The Jets have made hires offensive coordinator.

0:56

What's that mean? Brandon Weeden will join us this hour.

0:58

We'll get his thoughts on the playoffs

1:01

and all the quarterback stories. Garrett

1:03

Wilson just checked in. We're gonna we're

1:05

gonna one hour about an hour

1:07

away we're gonna have Is that right, j Stew Did I read

1:09

that correctly? Yeah, We've uh, I'm

1:12

naming our second hour today the

1:15

The Dan Buyer Hour of Ohio

1:17

State receivers the

1:20

Dan Buyer Hour, Right,

1:22

the Dan Buyer Hour. Got it? Um?

1:26

Okay, um buyer?

1:29

Oh wait, Jay Stu, I'm I'm reading

1:31

this on my screen here and I

1:33

love it and I want you to kind of

1:35

expound upon it. But

1:37

but first, I guess the story of the day is

1:39

Frank Reich was hired as head coach of the

1:41

Panthers. Right, so Nathaniel Hackett

1:43

often succording to the Jets. Obviously everybody

1:46

thinks, well, there rogers coming. But Frank

1:48

Reich hired? Why did you put down that

1:50

Mike Silver is uh is

1:53

ticked off? See

1:55

now now we're really we're bringing

1:57

the listener behind the curtain. This is an

1:59

inside joke. Um. You know, obviously

2:02

Frank Reich was hired, he's

2:04

white. Um, Steve

2:07

Wilkes wasn't hired and he's not white.

2:09

So my my thing is the countdown

2:12

to Mike Silver's piste off tweet, which

2:14

I'm sure has already happened, the

2:16

meltdown.

2:17

Yeah yeah, uh. Just

2:19

so you know that Frank Raik did play for the Carolina

2:22

Panthers back in Wow,

2:25

that was the when their expansion team. I

2:28

think he was their first quarterback that they signed.

2:31

All right, So the question becomes like

2:33

Frank Reich, who, of course is Um.

2:36

He's as a head coach. As

2:39

a coach, he was a head coach of the

2:41

Colts, but Andrew luck was

2:43

his quarterback. Right then,

2:45

he had h Jacoby Brissette,

2:48

Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Um,

2:51

Matt Ryan, Sam Ellinger, and

2:53

he had he had a laundry list of

2:56

dudes as his as his quarterback.

2:58

Previous to that they won the

3:00

Super Bowl. Remember that was when

3:03

Um when his

3:05

quarterback was also Carson

3:07

Wentz. And then Carson Wentz went down and

3:10

he replaced him with Nick Foles. So

3:12

this leads us to the question, we all believe

3:16

that guy's generally generally,

3:18

it's a general statement. Generally

3:22

they bring in somebody who they've worked with before.

3:25

That happens everywhere I've ever been. We're

3:28

like, man, why they hire that guy? Like, oh, they they're boys,

3:30

they worked together before. But

3:32

I don't think it's Wentz. I

3:35

don't think it's Matt Ryan. Obviously,

3:37

jacober said so maybe as a backup,

3:40

But what does this mean in terms of starter? Does that

3:42

mean they keep Sam Donald? Right,

3:44

you got a quarterback whisper with Sam

3:47

Donald, they do have some investment in him.

3:50

I think what's more likely is they draft

3:52

a quarterback or develop a quarterback, or you know, they

3:54

got the third string quarterback who

3:56

has hurt all year who they may want to develop

3:58

there. What this is,

4:01

It's a really interesting thing that they have with Frank

4:03

Reich where a lot of people like the overall

4:05

talent of the Carolina Panthers and think they're

4:08

not that far away. Can Frank Reich

4:10

be the guy and Frank c Reik be the guy?

4:13

Um? I don't know, I don't know what the what the answer

4:15

to that is. But you

4:18

know they're not bringing in Baker

4:20

after Baker was already there this year

4:22

and got beat out. What

4:25

does it mean he's he's also I mean,

4:27

this is this maybe far Afield. Frank

4:29

Reich is a super devout Christian.

4:32

When I think of somebody who

4:34

is that level of preachy and would

4:37

be a fit, Derek Carr is a guy who

4:40

is who I think

4:42

this past weekend even spoke at at

4:44

a church. But that's the bread

4:46

comes we get on what quarterbacks are going

4:48

where? You know, Carolina

4:51

not a major market player, but in a division

4:53

where you gotta figure if you get the right

4:55

quarterback, you get the right mix,

4:57

you can compete for a championship. Consider

5:00

r Tampa, you won the

5:02

division, but was under five and

5:04

now they've they've cut most of their roster. So

5:08

and then of course we look at the lines

5:10

and the movement there. Pat Mahomes met with

5:12

the media. He seemed to be walking

5:15

fine, and and he's ok,

5:17

he's okay. We saw the new look Lakers

5:20

is Anthony Davis is back, Hutching

5:22

Morris back. And

5:24

then you get the Jets thing. dB,

5:27

what do you think of, um, what

5:30

do you think of of the Frank Reich higher in terms

5:32

of what it means in quarterback

5:34

movement? Yeah, it's really

5:36

interesting. It also makes me think that

5:39

the Panthers feel

5:42

like they are closer

5:44

to winning now than um,

5:49

you know that than maybe a

5:51

a rebuild or try to you

5:54

know, start from scratch. Maybe

5:56

they liked what they you know, had with Sam

5:58

Donald uh over that last

6:00

stretch and feel like, you know, they're

6:03

they're gonna exhaust every single option.

