You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show

0:02

on Fox Sports Radio. Welcome

0:05

into the show. Everybody

0:08

is the Dan Patrick Show. As you just heard,

0:11

they're taking a break here and the Dan

0:13

that's much deserved.

0:16

The legends are the legends. And how

0:19

cool is it TJ that we get an opportunity

0:22

to sit in and fill in for the legendary

0:24

Dan Patrick show man. You

0:26

just want Dan to look back on this or if

0:28

he hears this and say, yeah, they

0:31

did a great job. Yeah,

0:34

yeah, that's pretty cool. And listen, Plex

0:36

we're missing We're missing one. We're missing one

0:39

of the Upper one Gang crew right now. Is

0:41

his his his Internet

0:43

or his box? Something was just

0:45

not function Yeah,

0:48

yeah, we had a tab bit of technical difficulties.

0:50

But but

0:53

maybe we'll get him in on a call a phoner

0:55

during the course of this this one of these

0:57

hours, but we're powering

1:00

on. Nonetheless, the first hour was an amazing

1:02

hour. In fact, it was a one topic

1:04

hour. We talked about Dwayne Askins

1:07

and and how the lack

1:09

of development has

1:12

possibly led to his

1:15

demise in the

1:17

nation's capital as the starting quarterback

1:19

and even as an employee

1:22

of the team. Uh. It's

1:24

interesting because this next topic

1:27

almost begs to say,

1:29

if it's done correctly, if if

1:32

you are taught and trained,

1:34

and you are made

1:37

aware of how much

1:40

influence and power you have not

1:43

only being a pretty awesome

1:45

athlete, but being

1:48

an awesome person. And I

1:50

think that that's one thing that has to

1:52

be made known when

1:54

talking about these different issues. I

1:57

don't put a color to being

1:59

good or being bad. And

2:02

so when you look at the

2:04

topics that take place and they ensue

2:07

and the conversations that ensue, I

2:09

look at it more so from how

2:12

have you been taught? What

2:14

has what has been the most important

2:16

components of what the DNA

2:19

of of who you are, the essence of

2:21

who you are as a person TJ. And TJ

2:24

being ironically, uh

2:27

well placed for our next topic because

2:29

he has a brother named j. J.

2:31

Watt. Not you,

2:34

but the all right, and and

2:37

JJ Watt had a speech the

2:39

other day. Um, we'll

2:42

play it for you. But but I just

2:45

I'm interested in and

2:47

what this conversation will entail

2:50

because in a lot of ways, you're

2:54

hearing someone who

2:57

has been dowed in, has

2:59

been taught to and has been

3:01

conditioned to understand what the

3:03

opportunity is. And we

3:06

can talk and discuss whether it's genuine,

3:08

whether it's not. But regardless

3:11

of what side you fall on, he's

3:14

in the know as to how to handle

3:16

himself. And this is one of those classic

3:18

teaching moments. Let's take a listen to JJ

3:21

Watton and we'll give some reactions on

3:23

the other side. You can't go out there and

3:25

you can't work out, you can't show up on time,

3:27

you can't practice, you can't want to go

3:29

out there and win. You shouldn't be here because

3:32

this is a privilege. It's the greatest job in the world.

3:34

You get to go out and play a game. And if you

3:36

can't care enough, even in week seventeen, even

3:38

when you're trash, when you're four and eleven,

3:41

if you can't care enough to go out there and give

3:43

everything you've got and try your hardest. So

3:47

that's how there are people every week

3:49

that still tweat you, that's still come up to you and

3:51

say, hey, we're still rooting for you, we're

3:53

still behind you. They have no reason whatsoever

3:55

to we stink, but they care

3:57

and they still want to win, and they still want you

4:00

to be great. That's why those people aren't

4:02

getting paid. We're getting paid handsomely

4:05

that's why, and that's that's

4:09

who I feel the most bad for is our fans and

4:12

the people who care so deeply in the city

4:14

and the people who love it and who

4:17

truly want it to be great, and

4:19

it's not. And that sucks as

4:21

a player to know that we're not

4:23

giving them what they deserve. That

4:27

was tjor excuse me, that was JJ

4:30

Watt speaking and addressing

4:32

the affairs of what's taking place with

4:34

his Uston Texans. They have had abysmal

4:38

season, and this

4:40

was his addressing to the state

4:43

of the union of his fan

4:45

base. He

4:47

faced the media, TJ. He faced the media.

