0:05

0:05

We made it to a meet Friday early

0:08

0:44

talk to the Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle

0:46

in about fifteen minutes from now, and

0:49

the talented Rebecca Low from NBC

0:51

Sports will join us from Churchill

0:53

Downs. Pacers close out the Bucks

0:56

four games to two. The Knicks close out

0:58

the seventy six ers. I know, so it says

1:00

four games to two. It felt like

1:02

it was more of a slugfest than oh,

1:04

we won four games to two, because

1:07

if you take the combined total

1:09

of points, two points

1:11

separated these two teams, So

1:13

now the Knicks will face the Pacers coming up

1:16

on Monday. Calves Magic Game

1:18

six tonight for entertainment purposes

1:21

only. According to DraftKings, the

1:23

Cabs are getting four against the Magic,

1:26

the Clippers getting eight against the MAVs,

1:29

So uh, Luca, the over under is

1:31

thirty three and a half for him tonight.

1:34

All right, good morning.

1:35

If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading

1:37

the app. It is Churchill Down's

1:39

Kentucky Derby weekend and we'll explore

1:41

that a little bit later on as well.

1:44

We got to play the day stat of the day poll question.

1:46

All of that coming up. Stat of the Day is always brought

1:48

to you by Panadi America, the

1:50

official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show.

1:54

This first down, we're brought to you by McGuire's

1:56

new hybrid ceramic wash in wax.

2:00

You can boost protection with the extreme

2:03

water beating technology the next time

2:05

you wash your car, truck, wonderful

2:07

products with McGuire's reflect your

2:10

passion. All right, Seaton poll question, what

2:12

are we starting off with? First down?

2:14

We can start with has Patrick beverly played

2:17

his last.

2:17

Game in the NBA? Okay, Yes,

2:20

or no.

2:20

Late in the game Milwaukee Bucks,

2:22

Patrick Beverley, he was on the

2:24

bench and he threw a basketball

2:27

to a fan, hit her in the side of

2:29

the face, and then he wanted

2:31

the ball back. They threw the ball back

2:33

to him, and then he threw the ball

2:35

again. So he

2:37

was interviewed after the game

2:40

by an ESPN reporter producer,

2:43

and Patrick Beverly wasn't very forthcoming.

2:46

Subscribe to my part.

2:49

So you can't interview me down, okay?

2:55

Cool?

2:56

So again, there were a couple times within

2:58

a bucket or two previous

3:00

games they all been able.

3:01

To kind of get over that humber.

3:02

Maybe was it anything dated

3:04

in particular, or was it just one of those where the

3:06

bucket didn't go down? There wasn't the stop

3:09

they made one? What kind of prevented that

3:11

you off from me able to get over like

3:13

you haven't.

3:14

The mood that might please or just get out

3:16

the circle please for me, please, ma'am.

3:18

If you're not subscribed to my pot, I appreciate it that,

3:20

thank you.

3:21

Okay.

3:22

I don't care about anything basketball wise.

3:24

I want to know why you threw the basketball

3:27

at this fan.

3:29

Twice.

3:31

You're thirty five, okay, I

3:34

don't subscribe to your podcast, so he

3:37

probably won't come on this show. We invited

3:39

him. At what point do

3:41

you go, you know what, this might be a good idea.

3:44

I'm going to shut this fan up by

3:46

throwing the basketball at her man.

3:48

I'm gonna do it again. Okay,

3:51

At what.

3:52

Point does the commissioner, Well, I mean,

3:54

he's going to find him suspended, but

3:56

he's a free agent.

3:58

If you're Milwaukee, is that what you want?

4:02

He used to be a thing.

4:04

He was a defensive guy, although

4:06

I think a lot of times when you're the defensive

4:08

guy, that gets overstated. He's

4:11

had a good career, nice career,

4:13

but most of his career has been

4:16

highlighted by or lowlighted by

4:18

things he says or things he does. And

4:21

last night, you

4:23

don't want that product in your league.

4:25

If you're the commissioner, you know, maybe

4:27

you suspend him indefinitely, but

4:30

you know, somebody will probably pick him up

4:32

and well,

4:34

hopefully they subscribe to his podcast.

4:37

There.

4:37

But yeah, watching that last night, and

4:40

I didn't watch it in real time, but I did

4:42

see it after the fact. And then he

4:45

doesn't want to talk and he's pushing the

4:47

microphone out of the way a couple of times, and

4:50

you can't do that either. So do

4:53

I think he's played his last game? I'll

4:57

say no, because

5:00

it feels like there's always a team that goes,

5:03

you know, we could use somebody like that, like

5:05

the seventy six ers. To me, could use Draymond

5:08

Green. Now

5:10

we watched Draymond Green do stupid things. But

5:12

then there's always a team or teams

5:14

out there that go, you know what, we need that kind

5:16

of thing. We need that kind of guy. We need

5:18

that spark, we need an edge, you

5:21

know, Rajah Belle, Bruce

5:23

Bowen, you know, you need those guys.

5:27

So maybe somebody picks him up at age

5:29

thirty five. But yeah, you're watching

5:31

that hits the woman side of the face.