6:06

Um, that's that's what I

6:08

took it as. Um

6:11

that the

6:14

the success that you had with you know,

6:16

Philip Rivers, maybe that can translate

6:18

in this scenario, uh,

6:21

in terms of just being a yeah, I mean,

6:24

like I'm interested in the Sam Donald thing. There

6:26

are signs of I remain the

6:28

last stockholder right where

6:30

I'm like, man, everybody else has sold their stock and I'm

6:32

like still holding on it. Like you know, Gino

6:35

Smith had a great researchence here late in his

6:37

career, later in his career. Maybe

6:41

that's what we'll say. But when you look at all

6:43

the quarterbacks available, you

6:45

know, when you when you look at all the quarterbacks

6:47

available outside

6:49

of Jacoby Brissette, who you'd bring in as a

6:51

backup, none of them really makes

6:54

sense in this one in terms of guys

6:56

he's worked with before. No, And there's there's

6:58

the other factor of Carolina

7:00

picks ninth in the draft

7:04

and and in the

7:06

mock drafts that I see a

7:09

lot there is Carolina

7:11

trading up um in

7:13

in that spot. So maybe that's

7:16

maybe that's their their line of thing. But the

7:18

the Donald thing, um, you

7:21

know, who they have to resign is

7:24

the one that I just I actually

7:26

think that it it makes sense

7:28

for the track record of

7:32

of Frank Reich and heck,

7:34

if you try to squeeze what you can out

7:36

of it, and maybe the you know, the

7:39

the guy that you know the most, and

7:41

you think that Frank Wrych can get that out of them, that

7:43

could be the option. And just of

7:45

what you know Frank Reich has done and what

7:48

is used to maybe they just chose, you know, they chose the

7:50

wrong guys in Indianapolis, UM,

7:52

and maybe Donald won't be the guy in Carolina,

7:55

but that just seems to be, you

7:57

know, along the lines that they're going because

7:59

honest Ei, there the way that they played

8:01

down the stretch, and the defense

8:04

has a bunch of really good pieces. That's why they

8:06

didn't want to trade Brian Burns at the trade deadline.

8:08

You know, d J. Moore stayed on offense, but

8:11

they seem to have more of a physical running

8:13

game with uh with Dante

8:15

Foreman and uh Um Chuba

8:18

Hubbard. So you've got

8:21

you've got pieces there. I think that they liked moving

8:23

forward and now you bring in Frank Wright to make sure

8:25

that your quarterback position is

8:27

is fixed. J what do you think?

8:31

Oh man, I don't know much. I leave this stuff

8:33

to you guys, but I am interested in

8:35

this. UM. I don't know much about what

8:37

how Frank uh, does

8:39

in that market and that with that team. But is

8:43

this where Carson Wentz makes his fourth

8:45

NFL stop? As soon as the Commanders

8:48

do what they do with him, does Reich bring

8:51

him in? Um? Do you see

8:53

him being a panther? Not? Maybe not immediately

8:55

but soon thereafter. And another

8:57

question for you guys, what

9:00

does this mean for Steve Wilkes. Is

9:03

he just gonna go be a defensive coordinator

9:05

somewhere or does he get hired in this cycle? No?

9:09

No, I mean, you know, he he got the

9:11

job in Arizona. He didn't have

9:13

a great roster, a good offensive line, but they it

9:15

was it was bad. And I

9:17

thought he did a reasonably solid job

9:19

with Carolina, but you know, he

9:22

had a two month audition

9:25

and for whatever reason, they chose to bring an offense

9:27

that that could very much just be a circumstance

9:29

of Hey, we've only had defensive guys

9:31

in here. We really got to figure out the

9:34

offense and that's where we go with But

9:36

I think, uh, you know,

9:38

Frank Reich has similar experience, if

9:40

not better. I just don't think sea Wilkes

9:42

becomes a head coach and maybe

9:45

through no fault of his own, but this is a little bit like we

9:47

talked about yesterday, where when you don't bring

9:49

your own guy with you, it's a really sign. It's a good

9:51

sign that that guy can't play.

9:53

When Steeve Wilkes, who came from Carolina

9:56

to Arizona gets the interim job with

9:58

Carolina where he has sweat equity and

10:00

he gets a look but doesn't get the job

10:02

and they finished decently, I think that's

10:04

telling you, you know, whether or not it's it's

10:07

real or imagined, it does seem to tell

10:09

people guys are a great guy, just not a

10:11

head coach, Because a great

10:13

guy just not a head coach. Sam Donald in his final

10:16

UH starts for

10:18

the Panthers had an awful UH

10:20

final week, but in the five

10:23

starts that he had when he ended up taking over

10:25

in November, had a passer raining

10:27

over over one hundred four times.

