You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show

0:02

on Fox Sports Radio. Welcome

0:05

to the program, already in progress, final

0:07

hour on this Monday, Dan and the Dan at

0:09

Stan Patrick Show. We somehow made it

0:11

to work, battling through a nor Easter.

0:14

Weather seems like it's nice in Tampa, but

0:17

we're not there as we normally are super

0:19

Bowl week. We're here at the Home office.

0:22

Coming up, we'll talk to Kyler Murray from the Arizona

0:24

Cardinals, and hopefully

0:26

this interview goes better than the

0:28

last time we sat down that was on the set

0:31

in Atlanta at the Super Bowl. Phone

0:34

calls are always welcome. Each seven seven three DP

0:41

love and update the poll results so far? Who

0:43

won the Rams Lions trade? Still

0:45

fifty nine percent say the Detroit Lions?

0:48

Okay, And I don't like saying who won

0:50

because I don't know what the Lions are going to do with

0:52

these picks. I don't know how Jared Goff's

0:55

going to play in Detroit. I like what

0:57

the Rams did with Matthew Stafford. They're all

0:59

in. They want to win the Super

1:01

Bowl. Odds the new ones for next year

1:03

already upgraded. Then they are the third

1:06

favorite to win the Super Bowl, behind the Chiefs

1:08

and the Green Bay Packers. I don't

1:10

think this sets the market for Deshaun Watson.

1:12

I don't think this resets the market for Deshaun

1:14

Watson. I think this is completely different

1:17

Deshaun Watson if he is traded.

1:19

This isn't a hey, a salary dump.

1:21

Where will you take our quarterback and his contract

1:24

with two more years guaranteed and

1:26

then we'll throw in some draft picks. That's

1:28

not the way it's going to be. I think the market for

1:30

Deshaun Watson's already been set. I

1:32

don't think Matthew Stafford being traded

1:35

had anything to do with this. I do know

1:37

that the forty nine ers we're all in to get

1:39

Matthew Stafford, but not to the degree that the

1:41

Rams were, And I don't

1:44

from what I'm told this morning, the Colts were

1:46

not as all in as the other teams

1:48

were. I think Carolina offering

1:50

the eighth pick overall, Washington Football

1:52

team offering up their first round pick, that's

1:55

what some of these teams their approach was different.

1:57

Now, if I'm the Rams, I'm

1:59

gonna get Jared Goff off my books, and

2:01

then I get an upgrade with Matthew Stafford. Carolina

2:04

was just saying, we'll give you the eighth pick overall. Come

2:07

on in, I don't think there was You

2:09

got to take Teddy Bridgewater and Washington's

2:11

football team. They had no draft capitol at

2:13

the quarterbacking position to give Detroit. And

2:15

Detroit and their new head coach, Dan

2:18

Campbell wanted to have a quarterback,

2:21

not just a developing quarterback. Now,

2:23

this is what I was told this morning. The

2:26

Lions have the seventh pick overall, and

2:28

I was told don't rule out them at

2:30

least exploring taking a quarterback

2:33

if a quarterback they like

2:35

falls in their lap, whatever that means.

The dunder Mifflin family has a new home.

The Office is streaming exclusively

2:42

on Peacock TV dot com and

2:45

you can stream now. Gary Klein covers

2:47

the Rams. He's the beat writer for the La Times.

2:49

Good to have Gary back. Gary,

2:51

your first reaction when you first

2:53

heard that Matthew Stafford was coming

2:56

and Jared Goff was going, Well,

2:59

Dan, I was a little surprised, only

3:01

because given the way that Less Neat and

3:03

Sean mcvayh have operated, I really

3:05

thought they were going to swing for the fences and go for

3:07

to Shaun Watson and really change

3:10

the paradigm of things. Uh. But

3:12

when when when it became Stafford,

3:15

that seems like, you know, a fit

3:17

for Sean McVay for what he's talked about

3:19

he wants to do with his offense. Um.

3:22

All the signs were there that they were going to move on

3:24

from Jared Goff, so that was no surprise,

3:26

but the fact that they did

3:29

it so quickly, Uh, they surprised

3:31

me. At what point do you

3:33

think, you know, maybe Jared Goff

3:35

and Sean McVay were going in different directions

3:38

and and that Sean decided that he

3:41

needed a new quarterback, you

3:43

know, Dan. The earliest indication for

3:45

us, you know, out here covering them every day

3:47

was after that Miami game.

3:50

There was some frustration, and uh, I

3:52

don't know if it was because Jared Goff wasn't

3:54

getting the ball out quick enough or because Brian

3:56

Flores was out coaching Sean McVeigh

3:59

in kind of a repeat of the Super Bowl. But

4:01

once we got later in the season to the San Francisco

4:04

forty nine ers loss where golf had

4:06

several turnovers, McVay

4:08

broke from practice. He is always

4:10

the guy falling on the sword for his players.

4:13

It's my fault. I didn't put him in the right But

4:16

after that game he said, our quarterbacks

4:18

got to take better care of the football. And

4:20

that is much of anything else signaled

4:22

that things were not going well.

4:25

And after the loss to the Jets, obviously

4:28

got to the end of the season with the broken thumb,

4:30

and when McVeigh essentially

4:32

benched Golf for

4:35

the playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks,

4:38

it was obvious there were some things that were

4:40

there were some issues that probably couldn't be

4:42

repaired. NFL dot COM's Michael

4:44

Silver published a column yesterday and

4:47

it was full of information about Golf's perspective.

4:49

In the story, Silver pointed out that Troy

4:52

Aikman routinely trashed Golf

4:54

when he and Joe Buck were assigned to call

4:56

Rams games. He gave a couple

4:59

of instances here where

5:01

you know Troy criticized him on an interception.

