome
0:02
inside the broadcast booth , brian Wright here , and welcome
0:04
into another edition of the Brian Wright Show Just coming
0:06
off a podcast that I did about motivation
0:08
versus discipline and the four
0:10
stages of psychological focus . I want to
0:12
build on that today and we're gonna
0:14
dive into a ten-part series . This is the part
0:16
one around traits of people
0:19
that are very indecisive
0:21
and lack discipline
0:23
, excuse me . So , last one , if you haven't listened , to
0:25
make sure you go back and listen to it . I think it'd be a good precursor
0:28
to diving into this ten-part series
0:30
with part one today . But the premise
0:33
and one of the things we talked about is how motivation
0:35
is crap . Motivation is a noun . It's not something
0:37
you do . It's only gonna last so long and
0:39
it's gonna last longer in certain people
0:42
than others , but it always putters out
0:44
Right . It is the discipline that inevitably
0:46
, is going to get you where you want to go
0:48
, regardless of those are life goals , career goals
0:51
, business goals , maybe all the above , whatever
0:53
it may be . It is the discipline
0:55
to make decisions around
0:58
the things that you can control and
1:00
be great at them , and that is much what
1:02
the psychology talks about around focus . It
1:04
is not about narrowing your focus , which I
1:06
said in the last podcast is very important
1:08
. You can't try to do 27 things
1:10
at once . That's not gonna work either . But the
1:13
whole psychology of focus does not focus
1:15
around what you're focused on . It
1:17
focuses around discipline and
1:20
having the discipline to make the right decisions
1:23
, to be great at what you can control
1:25
. You want to lose weight . You cannot control
1:27
the metabolism , you
1:29
can't control the weight scale , but
1:31
you absolutely can make the decision
1:33
to have the discipline
1:36
to do 20 push-ups
1:38
when you get out of bed in the morning , right To
1:40
eat healthy , to get in the gym
1:43
five more minutes a day than you may be already
1:45
, to get a little bit more cardio . In those
1:48
things you have to be disciplined at and that
1:50
is what's called having a purposeful focus
1:52
. As it relates to the four stages
1:54
of psychology in that podcast , one
1:57
of the things , if you look in the
1:59
bottom left-hand corner about the four
2:01
quadrants of Psychology around focus
2:04
is indecisiveness . Right
2:06
, that indecisiveness is inevitably what
2:08
is causing your , your
2:10
anxiety , your fear , your
2:13
lack of success , if you feel
2:15
scared of failure . Whatever it is , much
2:17
of that can be related back to being
2:19
indecisive . So I want to dive
2:21
into now is how you know what are
2:23
traits of people that do lack
2:25
the discipline of what I talked about , and
2:28
in part one we're gonna be diving in today , and it's
2:30
going to be procrastination . All right , we're
2:32
gonna be diving into a lot of things around
2:35
procrastination and how , if you are a person
2:37
that does Procrastinate , how you
2:39
can get over that hump . Okay , looking forward
2:41
to a great one today . Before we get started , let's fire
2:44
up the music .
2:47
Welcome to the Brian Wright audio experience
2:49
, a podcast dedicated to helping
2:51
entrepreneurs grow their business , make
2:54
more money and successfully navigate
2:56
through the chaos of life , all
2:58
while working , spending and stressing
3:00
less . And now your host . He's
3:03
a husband , a father of two , an
3:05
international business and life coach , and
3:07
a trusted motivational speaker For some
3:09
of the most respected companies in the world
3:12
, such as Invisalign and many others
3:14
.