10:31

So there's enough there

10:33

for the Panthers to be like, all

10:35

right, let's let's maybe figure

10:37

out a way, let's maybe try to bring him, maybe

10:40

try to bring him back. Maybe you don't use

10:42

that first round pick on trading up

10:44

and trying to get a quarterback because there's likely not going

10:46

to be one available where they pick

10:49

at number nine. But he

10:54

hasn't been as he's not. He wasn't the Sam Donald

10:56

that we like to say Sam Donald

10:59

about. Now listen, I've been again,

11:01

you know me buyer, Like I actually really

11:04

like Sam. Don't think he's got I've

11:06

always thought he had, you know, he never

11:08

had a particularly roster, particularly coaching

11:10

for But at some point you can't put the blame

11:12

elsewhere, you know, Or is it Matt

11:14

Carroll? Are they all in on Matt Correll being

11:17

the guy who eventually, after missing this year,

11:19

comes in and take sure of the job. I don't

11:22

know, Um,

11:24

I don't, I don't know. I think that the investment

11:28

in quarterbacks outside

11:31

of the first round is

11:35

I just don't think that you have to make

11:37

a commitment at that point, Like

11:40

there is no guarantee that that player

11:42

gets a shot. And I'm

11:44

alright, like if if somebody else outplays

11:46

them, like there's there's not that, Hey, we

11:49

gotta we gotta get this guy some reps.

11:51

Um I would I would almost even

11:54

say Doug honestly, outside of the first

11:56

fifteen picks in the first round at times, which

11:58

is why I didn't think Jordan's love was the

12:01

necessity. Um, for Green Bay

12:03

of what are you gonna do with Rogers when you have Love?

12:05

Like if you if Love never played,

12:07

that means Rogers was playing that well, and

12:10

so be it. And so I feel the same way with

12:12

about second and third round picks. And if there's enough

12:14

there for Carolina to want

12:17

to bring Donald back, then go right

12:19

ahead. But I don't think that there's you know,

12:22

it would obviously be and I'm not saying that you're not saying

12:24

this, but it would obviously have to be a competition

12:27

for Corral to try to win

12:30

a job because they're just not going to hand it to him. Yeah,

12:32

I don't know what you know? Like that that

12:34

would scream to me that

12:36

that Reich had some sort of knowledge of

12:39

Corral. You know, when you sit down, you gotta

12:41

have like what's your plan at quarterback? You know,

12:43

like, hey, I really like Sam Donald. I think you

12:45

know, it doesn't make a ton of money, and we

12:47

can extend him so he doesn't make a ton of money. And

12:49

if you allizes like Corral, we know we'll work with him.

12:52

It's got to be an overall planned thing. But the one

12:54

thing about Rich is he has seen as kind of a quarterback

12:56

whisper and if they have, if they

12:58

feel like there's something there with Donald

13:01

and he can only grow it, that would make

13:03

sense. Donald still not old, like he's not

13:05

thirty years old and he's like it's

13:09

crazy. So still plenty of juice in that tank.

13:11

If that's what they see. And I'm with you, you

13:13

did see market improvement

13:16

in solid play at the end of the year. It's interesting

13:18

because Caroline is a team that we

13:20

don't talk We don't one of those markets we don't

13:22

talk up a ton about. But here's the division

13:24

which is really down. Previously

13:27

it had been the best division in football, and it

13:30

does feel like that Carolina

13:32

has probably the best overall group

13:34

of talented players that quarterback

13:37

quality, coaching consistently consistency

13:40

away from from making that

13:42

jump, even though they trade away Christian McCaffrey

13:44

mid season. Be sure to catch the live

13:47

edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays

13:49

at three pm Easter noon Pacific

13:51

on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart

13:54

Radio a app Doug

13:58

Otlip Show Fox Sports Radio. Don't

14:01

answer this question, Rab Moster, Jason Stewart,

14:03

Dan Buyer, What song comes, what

14:06

movie comes in your mind when you hear the song Breakfast

14:08

Club. Yeah.

14:12

For for my for my non

14:15

movie love of

14:17

of not liking movies. I

14:19

am a big John John

14:22

Team eighties. Yes,

14:25

you know what, honestly, we're gonna divot what

14:27

we were talking about. We're gonna talk about Johns

14:30

views movies. Um,

14:32

John Hughes a brilliant filmmaker

14:35

and for our kind of childhood

14:37

and teen years right, like we all do we all agree?

14:40

Like? Are we all? I'm not saying anything. Okay,

14:42

So here's here's the movies if you're like, okay,

14:45

I know, Breakfast Covered like that, Paris

14:47

Bueller's Day Off, sixteen Candles,

14:49

Pretty in Pink, Planes, trains at Automobiles,

14:51

Weird Science, Uncle Uncle Buck, Beethoven,

14:55

Home Alone, Um,

14:58

National Lampoon's Vacation in Christmas

15:01

Vacation, which some people consider the in

15:03

my household, that's the goat Christmas movie. Dutch

15:06

is another really good one. Mr

15:09

Mom, He's remember, Mr Mom. It's

15:11

one of my favorite movies. And I tell people

15:13

all the time, I say, uh,

15:15

I think it came out in eighty or eighty one.

15:18

The humor and the themes are still

15:20

extremely relevant and funny.

15:22

You know, there's some ridiculous stuff that that

15:25

you saw in the late seventies, that dates it,

15:27

But the jokes and the humor

15:29

there they still hold up. That's an amazing

15:31

movie. I held a

15:33

grudge against Martin mull for

15:36

a good decade for character. Character,

15:38

Yes, for him in that movie. Uh,

15:41

he did go sci fi a little bit. He had the

15:43

fifth Element, which I really liked. Um.