5:03

He also pregame of the Super Bowl

5:05

said, you know, Bill Belichick, once

5:08

the game in Jared Goff's hands, was

5:12

there any manipulation going on behind the scenes?

5:15

Do you think with Sean McVeagh

5:17

sort of getting a message out through another

5:19

channel. Well, I have to be

5:22

honest, and you've been in those kinds

5:24

of production meetings, so I think you probably

5:26

have more intimate knowledge of

5:28

what of what coaches are willing

5:30

to disclose. So I can't

5:32

say that I ever got a hint that,

5:35

you know, Sean McVeigh was trying to undermine

5:38

his quarterback. I think, at

5:40

least publicly and what we see every

5:43

day, as you know, the people that cover them on a

5:45

beat, Uh, there weren't. There weren't

5:47

hints of that. There was nothing outward

5:49

Like Jared Goff isn't a hard worker. He doesn't

5:52

he's not putting in the time. That's why

5:54

I think that statement from McVeigh

5:56

after the San Francisco loss,

5:58

to come out publicly and say that was

6:01

so compelling for people who

6:03

watch them every day. Are the Rams closer

6:05

to a super Bowl today

6:07

than they were last

6:09

Friday? Well, I

6:11

think Matt Stafford, obviously,

6:14

with his resume in terms of his

6:16

arms, his arm strength and his stats,

6:19

I think there's some excitement that perhaps he could

6:21

put them over the hump. But you know, Dan, they

6:23

have a lot more issues than quarterback they've

6:26

got, they've have don't have a deep threat receiver.

6:29

Their running game looks like it can be coming

6:31

on with cam Akers, but that's that's no

6:33

guarantee. And frankly, the

6:36

rams success this season

6:38

was built on their defense, and that defense

6:41

with Brandon Staley becoming the coach of the

6:43

Chargers, several assistants leaving,

6:45

they're gonna They're probably gonna lose some key free

6:48

agents. Um, there's no guarantee

6:50

that Raheem Morris is going to be able to come in

6:52

and maintain that defense at the level

6:54

it was at. So I think the Rams have a lot of

6:56

issues. This creates excitement

6:59

for them. They're hosting the Super Bowl, you know,

7:01

next season, so it sets them up for a

7:03

possible run there. But really, I think

7:05

the bar now for Matt stafford Is and

7:07

Sean McVeigh really is, you've got to

7:09

win the Super Bowl because Jared Goff

7:12

got you there and you couldn't do it. Now you've

7:14

dumped his contract, You've given

7:16

away more first round draft picks, and

7:19

you really you gotta win the whole thing. Gary,

7:21

good to visit with you, and I'm glad

7:23

you got something to write about here for the next couple

7:26

of days. Thank you, buddy. All right, that's

7:28

Gary Klein. He covers the rams for the La

7:30

Times. Yeah, you start to think about it.

7:33

You know, these legacies are built on

7:36

one winning, but that margin is

7:38

so small with winning and losing.

7:40

And Brady has been fortunate where

7:42

he's got some some wins that are

7:44

really really close. You know Vinetarry

7:47

kicking game winning field goals. You

7:49

know the Tuck game with the Raiders and they

7:51

got the favorable ruling and then Vinetarry kicks

7:53

of field goal. There you go back to

7:56

Jimmy Garoppolo is one completion away

7:58

from winning the Super Bowl, right,

8:02

one completion away and he's going to

8:04

win the Super Bowl. And then you have Jared

8:06

Goff. If Brandon Cooks holds

8:08

on to the ball in the end zone, do

8:11

we have a different scenario

8:13

here? Can you move on from a

8:15

quarterback who won the Super Bowl for you?

8:18

Now you might look at Jared Goff and say the numbers

8:20

aren't you know, we

8:22

need something that's more impressive, like some of these

8:25

other quarterbacks out there, or Jimmy Garoppolo

8:27

with the same way. But if they had won Super

8:29

bowls, would those teams have

8:31

moved on or be willing to talk about

8:33

moving on, and they probably wouldn't

8:36

be because we would

8:38

look at Jimmy Garoppolo differently if he

8:40

had a Super Bowl and if Jared Goff

8:42

had beaten Bill Belichick, Tom Brady

8:45

and the Patriots, Yeah, mclub, what

8:47

if Carson Wentz hadn't gotten hurt him won the MVP.

8:50

I'm not saying you would have won the super Bowl, but yeah,

8:52

it was trajectory. Yeah

8:55

yeah, And that Patriots ramp Super Bowl a couple

8:57

of years ago. They held Brady to two hundred and sixty

8:59

two yards zero touchdowns in a pick

9:02

they had them. I mean, if they scored

9:04

two touchdowns, they win. Well. I think

9:06

Sean McVay has admitted that he got out coached,

9:09

where you know, you think you're

9:11

preparing for Belichick, you're

9:13

ready for Belichick, but you're not truly

9:16

ready for Belichick, and you

9:18

can sometimes over coach and overthink

9:20

things. And I think Sean has been

9:22

transparent about that. But would

9:25

we have a different feeling about Jared

9:27

Goff winning a Super Bowl and we

9:29

probably would like Nick Foles

9:31

winning a Super Bowl. We have a different

9:33

thought on him. I think he's the same quarterback.