5:34

Now, maybe things were said. I

5:36

don't know what was said, in fairness to

5:39

Patrick Beverly, at least going, you

5:42

know, nuclear on her. Now, those

5:44

are words that you know could have been said.

5:47

And Patrick Beverly, who has

5:49

a podcast, must be a wordsmith. So

5:51

he should have been able to respond back to these

5:53

people without throwing the basketball

5:56

twice.

5:58

I mean even know he was

6:00

playing.

6:02

Either, you see a stat line you

6:04

didn't miss much.

6:05

Yeah, So Patrick

6:08

Beverley and the Bucks have been eliminated.

6:10

Here's Doc Rivers talking about playing

6:12

without his best players last

6:15

game.

6:16

We're the first team in NBA history to

6:18

win a game with your two best scores out.

6:20

I mean that's history. That's not like

6:23

one game one year. It's hard

6:25

to do, man like take

6:27

Yoki Cha Murray away, you know,

6:30

go to each team and take your two best players away.

6:32

It's gonna be.

6:33

Hard, Yes, it is. What a weird

6:35

year in Milwaukee.

6:37

You get your coach, he finally gets

6:39

a chance, You fire your coach. You bring

6:41

in Doc Rivers and it felt like he

6:43

was held at gunpoint to take the job. And

6:46

then you lose. Jannis

6:48

Dame came back, but you know, in limited

6:50

fashion last night, and you get eliminated.

6:53

You get eliminated by a pacer team that just

6:55

loves to run. They go And

6:58

sometimes you look at teams now, I don't think the

7:00

talent on Indiana's great. You

7:02

know, Tyrese Haliburton is a wonderful player.

7:06

But sometimes it's the collection

7:08

of talent that makes you a great

7:10

team.

7:11

Like the Knicks.

7:11

I don't think the Knicks are you know, a

7:13

talented team, but I think they're a

7:15

great team because you put all the pieces

7:18

together. And speaking of the Knicks

7:20

last night, you know what, that's what you want out

7:22

of a great player. Jalen Brunson

7:25

is. He's one of those guys

7:27

that you're going, well, let me see if he can do it again,

7:29

and then he does it again. Well, let

7:31

me see if he can do it in the playoffs, and then he does

7:34

it in the playoffs. And they did a really good job

7:36

for a couple of games on him, and

7:38

he sort of picks his spots.

7:41

There's spots on the floor and he probably

7:44

learned a lot from playing with Luca

7:46

in Dallas. He just kind

7:48

of gets in these pockets and

7:50

he knows what to do and he goes at his

7:52

own pace.

7:54

Boy, he's lethal, and

7:57

it.

7:57

Still feels like yeah, but he's

7:59

like the second player you won on your

8:01

roster like he was in Dallas.

8:04

Now he's a number one. He's a true number one,

8:06

whether you like it or not, whether you're willing to admit

8:09

to it, because you watch and you go, how

8:11

does he do that? He

8:13

just knows how to play basketball, and

8:15

his supporting cast they

8:18

all fit together. But it's

8:20

not a great group of talent. You don't even have Julius

8:22

Randall in there. But they go

8:25

in and they beat Philadelphia and

8:27

that was a wonderful That's one of those where

8:29

you go that should have been the Eastern Conference Finals,

8:32

just with everything attached to it, endings,

8:35

missed calls, guys stepping up,

8:37

big Nicks did a great job on Tyrese

8:39

Maxi and Jalen

8:42

Brunson and company lead the charge.

8:44

And now they got the Pacers coming up on Monday.

8:47

So Cabs at the Magic tonight, Clippers

8:49

at the Mavericks. That is game six

8:52

as well. What else do we have, Seaton.

8:55

Well, we were talking a little bit about the Knicks

8:57

too, okay, trying to figure out the Knicks. The

9:00

Knicks have a good player or

9:02

great team chemistry both.

9:07

Yeah, I mean, do

9:09

they have a great player in Jalen Brunson, Yes,

9:12

they have great chemistry

9:14

because they don't even have a number two guy. I

9:17

mean, Josh Hart's a nice player, he's not a number

9:19

two guy. I mean he's not.

9:22

If we're going, okay, do they have a Jamal

9:24

Murray? And the answer is no, Like

9:27

it feels like each night somebody sort

9:30

of fills that role. But you can't

9:32

go into you know, game one against the Pacers,

9:34

going, you know what, Dante di van

9:37

Jenzo is gonna come up big.

9:39

You don't know that, And I

9:41

think that's Josh Hart. You don't know that.

9:43

But they do fill in the box

9:46

score. They do a lot of different things there.

9:48

So I would say it's really the sum

9:50

of the parts that makes them a great team. But

9:53

Brunson's a great player.

9:55

He is.

9:56

He just doesn't feel, sound

10:00

or look like he's a star player. And

10:04

even in Dallas, you know, I

10:06

kept thinking, why why are you going to let him go?

10:08

Now?