15:47

But for the most part he made his It

15:49

was some form of either he did the

15:52

he did you know, the two thousands from

15:54

from like mid nineties on

15:58

or maybe even early nineties on, Beethoven

16:00

and Beethoven,

16:03

Second hundred one, Dalmatians,

16:05

the Live One, Flubber

16:09

Um, you

16:11

know, he he did he mid

16:14

nineties on. He went to kind of

16:16

straight family movies. You know. Dutch

16:19

was like his last Chicago

16:21

based John Candy. That was a really good

16:24

one. Oh No, that wasn't Dutch. Wasn't John

16:26

Candy was so what's his name from?

16:29

From Ed O'Neill, from

16:32

What's the Children? With Children?

16:34

Very with children? But man,

16:36

were there's so many good John Hughes movies.

16:40

Um, all right, right, we'll do rank them.

16:43

Give me your top three, no particular order.

16:45

Dan Buyer Um

16:49

Breakfast Club No. Ferris Bueller

16:51

one Breakfast Club to sixteen Candles

16:54

three? Wait,

16:56

what was the second one? Breakfast Club

16:58

too? Yeah, Ferris Buell's number one. Okay,

17:01

what about you there? Wow,

17:04

man, it's tough. Mr Mom's in there.

17:07

I loved Uncle Buck. I

17:09

love plane trains and automobills, So I'm gonna

17:11

just to go. I'm not gonna do any

17:13

brat pack stuff. So uh, top

17:16

to bottom, Mr Mom at one, Uncle

17:18

Buck and then planes, trains, remos,

17:23

I will do brat packers. I was right in my wheelhouse.

17:26

I was a teenager, so I loved all

17:28

those movies. I would say pretty and Pink Uh

17:31

three, Breakfast Come too? And sixteen

17:33

Candles one. Okay,

17:35

this one's hard because the top

17:38

three to me are ceasting

17:40

candles Ferris Pooler's Breakfast Club. But what do I

17:42

do with home alone? What

17:44

do I do with Christmas vacation? What

17:47

do I do with for the first vacation

17:49

with weird science? Planes? Trains?

17:52

Uh? Mr Mom, Dutch Beethoven

17:55

was awesome, so

17:57

I will do um. My sister's

18:00

favorite movie as a kid was Sixteen

18:02

Candles. Last year my girls turned sixteen,

18:04

it was mandatory viewing at my house like

18:07

we're like, hey, you guys aren't doing anything. This

18:09

is what we're watching. And went to dinner and they watched

18:11

sixteen Candles. So sixteen Candles is three.

18:14

Um Home Alone is too,

18:17

and Breakfast Club is one. And

18:19

I'm like, I don't know how I don't

18:21

rank Ferris Bullers because it's so good and

18:24

my kids have watched and loved it. But Breakfast

18:26

Club is in fact iconic and it does.

18:28

This is the point is it does stand

18:31

up on some levels, like it

18:33

does stand up the conglomerate of kids

18:35

from different Saturday school.

18:37

They don't have any more detentions, they don't have any

18:40

more, but outside of that, everything

18:42

else still stands up. I love it. I love it

18:44

so much. I need to make one amendment and then to

18:46

an update and Brandon waiting here, but um

18:49

I I can't go on record and

18:51

not have Vacation in my top three, so I'm gonna

18:53

kick out Uncle Buck. Vacation is one of my favorite

18:55

movies of all time. Vacation or

18:57

or Christmas Vacation. Vacation

19:00

is the better of the two. We've had this discussion. Vacation

19:04

is head and shoulders above the other vacations.

19:06

And then Christmas vacations second in

19:09

my book how good. Well, it's

19:11

interesting because I find chevy Chase to

19:13

be incredibly bitter and not funny.

19:16

Now. But if we you know,

19:18

if you look back between those two and then Fletch

19:20

and even Fletch lives, he's

19:24

the He's the opposite of Brussels sprouts.

19:27

Right, Brussels sprouts as a kid, like if somebody

19:29

was making Brussels sprouts smelled like people

19:31

were breaking wind in the kitchen, and you never you want

19:33

to avoid dinner at all costs. Now

19:36

you know, people chop them up and

19:38

and flash Frymer kicked him in the oven with

19:40

all of the they're on menus and people

19:42

order them as appetizers. Chevy

19:45

Chases the opposite. He used to be as

19:47

desired as anybody to be in a movie and be funny. Now

19:49

he's just not funny, super bitter.

19:54

Um, I bring up the memories because today is the third

19:56

anniversary, right or it is three

19:58

years? How do can we do it? Because

20:00

isn't it four years since Kobe died in

20:02

the helicopter crash? Is it three?

20:05

It's three years? My

20:08

daughter's best friend elis Alta Belli and

20:10

her parents perished in the helicopter crash.

20:12

Tough day, but you know it's one of those. Like you,

20:14

you look back and you think of memories, not not bad

20:16

to have a good John Hughes memory days. Um.