4:50

Uh, he's a guy. We all

4:52

know who TJ. Why do I want to keep

4:54

calling him TJ? We all know who JJ

4:57

Watt is. He's one defensive

4:59

player that years, several times he's

5:01

he's been one of the most dominant football

5:04

players in the game, will go

5:06

down as probably one of the best defensive

5:08

linemen to ever play the game. But

5:11

in a moment of time where

5:14

not only his team is

5:16

vulnerable, but he's vulnerable, he has

5:18

not been the TJ. There

5:20

we go. He has not been the JJ Watt

5:23

that we have wanted him to be throughout

5:25

the years. You know it's a tongue

5:27

tire because you're a TJ and

5:29

he's JJ. And just

5:32

so we're clear on that, I'm getting stumbled

5:35

up on this, but he has been

5:37

vulnerable in terms of not being

5:39

what we've known grown to know

5:42

of JJ Watt. What

5:45

is your what is your take on

5:47

this this delivery

5:50

by JJ Watt? When

5:52

I first saw this interview,

5:54

I thought to myself, like wow, But

5:57

the more you think about it, and it was

6:00

for me very initial, why

6:04

is he telling the media it is I

6:07

personally believe if this

6:10

is how he truly feels, you

6:12

tell this to your teammates Wednesday

6:16

morning or it could be Monday morning. So

6:18

for people, Wednesday morning, every

6:21

Wednesday morning, the coach comes in front of the

6:23

team and you kind of the head coach

6:25

and you just kind of give you the state of the union

6:27

for the week and the game planning, who we

6:29

play, and how we want to approach this week. JJ

6:32

Watt could have gone to

6:35

Romeo Carnell said, can I get all the coaches

6:37

out? I want to talk to the team.

6:40

That's happened plenty of times on teams I've been

6:42

on and address the team directly

6:46

and if there are certain players

6:49

that you feel are doing

6:52

what you said, address

6:54

them directly. So

6:57

do you feel like it becomes disingenuous.

7:00

He's almost, in a way

7:03

reprimanding his teammates

7:06

through the media. Through the media, I wouldn't

7:08

say as disingenuous. I would say that

7:11

because he probably he feels

7:13

this way. But to say

7:16

this to the media to kind of get his message

7:18

across, Just get

7:20

your message across. You're

7:22

the best player on that team. Defensively,

7:25

you're going to the Hall of Fame. Everybody

7:28

on that team knows what you're capable

7:30

of in what you have done.

7:33

But for him to go in front of the media

7:36

was almost like, I'm the guy

7:38

that's working really hard and

7:40

not everybody is working

7:43

as hard as I'm working. I just want to

7:45

let you guys know this that I'm

7:47

trying, but everybody else is

7:49

not trying as much as I'm trying. So

7:52

self self preservation,

7:54

yes, you don't do that,

7:57

like you get up in front of the team because

7:59

you have the you have the cachet to where

8:02

you can do that. You jj watt and

8:04

let the team know. And then if you feel like so

8:06

and so isn't doing what he's supposed to do. And

8:09

you say, no disrespect to anyone, but so and

8:11

so I need you to get me more. You don't

8:13

call him out in front of his peers, because as

8:15

we know, it's grown men that can turn a

8:17

different way. But when

8:20

they know, when they know you've

8:22

put the work in players

8:25

which are grown men, they can take

8:27

that. If they know JJ Watt is

8:29

working this telof they can take that and say,

8:31

you know what, you're right, you're right, I'm gonna give you more

8:33

because I haven't been given it my all. They'll

8:36

they'll give you more. And so that's the only thing

8:38

that I don't like. Do it privately,

8:41

you do not have to go through the media to get your

8:43

point across to certain teammates because they're I

8:46

guarantee there's a few

8:48

teammates that he's probably talking about and

8:51

he did that just for them. Do

8:53

it privately? Does that

8:55

compromise him as a

8:58

leader on that team? How

9:00

how should they view him? Like, like, I'll

9:02

say this, if I'm on that team

9:05

and I heard that, I

9:08

honestly, even

9:10

if I even if I were give

9:13

even if I wasn't one of those guys that

9:16

I felt he was speaking on

9:18

and having that type of dialogue

9:21

about to the fans about the

9:23

team, I still would

9:25

feel compelled to have to go talk to

9:27

him and be like, look, bro, like our

9:30

fans are our fans, and I love our fans

9:32

as well, and I feel horrible

9:34

that our team isn't giving a better

9:37

product than what we are.