9:36

I don't think he's a franchise quarterback. I don't

9:38

think he's just starting quarterback. But

9:41

when what he did, how he did it, when

9:43

he did it, he'll always have that. We'll

9:45

look at him differently. Fifteen

9:48

years down the road, we might be looking at Nick

9:50

Foles differently than we do Jared

9:53

Goff or Carson Wentz or Jimmy Garoppolo,

9:56

and they might have a longer career and

9:58

maybe a little bit more success career. But he won

10:00

a super Bowl. He beat Belichick

10:03

and Brady in one of the great

10:05

postseason runs or performances

10:07

super Bowl history. But it's

10:10

weird how you get that coronation

10:12

and we go at super Bowl winning

10:14

quarterback. There's just something about it that,

10:16

unless you're Trent Dilfer, we attach

10:19

even more value. Joe Flacco became

10:21

a better, more respected quarterback

10:24

because he won a super Bowl, Because

10:27

if he didn't, it would have been, oh, he was the quarterback

10:29

on that team that had a great defense, Eli

10:33

Manning winning those super bowls. If he doesn't

10:35

win them, then we look at

10:37

him differently. He won two games,

10:40

two big games. He beat Brady and Belichick

10:43

in the Patriots. Because of

10:45

that we look at him differently than we do Philip Rivers.

10:47

Philip Rivers is a better quarterback in my opinion.

10:50

But Eli won the games

10:52

that you need to win. And

10:55

if Jared Goff Jimmy Garoppolo

10:57

had won super Bowls, we would look

10:59

at them differently. We might even look

11:01

at Patrick Mahomes differently if he did

11:03

not win that Super Bowl. He did

11:05

not play well third and fifteen

11:08

and the Niners lost track of

11:11

Tyreek Hill. That's

11:13

the difference. Bosa

11:16

almost sacks him. You

11:19

complete that and then you go down the

11:22

other end, Garoppolo, they don't get

11:23

a first down and Chiefs

11:27

win. Yeah. MC club. On the opposite

11:29

side, is Matthew Stafford just a big

11:31

stats guy, like he hasn't one at all. Well, we're

11:33

gonna find out, do you do you have

11:35

a hunch one way or the other. I

11:38

don't know how he is when like

11:40

it always feels like when you go, boy, he's had all

11:42

of these comebacks. Well, the

11:44

team hasn't been good. He was always behind,

11:48

and it feels like you can pile

11:50

up numbers that way the defense is

11:52

allowing you to. I want to see what it's like for him

11:54

to manage a game. Not

11:56

that he can't, but now you manage

11:59

a game and you don't

12:01

have to go, we're down three scores, let's just

12:03

put it up. Now, it might be run

12:06

the football, be a little more

12:08

conservative at times, being

12:10

able to build up a lead as opposed to

12:12

trying to come back from you know, the other team's

12:14

lead. So is he

12:17

capable, sure, I mean he's

12:19

extremely talented, But

12:21

sometimes when you've played, like Matthew

12:23

Stafford was always a highlight like

12:26

you, really the only time we watch the Lions

12:28

was Thanksgiving and even then you're not paying

12:30

full attention to him. Be a noon

12:33

start and you go, oh, the Lions are run, Yeah,

12:36

a big deal. And then you'd see

12:38

a highlight maybe from the Lions on the highlight

12:40

shows that night, and that'd be it, because you don't

12:43

settle in and go, I'm gonna sit and watch

12:45

the Lions play. Yeah, Paul, there's

12:47

certain stats you don't want to be tagged with, Like Philip

12:50

Rivers, I think we'll have the most yards

12:52

for our quarterback who's never appeared in the Super

12:54

Bowl. Matthew Stafford is going

12:56

to be that guy. Yeah,

12:58

he had sixty thousand yards and didn't

13:00

win a playoff game. That you don't want that? No, that's a

13:02

biggie. Well the

13:04

fact that Matthew sixteen quarterbacks,

13:07

what does that stat have thrown for

13:10

forty five thousand yards

13:13

regular season, but Matthew Staffords

13:15

the only one who's never won a playoff game. Yeah,

13:17

you don't want that. Phill

13:20

in Indiana, Hey Phil, what's on your mind today?

13:23

Hey? Dan? It's always a pleasure to be with you. My

13:27

worst of the weekend, Dan, and I wanted to get your

13:29

thoughts on it is. It seems to be a trend

13:31

here of over the last few months.

13:33

It's even growing in all sports

13:35

where players just get disgruntled and say

13:38

yeah, I'm good, I want out after they've

13:40

signed the long term contracts. And

13:43

when did it become, Dan, this

13:45

kind of growth where players have

13:47

this much power to where they

13:50

have say in personnel, they tell

13:53

management when they want out. I just I wanted to

13:55

get your thoughts on that, Dan, because it's it's a

13:57

bad trend. I think, all right, thank you, Phil.

13:59

Yeah. See, well, Jared Goff just sudd an extension

14:02

and he got shipped right out of town. Does that

14:04

mean it's not really just the

14:06

players that all of a sudden have all this power, they might

14:08

be using it a little bit more. But we've

14:11

seen this with the NBA. Kareem

14:14

abdul Jabbar when he was lou El Sindor wanted

14:16

out of Milwaukee. Charles Barkley

14:19

wanted to be traded, he wanted to try to win a championship

14:22

in Houston. We've seen this before

14:24

where guys Will Kobe was

14:26

pressuring the Lakers to get out and maybe go

14:28

to Chicago. It's if what are

14:30

you willing to risk? Because that's

14:32

what it comes down to. Like Deshaun Watson,

14:35

what are you willing to risk? You're

14:37

going to sit out the season and

14:40

if he is, then he's going to have

14:42

the leverage there. But he's got a no trade

14:44

clause. And how many teams

14:46

are going to be able to afford what it's going to take

14:48

to get to Shaun Watson Probably

14:51

a handful. I think they're teams like

14:53

the Rams, the forty nine Ers, the

14:55

Jets. They'll be teams that go, let's

14:58

just see what it's going to cost because

15:00

you don't want to go. You know, gosh,

15:02

did you see what they got him for? We

15:04

should have offered whatever. And

15:07

I think that's what happened? The Rams toyed

15:09

with the idea, The Niners are toying

15:11

with the idea with DeShawn Watson. I'm

15:16

sure the Colds are. I'm

15:18

sure the Jets are, the

15:20

Bears are, Yeah, I'm McLevin. How

15:22

can a team that doesn't have a top ten pick

15:25

even get in the conversation like the culture twenty

15:28

one now or something, and they're going to be good for

15:30

years to come? What can they give up to get watch? Well,

15:33

you mean Watson? To get Watson? Yeah, like they don't

15:36

have anything to give up. Well, I think,

15:38

whether this is true or not, that

15:40

you've got to give up two number ones and

15:43

you have to give up two young

15:47

starters. Now I don't know if that's

15:49

on offense or defense, but I think you

15:51

have to give up two number ones for Deshaun Watson

15:53

and probably two players who were going

15:56

to come in and start right away, not draft picks.