20:19

Brandon Wheaton joins this, of course,

20:22

for a first round draft pick of the Cleveland

20:24

Brown started for three different teams in National Football

20:26

League. By the way, the show is brought to you by Progressive

20:40

Brandon, we've been talking John Hughes movies,

20:42

those kind of you're you're always older

20:45

right when you played in college, but you're not like

20:47

my age. What was the iconic

20:49

movies of your childhood? Oh

20:54

gosh, man, I'm

20:56

I don't even know. I'm trying to think. I

21:00

think teenage years or you know, I'm

21:02

thinking sports wise, I'm thinking like

21:05

major league. I probably shouldn't

21:07

been watching them at the age I was. Shoot,

21:10

man, I don't know. I'll be

21:12

honest, it's embarrassing. Whenever I've

21:14

got buddies of the movie Buffs or whatever.

21:16

They watch a ton of movies. But I've

21:19

got an arcalypsy. Man. Whenever I lay down and it's

21:21

a cold room, and I turned a movie on. I tried

21:23

to watch Made Off last night, and I fell asleep twenty

21:25

minutes in. I just have a hard time staying

21:27

away. But I got that too. I got that to the last

21:29

the last episode of Yellowstone.

21:32

I had to play at eight different times before

21:35

I can watch it, because I put it in before I go to sleep.

21:37

And then I was like out, like man, and

21:40

I was watching on demand and my on demand

21:42

you can't fast forward or rewind or whatever. I'm

21:44

like this, this, this, this, this sucks.

21:47

Brandy we and our guest in the Got Lip Show on

21:49

Fox Sports Radio. Um,

21:51

let's let's go back to last weekend. You're quarterback

21:53

for the Dallas Cowboys. What went wrong

21:56

for Dax from your perspective, you

21:59

know, he just didn't didn't look

22:01

real comfortable. I mean, you know he to

22:04

me, he you know you rewind the week

22:06

prior. I mean, just stood in the pocket,

22:09

you know, delivered throws accurately on time.

22:11

You know, he was trusting what he saw. Um,

22:14

they were able to run the ball pretty effectively. You

22:17

know, they're more physical upfront, and then um,

22:20

you know he just you

22:23

know one that passion up from the four of niners

22:25

is is is pretty good. I mean, are

22:27

we maybe the best in the league. Um,

22:30

but he just he just didn't look didn't look

22:32

comfortable. I mean they you know, I

22:34

think sometimes whenever you

22:37

know you're not you know, moving the ball consistently

22:40

offensively, sometimes you kind of get out of your comfort

22:42

zone start doing some things you don't want to do. You know. It's

22:45

when it's not going great, it's you know,

22:47

you're searching for answers. And just to me, it looked

22:49

like he never really gotten a rhythm. Um.

22:52

You know, it's you know, I think that's why people

22:54

are frustrated with him. And you know he plays

22:56

like he does the week before and everybody's like, wow,

22:58

now that that's about as good as a quarterback

23:01

players you can get. I mean, you

23:03

know, last week against a really good defense, I mean

23:05

the best defense and football. Um,

23:08

you know, if he forced a few, you know, the woman

23:10

got bad. He kind of forced that one and and

23:12

uh, you know, through a couple of

23:14

pretty pretty bad picks. You know, one of them

23:16

being down in their own territory, so turnovers

23:19

which has been kind of as achilles heel, and

23:21

and uh, just just not throwing the ball near his

23:23

accurate accuracy needs to What

23:27

is your assessment of Brock Purdy and how he played?

23:31

And I hate that I didn't

23:33

say this word, but you know, he managed

23:35

it, you know, and he still makes all

23:38

the throws. So I don't I don't consider like a game manager.

23:40

I hate that term because that's the

23:42

quarterback's job. That's Tom Brady's job, that's Aaron

23:44

Rodgers job, that's Patrick mahomes job

23:46

is to manage the game and control it. But uh,

23:49

you know, he's got unbelievable

23:52

talent around him and he knows where to go to football.

23:54

He's he's pretty decisive. He throws the ball relatively

23:56

accurately. Don't have the biggest arm, but he anticipates

23:59

those. Really they did that at Iowa State. I thought

24:01

he was a good quarterback coming out. He just

24:03

doesn't have all the measurables, but um,

24:06

whatever that's worth. But you know, I just

24:08

think he um, he's playing with a lot of

24:10

confidence. He's got a swag about him.

24:13

Um, you know, he just looks

24:15

like he at times, you know, good batter and different.

24:17

Didn't really have a pulse out there, and I think that's a good thing.

24:19

I think he's he's flatlined

24:21

the whole time. He never gets too high, it never gets

24:24

too low. And his demeanor, I think it's pretty

24:26

infectious for those guys around him. And

24:28

and it's pretty averaging. A he's a he's

24:30

a gamer and a competitive dudes. I've

24:32

been impressed he's he's played well.