9:39

But this is your family in

9:42

here, and for as long as they

9:44

wear the same colors as you do, as long as

9:46

they have to go to work, as you're saying,

9:48

as as as you do, let's

9:51

keep it in hout. Let's keep it like this one like

9:54

to that level you can, you can address

9:56

the fans in a way where

10:00

you're you're supported. You and I both know

10:02

this. You and I both know this. The

10:05

guys on the team, once they saw that interview,

10:08

the ones that you cool with, got on the phone

10:10

or started texting. They're talking about them

10:12

and not good, not good at all good

10:15

And people act like that does not happen,

10:17

No, that that happened, bro, Bro,

10:20

what's wrong with j J? What are what are you doing this phone?

10:22

Like? They talked about them because they

10:24

don't like this. Just address

10:27

the team or

10:29

whomever you're talking about individually.

10:32

That's what you do. When the

10:34

team is and and listen, I've had more

10:36

than enough seasons

10:38

where as the face of of a franchise

10:41

for for a few years that

10:43

I addressed our fan base.

10:46

But one thing that I would never do. You're

10:48

not gonna point the finger, not not in trying

10:51

to and in an

10:53

attempt to to make our

10:55

fans feel better about us being

10:58

some trash as a football team.

11:00

I will not. I would not sacrifice

11:04

my teammates by

11:06

saying things that could be considered

11:08

and perceived the diminishing

11:11

what they are, who they are, what they

11:13

bring to the table. I'd rather offer,

11:16

you know, solutions. We gotta work. We've

11:18

got to work to figure this

11:20

thing out. It's it's difficult

11:23

to to be losing this way.

11:26

Um, there are so many different ways you

11:28

can address your your fan base

11:31

without alienating its teammates

11:34

or yourself. He was alienating his teammates

11:36

and saying it's

11:38

not me, it's them. It's

11:41

kind of what it kind of sounded like. And that's

11:43

the biggest problem. And again,

11:46

you're J. J. Watt. You don't have to

11:48

do that. You don't have to do that. You just go

11:51

to the individual or the team

11:54

and you can get your same point across

11:56

simple All

11:59

right, that's that's This one is

12:01

uh yeah, this one is

12:03

one I would like to talk

12:05

to. Our next guest. He's coming up shortly.

12:07

We're gonna have on one of my former

12:10

12:14

joining the show. And Danny Warfole was that dude

12:16

when he was playing under Steve Spurry in Florida

12:18

Whitney. He was a bad bad

12:21

boy. Yeah, they were both bad boys,

12:24

Coach Spurry and Danny, And then they

12:26

came in medicine Washington, and well,

12:29

we're just gonna take a break. But on the other side

12:31

of this break, we're gonna have Danny Warfole

12:33

on and we'll get some perspective

12:35

from him and talk about some of the things he's got

12:37

going on in his life. Right now, you

12:39

12:42

Dan Patrick Show. Um yeah,

12:45

and we are the up

12:47

15:17

to The Dan Patrick Show. I'm

15:20

LeVar Arrington. That's t J. Hushman Zada,

15:23

our next guest, a very esteemed

15:26

one. He's done something

15:28

that most people will never do in their

15:30

lives. That's hoist.

15:33

Well maybe didn't hoist it because they're pretty heavy

15:35

from what I hear, but he put his hands on

15:37

it for certain. Because he's a quarterback, he wents strong

15:40

enough to hoist it on. He's

15:42

my old teammate, so I figure out take

15:44

a little jet. Anyways,

15:46

our next guest, the one and only

15:49

Danny Warfulf, the Heisman

15:51

Trophy winner from the

15:53

University of Florida. Gator chomp,

15:56

Gator bait. That's the guy. What's

15:58

going on, Broski? What's

16:01

up? LeVar? What's up? DJ? Man? You got

16:03

my competitive juices flowing? We're

16:05

on zoom. You'd see I'm holding the trophy up

16:07

right now, listening it,

16:10

pressing it.

16:14

Hey, Danny, regardless, you

16:16

got it, you have it, and that

16:19

is important. Believe you me. I respect.

16:21

That's right. How have you been, man? How

16:23

is life going? What's going on in Danny Warfol's

16:25

world? At the sound it seems like some

16:27

really big stuff you got going on here. Talk

16:30

to me a little bit about uh as

16:32

a Hall of Fame quarterback and how you been

16:34

trophy winner? Like, you know, you're pretty

16:36

decorated and and maybe the most

16:38

decorated in the University of Florida's

16:41

history. What you got going on right now?

16:44

Man? We've been busy in a lot of

16:46

different ways. You know, my main job

16:49

is the director of Desire Street Ministries.