15:58

So when people say you're gonna be it's

16:00

four first round draft picks from what I was told,

16:03

two first round draft picks and then you

16:05

probably have to give up a couple of starters

16:07

there, Like they maybe they

16:09

don't have confidence in drafting, but

16:12

maybe they want something that they know

16:14

that's tangible. We can put that push person

16:16

in those people in at certain positions,

16:19

and maybe that's what it takes to get

16:22

Deshaun Watson. Yeapo, Watson's in a tough position

16:24

because the teams he's on now does not have

16:26

a ton of talent. They ship them out, they don't have draft

16:28

picks. The team that acquires him will be

16:30

in the same boat. They'll have to give up talent and give

16:32

up draft picks. You would think, well,

16:35

how much are you giving up now? Because if

16:37

a team is getting Deshaun Watson, are you getting

16:40

him to win now? Or do you realize

16:42

that it might take two years

16:44

something like that, Because the Jets aren't ready

16:46

to win now. The Bears

16:49

could be. I mean their playoff

16:52

ish team San Francisco is

16:54

certainly ready. The Rams

16:56

were certainly ready, and there will be a mystery

16:58

team in here. Carolina. I know

17:01

Carolina was interested in Stafford, they'll

17:03

be interested in Deshaun Watson. I feel

17:05

bad for my guy, Teddy Bridgewater. He's

17:10

uh, he's probably gonna pay the

17:12

price in Carolina. Now. He got paid, but you're

17:14

gonna pay the price. And he's got one

17:16

more one more year and he's

17:18

at least healthy. But Carolina

17:21

probably gonna bring in a quarterback, Yeah, Polly.

17:25

At least Bridgewater got that contract after the injury.

17:27

Yeah yeah, I think he's got twenty million coming no matter what

17:29

next year. He had, he

17:32

had it written all over his name, he was the Bridge

17:34

quarterback. I mean, you know he should have seen it

17:36

coming. Eddy Bridgewater,

17:38

You're in the Bridge quarterback? Yeah,

17:41

all right, let me take a break. More phone

17:44

calls coming up and Kyler

17:46

Murray. Kyler Murray is sent to join us.

17:52

I'm a good sport about it. I said, I

17:55

would be open minded to having him

17:57

on. Do you think that he forgets

17:59

what happened two years ago in Atlanta at the

18:01

Super Bowl? Am I going to have to

18:03

remind it was a big deal to us? Maybe

18:06

it wasn't a big deal to Kyler, but

18:09

I'm a fan of his. It was

18:11

just one of those where we sat down and I had

18:13

to tell him. I said, you know, we're

18:15

live on TV and radio, and

18:18

I had a studio audience there. The studio

18:20

audience is, you know, it's almost like the late

18:23

comedian Andy Kaufman, Like it would have been

18:25

a skit where hey, let's just go

18:27

out and we're gonna have fun and I'm not

18:29

gonna say anything. And then that's where I

18:31

like, you know, we're live. Yes,

18:34

Ton, I think he not only does he remember, but

18:36

he wants to make it up to you. And I

18:38

think that's how that's gonna go. Okay, would be a

18:40

very nice interivience. All right, Well, thank you, ton

18:44

a very optimistic. Well this

18:46

will keep you in your car. Coming up a very

18:48

nice interview with Kyler Murray right

18:50

after this, and the Dan Patrick Shaw Rocket

20:13

Bowl odds have been updated after the Rams

20:15

deal with the Lions, kans City

20:17

Chiefs of the favorites next year, followed by

20:19

the Packers, then the Rams, Buccaneers,

20:22

Ravens, Buffalo bill San Francisco forty

20:24

nine Ers, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks,

20:26

and Cleveland Browns. I think another reason

20:28

why the Rams went all in is you factor

20:30

in Brady's forty three, Aaron Rodgers thirty

20:33

seven, and we don't know if Drew Brees

20:35

is going to be playing in New Orleans again. Rams

20:37

are all in trying to win a Super

20:39

Bowl. He plays in the same division with

20:42

the Rams. He's the Cardinals quarterback,

20:44

the Heisman Trophy winner. Kyler Murray

20:46

on the program, Kyler, how are you today?

20:49

I'm doing good? How are you? I'm doing spectacular.

20:52

We're off to a good start here. So it was

20:55

it was two years ago today, let's

20:58

knock this out when you came on the

21:00

set and you hadn't

21:02

decided baseball or football,

21:05

at least publicly. So what

21:07

happened in that moment where

21:10

we couldn't communicate with each other? I

21:14

mean, you

21:16

just kept asking me the question I was you know,

21:19

Um, I wasn't prepared to give

21:21

an answer, didn't. I don't know if I even had an answer at

21:23

that time, But no, it

21:26

was fun in my eyes, you

21:28

know, it

21:30

wasn't fun in my eyes. Just yeah, Well,

21:33

I wanted to help you. I was

21:35

trying to help you because I knew what the

21:37

reaction was going to be and

21:40

I just didn't want it

21:42

to come back where you know, schools

21:44

were or teams were gonna go. Well,

21:46

did you see what happened on the Dan Patrick Show

21:49

or I you know, I

21:51

thought there was gonna be negative feedback for you. No,

21:53

I think I think there

21:55

was that. You know, actually,

21:58

I think I want to say the Cardinals asked about

22:01

about the interview.