3:14
Brian Wright , Everybody
3:17
welcome in procrastination . What we're gonna be diving
3:19
into today and we've all been there , we've all done
3:21
it , you know it's just one of those things . It's much easier
3:23
to coach you to not procrastinate , to not procrastinate
3:26
, and it is to do it yourself . But we've
3:28
all been there , we've all done that and I think
3:30
some of it with maybe some people it could be
3:32
laziness , but I am a big believer . The vast
3:34
majority of people laziness has nothing to do
3:36
with it . You know the longer and this
3:39
is another reason why you know having
3:41
coaches is so important is because a
3:43
lot of times the coach there is
3:45
not there to teach you things you don't already know . They're
3:48
reinforcing things that you do know and holding
3:50
you accountable to make sure that you're doing things on
3:52
a repetitive basis , having this discipline
3:54
that I so much talk about all over the world
3:56
. And this is a perfect example
3:58
from a procrastination standpoint and
4:01
we talked about last podcast the enemy of progress
4:03
is being indecisive . There has never been a
4:05
fast , successful , growing company with
4:07
an indecisive , slow
4:09
to make decisions . Leadership team
4:12
does not exist , but yet so many
4:14
of you out there in your small businesses are
4:16
so indecisive . You take
4:18
so long to make a decision , you try to
4:20
create all kinds of you know , let's study
4:22
this and study that , let's listen to 20 speakers
4:24
, blah , blah , blah and the next thing you know you haven't done anything
4:27
. And whenever you do go to finally make
4:29
a decision , you screw it up Anyway . This
4:31
is why the quicker and faster you make decisions
4:33
, the quicker you screw them up and the quicker
4:35
you can overcome the screw ups , perfect
4:37
it , and you've at perfecting it and on its
4:39
way before the next guy down the street has even
4:41
implemented it , because they're trying to be so perfect
4:43
. And when procrastination keeps
4:46
in , we've all had it . You know we have a task to do
4:48
and somehow we find a way
4:50
for other you know 20 other things to get
4:52
in our way from actually doing it
4:54
, and it's a real problem both . If
4:56
you're wanting to to improve , let's say
4:58
, you have a relationship problem and that
5:00
is affecting if this is the first time you've listened to me
5:02
, I am very passionate about you
5:05
know the , the triple threat I call them , and it's
5:08
it's life , career in business , and
5:10
none of those things exist on their
5:12
own . If you have issues
5:14
in your relationship in life , that is absolutely
5:17
going to affect you as an entrepreneur and your leadership
5:19
abilities and the things that you are going
5:21
to accomplish . Same way employees
5:23
out there . If you have a relationship problem
5:25
or financial problem , that is going
5:27
to affect your performance at work and
5:30
therefore affect your career , which therefore
5:32
affects the quality of your life . These
5:34
things are very intertwined and why
5:36
we teach all three and why
5:38
we're followed by not only business
5:40
owners . We're also followed by just people out there
5:42
that want to get more out of their life and career . And this
5:46
is also why this podcast is dedicated
5:48
to business owner entrepreneurs , their
5:50
employees and their family members
5:53
, because if you look at all three that I just said
5:55
, those fit into that life . I , career
5:57
and business parallel that we talk
5:59
so much about it , but this procrastination let's say
6:01
you are having a difficult
6:03
time in your relationship
6:05
at home boyfriend , girlfriend , husband , whatever
6:08
spouse , whatever it is and
6:10
you want to have a conversation with
6:12
them , you want to confront them about how
6:14
you are feeling and you are putting that
6:16
off . What inevitably happens
6:18
is it always is going to get harder
6:21
and harder and harder for you the
6:23
longer you wait , and
6:25
that is when the anxiety and , like
6:27
I said a million times in this podcast , the fear
6:29
creeps in the way and
6:32
the fear stands in the way
6:34
of the success you are having
6:36
. Your life , your career , your business
6:38
falls right in between the
6:40
goals you want to achieve , the
6:43
desires you want , and the
6:45
fears that are standing in your weaknesses , that are standing
6:47
in the way of making it happen . So
6:50
what can we do with procrastination ? If we are
6:52
having a conversation
6:55
, or we need to have a conversation with
6:57
our spouse about whatever it may be
6:59
, is that you cannot allow
7:01
things to stand in the way of you doing it , because it's
7:03
going to be harder and harder for you to have that conversation
7:06
. You must wake up tomorrow morning or
7:09
when you come home from work after you listen to this
7:11
podcast today . You must have that conversation
7:13
. The quicker you have it , the less
7:15
your anxiety will be , the less fear
7:18
you will have . You will overcome a weakness
7:20
of having a difficult conversation
7:22
, because for a lot of you , difficult conversations
7:24
are really hard . This is why leaders
7:27
inside organizations give really crappy