16:51

We work in under resource neighborhoods

16:53

all over the country helping people that live

16:55

there, Uh, put together programs

16:58

to help their neighborhoods and the community. So

17:00

that's my main job. And then staying

17:02

busy now with the Warfare

17:04

Trophy, honoring college football

17:06

players to do community service. And

17:09

then uh, you know, doing my best

17:11

effort, although it's one of the hardest

17:13

things I've done. Be a good dad, be a good husband,

17:15

man. That's that's

17:17

some good, good stuff.

17:19

That's not always easy. So I'm working hard

17:21

on all fronts. And so so you bring up

17:24

the Warfare Trophy. Who's

17:26

the finalist and how did they get

17:28

nominated? Yeah, so

17:30

we had about a hundred

17:32

nominees from across the country Division

17:35

one football players and probably

17:37

together, you know, I'm

17:39

estimating somewhere between fifty thousand

17:41

and one hundred thousand hours

17:44

of community service. And we have

17:46

a committee that sort of sists it down

17:48

to our semifinalists, and this year

17:50

there were nine just truly remarkable

17:52

young men. And then we have a selection

17:55

committee that that voted includes you

17:57

know a lot of broadcast

18:00

pastors and coaches and former

18:02

winners of the Workful Trophy, and three

18:04

finalists are just incredibly

18:06

young men. Shy words a quarterback for Georgia

18:09

Southern Sam Ellinger

18:11

from Texas and Teton Saltice

18:13

from New Mexico. And

18:16

the work that they've done

18:18

in their communities, these things that they've done

18:21

during COVID is truly inspiring.

18:23

And I wish we had three trophies

18:26

to present because they're they're all winners. I

18:28

think it's amazing the work

18:30

that you do. I've always respected you

18:33

you You've always been a man of faith, a

18:35

man of your family,

18:37

and a commitment to your teammates.

18:40

And I, you know, experienced that firsthand.

18:43

You played and we played in Washington together.

18:46

Now it may be a different place, it may

18:48

not, you know, who knows. But I would

18:50

love just knowing what you represent, what

18:52

your award represents, you being

18:55

so developed in the community, and just

18:57

what that represents to people. What

19:00

what's your take on what took place with

19:02

Haskins and DC and you

19:04

know, just I'd love to hear your perspective on

19:06

it. Oh Man, Well,

19:09

honestly, one of my goals in life is not

19:11

to pretend to comment

19:13

on something that I'm not totally in the

19:15

nuance. I'm a little behind the news

19:18

on that front. I know that some things

19:20

happen there. But honestly, if I were

19:22

to speak on that here, I wouldn't I wouldn't

19:24

be speaking from a knowledge base. Let me

19:27

let me rephrase it for you. Let me let me

19:29

let me put it in a different a different regard

19:32

if you're if you're in a situation

19:35

as the quarterback of a

19:37

National Football League team, and

19:40

and maybe the things that are being said

19:42

about you are kind of

19:44

disparaging and attack bit. The

19:48

commitment level isn't there, The professionalism

19:51

may not be there. It just

19:53

seems to go down the same lines

19:55

of what you're saying in terms of being a

19:58

person of service, being in the commune unity.

20:00

Just talk to me from the perspective of how

20:03

being a great person could

20:05

play a major part in being a great

20:08

player. And maybe that's what was missing

20:10

here with the Dwayne Haskins

20:12

situation. Sure well,

20:14

just speaking generally, you

20:16

know, I think what makes a great

20:19

teammate Obviously you've got to be committed

20:21

and excellent. But there's this idea when

20:23

you're on a team about being selfless.

20:26

You know, when you put yourself before

20:28

the team. We've all seen so

20:30

many examples where that usually doesn't end

20:32

well. I mean, I remember being on a high school

20:34

team and we were by far

20:38

the less talented team going into

20:40

a Nation state championship game.

20:42

This team had probably thirteen players go to

20:44

college scholarships from one high school

20:46

team, and we smoked them.

20:49

It was just a great example of

20:52

when you don't put yourself

20:54

first, what's amazing. And I think

20:56

that's really what you know,

20:59

going back to the Wilful Trophy is what

21:01

what that's about is people that do that in the

21:03

community and put people that do that across the board,

21:06

and it makes it makes for better teams,

21:08

it makes for better neighborhoods, better communities,

21:10

in a better world. Danny,

21:12

I got a two part question for you. You You bring

21:14

it up again, the Warful Trophy. Give me

21:17

some notable winners of the past, and

21:19

would you being an Heisman Trophy winner.