22:04

Um, we had teams that asked

22:06

for a copy of that Kyler. Oh

22:09

really yeah, they wanted to know what happened.

22:11

Like they like, they didn't know how you were

22:13

under pressure. They didn't know if

22:16

you were like but

22:18

but you know how the teams overreact

22:20

when it comes to yeah, Yeah, I

22:22

think I think the whole world did. Like I

22:25

mean, if if you're if you don't know what

22:27

you're what sport you're about to play, and

22:29

somebody keeps asking you on live you know, Live

22:31

Radio Left, did you know at that time

22:34

what you were going to do? Because I

22:37

was told what you were going to do? Oh,

22:41

I was told. I was told if you got a

22:43

top ten grade that

22:46

you were gonna be you were gonna go football. And

22:48

you got that top ten grade, that

22:50

you knew you were going to be a top ten pick. Honestly,

22:54

Dan, I don't even I don't even I

22:56

don't think I even knew my grade. I

23:00

don't I don't remember getting the grade but what

23:02

was the point or that day where you go, this

23:05

is what I'm going to do, and what

23:07

was it that brought you to that point? And

23:10

it was that that was the hardest decision I've ever

23:12

had to make. U It

23:14

honestly took me a long

23:17

time to figure out what I was going to do, just

23:19

because making that. You know, I

23:21

remember getting the phone

23:24

call. You know, actually my boys had

23:26

told me when I got drafted. We were we

23:28

were leaving a regional at ou

23:31

We had just lost to Florida State, and

23:33

I got the you know, I got the news that I got drafted

23:35

by the A's and I had told him

23:37

before I got on the plane. You know, if they you know, if they draft

23:40

me, like I'm coming, you know, I'm going to play.

23:42

So just give them that commitment,

23:45

you know, give them a word that I was gonna come play if you know,

23:47

they let me play another season football and

23:50

then coming back and having you

23:52

know, this decision, it was just it was hard for me

23:55

to uh kind of tell them I'm

23:57

not coming to play for him after I already you know,

23:59

told him that I was going through. No I respect

24:01

that that you wanted to be a man of your word, I

24:04

also found it interesting. I was, I love these draft

24:06

profiles, and there was a draft profile

24:08

of you that talked about lack of arm

24:10

strength, and I went, when

24:13

you threw the ball with us in Atlanta,

24:16

I said, look, whoever

24:18

is writing this has not seen that up close and

24:20

personal, because that ball was whizzing you

24:23

had. You had a great arm. But I

24:25

think they you know, they went and by the way, I

24:27

told teams that that you had a great arm. I could

24:30

hear the ball whizzing by. But

24:32

I said, he's playing baseball. He's got a good arm.

24:35

Like you know, we create these

24:38

obstacles or you're not tall enough,

24:40

and you know, all of these different things. But I

24:42

went, don't don't question his arm strength. You

24:44

can question his hype, not his arm strength.

24:47

I'm glad you were helping me out behind the scenes.

24:49

Yeah, that's at least I can do. There. We did

24:52

it, though, we we did it.

24:54

Look at us. What was your welcome

24:57

to the NFL moment? Good or bad? Um?

25:02

I think it was Week one. Um. I

25:05

don't know. If you watch the game, we played the lines like

25:07

that was the worst like half of football

25:10

that I've ever been a part of. It was it

25:12

felt like a joke. And in my head, like in

25:16

my head, I'm thinking like, damn, I know these people are

25:18

watching this like thinking like that he should just

25:20

play baseball. It was that

25:22

bad. Like it was. It

25:25

was horrible, man. And then we came out the second

25:27

half and we ended up time

25:30

the game going over time should have won the game.

25:32

But that was probably my welcome

25:34

to the NFL moment. Now do you check social

25:37

media at halftime after after

25:40

that first half against the lines? Uh?

25:44

No, okay, Well Steph Curry

25:46

checks his uh social media

25:49

at halftime. I think

25:51

it's a natural, Like you know, I'm

25:53

on if you go, if you get on your phone, you have

25:55

a tendency to just click on the apps. But um

25:58

nah, not a nut check

26:00

social media after that. So

26:03

baseball is still a possibility. I'm guessing for

26:05

you it did as

26:08

far as my ability goes. Yeah, I don't

26:10

know how to you know, contract

26:12

works and stuff like that, but

26:14

um yeah, what if the A's

26:17

traded your rights to the Diamondbacks,

26:20

I'll be all I'll be all four. I mean i'd be all four

26:22

it either way. I mean, I have you

26:24

know, I love the you know, the A's organization was great

26:27

to me, So you

26:29

know, I would love to play both. Did

26:31

you ever talk to Dion Sanders about playing

26:34

both? We actually did

26:36

an interview last

26:38

I think it was last last year, but um,

26:42

yeah, he actually advised me to go play baseball.

26:44

But uh, you know

26:47

that that wasn't where my heart was. So yeah,

26:49

And that's kind of be interesting that you feel like

26:51

you might be more successful or people

26:53

think he might be more successful in baseball,

26:56

but it came back to them doubting you and go, well,

26:59

what we saw that one year at Oklahoma? Is that real?

27:01

And does that translate into the NFL?