10:09

They get Kyrie? But still if you said

10:11

to Dallas you could still have Kyrie or Jalen

10:13

Brunson, I would want to have Jalen

10:15

Brunson. Kyrie's been

10:17

wonderful this year. Jalen Brunson,

10:20

you know now, granted he wouldn't

10:22

be scoring like this in Dallas because

10:25

Jalen, you know, is a ball dominant

10:27

star in New York, just like Luca is

10:29

in Dallas.

10:30

Yes, Seed, It's funny.

10:31

That's one of those situations where you

10:33

know how we do the like if you took this guy off

10:35

that team and put them on there, would they still be as good?

10:38

I think if you switched Kyrie and Jalen

10:40

Brunson.

10:42

With the Knicks.

10:43

Yeah, if the Knicks, I don't

10:45

think they are where they are are right

10:47

now.

10:48

You don't know, no, I

10:50

mean Bronson Brunson's

10:52

played at a really high level.

10:54

Kyrie is still great, but sharing

10:57

it with Luca, Yeah, yeah,

10:59

which is.

11:00

No, it's not no, it's not yeah.

11:02

I mean maybe similar results, similar stats.

11:05

I don't know.

11:06

I mean, I want to be fair to Kyrie because he,

11:08

of course is the most talented player to ever play the

11:10

game. But Brunson,

11:13

he just knows how to play me, not afraid

11:15

of a big moment either, So he's

11:18

up there on that level.

11:19

Yes, yes, Mar And there's definitely true

11:22

team chemistry because Brunson,

11:24

the Vincenzo, and Josh Hart all play college basketball

11:27

together too, So you can't really just, you

11:29

know, dispute that.

11:31

Also, the fans, they tried their best

11:33

to take over Philadelphia, even

11:35

though the owner of the Sixers helping

11:38

out the first responders getting them

11:40

tickets. And when

11:43

Embiid first came out on the floor, I thought,

11:45

it's a good thing the first responders are in the building,

11:47

because he looked like he needed help, but

11:49

he had the brace on and give him

11:51

credit, you know, and

11:54

then they've got sixty million dollars

11:56

in cap space and they have

11:59

five first round picks

12:02

that are available. So the seventy

12:04

six ers are in pretty good shape.

12:07

Now, the question is who's

12:09

that person you bring in. Tyrese Maxie's a

12:11

free agent, You're gonna pay him. I

12:13

think there's some guys you're gonna let go here.

12:15

Maybe Kyle Lowry comes back as your backup

12:18

point guard, maybe Tobias

12:21

Harris, Siya.

12:24

There'll be a couple of players that probably won't be back.

12:27

Uh Oubray is gonna want to get paid. But if

12:29

you could bring in another player,

12:32

and that's why there's there's been talk of

12:35

can you bring in Paul George? Okay,

12:38

I don't want to stunt the growth of Tyrese Maxi

12:40

because I want Maxi to take that next

12:42

step and be Brunson.

12:44

I want him to be the leader.

12:46

You know, when Bide is a spectacularly

12:48

talented player, he's going to the Hall of Fame. But

12:51

I do think we you almost

12:53

have to see that torch passed and let

12:55

Maxie be the guy who's going to be

12:57

running that team. And maybe that helped

13:00

Embiid, So it's not always

13:02

Hey, you got to put up thirty a night.

13:04

Yes, Mark, do you think decisions can be like a nugget

13:06

situation where they have a joker in a murray

13:08

where you know, Embiid you know, I'm

13:10

not feeling great. Everybody moved to the

13:12

side and have Max you just do his thing like we just saw in the

13:14

first round.

13:16

Yeah, they don't have that depth.

13:17

You know, they're they're you know, Denver's got

13:20

maybe the best starting five. Although

13:22

if you listen to the Phoenix Suns owner

13:25

Matt ishbia He,

13:28

he says, everything's good here. We'll talk about

13:30

that coming up a little bit. You know, you

13:32

get these these owners, and you

13:35

know, when you become an owner, then all of a sudden

13:37

people care what you have to say. You can be a billionaire

13:40

and people in your office may

13:42

care. Now he's speaking for Arizona,

13:45

say eh, everything's good. Hey,

13:49

twenty seven owners

13:51

would trade their rosters. There's some crazy

13:53

thing that he said for our roster, like,

13:55

okay, So the Phoenix

13:58

Suns owner says, everything's okay, Okay,

14:01

Yes, Mark, Deep.

14:02

Don't be crazy to say twenty seven. He said twenty nine.

14:04

Oh, he did twenty nine

14:07

owners would trade their roster for

14:09

the Phoenix Suns. Well, you just got swept.

14:13

Minnesota is not going to change. They're not going to

14:15

trade their roster. Denver's not going to trade their

14:17

roster. Would the Knicks trade their roster?

14:20

I wouldn't.

14:22

I mean, that's just rattling off a

14:24

couple of rosters that you have. Are the Celtics

14:26

going to trade their roster? I mean it's silly

14:28

to say that, but when you're

14:31

a billionaire, you're so used to people going,

14:33

yes, oh that's a great idea.

14:35

Oh yeah, you're so funny. Okay,

14:39

But the reality is sports

14:41

has a way of humbling these guys like

14:44

David Tepper in Carolina.