7:29
employee reviews . They don't hold people
7:31
accountable the way they should , the way great leaders
7:34
do , because they avoid the
7:36
difficult conversation . They procrastinate
7:38
, they put it off . 20 other things creep up
7:40
and the next thing you know these conversations
7:42
do not have or , excuse me , do not happen
7:45
. Now , obviously , what
7:47
I'm talking about is a minute
7:49
example of thousands
7:51
of things that we could talk about on
7:53
the show , right , and I'm talking about the relationship
7:56
issues , and relationship
7:58
issues are such a business entrepreneur
8:00
killer and they hurt people's careers
8:03
so much . So why do we
8:05
wait ? Why do we procrastinate ? And
8:08
a lot of that goes back to self-discipline
8:10
. What I talked about on the prior episode
8:13
on this podcast , and also what I led off
8:15
with today , is it goes back to having
8:17
the self-discipline to
8:20
make the decision to move
8:22
forward and have that tough conversation
8:24
. The self-discipline to move
8:26
forward , making the decision to
8:29
put your health and well-being at
8:31
the front of the line . The
8:33
discipline on making
8:35
sure that you have a
8:37
focus inside your organization
8:40
on things that you can control
8:42
, and not just inside your organization , also
8:44
employees out there listening , and you want to advance your
8:46
career again in your life
8:49
. You cannot control the type house you're
8:51
able to afford , but you sure as hell
8:53
can control the things that
8:55
will make you more money , to where you then
8:57
can go and buy a more expensive house
9:00
, a bigger house , better location , whenever it may
9:02
be . Again , all three
9:04
of them are intertwined and
9:06
if any of you are like me , it's
9:08
funny whenever you procrastinate and
9:10
you know you should be doing something and you put it off and
9:12
you put it off . I think we almost
9:15
psychologically trick ourselves into thinking
9:17
that somehow , magically , this task is just going
9:19
to go away , like by not doing it
9:21
. Somehow in three weeks I'm going to wake up
9:23
and it's going to do it itself . I think that
9:25
we all know that the task isn't going
9:27
to go away , but I think we all trick ourselves
9:30
into thinking that if we push it off , eventually
9:33
we just won't have to do it . I'll give you an example
9:35
. Early on with my
9:37
companies , there were times
9:40
I was just scared out of my mind to open up our
9:42
bank account and look at the cash
9:44
flow , because there wasn't any . I'm
9:47
sure all of you can relate out there , whether it be your personal
9:49
checking account or your business checking account , whatever
9:51
it might be . Is that one
9:53
of the ways I used to procrastinate all the time is
9:55
just getting my ass in there and looking and facing
9:57
the facts of oh crap , we're in trouble . What do
9:59
I do ? And
10:01
I also found out a lot of times that by procrastinating
10:04
because I was so scared to look at the cash balance
10:06
is that sometimes , once I finally did
10:08
get in there , was actually pleasantly surprised
10:10
and I spent all the you know , spent two weeks worrying
10:13
About something that I didn't even need
10:15
to worry about , because the cash flow was actually pretty
10:17
damn good . And we
10:19
all been the situation where , if we know the cash
10:21
is good in our account , we'd love to open up and look
10:23
at it , but if you know , we're making investments
10:26
in our brokerage account or IRA . If a lot
10:28
of you , if you're like me , I'm heavily invested
10:30
in crypto , as I do this podcast today
10:32
. The last last couple years have not been pretty
10:35
there , but when it was good man
10:37
, I love to open that thing up . But I know when it's
10:39
crashing and it's coming down , it's like , yeah , I don't
10:41
know , should I hit this ? Should I hit this app
10:43
? I use Coinbase , or should I hit this ? Open up this Coinbase
10:45
app ? I don't know . And while you're
10:48
doing that and you're procrastinating and you're being
10:50
indecisive on whether or not you should do it
10:52
, the anxiety and the fear and the
10:54
stomach pains and all this stuff just creep
10:56
up and up and up and
10:58
up . And again , it's not
11:00
that we don't know that we should be
11:02
doing these things . But it goes back
11:05
to this four stages of psychological focus
11:07
is , once we reach that indecision point and
11:10
it becomes the enemy of progress . This
11:12
is what we do as humans and it
11:14
absolutely kills the
11:16
forward progress in our lives , our careers
11:19
and entrepreneurs out there , your
11:21
businesses and
11:23
, I think , ironically enough , procrastination
11:25
. Oftentimes I think we can trick
11:28
ourselves into thinking it's our best friend
11:30
, right like I was saying earlier about hey , if I don't
11:32
do this , maybe we'll just go away . And
11:35
I think that's how we trick ourselves into thinking it's going to give
11:37
us some temporary relief and it may give us a
11:39
couple minutes of temporary relief . But and
11:41
you all know this , you've all been there regardless again
11:43
, whether it's a relationship problem , employees maybe you are , you