27:04

And like, how do

27:06

you how do you answer those people

27:08

when you were too small? Can

27:10

you hold up uh whatever

27:13

it might be? Can you see over your linemen? Yeah,

27:16

well a lot of those questions are like like

27:18

that. The seover linement question is

27:21

I don't like I said anyway, no, no

27:23

quarterback my high Drew Brees like Michael

27:25

Russell, they can't. Nobody can see over over

27:28

guys that are six to five. But um,

27:31

to the people that you know say yeah, you should

27:33

have gonna play baseball baseball, I don't think they understand

27:35

how difficult to

27:37

gae baseball is. Like especially

27:40

to play at that level, you know, when you got to go

27:42

through minor leagues and stuff like that. It's

27:44

a grind. It's you know, it's at taxing

27:47

on the body, play every day. So

27:49

it's it's not easy. You know, it's a lot on the mental. But

27:52

you know, for me, I think that I just you know, I trust

27:54

my ability. Um and you

27:56

know football has always kind of been my uh my

28:00

love. Well, yeah, since high

28:02

school. You've been very successful at

28:04

it. The Heisman campaign

28:06

when you're in the car with Tebo, Now,

28:08

I don't are you guys in the car at

28:11

the same time when you're shooting that commercial, No,

28:14

do the you know, COVID and stuff like that. I

28:16

had to be in the carbon myself. Okay,

28:19

you fooled us because it was very good. Now, there's

28:21

one moment where Tebow is ready

28:23

to ask you something and you said, don't

28:26

ask that. Is that baseball?

28:31

Was the question about baseband? No? No, it wasn't.

28:35

Well that's what I thought that he's ready to ask

28:37

you all the questions, and you're like you could read his

28:39

mind. You're like, don't don't ask that question. I thought

28:41

that it was Oh okay, So I thought

28:43

that that might have been part of the uh the script

28:46

there. Uh so I see

28:48

that you have your Snickers hardware

28:50

on there is

28:53

that is that one of a kind or uh?

28:58

I believe so I feel specially to

29:00

be able to you know, wear this and be the

29:03

uh the season's Hungers player

29:05

of the Year. It's like I said, it's an honor.

29:07

There's a lot of great, great players this year

29:10

that had you know, great weeks of football. Um.

29:13

I was surprised that I got to bring this with home, but

29:15

no, it's it's uh, it's a good deal.

29:17

I get to donate it off to the first responders

29:20

in Arizona. So I'm

29:22

glad to run my neck. You couldn't wear

29:24

that during the game. No, it

29:26

would weigh me down. What's

29:31

your plans for the off season? Uh?

29:35

Man? I got hurt the

29:37

last, uh you know, last game of the season,

29:39

So get getting my ankle right and

29:41

then you know, hit the ground running

29:44

like I always do, just working out trying

29:46

to get better. Surgery. Oh

29:49

no, no, surgery. Have you had surgery?

29:53

I actually I had a sports herning like when

29:55

I was like a little kid. I don't

29:57

I think it was like seven or eight. Other than

30:00

that, though, that's something else we have in

30:02

common. I had a sports herney as well. I

30:05

was young though I was using the restaurom. I came out of the restaurant,

30:07

I was like, yo, I started my thing. I

30:09

was like, yo, my dad, what is this? And

30:12

he started pushing on it. I was like, wait,

30:15

wait, that's a bathroom hernee and not a sports

30:18

herney. You didn't hurt yourself doing anything

30:20

athletic. You gotta

30:22

come up with a story than I

30:24

guess you can call it that. Uh put

30:27

me in the huddle when you throw the ball to DeAndre Hopkins.

30:30

So what's that play call? Um?

30:35

We called it. We called it cowboy pass.

30:38

But it didn't end up working how we practice

30:40

it? You know, Um,

30:43

it was designed for me. I don't know if you remember the

30:46

Aaron Rodgers play where they

30:48

were playing the Cowboys and yeah, you know he dropped back,

30:50

rose out left, hits

30:53

a tight end on the side. You know that

30:55

that was the original draw of the play.

30:57

Now how it worked. D hob just ran the end zone.

31:00

I don't even think my guy Andy was supposed

31:02

to be running across the field. I think you got caught

31:04

up. D hoppened up being

31:06

the only guy in the end zone, and you know,

31:08

the the rollout left didn't really

31:10

work because the dude contained, so you know very

31:12

well had to you know, avoid him

31:14

and make him miss and then just try

31:16

to get it to you know, get it to where he could

31:19

have a chance to catch it too. I thought the most

31:21

underrated part of that is you rolled left

31:24

and we're able to get that much on the football

31:26

to throw it to the end zone because that's

31:29

going against your body. Is that's not easy

31:31

to do. No, it's uh,

31:33

it's one of those things. Remember you kind of just heave

31:36

it down there and uh hope for the

31:38

best. And I don't like when they

31:40

call it the catch because you know it's

31:42

the throw is too pretty good. I mean, I think

31:44

we always, you know, Dwight Clark catches from

31:47

Joe Montana's called the catch. You know it's

31:49

you know, DeAndre. How did you see that catch by DeAndre?

31:51

Nobody said you see the throw by Kyler Murray.

31:55

I just think, you know, everybody,

31:59

I think just because it kind of just because

32:01

it's me, there's there's that like stigma

32:03

around him. But um

32:05

no, I mean, like like I said, I mean, DeAndre,

32:08

he made a great catch. I don't think, you know, there's both

32:10

sides of If there's not the throw, there's not the catch

32:12

and there's not you know, it goes both plays. Nobody

32:14

talks about Eli Mannings throw in the Super Bowl

32:17

to David Tyree and they just talk about David Tyree's

32:19

catch. So just saying you

32:21

shouldn't touch it if you didn't throw. Yeah, there you

32:23

go. I got your back here, all right.

32:25

Hey, we've moved on. We're back. You

32:28

and I the same page right now. Yeah,

32:31

next time I see you, whoa,

32:35

whoa. Well, I'm gonna bring the snickers

32:38

and uh, hey, congrats.