14:47

Everybody's a billionaire who owns a team

14:49

of the NFL. They don't care, and

14:51

you can't outsmart your way,

14:54

you know, just because they're bully your way.

14:56

Like I'm a billionaire.

14:57

Okay, great, you got a

14:59

crappy did

15:01

you make a mistake quarterback? Now

15:04

there's a lot of things. Mightn't you stop

15:06

throwing drinks on fans when

15:08

you become an owner? You know, that's why

15:10

when these guys lose their team, sell their

15:12

team nobody cares after that.

15:16

And you have these.

15:16

Owners who we do listen to when

15:19

they get in front of the media, they're like, okay,

15:22

all right, here's the owner of the Phoenix Suns.

15:24

All right, good job, Matt, you became

15:26

a billionaire. Now, good

15:29

luck in holding on to that

15:31

roster, putting it together, trying

15:33

to compliment that roster, because I do think

15:35

there are a couple of owners who wouldn't trade

15:37

their roster for your roster. All

15:40

right, Well, take a break. Rick Carlisle, fresh

15:42

off the win last night against Milwaukee,

15:45

he'll join us. Coming up, settle on a poll question,

15:47

play of the day, stat of the day, all

15:49

of that coming up. It's some meat Friday.

Cabs Magic Game six tonight, Clippers

16:54

at the Mavericks Game six as

16:56

well. Milwaukee Bucks sent

16:59

packing by the Prick. Carlinle

17:01

third season as the Pacers head coach,

17:03

joining us on the program. Go

17:06

back a week when you heard that Giannis

17:09

was not going to be able to play, might be limited.

17:11

What adjustments did you make?

17:16

Well, you know, a couple

17:18

of the adjustments had to be with

17:21

any notion that it was then going

17:23

to be an easy task to try to beat these

17:25

guys because they

17:28

have veteran experience, they're a

17:30

proud team, They've got a

17:32

lot of physical toughness, and

17:34

so, you know, it was just it was uncertain,

17:37

you know, I think Giannas's

17:39

injury it happened about eight

17:41

to ten days before serious was going to start.

17:44

Seemed pretty clear that he probably wouldn't play

17:46

the first game, maybe the first two games,

17:48

but there was a lot of just stuff

17:50

lying around.

17:51

It was we just didn't know.

17:53

And then so that was

17:55

something and they were you know, you

17:58

know, the not

18:01

not unpredictably, there was I

18:03

think their team fed the little

18:07

miss in the the information,

18:10

you know, pathways a

18:12

little bit. There was a lot of rumors about

18:14

this, rumors about that, so

18:17

you know, it became in a way, a different

18:20

kind of challenge.

18:21

What's the differences between playoff

18:24

coaching and regular season coaching?

18:28

Well, Dan, the playoffs

18:30

are insanity. I mean it's

18:33

you know, I and I. You

18:35

know, Steve Nash once said this, it's

18:38

the playoffs are so intense and

18:40

so emotional that when

18:42

you win a game in the playoffs, it's

18:46

you get so exuberant, you feel like you're never going to lose

18:48

again, and when you lose a game in the playoffs, you feel

18:50

like you're never gonna win again.

18:51

I mean, it's that it's that

18:53

extreme. And so.

18:57

You know, you can have some big games

18:59

in the in the regular season. This year,

19:01

you know, the n Season Tournament added

19:03

to the intensity level

19:06

a pretty significant amount, you know, back in November

19:08

December.

19:09

But there's nothing like the

19:11

NBA playoffs.

19:13

When you guys get done with your win, you close

19:15

out the bucks, how quickly do you turn on the

19:17

next game?

19:20

Well, I.

19:22

Drove home, which is about twenty

19:24

five minute drive, and then turned

19:26

it on and watched you know, whatever

19:28

was left of the third quarter and the fourth

19:31

and I mean you talk about

19:34

ups and downs, I mean the stuff that was going

19:36

on in that series was it was crazy.

19:38

I mean, you know, Phillies down

19:40

eight with like two minutes

19:42

to go when they tie it, you know last night.

19:44

And then in game five, I mean.

19:47

We go out, we go out for our Game five, which

19:50

was after the next Game

19:52

five. You know, I left the locker

19:54

room in Milwaukee to go out for

19:56

our game, and you

19:58

know, New York was upset with like forty

20:01

five seconds left, and he just said,

20:04

okay, well the nixt.

20:05

One and then you find out after the game.

20:07

They lost it over time, like what.

20:10

But that's that's how that's

20:12

how crazy things can

20:15

be in the playoffs.

20:16

Who does Jalen Brunson remind you of.

20:20

Well, that's a great question.

20:22

He's a he's he's forged

20:25

out a you know, a niche

20:27

in in in the NBA

20:30

and really in league

20:32

history and nick history, which is you

20:35

know, very very very unique.

20:39

You know, there's there's a little bit of Steve

20:42

Nash. I suppose, there's some

20:45

James Harden, There's some.

20:47

You know, I you know, I could go

20:49

on and on.

20:50

I mean, there's some Dame Lillard, there's some, there's

20:53

a lot, there's a lot of different elements. But he's

20:57

he's doing something that is very uniquely

20:59

him. And and you know, I

21:01

know Jalen well because we had him for his

21:03

first couple of years when I was when I was in Dallas.