11:47
know you want to ask your boss for your leadership
11:49
team , for a raise or a
11:51
bonus or a promotion , whatever it may be , business
11:53
owners there's a thousand examples to Is
11:57
that . You know , by putting it off right now , can
11:59
it make us feel better and give us that instant gratification
12:02
of relief ? Yet can . But that instant relief
12:04
for that instant gratification , that instant feeling
12:06
of relief , it goes away very quickly and when it does , the anxiety that comes from that
12:08
doubles and it gets worse and worse and
12:10
this is so bad for our mental health , it's
12:12
so bad for our physical health and
12:18
as those things decline , our performance
12:21
declines our performance as
12:23
being a great husband , a great father at home
12:25
, our performance from career standpoint . Employees out there , whatever it may be the value
12:27
you offer the business , it declines . Business
12:29
owners your numbers decline , your leadership
12:31
skill sets , the culture you're
12:34
able to build , those decline and
12:40
as those are all declining , and heavily
12:42
, what's crazy is is those are the things that you actually can control Right
12:46
. So now , all of a sudden , you have numbers
12:49
that are starting to climb . Your relationship
12:51
gets worth , your health gets worse in your life . Employees
12:54
you move further and further away from the promotion . Business
12:58
owners you move further and further away from accomplishing
13:01
what you want is an entrepreneur for your business . That could
13:03
be more money , could be more freedom , could be a combination
13:05
of both , and
13:08
we all know this , yet
13:10
we still , once we reach that in decision point . And that four stages
13:12
of psychological
13:15
focus , remember go back and listen to the prior episode so
13:20
you can hear me dive into these four stages
13:22
more , because they are very , very powerful
13:24
and the success you will have
13:26
or will not have in your life , career , business , journey . So
13:31
, as we wrap up today , my challenge for
13:33
all of you is take something in
13:35
your life that you are procrastinating
13:38
over , and it can be anything . It can be in your life , it can be in your career , it could be
13:40
in your business , it could be all the above . Take
13:45
something and , right after you hear
13:47
this podcast , go and do it . Open up your bank
13:49
account , even though you're scared to look at the numbers in there . Employees , go ask for the raise
13:51
. Go have that difficult
13:54
conversation with your wife , spouse
13:56
, boyfriend , girlfriend , whatever it is . Start your workout
13:59
routine tomorrow . Put self health first . Start eating healthier . You
14:07
know , if you're addicted to Coca Cola or
14:09
something , throw it out when you get
14:11
home and then have the discipline
14:13
to say I'm never going to buy this again
14:15
Again . That is
14:17
backed with purposeful focus , discipline
14:21
to make the decision to throw
14:23
away that Coca-Cola and never buy it again
14:25
. You can control that
14:28
. So therefore
14:30
it fits into the description . Business
14:33
owners , if you want to terminate an employee , god forbid
14:35
. But you've been scared to have the conversation
14:37
, do it today . Business
14:39
owners , if your culture is
14:43
suffering and you know that you aren't getting any of your strategies
14:45
implemented . Seek help with a coach
14:48
today . Employees
14:50
, if you want to raise , go ask
14:52
your leadership team for that . Raise
14:55
today , and it
14:57
will always be easier to do it now
14:59
than wait to make a decision
15:01
and wait this out and let the anxiety
15:04
build , because you all know how it
15:06
feels . When that anxiety builds and
15:08
that fear creeps in and it gets worse and worse
15:10
, all of this stuff that I'm trying to teach you to
15:12
do just gets put on the back burner for all the
15:14
reasons we talked about today . Get
15:18
out there , be proactive
15:20
, be decisive
15:23
. Even if you end up failing
15:25
from making a quick decision , having
15:27
that tough conversation with the wife and maybe your
15:30
relationship gets worse first , it'll
15:33
always be better than
15:35
if you wait it out and let all these
15:37
anxieties and fears build , because it will affect you
15:39
in every way , mentally and physically . Go
15:42
grab something in your life that you're being indecisive
15:45
about , you're procrastinating
15:47
about . Knock it out today . All right , hope
15:49
everybody enjoyed part one . We're going to be on a journey
15:52
, probably for about a 10 part series
15:54
. It may not end up being a full 10 , but
15:56
we're going to try to get there all around
15:58
this psychology of focus hitting off
16:00
today around that indecision and procrastination
16:02
. Please refer the Brian Wright show to your
16:05
friends , family , anybody that wants to improve their
16:07
life , career and their business out there . We're
16:09
looking for those great organic referrals . Write
16:11
us a nice five star review about the podcast
16:13
, if you would . That would mean a lot and we'll
16:15
see you back here with another episode soon . Bye , bye
16:17
.