24:35

And uh, I mean, any quarterback

24:37

in the league would have to have those, you know,

24:39

those weapons around him. He kindles a monster. McCaffrey's

24:41

a beast. Diego Samuel is an

24:44

absolute freak. I mean just he's

24:46

got cats everywhere, good offensive line. So I'm

24:48

happy for man. It's a cool story. And

24:50

and uh, you know, he's he's

24:53

making the most of his opportunity. All right. How do

24:55

they How does this is a different

24:57

animal rights? As much as uh,

24:59

Mike the Parsons is the beast and the Cowboys defense

25:02

is good up front, Eagles

25:04

defense is nasty and they tend to get

25:06

the leads they can pin their ears back. How

25:08

different is the challengers the Eagles defense? Yeah,

25:11

I think you said it right there. I think you gotta start

25:13

fast and and don't fall into a big

25:15

hole where you gotta you know, come out

25:18

and drop back and throw it. I mean, that's if

25:20

you if you allow that defensive line to pin their ears

25:22

back and come after you, it's gonna be it's gonna be a long

25:24

night. And I mean try Williams arguably

25:26

probably is the best left tackling ball. But I mean,

25:29

you know, if you have to do that forty

25:31

times a game, it's just that's hard on anybody. So they

25:33

gotta get out and play fast, start early, started,

25:35

start fast early, um,

25:38

you know, and Shanahan's won the best at

25:40

it. I think you gotta mix in some streams, get

25:42

creative within the screen game just because

25:44

that'll slow that down a little bit. Obviously running the football

25:46

helps. Um, you just have to

25:48

get creative in a bunch of different

25:51

ways. You know. That's protections, you know, make

25:53

in five man protections, mixing seven

25:56

man protections in the same look. Um,

25:59

you know, in order to take shots, sometimes you gotta

26:01

you gotta max protect and that's you know. I

26:03

think they gotta like their you know, matchup,

26:06

specially with kittle you on the inside.

26:08

But yeah, you just you gotta

26:10

start fast established a run

26:12

game. And uh, because again,

26:14

like you just said, I mean, the Eagle has been kind

26:16

of playing with the lead pretty much all year.

26:18

And if you allow that defense to you

26:21

know, get their engines rebbed up and pin

26:24

their earback, man, it's it's gonna be a long night.

26:26

So yeah, it's gonna be a heck of the game. And I I'm

26:28

sure you're gonna ask me who I think is gonna win both games,

26:30

and I still don't know. I think it's gonna

26:32

be. Uh, it's gonna be great

26:34

football on Sunday. No, I mean I listen, I'm

26:36

not sure any of us really know. I mean, that's so much in

26:39

game action. So it strikes

26:41

me that what Jalen is doing with

26:43

Shane Stikeen is, you know Styken is there's

26:45

a lot of designed runs which are really harder.

26:47

Because it's eleven eleven football changes

26:50

up your assignments. Um,

26:52

how do you how do you counteract that? Right when

26:54

you play kind of a traditional defense most of the year

26:57

and now you're playing against a non traditional offense,

27:00

how do you counteract that? If you're the Niners. Yeah,

27:04

I mean, you know, if you ask the defensive

27:06

coach. You's gotta be gap sound and you

27:09

front. You know, linebackers have to pit the gaps.

27:11

You've gotta be gap sound on the defensive line, you

27:13

know, and and you know trust

27:15

what your I see. You know, teams

27:19

never had to worry about that with me and my

27:21

game. But I've been, you know, being around other guys like a de

27:23

Shaw, and I mean you can tell the teams want to play those

27:25

guys a little bit different. Um.

27:28

You know, I think it comes down to tackling

27:31

in space. These defenses that are left

27:34

are all pretty good teams to tackle in space one

27:36

on one, you know, out there on the on the perimeter.

27:39

Um. But I think you gotta pick your spots when you

27:41

want to pressure him because I think if you

27:43

you know, you want to pain your ears back and you want to try

27:46

to you know, run a bunch of pressures,

27:48

yeah that's good. But he also likes to get the ball out

27:50

pretty quick. And then you know they have different

27:52

ways to two kind of I violate

27:55

it, you know that r p O. If we you know, everybody

27:57

everybody knows about it. They like to do a lot of that stuff.

27:59

So I was with Shane Stikeen in Cleveland.

28:02

He's a very innovative mind, very

28:05

you know, he kind of thinks one step ahead,

28:07

and that's why I think he's doing so well. He's got a great quarterback

28:09

and a lot of good weapons, but he's doing a great job.

28:12

Um. But yeah, I think, you know, I think if you're

28:14

the forty Niners, I mean, you

28:16

know Jamiko Ryan's is I mean, I just read

28:18

that he's rdably, They're gonna have a chance. Abo

28:20

Brokers job. He's a he's a great defensive mind.

28:22

He's got great players. I think you honestly,

28:26

if fund them their past Russ are so good with

28:28

the front four. I don't pressure him that much. I'm gonna

28:30

I'm gonna play more zone coverage. I'm not gonna

28:32

play a ton him and I'm gonna mix it in, but

28:34

I'm gonna play his own coverage and force him to you

28:37

know, fourteen fifteen

28:39

played drives. See if he can be patient and

28:41

kind of dink and dunk his way down the field. And that's

28:43

that's kind of what I put whenever I played against the forty

28:45

Niners a handful of times, that's what I remember

28:48

them doing. You know, Robert solo. That was his theory

28:50

is you know this, of course quarterbacks not patient

28:52

enough to to sit in the pocket, check

28:55

it down, you know, throw you

28:57

know, underneath routes and and do that you

28:59

know of the fifteen times down the field.

29:01

And he's probably right. A lot of guys want to

29:03

take shots and let's how you know, sustain

29:06

drive. So, um, that's if

29:08

I'm I do that. I play a bunch of zone

29:10

coverage mixing from zone pressure share and there.