21:22

Um, obviously you can't tell us who you

21:24

voted for, but how do you see that vote

21:26

going. Yeah, Well, the first

21:28

question, we've had some

21:31

very high profile winners. You know, when you think

21:33

of guys like like Tim Tebow, and

21:35

you know it's about his high profile, a guy you

21:38

can get who deservedly

21:40

won the Wilful Trophy years ago. But

21:42

we really do our best to focus

21:45

on the community service and not let

21:47

the notoriety of the players

21:49

kind of dictate. So, you know, we've had some winners

21:51

from from some big school you

21:53

know, Oklahoma, Florida,

21:56

you know, Alabama, you know, but we've had two

21:59

winners Western Michigan.

22:02

You know, We've had different different players from from

22:04

all over the country, big and small schools,

22:06

and so we we really try to look at

22:08

the resume of community service more than

22:10

the I'm gonna give you a name that you can

22:12

look forward to for this award in the future. His name

22:14

is Cameron McDonald at Florida State. He does

22:17

a lot for people out in Talis in

22:19

California. So that's the name that could possibly

22:21

accounted in the future. Just FYI, you

22:24

got it. Well, we'll keep our keep our eyes

22:26

open. And to your other question, you

22:28

know, I think that there's

22:30

four very deserving Hysman Trophy

22:33

finalists. I think you can make the case

22:36

for all of them. You know, I'm

22:38

I do my best to be unbiased, but I

22:40

think there's no real such thing as unbiased.

22:42

But when I see what Kyle Traff did is

22:45

truly remarkable. You know, I just saw through eleven

22:48

games he has better stats

22:50

than Joe Burrow did last year through eleven

22:52

games, and that was just a slam dunk last

22:54

year. So I'll be happy

22:56

for whoever wins. But I'm a big fan

22:59

of Kyle Traff, not just his staff

23:01

on the field, but his character. The

23:03

way he's been loyal to university

23:06

even when he wasn't playing. Just so

23:08

many things about his story are inspiring to me.

23:11

All Right, I gotta ask this as my final

23:13

question, based off of what your reasoning

23:15

just was, have you ever put

23:18

a vote in for a defender?

23:24

Um, let's be I

23:26

think you may have. You may have

23:28

been the first one that I did

23:30

that. Yeah, he

23:33

did? He did he know this? Did

23:36

you guys talk about it? He's probably

23:38

not telling the truth, But but that's

23:40

a that's a nice little lie right there. That's

23:42

I like that. I like that. I

23:44

definitely have. I definitely have in the

23:47

past. Uh. I can't remember

23:49

for sure if you were one of those or not. I'd

23:51

have to go back in the check the CPA

23:53

auditing. But you definitely

23:56

were deserving I'm sure appreciated.

23:58

That is Danny war for the Warful

24:01

Trophy Award. The finalists

24:03

have been named and We'll be announced on ESPN's

24:06

The Home Depot College Football Awards

24:08

on Thursday, January the

24:10

seventh, at seven pm Eastern time.

24:13

We're sure to appreciate you coming on, good

24:15

brother. You have always been a person

24:18

that you know, you can feel proud

24:20

about, not only being a teammate, but modeling

24:22

the way you do things after. Appreciate

24:24

it and continued success to you. Man, Well,

24:27

I appreciate it, and congrats to both of you guys

24:29

forging uh success beyond the

24:31

field as well. Keep up the good work. Indeed,

24:33

we appreciate you. Okay, you take care? All

24:36

right. That's Danny Warful and he

24:38

really was cool to be around. Man. That's super

24:41

dope dude. Man. All right, so we got some more

24:43

callers. Uh, let's take some

24:45

calls, Dwayne and Houston.

24:48

Come on in what you got a

24:53

right? Turn your radio down?

24:57

I have a radio long? Oh okay, all

25:00

right, well okay, yeah, take us

25:02

off your speaker phone. Something you did got his echo

25:04

in with you? Oh kay,

25:07

okay, we're good. Let's get a little

25:10

better now, come on, let's go. What you

25:12

get brother? All

25:15

that's bad? I

25:17

don't know, man, I don't know. We might have to move

25:20

on from your player. Something's wrong you having

25:22

the tough technical difficulties. Bro.

25:25

Let's go to Dwayne and Houston, or

25:28

excuse me, Dick, Let's go to Dick and North

25:33

Dick in North Carolina.

25:35

Hey, guys, what's up? Comment on Dwayne Haskins.