21:06

He's just he's a

21:08

he's a guy that is as

21:11

extremely strong belief in himself

21:13

and you know, New York has turned

21:16

him loose, you know, to really go

21:20

and just take it, talk to whatever

21:22

extreme he can take it. And so

21:26

it's been amazing to watch. I'm very

21:28

very happy for him, very proud of him and

21:31

very much not looking forward playing coaching

21:34

against him.

21:35

We're talking to Rick Carlisle, the Pacers

21:37

head coach, and then you have Tyre's

21:39

Halliburton. Do you allow him

21:41

the same kind of freedom that the Knicks

21:43

do with Brunson?

21:46

Well, I think it's pretty evident that we do.

21:48

I mean, you know, Tyree's

21:52

runs the team, he calls the plays,

21:56

he has the latitude to

21:58

be as aggressive as he teams

22:01

necessary offensively, And

22:05

I just I'm just a believer

22:08

that if you have if you have special

22:10

players like a Tyresee

22:13

or a Brunson, you

22:16

know, or a Donchis, which I who I

22:18

coached for three years, you know, you you've got

22:20

a rare opportunity to allow

22:23

these guys, you know, to have the keys.

22:26

And when you do that and

22:29

empower them, you know, great things,

22:31

great things can happen.

22:33

What was your reaction or opinion first

22:35

time you saw Luca.

22:38

In person the

22:40

first time I saw him in person, was you

22:44

know he he he

22:46

didn't play in the Summer League.

22:47

We we

22:50

we felt that, you know, since he

22:52

he would get gone through to two euro

22:54

the euro League and one of the other leagues. They have

22:57

like different trophies. It's somewhat

22:59

it's somewhat simp of soccer over there. But

23:02

his season is is the

23:04

last part of his season ended like a couple of

23:06

days before the draft, and

23:08

so we just felt that, you know, having

23:10

him jump into Summer

23:12

League from the draft would have would have been a

23:15

mistake from a physical fatigue standpoint,

23:17

so we held him out. He said on the bench

23:19

during the summer League he wanted, he wanted to play,

23:22

and you know, we just we just said,

23:24

no, this is not the right thing.

23:27

And so the first time

23:29

I saw him play in person

23:31

was.

23:33

In a pickup game that fall

23:35

in twenty eighteen, and he

23:40

he came in and you know, we

23:42

had signed DeAndre Jordan, we had

23:46

you know, Wes Matthews, we had

23:50

who else, Harrison Barnes was on the team. We

23:53

had the makings of a of a of a of

23:55

a pretty good team. And he

23:57

came in and he was He

24:00

played the pickup game like Magic

24:02

Johnson. He passed

24:05

the ever loving crap

24:07

out of it. He was he was

24:09

getting every rebound, he scored some,

24:12

but he was just absolutely controlling the game

24:15

with vision, passing, you

24:18

know, a few shots here and there, and

24:22

you know, I watched this and I said, Jesus, guy's

24:25

this guy's actually a point guard. We

24:27

weren't sure he played point in

24:29

the in his team at Real

24:31

Madrid, but you're just never sure how

24:33

it's all going to translate to the NBA. But you

24:35

know, on day one, it was clear that

24:39

that he was that he was a point guard.

24:41

And so you know, then.

24:42

From there, figuring out how how

24:45

to kind of take that in

24:47

the direction that needed to go was

24:50

was a little challenging because we had Dennis Smith Junior, who

24:52

was a young player, very talented too, so,

24:56

but that was what day one looked like. And then

24:58

once we got into this season, you

25:02

know, you know, Luca

25:04

found out that, you

25:06

know, he.

25:07

Could really score.

25:09

I mean, it's scoring became

25:12

very easy to him in the NBA.

25:16

And you'd have to ask him this, but I think

25:18

I think he probably would say that, you know,

25:20

he just he wasn't. He didn't realize coming in that

25:22

he would would have been able to impact the game scoring

25:25

wise the way he did, and so he

25:27

was.

25:28

He was a super dynamic from from

25:31

day one.

25:31

And obviously you know he's with

25:33

a finalist for for m v P now

25:36

and if it doesn't happen this year,

25:38

It'll it's going to happen soon.

25:40

Who's the best shooter in the building? Which

25:44

building like your your

25:46

practice? How about the city of Indianapolis.

25:49

Who's the best shooter in town?

25:52

Boy, it'd be hard, it'd

25:56

be hard not to say that it's Tyree Celiburton

25:59

right now. Now, if you

26:02

know, if Fridgie Miller was.

26:03

In town, what about Caitlyn Clark.

26:05

It might be a different conversation.

26:07

What's that Caitlin Clark? Is she a factor

26:09

in?

26:11

Oh? She fract chief factors in. This is a trick

26:13

question.

26:13

I knew, I knew you'd hit me with one of these, but

26:17

I I I've gotta I've gotta lean toward

26:20

my team just because you know, these

26:23

these are these are my guys. But uh,

26:26

you know, Caitlin being on the scene is is

26:28

really cool too. And the city

26:31

I think part of part of the buzz

26:34

around our city and our team,

26:37

you know, comes a little bit with the buzz of her

26:40

arriving in town as well.

