Welcome to The Doug Peterson Show,

0:06

brought you by Fresh from Florida. JP

0:10

Shadwick and former Jaguar Jeff Logoman

0:12

discuss the latest Jaguars news with

0:14

the head coach. The Doug Peterson

0:17

Show starts right now.

0:19

The Doug Peterson Show presented by Fresh

0:21

from Florida from the Hundai Studios at

0:23

the Miller Electric Center. JP Shadwick,

0:25

Jeff Logoman and Head Coach Doug Peterson

0:28

in studio with US Week sixteen.

0:31

Hey, it's playoff time now, right. Both

0:33

of these teams, the Jaguars and the Buccaneers,

0:35

tied for first in the respective divisions,

0:38

and it's playoff football

0:40

on Christmas.

0:40

Week it is.

0:41

It's playoff, playoff atmosphere,

0:43

playoff football. You know, backs against the wall.

0:45

You got to come out and play your best football. And you

0:48

know, it's one of the things that we haven't done in

0:50

the last say three weeks.

0:52

But you know, we've got

0:54

some things to correct. Guys have been Guys have been focused

0:56

and still doing the right things and looking forward

0:59

to going over to Tampa playing a.

1:00

Game with the with the sky falling, how

1:02

do you maintain that positivity?

1:05

Yeah, that's what it is. Right the sky is falling.

1:07

I mean, the positivity is the fact that we're

1:09

still in first place, we're still fourth in the AFC

1:13

and and everything is still right in front of us. You know, our

1:15

goal when we started the season was to win the AFC

1:18

South and and uh that goal

1:20

has never changed and it hasn't changed.

1:22

And so you know, that's the positivity right

1:24

there.

1:25

And then at the same time, just continue to coach

1:27

our players hard, continue to

1:29

push them. And you know, we

1:31

are getting some guys healthy this time of year,

1:34

which is good. Uh, so you know,

1:36

we need to be making our our move at this

1:38

time.

1:38

Coach, how do you keep a team

1:41

a building from being tight

1:44

in this type of moment when there is pressure

1:46

and and everything going on to perform

1:48

and play at a high level on all levels

1:51

of the organization. How do you keep

1:53

a team from tightening up this way? I

1:55

think, and I truly believe it starts with me. If

1:58

they if I'm tight, then they're gonna be tight. If I'm loose,

2:00

They're going to be loose. And you know, I

2:02

I.

2:03

Believe that they'll they'll feed off of that and to

2:05

kind of feed off of that energy. But at

2:07

the same time, they got to understand that that, you

2:09

know, there's accountability in this business, and

2:11

we got to make sure that we hold each other accountable, myself

2:13

included. And and uh, but at the

2:15

same time, let's go out have fun at practice. When

2:18

it's time to work, it's time to work. Uh,

2:20

let's go enjoy these moments. These are you don't

2:22

get many of these. And and again we're uh,

2:24

we're in the conversation at the end of the year, right

2:26

for postseason and all that, and and that's

2:28

that's what you want. And so that

2:30

that gives you a little juice and motivation. Here,

2:33

you know, this last month, here we.

2:34

Are Thursday afternoon. The big topic is

2:37

the unknown, which is your quarterback and the

2:39

concussion protocol. And I know that you're

2:41

somewhat limited what you can say and

2:43

can't say. What's

2:45

that like dealing with the concussion

2:47

protocol for a starting quarterback.

2:49

Well, it's really not so much as it's

2:52

just any player that goes into the protocol, you

2:54

know, when you're talking

2:56

health right there there, there's stages and steps

2:59

that the player has to go through. Trey Herndon just went

3:01

through it a couple weeks ago and and came

3:03

out came out good, but you got to follow a certain

3:05

regiment and steps and and and

3:07

that you just don't rush him back to the practice field.

3:10

So you know, c J.

3:11

Bethard is obviously getting the bulk of the reps. He's

3:13

done a great job, you know, in Trevor's

3:15

absence this week, and and but yet

3:17

Trevor's still a part.

3:18

Of the meetings.

3:18

He can do the meetings, he can he can be around

3:21

the guys and just whatever he can tolerate.

3:23

And so you know he's trending obviously

3:25

in the right direction. But again,

3:27

you go in just like we did a few weeks ago,

3:30

you know, with with CJ getting getting prepared

3:32

and and and possibly playing in this.

3:34

Game hypothetical here, let's

3:36

say CJ has to play. What does CJ

3:38

do best?

3:40

CJ does a nice job of organizing and let's

3:42

call it managing the offense.

3:44

He knows the system, he knows where to go with the football.

3:47

He he does a good job of utilizing everybody

3:50

that at his disposal. Right, it's it's

3:52

not uh, you know, focusing on Calvin,

3:55

focus in on Evan, which we will use.

3:57

Them, don't get me wrong.