25:37

Yeah, new supports. I'm really enjoying the show. Yeah,

25:40

go ahead, thank you. So

25:42

so. Your last guest

25:45

commented on this as well. But I believe as a former

25:47

coach, we're seeing more of a mean

25:50

mentality or culture versus a

25:52

wee um culture. And these

25:54

kids are picking up their stuff and moving to another school

25:56

or moving to another team when they're not winning or not getting

25:58

playing time. And sports is

26:01

more more than just that. It's more than just

26:03

what it's about, understanding how to get

26:05

through adversity, understanding

26:07

each other, communicating with teammates. Things

26:09

are going well, and those things

26:12

are being lost at the youth level and having to be retaught

26:14

at the college professional in high school levels.

26:16

So I just wanted to hear your thoughts on that. And

26:19

I don't mind J. J. Watt calling out during

26:22

his press because

26:24

pure pressure, I think is one of the strongest

26:26

things to get somebody else to do with what

26:29

you want to do, and he's calling out his teammates for not completing

26:31

their tasks for their goal to the day. They have

26:33

one game left though, so it's like, you

26:36

have one game left. It would have been better had you done

26:38

this in the middle of the season, and you probably could have

26:40

salvaged your season. But to do it now to

26:43

the media, I'm not so

26:45

sure that's

26:48

a good point as well. But sometimes that momentum

26:50

at the end of the season leads into the next season

26:52

as well. So maybe that's why he didn't. He just had to

26:54

let it off his chest before the season ended.

26:56

He had to let it off his chest. But doesn't

26:58

that kind of go down the me mentality

27:01

lane. Yeah,

27:03

but he's trying to do it's best for the community and letting,

27:06

you know, letting his teammates. No, Um,

27:08

you know, we don't know what's going on in JJ's

27:10

head. And and I understand

27:12

your perspective as well, but uh, I

27:15

appreciate you guys today, and you guys

27:17

are doing a great job. Thank you. Appreciate what a call

27:19

Dick appreciate you man. Yeah,

27:21

I mean listen, I'm not I'm not putting

27:23

him down. No, what he's saying. So

27:26

let's not misconstrue what's being being

27:28

said. We're just giving you a perspective. It is perspective

27:31

though, if we're in that locker room

27:33

and he had done

27:35

this, and we're on that team, we're

27:38

looking at it like why that's

27:40

that's you're doing unnecessary damage?

27:43

Right, Like, if we're being honest, I

27:46

can feel bad that our team has

27:48

four and eleven, right, four

27:50

and eleven. Now you want to do this now

27:52

and we're four and eleven? It does? It serves

27:54

no purpose other than self preservation.

27:57

I mean, if you're if we're being one hundred percent

27:59

honest, it only serves as

28:02

you getting yourself out of the

28:04

way. So, yeah, you got a question.

28:07

Were you guys this is kind of too part, but were

28:09

you ever part of player only

28:11

meetings? And did they work? I

28:14

have been, and yes, oh player only

28:16

meetings. Yeah, when you're when you expect to

28:18

be a good team and things don't

28:20

go well, player only meeting when

28:22

things are going well and there

28:25

are players that aren't doing

28:27

what they're supposed to do, player

28:30

only meetings, So it happens all the time.

28:32

It can be good or bad. And

28:34

so yes, those things happen. So

28:38

the Steelers had a players only

28:40

meeting this week. Do

28:43

you think that that's going to be

28:46

a catalyst for them to take

28:49

that into this They're going to rest Big

28:51

Ben from every every report that's coming

28:53

out. You go into the

28:55

situation where people

28:58

are questioning, continue into question

29:01

can they do it in the playoffs? Clearly

29:05

they're aware of it. If the Steelers

29:07

win, I mean, if the Steelers are to

29:09

lose to Cleveland, who would they play in the first

29:11

round? And let's say Buffalo wins, so that means Buffalo

29:13

will get the second seed. The Steelers

29:16

will get. Player

29:19

only meetings work when

29:21

they work. That means if you win, oh, that

29:23

player only meeting worked when you

29:25

lose? Why do I mean? Why we waste our

29:27

time? Why you waste our time? And so

29:30

it has its purpose, but

29:32

they can be a little overrated. Dal

29:36

Las Vegas. What you got, playboy?

29:40

Yes, well, I just want to tell

29:42

you appreciate you too, as

29:44

men. Thank you, I

29:46

appreciate thank you for appreciating

29:49

us. Yeah. See, that's

29:51

that's the problem with with

29:54

everything, is that you

29:57

know, we want to pattlem you know,

29:59

we want to pattle lies everything.

30:01

We want to put everything in a certain box.

30:04

You know, athletes are athletes.

30:07

Well you know, before they were athletes, they

30:09

were kids. Yeah, right,

30:12

I mean, And the thing is that

30:14

it starts with the parents.