26:42

Is Bird still in town? Do you see

26:44

him often?

26:47

Uh? From time to time?

26:49

Yeah, he I don't know if he's back in

26:51

Indiana yet. He's eating Florida in the

26:53

winter, and then he'll be back at his ranch and uh

26:56

In uh In in southern Indiana sometime

26:59

soon. But if

27:02

you're asking if he's in the conversation for best

27:04

shooter.

27:05

I think I think that's an obvious Yes, I'm

27:09

sure that he would still think he's the best shooter.

27:11

And I know and I know, I know you're gonna probably

27:13

ask me about the left handed scoring

27:16

thing.

27:16

But you asked me about that one other time.

27:18

So if that was against Portland, right, yeah,

27:21

that was against Portland.

27:22

It was it was it was about left handed jump

27:24

shooting.

27:24

You know, if you're righty, and he'd be you

27:27

know, he would, he'd win

27:29

that contest.

27:30

Okay, imagine if Luca said I'm going to

27:32

take just left handed shots in

27:34

a game. How would you have reacted to that

27:36

if you were his coach, Well.

27:39

Knowing what I know about Luca, I

27:42

would have let him do whatever he felt the

27:44

right, you know, the right.

27:45

Thing at the time.

27:46

Like I can't tell you the amount

27:49

of money I lost to Luca betting

27:52

against him making half court shots in

27:54

practice. I mean, you know, like coach,

27:57

you know, you

27:59

know, you know, I'm not gonna give you I'm not gonna

28:01

give you the amount of money one

28:04

out of one, out of three, one out of three. I was

28:06

like, yeah, no way. And then he makes this first

28:08

or second one like every time. I mean, it was,

28:10

it was. It was absolutely uncanny, and

28:14

you know he just looka

28:17

was one of the was one of those guys that all

28:20

all he can ever see is how

28:22

something is going to happen,

28:25

like and like doubt never never

28:28

seemed to enter his mind at

28:30

all, and therefore, you know, he never thinks about

28:32

missing. And so you

28:35

know a lot of these guys are very unwilling

28:37

to take you know, these end

28:39

of quarter you know, full court heaves,

28:43

and you know it's interesting, Dan, Like

28:46

I was on some committees, you know, over the

28:48

years where you know, we

28:50

talked about this, and you

28:53

know, some people said, well, why

28:56

don't we just come up with a rule where if a guy

28:58

takes a shot at the end of the court or beyond

29:01

half court.

29:02

And it misses, it doesn't count as a field goal attempt.

29:04

You know, then then you won't have all this

29:07

you know, holding on the ball till the red light goes

29:09

on and then flinging it knowing it didn't count,

29:12

and then and then we talked about it, and then

29:14

you know, one of the things I said was, if

29:16

we do that, you're gonna have

29:18

guys getting the ball with seven seconds left

29:20

in the back court, keeping it

29:22

in the back court, keeping it behind

29:25

the line, behind the half court

29:27

line, so that on the

29:29

on the on the chance that it doesn't

29:31

go in, they don't get a they don't get a field.

29:33

Goal at ten.

29:33

Oh.

29:33

So that's all stat related that these

29:35

guys don't want to take these shuts.

29:40

Yeah, and you're really seriously asking that question.

29:43

Well, I'm surprised that. I

29:45

mean, these guys just shoot, That's what I'm

29:47

saying.

29:47

No.

29:47

But but in the case of in

29:49

the case of Luca, in the case of tyres

29:52

I had Darryl Armstrong for one year as

29:54

a player, and Darryl, Darryl took

29:56

it as a personal challenge, and he made two or

29:59

three of them from like sixty

30:01

feet.

30:02

And I'm saying, like, if you, if

30:05

you took, if you eliminated all.

30:06

The you know, full and three

30:09

quarter court heaves that Luca takes

30:11

and Tyreese takes, these

30:14

guys would be shooting him like they're already shooting

30:16

a great percentage from three. I mean it would be like

30:18

exponentially higher. So there's

30:22

a different wiring for for some of these

30:24

guys. And Bert was the same way. Bert

30:26

would shoot it every time. But you

30:28

know, you see a lot of guys at the end of at

30:31

the end of the courts, they hang

30:33

on to it and then you know they hear the buzzer,

30:35

red leg goes on, and then they liked

30:37

that.

30:38

Then they fling it up there.

30:39

It's funny.

30:41

When did carrying get out of control?

30:46

Carrying carrying the ball? I

30:49

mean, we're already past traveling, but like

30:52

I go back to Stockton and Iverson, it

30:54

felt like they were the first guys and

30:57

now everybody carries the basketball.

31:00

Is that I

31:03

love I love this show.

31:04

And you were my mentor at ESPN, which is

31:07

one of the reasons I've had such a great broadcasting

31:09

career. Probably, but

31:12

I'm not into a fifty or sixty thousand

31:14

dollars fine talking about.

31:15

Oh oh okay.

31:19

I know this is a very highly rated show.

31:20

But it's the concept. It's not the reps.