29:13

Um, just don't let him behind you. You know. It's

29:15

it's obviously that uh, you know, Philly's got

29:17

some weapons on the outside. But I just think you gotta force

29:20

the Eagles to uh to sustain

29:22

those long drives and hopefully come away with some field

29:24

goals. Doug gottlip Schell Here on Fox

29:27

Sports Radio, Brandon Wheaton is our guest.

29:29

Brandon pat Mahomes has

29:31

a high ankle sprain. Seemed to be walking

29:33

okay, uh at

29:36

at the podium yesterday when he got off the podium.

29:38

How does that change things If he's got

29:40

I mean, you know you you don't, you didn't

29:42

run around the way he does. But uh,

29:44

he's still I mean, he's not running for first town as much

29:47

as moving the pocket. How does it change things to

29:49

the high ankle spring, Yeah,

29:51

I mean it'll change him, Like you said, in the

29:53

pocket. Uh you know, I had that inner injury

29:55

high ankle spraining against oh you the last game of

29:57

the year my junior year. It was on foot,

30:00

and I think that's the most important thing. You

30:03

know, that's the foot he uses to one move around

30:05

shuffle that puts always working to

30:07

get in the ground and get the ball out to you know, kind

30:09

of his his dry foot, the

30:11

foot he pushes off of. So you

30:14

know, fortunately there's some there's some shots

30:16

he can get to kind of mask that pain. I'm assuming he'll

30:18

get one pre game and one at halftime. Um,

30:21

but it's it's just a nagging injury.

30:23

They suck. I mean, they're just they're not a lot of fun. Um

30:27

out a buddy, just test me that. I'm like, you know, I still

30:29

think him on one leg, you know,

30:31

the other one, Let's say, I

30:33

still think he's better than the majority of guys in the league.

30:35

So I mean he's gonna have to be even more of a true

30:38

pocket passer. You know, he uses mobility

30:40

when he can, but um,

30:43

you know, it'll be It'll interesting to see what their game

30:45

plan is, you know, and and how good he feels,

30:47

because that's he's

30:50

obviously tougher and I am because I you know, I

30:52

didn't have to play the next week, and I remember I remember

30:54

being sore for like two weeks, three weeks

30:56

even, you know, So it's a it's an injury that

30:58

that hangs with you for a while. Um

31:00

and being on that right foot makes it tough. But again,

31:03

I mean, how do you ever question that

31:05

guy? I just, dude, is all he

31:07

does is continue. It seems like he just gets better.

31:10

And every time madd he plays well.

31:12

I mean, he's just he's an absolute monster. And

31:14

and uh so I'd never I

31:16

would never doubt him. I mean, I assume he'll be

31:18

ready and and uh you

31:20

know that chiefs That Chief's offense is it's

31:23

so much fun to watch, man, They're so creative and the

31:25

way they attack defenses is is

31:27

a lot of fun to watch. Brow able

31:30

to perform so well. Oh,

31:34

I think it's just just poise,

31:37

understanding what they do offensively, understanding of

31:39

defense, knowing where to go to football. His accuracy,

31:42

the guy can just he's he's ten point accurate.

31:44

Um, just confidence.

31:47

I mean he's got confidence in the pocket, and he's got confidence

31:49

in the guys around him. He's got confidence in his arm and

31:51

his ability to know to deliver throws. I

31:54

mean, he's Joe cool Man. I mean it's it's a

31:56

great nickname for him because he's, you

31:59

know, a little different game than the homes.

32:01

He's probably faster than the Homes, but he

32:03

doesn't get out and run around as much. Um

32:06

just you know, I

32:08

guess one of those guys that what

32:11

he does you can't teach. I mean, I saw

32:13

Matt Hassebac did a deal on on TV. I think

32:15

it was last week or two weeks ago. He's talking about his

32:18

pocket presence and his ability to have two hands

32:20

on the ball in the pocket and his ability

32:22

to escape pressure with you

32:24

know, maintaining good you know, pocket

32:26

fundamentals, and he's he's probably one of the

32:29

best at it. I mean he's done put the ball

32:31

on the ground in the pocket very very often and doesn't

32:33

throw a ton of picks. He's very smart with the ball.

32:36

So I mean he's a complete quarterback and he's got

32:38

a great receiving corps and a couple

32:40

of you know, really good running backs. So I'm

32:43

a big fan. I love watching the guy play.

32:46

He just makes it look too damn easy. I know

32:48

it's not easy. I've been out there. It's not as easy as he makes

32:50

it look. And and that dude just stands

32:52

in there and never phases him.

32:55

And you can blitch him, you can hit him, you can do whatever. Get

32:58

up and he's gonna sling. It's so he's

33:00

he's a lot of fun. He's he's becoming one of my favorite quarterbacks

33:03

to watch in the league. Brandon Whiten,

33:05

33:07

the Texans, the Cowboys. Be thanks so much

laugh the most. Let's

33:34

get after game time. This

33:39

is game top fire on

33:42

The Doug Gottlieb Show. Damn

33:44

by what he got, My man, Doug, The game today is

33:49

I feel it draped Now. There are certain

33:51

times of the year where we can move

33:53

away from maybe sports I also

33:56

thought maybe we'll do a Kobe inspired

33:58

one, but it is an advance of Championship Weekend.