30:17

You know. M. Charles Barkley when

30:19

he was playing said, you

30:21

know, don't look as me as a role

30:24

model. Look at your

30:26

parents, look at your families.

30:28

Find somebody in your families and

30:31

look at them as a role model. We

30:33

start telling these kids from a very young

30:36

age when just people in general,

30:39

you're good at this, you're good at this. We

30:41

don't round them out as human

30:43

beings. You're talking to somebody

30:46

who did thirteen years in prison

30:48

for high level drug trafficking. You

30:51

know who's on life par role Now who's

30:54

you know, paying for the consequences

30:57

of my past? Wow?

31:00

And now now I have sixteen

31:02

years clean and sober. And

31:05

it all starts between the years,

31:08

like you two gentlemen said, right,

31:11

man, you know, it's

31:14

who you associate with. If

31:16

you know, if you associate with thugs,

31:19

you become a thug. You associate

31:21

with criminals, you're a criminal.

31:23

If you associate with good people,

31:26

you become because you adapt

31:28

those behaviors. And

31:31

what happened, What happens

31:33

to these athletes is they

31:37

never had First of all, they don't have

31:39

a handle money. We got to stop

31:42

putting it on African Americans

31:44

white. It's it's the younger

31:47

generation in

31:50

general. They don't know

31:52

how to handle money because

31:54

all they've been told is you're

31:57

a good athlete, you're great. So

31:59

they end up getting

32:02

by you know what I mean by people

32:04

let him. Oh he did this, But you know what,

32:07

we're not worried about that because he can do

32:09

this. Yeah,

32:11

Dwayne, you know, Dwayne Haskin

32:13

for incident Ohio State.

32:16

I lived in Ohio, in Columbus,

32:18

Ohio. Those athletes

32:21

are treated like gods. Women

32:26

flocked to him. They go to bars,

32:28

they get free drinks, you

32:30

know, and and now they

32:33

have no responsibility except

32:36

learn the game, plan play

32:39

when after the game, let's

32:41

go party. We

32:43

appreciate it, man, it's a good call.

32:46

Dale. We appreciate that. Man. And listen,

32:49

you know, TJ. He said something very

32:51

very intriguing to me, and I

32:54

want to ask you about this. He

32:56

said appreciation. There wasn't

32:59

an appreciation. I'm wondering,

33:03

is that a major issue that

33:05

we're dealing with with millennials

33:07

and with this this this new age

33:09

athlete is the like

33:11

for me, I look at it if I had an appreciation

33:14

for my job, if I had an appreciation

33:16

for my teammates, if

33:18

I had an appreciation for my

33:21

accomplishments and the people

33:23

the fans. Do I

33:25

do what Dwayne Haskins did? Do

33:28

I have Do I have an appreciation

33:31

for my teammates? If I

33:33

do with what JJ Watt did?

33:37

Is there just a lack of in

33:40

real true form?

33:43

Is there a lack of appreciation in

33:47

today's today's athlete when

33:50

you when you talk specifically, talk

33:52

specifically the NFL. That could

33:54

possibly be the case, and a

33:57

lot of guys feel like, Oh, I'm gonna make

33:59

it to the league, and they don't realize

34:02

the biggest thing is how

34:05

lucky you are to make

34:07

it and plan the NFL. And

34:09

I don't think they look at it from that perspective.

34:12

It's it's a gift to

34:15

be in the NFL, and we

34:18

I took it for granted. A

34:21

lot of players take it for granted the

34:24

NFL. It doesn't matter who it is.

34:27

Great. The face of the league will

34:29

retire, They'll find another face of the league. The

34:32

show goes on with or

34:35

without you. You either with

34:37

us or you against us. You're either gonna

34:39

follow along and do what's you're supposed

34:42

to do, or we're gonna move

34:44

on without you. The show goes on,

34:47

and so if you're gonna be in the show, which is

34:49

the NFL, you need to appreciate

34:51

it while you're there, because the show does not

34:53

last forever. Thanks for listening to The Dan

34:55

Patrick Show podcast. Be sure to catch us

34:58

35:07

stream us live on the Peacock app. You

35:10

are listening to The Dan Patrick Show.

35:13

He and the Dan Nets are on a

35:16

little bit of leave, a little bit

35:18

of rest time, a little bit of R and

35:20

R. But we just

35:22

came back up in here with some fun music

35:25

and we we're just getting that little vib on.