31:23

It's that we've we've allowed

31:25

it in college and high school.

31:30

How about you can be the anti

31:32

carrying Sherman say.

31:34

As if you're one of the ones that's this responsible.

31:37

It bothers me, It bothers

31:39

me.

31:40

Yeah, I don't.

31:41

I don't see it as as as that big

31:43

of that bigger problem. You mean, we

31:45

had to carry call on tyres and game

31:49

five or something like this, and so it.

31:51

Still gets called. I think.

31:52

I think the bigger thing is that players have adjusted

31:55

to it, and I don't think players carry the ball as much

31:57

as they did and perhaps in the

31:59

old days, you know, traveling

32:01

is another is another big challenge, but the league

32:04

has made a point of it.

32:05

I think they've done a better job with it.

32:07

You're not gonna get fined, I

32:10

won't now, But there

32:13

was a chance you were headed down that path. Did

32:16

I ever tell you when I got Steve Kerr fined.

32:20

Accidentally?

32:21

Did you ever tell me? I probably saw

32:23

it on you know, your Instagram stuff comes

32:25

up all the time, so you know I may have

32:27

seen it.

32:28

Yeah.

32:28

He I think I cost him twenty five

32:31

grand. He was the GM of the Suns and

32:33

I I was asking him about

32:36

maybe, hey, you got the mid

32:38

level exemption for Lebron

32:40

and he talked about that, and he

32:43

wasn't allowed to talk about like

32:46

he was joking and the commissioner

32:48

find him twenty five grand.

32:49

So yeah, I mean, you

32:52

know, after the after the Indiana

32:54

Fever got the first pick, you

32:58

know, I got a couple of quests and hey, what

33:00

do you think about Caitlin Clark?

33:02

You know?

33:02

And then I said, well, I gotta

33:05

be careful about what I say because I

33:07

don't want to violate any rules here. But you

33:10

know, I can't get enough of these step back forty footers.

33:12

I mean, this is this is the best

33:14

watching her play, you know. So

33:18

we're obviously looking forward to they

33:20

play pretty soon. Yeah, they

33:22

jump right into this thing. But

33:26

anyway, yeah, I know, I.

33:27

Look, I there

33:30

are certain things you gotta be careful. I know I'm

33:32

bugging about.

33:33

Yeah, I know.

33:35

All right, we'll rest that voice for Monday against

33:37

the Knicks. You're gonna need it in the

33:39

garden.

33:40

Appreciate that. Good to see us always.

33:42

Thank you. Rick.

33:43

That's Rick Carlow, Pacers

33:45

head coach, two time NBA champ. He

33:48

was there with the eighty six Celtics

33:50

and coach of the Mavericks in twenty

33:52

eleven. All right, let me take a break here.

and update the poll results if you can. From

35:13

the first forty five minutes or so,

35:15

well, we decided to put up there. Has Patrick Beverley

35:17

played his last game in the NBA?

35:19

Yes? Or no?

35:20

Right now most people saying no, no,

35:23

they think he's still got some value

35:25

left.

35:25

Okay, I don't know. Should

35:29

he have played his last game

35:31

in the NBA.

35:32

He's already on like a what was it a

35:34

one year, three million dollar deal or something

35:36

like that, which

35:39

is great money, but in NBA terms,

35:41

not necessarily. Once you

35:43

start throwing the ball twice at the fans,

35:45

yeah, and even

35:48

in that moment, not being like, oh damn, I just

35:50

really screwed up. Let me go, be

35:52

really difficult to the media afterwards.

35:56

I don't know.

35:57

I'd like to know what set him off right

36:00

so much that you throw the basketball twice,

36:03

but even still.

36:05

Throwing the basketball at people, whatever was said

36:07

is not going to reflect well.

36:09

We'll talk to Charles Barkley. He'll join

36:11

us coming up in a half hour from now. Let me go back

36:14

to something Rick Carlisle talked about.

36:16

It's the Larry Bird Portland Trailblazers

36:19

game, and Larry said before the game

36:21

he was going to shoot left handed, and

36:24

he did. I don't know

36:26

how he scored you know, twenty some points

36:29

left handed against the Blazers, and

36:31

we just showed a clip of these shots,

36:34

and I was wondering, let's say the

36:38

joker announced that he was going

36:40

to do this. I mean, you got to have somebody

36:42

who's established, because let's

36:44

say Luca said, oh, you know, it's so easy

36:46

to score I'm shooting left handed tonight

36:49

against the Clippers. We

36:51

probably have a problem with that. But

36:54

here's Bird who had had

36:56

you know, three MVPs and one titles,

36:59

and you know, he had established himself. And

37:01

he was like, and I don't

37:03

know if he I don't know who talked to him

37:05

and said, you know, why left handed, unless

37:08

he probably would have been honest and just said,

37:10

look on board, you know, maybe

37:13

a challenge, yeah, Pauli.

37:14

His next opponent after the Trailblazers

37:16

was the Lakers, and the media thought he was joking

37:18

around. He said, he announced he was going to do it. Then

37:20

he said he's saving his right hand for the Lakers, and

37:23

everyone left. Two

37:25

days later he played against the Lakers and

37:27

he played right handed.