32:40

I've been a big fan of yours, even

32:42

after what happened two years ago. You're still

32:45

a great player and I'm happy for your

32:47

success there. So thanks for being a good

32:49

sport. And tell your dad

32:51

I said, Aloe, I will I

32:53

will thank you. Thank you. Kyler. That's Kyler

32:55

Murray joining us on behalf of Snickers the Hungriest

32:58

Player of the Year for the twenty twenty

33:00

NFL season. Yes, Polly, we are back.

33:02

We are we are on the

33:04

same page now. Yes, your pal,

33:06

he's going to give you a hug next time. He says you this

33:08

is good. This is a good thing. I would

33:11

like the Snicker's chain. I think I

33:13

don't need a hug, you

33:15

know, take snickers there. All

33:18

right, we moved on. He had that sense of humor bout

33:20

it good. Yeah, see, yeah,

33:22

I like it. He's got it. He's pretty goofy, you know. Yeah,

33:26

yeah, I think he's got that. And I just

33:28

didn't know that

33:30

he was that confused about what he

33:32

was going to do and couldn't

33:35

say something that couch that just to

33:37

say, look, I'm thinking of both

33:40

or you know, I haven't made up my mind, and I

33:42

truly haven't. I'm twenty one years of

33:44

age, and you know, we're trying to figure this out. But

33:47

hey, once I know, then I'll let everybody else know.

33:49

Yes, boy, I hate to bring this up to

33:53

the Diamondbacks broach him about

33:55

playing some baseball? Or does the quarterback

33:57

position prevent Kyler

34:00

Murray from dipping his toe into baseball? Because

34:03

if he's a defensive back like Brian Jordan, you

34:05

know, he's the quarterback. You've always said the quarterback

34:07

can't play too. Yeah, we can't. No, I

34:10

think that after he gets a couple of years

34:12

under his belt, then

34:14

maybe you're able to go to spring training

34:18

like Russell Wilson did, and if the

34:20

Diamondbacks there, you could go to spring

34:22

training with them, maybe work out a little bit,

34:24

have a little bit of fun, give the Diamondbacks

34:26

a little bit of publicity.

34:29

But whenever the quarterback

34:31

does something like this in the off season,

34:34

then then we wonder about what

34:36

your commitment is, whether it's too or not. Remember

34:39

when Tony Romo went to Mexico with

34:41

Jessica Simpson and they were on a bye

34:43

week, and then all of a

34:45

sudden, you go, oh, well, let's see. You know, his

34:48

mind's not on football, And

34:51

but that's Shack. Every offseason,

34:54

Shack would be doing an album or a movie,

34:57

and then people was usually be working on your free throws.

35:01

Okay,

35:03

he might have been, but

35:06

I don't know how long you can work on you Yeah,

35:08

it's one of those I hit golf shots golf balls

35:10

all the time. It doesn't mean I'm getting better just

35:12

because I'm hitting golf shots

35:14

all the time. Sometimes you have to

35:16

know what you're doing when you do

35:19

it. Like like if Shaq

35:21

continues to shoot free throws the way he shoots

35:23

free throws, he's not going to get any better. He

35:25

needed to change his routine, his form.

35:28

All right, let's

35:31

take a break, last call for phone

35:33

calls. What we learned, what's in store tomorrow?

35:35

And Todd, great job with delivering

35:38

the message to Kyler and sort

35:40

of being the Henry Kissinger the liaison.

35:43

I'm very happy. I'm thrilled that you guys are Budge again.

35:45

We are back, We are back, all

35:47

right back after this. Thanks for listening to

36:03

Kyler Murray, who just joined us, my

36:05

new best friend. He became the second

36:07

player all time with twenty five or

36:09

more touchdown passes, ten or more rushing touchdowns

36:12

and his season, joining Cam Newton

36:14

who did that twenty fifteen. During his

36:17

MVP season, Murray

36:19

had nine games with a touchdown

36:21

pass any rushing touchdown. That's

36:23

the most such games by any

36:25

player in one season all time.

36:28

Alrighty, we had this daye sports history

36:30

and a couple of phone calls Jeff and Detroit.

36:33

Hey, Jeff, how are you today? What

36:36

up? Knowing? One time for chat row look at

36:38

showing Kyler awesome particle on the

36:40

show that was pretty

36:42

cool. Man, What isn't? What

36:45

does? What does? Northeastern burning coming

36:47

down on us? Man? You know, I'm thinking to

36:49

myself, I'd be safe and warm if I was in La

36:52

California dreaming on such a winner's

36:54

day. Listena hooked us

36:56

up. Man, Seriously, you

36:59

know, you think you out and they pull you right back

37:01

in. Both teams got exactly what they needed,

37:04

you know, And I promise I was listen.

37:06

I'm I got Seahawk getting

37:08

all kinds of stuff. But I'm thinking, well, baby,

37:10

they might be able to throw it this time, and you talk

37:13

yourself right back into it. So as

37:15

that being said, we'll talk a little bit more about

37:17

the trail later on. With that being said, I have a

37:19

proposal for you, gentlemen. I

37:22

say that the Lions will

37:24

be second in the NFC North,

37:27

right behind Green Bay, and will make

37:29

it to the playoffs and

37:32

the cart and and Dad's first

37:34

year. I have faith and I'm

37:36

stepping out like this because I'm high off

37:38

for coffee right now. I'm going real strong and

37:40

Dan the punishment will be a

37:42

shower of shame chili dog

37:45

style onions in everything. Baby,

37:47

let's do it. Wow, Okay,

37:50

I'm gonna let you ride this emotional high

37:52

there, Jeff. Hey, listen,

37:54

I know I'm gonna be calling you benching about it probably

37:56

about three games and like, why

37:59

did I

38:02

also listen? You know I'm a snackologist.