35:27

That's all. Give

35:29

it up. This that barbecue,

35:33

the parents getting drunk music right here. I'll

35:35

tell you what. That's that big whiz, that's that

35:37

slap them them average down. That's that that

35:40

hit that deck. You do it? Okay,

35:43

guys, So next

35:46

topic of conversation here, as we're continuing

35:49

a very very consistent

35:51

theme of just kind of development.

35:55

Uh. It's interesting. This week we had

35:57

a little bit of a beef take

36:00

place over social media

36:03

where which,

36:05

by the way, just so we have a

36:07

backstory, Lebron James,

36:09

Brownie Brownie has a

36:12

tap bit of a history uh on

36:14

on social media. At one

36:16

point he got a little bit of hot

36:18

water not too long ago for

36:21

for uh, you know, partaking

36:25

in what we'll call some extracurriculars

36:27

that have since become legalized

36:29

in many places of the country. If

36:32

you could dig what I'm what I'm putting down. Yeah,

36:34

all right, So it's interesting.

36:37

The latest situation to take

36:39

place has Lebron James

36:42

and his wife Savannah

36:44

up in arms, uh

36:47

basically hit their

36:49

their child liked

36:52

a liked a

36:55

picture of Scottie Pippins

36:57

soon to be ex wife. I think they're going

37:00

through the divorce.

37:02

Listen. I don't like jumping into

37:04

two wives and personal

37:07

stuff, but it's news,

37:09

and we got to kind of talk about it because

37:12

it involves athletes and it hadn't

37:14

involved sports. But makes

37:16

me a tabit uncomfortable, But I still

37:18

nonetheless, I'm going to power through

37:20

and we're gonna get this discussion off

37:23

the ground. So Larsa,

37:26

who was the chief target of a

37:28

meme an artist,

37:31

did not to hold back on

37:33

on the assessment. Something

37:36

took place where Brawnie liked a

37:38

very provocative picture

37:42

and was it provocative?

37:44

I didn't see it. It was I believe it was just

37:47

like a headshot almost.

37:48

I did not see it. It was just like a

37:50

regular picture from my knowledge. It just

37:53

kind of seemed as though the way it was

37:55

positioned, it was almost like Brownie

37:57

was sliding in the DM

38:00

on the situation. Um

38:04

anyway, lebron and wife

38:06

wanting to shield their

38:08

oldest son from from

38:11

need let's scrutiny, um

38:14

basically put out there you

38:16

you know will sue you and

38:20

and not in those words, Uh,

38:22

you're spreading disgusting lies.

38:25

Weirdo. Uh,

38:28

some of these stories are so disgusting.

38:30

The fact that my son's friends

38:32

can't like my picks without

38:34

some people writing some weirdo stuff

38:37

is crazy. It just became

38:39

a very very interesting back

38:41

and forth in terms of

38:45

how this was was all, how

38:47

this all came about, how

38:49

it was interpreted, and

38:52

how it was handled. Now,

38:57

going back to our topics

38:59

and what we've been discussing all show

39:01

long from Dwayne Haskins and

39:03

the way he's handled things to JJ

39:07

Watton in the way that he's handled things,

39:10

to bringing on Danny Warful and

39:12

the way he has handled things. Now

39:14

the question becomes TJ.

39:19

When you have a situation where you

39:22

have a high profile dad, the

39:24

highest of high profiles, and you

39:26

have a son that is obviously

39:29

no way to not be scrutinized if

39:31

they're on social media.

39:34

Are they handling Brawnie

39:36

the right way? Does Brownie

39:39

have the opportunity to be just

39:41

a normal young man that experiences

39:44

what normal young people

39:46

experience. What is the right

39:48

answer in this scenario, because this sets

39:50

the tone for what it's going to be in the future

39:53

for Brawnie when he gets older. That's

39:56

their child. He's still a child.

39:58

He's sixteen years old, and so they're

40:01

handling it the way they see fit. So

40:03

that's the right way. Those are his

40:05

parents and so like

40:08

you like a picture and they make a big deal about

40:10

it. The people like come on

40:13

and the scrutiny

40:15

that Lebron has been

40:17

under since he was about sixteen or

40:20

younger. He's

40:22

the perfect mentor for this because

40:26

he's been down this road before. It

40:28

wasn't a social media error, so the scrutiny

40:31

wasn't as as fast.

40:33

But to me, when that's your son and

40:35

that's your child, there's no wrong way to handle

40:38

it. Okay, Well,

40:40

I hope you guys on the phone lines are listening.

40:43

We're gonna dial into to

40:45

this conversation in particular, how

40:48

should you approach a social

40:50

media riff? Should you have handled

40:53

it publicly? Should

40:56

you have handled it differently?

40:58

We want to know your ideas on it.