37:28

Yeah.

37:30

I think you're right, though, I think it would be a mixed

37:33

bag of reaction even to a guy like that.

37:35

Even if Lebron said this more so April

37:38

would, they would pile on Lebron, like,

37:40

oh god.

37:42

But Jokic just mastered the game. His team is

37:44

doing great. They'll say it was a November thirteenth

37:47

game against Charlotte. I

37:49

think it'd be very mostly positive because

37:51

he can get away with it. He's likable, he's

37:54

awesome. But some people are like, oh,

37:56

you're making a mockery of it.

37:57

Yeah, yeah, but he did.

38:00

He took all of his shots left handed in Portland,

38:02

Yes, Todd.

38:02

I wouldn't like it to find it disrespectful to the

38:04

other team. Imagine if Steph Curry

38:07

after every shot did the shimmy or something like that,

38:09

or someone flipped their bat every time they got

38:11

a hit, whether it's a home run or just a single.

38:13

But he's not being flamboyant when he's doing this. He's

38:17

just doing something different. And most of the

38:19

shots that he's taking required

38:21

shooting left handed.

38:23

Well, no one wants someone to come across thinking

38:25

like this sport or this thing I do for a living is so

38:27

easy. I gotta try, you know, something

38:29

else.

38:29

So they had to do it a different way.

38:31

I don't know we're still talking about it. Yeah,

38:33

Paul, I love legendary moments.

38:35

Sometimes they're off putting in the moment, but

38:38

like if Babe Ruth really called his shot,

38:41

I don't know if he did. But when bo Jackson

38:43

ran up that wall, he didn't have to run up

38:45

the wall after the catch the

38:47

tunnel.

38:48

Yes, when he ran for that touchdown.

38:50

You put a.

38:51

Little extra sauce once in a while because

38:53

you can. Yeah, that's how legends are

38:55

made.

38:55

Yeah huh, Yes,

38:58

Marv.

38:59

That's why you ask every guest about their favorite

39:01

mat Michael Jordan and Larry Bird story,

39:04

because those two guys always had a story

39:06

about trash talking and then backing it up afterwards.

39:08

Everybody had a story about

39:10

Bird, and everybody

39:12

has his story the first time they played against Jordan,

39:15

they do because Bird

39:18

was going to talk trash to you.

39:20

Bird used to do.

39:21

He'd go tweet tweet, take a seat when

39:23

he'd hit a shot on somebody who was young.

39:26

Tweet tweet, take a tweet tweet,

39:28

take a seat. Yeah, fall

39:30

We've had.

39:31

Like six different players tell us they heard Bird

39:33

say, I can't believe you've got.

39:34

To get white white guy on to

39:36

him. I just remember when Dan Marley

39:38

was guarding him, and he looked at Mark

39:41

West, I think, and he didn't even talk

39:43

to Marley. He looked at him and said, I can't

39:45

believe you got a white guy guarding me, and

39:49

Marley didn't even know what was going on, such

39:51

disrespect. Yes, he wouldn't

39:53

talk to Marley. Poor

39:55

Marley's out there running around chasing him.

39:57

And then I can't believe you

40:00

put a what guy whom he should have had a late roll

40:02

back?

40:02

Then, yes, Marmon, Or when

40:04

Tom Tolbert said I've gone Larry Burton,

40:06

I say shot and Larry bursay, Yes, it.

40:08

Is Buddha

40:11

in San Francisco. Good morning Buddha, No

40:15

Noboddy.

40:18

Thanks for calling DP, what's up, Fritzy,

40:21

what's up? Patrick?

40:23

Beverly?

40:23

Dan, Mental Midget?

40:26

And may all playoff series be as entertaining

40:29

as the next sixer series?

40:30

Damn, I mean next don't.

40:31

Even have Julius Randalls.

40:32

Yep.

40:34

But damn this might sound radical, but why

40:37

do I feel like some NBA team is gonna

40:39

draft Bronnie and then they're

40:41

gonna hold him hostage for a trade

40:43

package with the Lakers, and then Lebron's gonna

40:45

have to go Liam Neeson and get his kid

40:48

back.

40:50

Uh.

40:51

I don't think that's happening.

40:53

I hope Bronnie goes and plays

40:55

another year of college basketball.

40:56

I think he needs it.

40:58

He might get drafted, maybe he's

41:01

in a developmental league, the G League,

41:03

but he's just not ready to play.

41:05

I mean he might be.

41:06

Seems like he's a great kid, good

41:08

defender, knows how to

41:10

play, but he just he's

41:13

not ready to play in the NBA. Now, there's

41:15

a lot of players who aren't ready to play. But you're Lebron

41:18

James's son. So you walk in and

41:20

people are going to go, wait,

41:22

which one's Lebron? Soon that

41:24

one really? Charles

41:28

Barkley will join us coming up. Get

41:32

some more phone calls as well.

41:35

When can we get to the point where we can

41:37

compare ant Man

41:40

to Michael Jordan? Are we there

41:42

yet? Charles will join

41:44

us coming up in twenty minutes from now.