38:05

You guys were talking about milking cheese

38:07

and how to do it as a shower of sime. What you

38:09

have to do is break down the consistency. We'll put

38:11

up a couple of eggs in a little bit of milk. It actually

38:14

cooler cheese down and make supportable. Thank

38:16

you, Jeff, Thank you Jeff. Interesting

38:19

that he knows that. Yeah. See, I feel like

38:21

I'd rather have Jeff send us some chili dogs

38:23

rather than shower of shame. Those chili dogs. That

38:25

sounds good right now. Rob

38:28

and Key West Florida seem

38:31

just kind of lost it there for chili

38:33

dogs, and I was like, man, that sounds so good. Dog

38:37

it does snow beers and chili dogs. Let's

38:39

go. Yeah, hey, Rob, Hey

38:42

guys, how you guys are doing

38:45

today? We're sick chack? Yeah,

38:48

hey, Jeff is my favorite caller. It's

38:51

wonderful hear him talk. But if

38:53

he's got to stay on hold as long as I do, props

38:57

to Jeff because that's awesome. If

38:59

he does that three times a week. Yeah. Yeah,

39:01

I get caught up in different things, or

39:03

we have guests on or whatever, and then I

39:05

always forget to then, you know, I

39:08

remind myself that I have to get to callers. So thank

39:10

you for holding Ron. Well, I have the

39:12

best and worst fighter. Would

39:14

you like the best or the worst? First? Dan

39:17

best? The best? It

39:19

got up to seventy seven yesterday, okay,

39:24

the worst all the way down to sixty

39:27

four on Saturday. Oh okay,

39:29

thank you, Ron. I'm gonna leave you on hold

39:31

longer next time. Yeah.

39:34

I have lots of buddies in Arizona and whatever

39:36

they go, it's a seventy

39:38

one again here today, and I wait till like

39:40

July thirteenth, eight hit

39:43

one hundred and twenty four in Phoenix today. Yeah, how

39:45

is that? Yeah? You don't need a trigger

39:47

grill. You just put it on the sidewalk and cook

39:49

whatever you want to cook. There, Mo in Arizona

39:52

joining us, Hey, Mo, Hey,

39:54

go on, great sua

39:57

bro. Yeah, way to rename yourself on the

40:00

A. Murray interview. Uh,

40:03

he had to redeem himself, not me. I

40:05

know, I know, I'm good joke and I'm good kidding, okay,

40:07

but uh okay, I go before I get

40:10

my best and worst. Uh, Niners would

40:12

be fine regardless of who we have the quarterback,

40:14

because we can win with any system quarterback,

40:16

right, McLevin? Thank you? So having

40:19

said that my best and

40:21

worst, my worst was there was

40:23

nothing on yesterday, and so

40:26

I broke down and ordered the w

40:29

W pay review and it

40:31

was horrible at worst I've ever seen. The

40:34

best was Lakers

40:36

squeaking out of WAIM even though we really should

40:39

have lost that game when all those turners we had.

40:41

But uh, that's well, I got ye, all

40:43

right, thank you? All right?

40:46

This change sports history polling, Yeah,

40:49

Jim Thorpe. In nineteen thirteen, little connection

40:52

here football player signed a baseball contract

40:54

to play with the New York Giants. In nineteen

40:56

ninety two, Barry Bonds signed the highest single season

40:58

contract in MLB hit. He was making

41:00

four point seven million dollars a year

41:03

nineteen ninety two, and then John

41:06

Stockton in nineteen ninety five became the enda's career

41:08

assist leader passing Magic Gotham,

41:10

Barry Sanders going to be on the program tomorrow.

41:13

Kansas City Chiefs fan Melissa

41:15

Ethridge's going to join us. Who may

41:17

be working on a song for us, trying

41:19

to get confirmation on that, a new Chief song.

41:22

Well, we need a new Chiefs to do, and

41:24

I think she's a in the lab

41:26

trying to put that together. Okay, she gave us a

41:28

Kansas City chief song last year for the Super

41:31

Bowl. I'm going to assume that she's

41:33

putting pen to paper and have her guitar ready

41:35

and it'd be great to talk to her again. Final

41:38

results of the poll question myclove. I can't

41:41

say who won the trade, who came out

41:43

better as far as what you know now the

41:45

Lions steadily at sixty percent.

41:48

Our audience likes the Lions. I

41:51

think both got what they wanted to

41:53

get out of this. Now you can say, did

41:55

the Lions get more than they should have? Yeah?

41:57

Maybe, but the Ram

42:00

wanted Matthew Stafford, Yeah, mclub.

42:02

I thought it was gonna be eighty twenty the Rams one.

42:04

I feel like that's how the national perception

42:07

is that I don't think. I don't think NFL

42:09

fans know about Matthew Stafford. We've

42:12

seen highlights and we see his statistics.

42:15

I don't know if you truly know how he

42:18

quarterbacks a game and

42:20

there's no playoff games, no playoff resume.

42:24

You haven't seen him in a big moment, his

42:26

big moments Thanksgiving or

42:29

trying to play spoiler at the end of a season, Todd

42:31

would you learn on today's award nominated program

42:33

42:35

sure to mention that you work with a bunch of squares. Yes,

42:38

I do. McLevin, you

42:40

and Kyler Murray have a big hug coming your way next

42:42

time you see him. Yeah, Seeton

42:44

O'Connor. Albert Breer joined a very exclusive

42:47

club today, sort of like the SNL

42:49

five Timers club. He was the two days

42:51

in a row lead guest guy, Wow Friday

42:54

and Monday. Friday and Monday. That doesn't happen very

42:56

many times. In DP show his Yeah we let

42:58

him take a victory lamp, he said that Matthew Stafford

43:00

would be traded before the Super Bowl. Pauli, millionaire