34:01

I feel like that needs to be our focus with

34:03

these two games on Sunday. So we are drafting

34:05

today the most important players

34:08

in Championship Weekend, and

34:10

Jason Stewart's won the lottery gets the first

34:12

overall pick. John Ramos is second.

34:15

He's tanked with all his previous picks. That's why

34:18

he's here that I will pick fourth,

34:20

two round draft. Jason

34:23

Stewart, you are on the clock. Uh.

34:25

Two things. I hate, predictability

34:28

and laziness, but I'm going to utilize

34:30

both of those. I thought you were talking about the

34:32

topic. Uh, Pat Mahomes.

34:35

Maybe he was all

34:37

right, Mahomes is off the board. Maybe

34:41

there's this passive aggressive way of saying this

34:43

category stinks. No, my

34:46

my picks stinks. It's boring. It is

34:48

the ankle injury is is definitely

34:50

Uh a key storyline.

34:54

John Ramos you are second? Oh boy?

34:56

Um, I think it's between two players. I'm

34:59

gonna we want to trade down, trade

35:05

with you, Doug or with Dan whoever

35:08

I'm offering. You want a trade? Uh? So

35:10

what I get to three and the six. No

35:13

you can. I will do the two for the three,

35:16

okay, okay, and um I

35:20

will also take the seven. So

35:23

you got three picks and I get one.

35:25

No, thanks, okay, Dan

35:30

Um, I'm

35:32

I'm good. Okay, Well, okay,

35:34

I'm gonna take I think Jalen Hurts.

35:36

I think the Philadpi Eagles need

35:38

him to really really play well, and

35:41

so I'm gonna I think Jalen Hurts is

35:43

is the most important player this weekend

35:45

for UH, for his team

35:47

and in general. So good

35:50

pick. I'm gonna go Brock Party my

35:52

next pick. I mean,

35:55

we we have, first of all, the I think the Eagles have

35:57

a really good team, and some of it

35:59

is Jail Hurts, but we

36:01

have no idea how Brock Purties can react in this pressure,

36:04

with that type of defense and getting after him.

36:07

Brock Purties to me is he could

36:09

have gone number one overall. Not that my homes is not important,

36:12

but it's because we just don't have a we

36:14

don't have a book on him. I will, I will,

36:17

I will take Joe Burrow number

36:19

four. My number five

36:21

is actually in

36:23

that same game, and it's in

36:26

that same sequence of possession.

36:28

I'm going Chris Jones, Kansas

36:31

City Chiefs defensive lineman, because if

36:34

if he can wreak havoc on

36:37

the depleted offensive

36:39

line of the Bengals, that

36:42

will give Kansas City another weapon

36:44

and and put pressure on Joe Burrow

36:46

to get the ball out even quicker than he normally

36:48

does. I'm going Chris Jones of the Kansas

36:51

City Chiefs, Chris

36:53

Jones, I like that one. Um,

36:56

Okay, so you've got Joe Burrow Chris Jones,

36:59

all right, mine is very similar to yours.

37:02

Nick Bosa, Nick

37:06

Bosa. Nick Bosa was

37:08

the best player in the Super Bowl up until Pat Mahomes

37:10

made a couple of throws. He could single handedly

37:12

dominate a game. And yeah, like I'm

37:15

I'm gonna agree with who we have. Um,

37:17

we talked to? Who we talked to? Is that Brandon Weed

37:20

said you can talked about only

37:22

not not blitzing anybody, not

37:24

blitzing anybody, just sending for if

37:27

Bosa can get home and they

37:29

can play coverage. Obviously you're probably

37:31

gonna have to spy on Hurts as well, but his speed can

37:33

catch up to hurt. Nick Bosa to me is my second

37:35

pick. Well, jumping off

37:38

what Doug said about Brock Purty.

37:40

Uh, if this guy is gonna be in trouble, it's gonna

37:42

be from the defense

37:44

of the Eagles making him do some crazy stuff.

37:46

So I think Trent Williams, I guess

37:48

that's its blindside offensive lineman,

37:51

somebody if he could keep some of the Eagles off

37:53

pretty or give him some time to throw the ball. Yeah,

37:56

So I think Trent Williams is a very very

37:58

big player this weekend in the Champion your weekend,

38:01

three forty niners in the top seven

38:03

picks. That's what I count. That's

38:06

telling. Um,

38:08

you know what I'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna throw in a curveball

38:11

here, guys, you're gonna throwing a curveball.

38:14

Um Sanders, Miles

38:16

Sanders, Miles Sanders, not the

38:19

other Colonel not not Dion Miles

38:22

Sanders at eight h

38:25

Alright, what about Colonel good

38:29

one? Yeah, that's good. What

38:32

about Colonel the

38:36

last? This

38:41

is game time on the Duck gott Leap

38:43

Show. Alright,

38:46

coming up next, one of the top rookie

38:48

wide receivers in all of football,

38:51

Garrett Wilson's gonna join us. We'll

38:53

ask him his reaction to Nathaniel

38:55

hack It being hired his offensive coordinator,

38:58

and we'll ask him what this season he

39:00

caught passes from four different quarterbacks was like Garrett

39:02

Wilson rookie Jets, next to

39:04

the doug Out the show h