3:58

And we got to use them but but he does a nice

4:00

job of getting the ball into the hands

4:02

of the open guy and manages

4:06

the team that way. He's got an aggressive

4:08

personality. He does have a big

4:10

arm where he can he can push the ball down the field

4:13

if need be. And and he's a good

4:15

leader. Guys really do gravitate to him. He's smart,

4:17

he's calm in the pocket, he's calm in the huddle,

4:20

calm around the football team. And that's what you want

4:22

out of your backup.

4:23

Head coach Doug Peterson with us, this is a

4:25

Buccaneers defense. It has a lot of veteran

4:27

players on it. I mean, guys that have been around

4:29

in that system for a long time.

4:31

So what is it about that group?

4:33

What stands out about the defense this year in Tampa?

4:36

Well, I think you look at him, you know they

4:39

do. But they got a mixture of some youth

4:41

in there too, right, They've drafted some

4:43

young players, you know, particularly up front,

4:46

and and they're all kind of you know, intermixed

4:49

and intertwined in there, and they're playing. They're playing pretty

4:52

good, especially this time of year. And

4:54

and you know, Videvea is a big

4:57

here's another big, physical guy

4:59

in the middle.

4:59

I mean, Fortnite's gonna have his hands.

5:01

Full all day and and we do the best

5:03

we can to help help him, you know, with some double

5:05

teams and combos and things of that nature. You

5:08

know, there's secondary is a veteran group. They're getting

5:10

some guys healthy as well and going to be back. And

5:13

and as you mentioned, they've been around Todd Bowles

5:15

in his system now for a while, whether he's the head

5:17

coach or the decordinator, so they

5:19

they know, they know this scheme

5:21

really well. You know, these two linebackers,

5:24

threely three guys that can they can fly.

5:26

They're big and long on the edge, you

5:29

know. And and so it's another it's

5:32

another.

5:32

Challenge, you know, offensively for our for our guys

5:34

up front, our backs, our tight ends to to compete

5:36

against this group.

5:37

Thank goodness, Vita Vea has to rotate.

5:42

He doesn't play every down. But getting

5:44

back to Todd Bowles, who you mentioned there have been there

5:46

for quite some time as DC and then now the

5:48

head head coach. He runs

5:50

an aggressive defense, doesn't He loves to blitz

5:53

owned dogs, man coverage, blitz

5:55

is that's the challenge. Is that the challenging part

5:57

of his defense.

5:58

It is you know, we haven't seen as many pressures

6:00

lately that we're gonna see Sunday. He's

6:02

playing a lot more man coverage than he has in the past.

6:04

But again, he's got a group that can do it. And

6:07

and I remember when he was with you

6:09

know, Bruce arians and in Arizona, and it

6:12

was almost a blitz fest every every

6:14

snap. And he's kind of brought that mindset

6:16

and that mentality, and he's staying aggressive that way.

6:19

And and and he knows too that his offense

6:21

is playing better and uh, opportunity,

6:23

you know, opportunistic defensively to

6:25

create some takeaways, give the ball back to their offense.

6:28

Baker's playing really well, taking care

6:30

of the football NFC

6:32

Player of the Week you know, last week for his performance

6:34

and and and rightfully so, so you

6:37

know you are you're seeing

6:39

that aggressive mindset out of out of Todd and this defense.

6:42

Vitave is the one guy that we mentioned

6:44

standing out. He's three hundred and fifty pounds, hard to miss

6:47

one's out. Yeah, but Antoine

6:49

Winfield in the back end might

6:51

be one of the best safeties in the league. This is a

6:53

guy that you guys, probably I'm sure are going to say Hey,

6:55

where's he at?

6:57

Exactly?

6:57

This guy he's a ballhawk. He's

6:59

punched the ball out, he's creating takeaways.

7:01

He's a good blitzer, good tackler. He's all over

7:04

the field. He's going to play the post safety.

7:06

He'll be a box safety, he'll be a half field safety.

7:09

You know.

7:10

And they're not afraid to use him, you know, in

7:12

this defensive scheme. So, yeah,

7:15

you got to know where thirty.

7:16

One is and when

7:18

when you have the football.

7:20

And he's he's coming to tackle you, you better, you

7:22

better take care of the football.

7:23

Head coach Doug Peterson with us Baker

7:25

Mayfield last week was the third quarterback

7:28

to deliver a perfect passer rating in

7:30

a game this season in the NFL. So

7:33

where's Baker right now? When you have a guy like

7:35

Evans on the outside and then God

7:37

went underneath, that's a pretty good combination.

7:40

Where are they offensively?

7:41

Yeah, I mean that's just it, you know.

7:42

And Baker does a nice job of getting the ball

7:45

to these guys, and their

7:47

offensive coordinator canal Is, he's he's

7:49

done a nice job of kind of orchestrating

7:51

these guys getting open and you

7:53

know, some of us to play action pass down the field.

7:56

Evans is a big target obviously, and can run.

7:59

Godwin is the quick you know underneath

8:01

guy that put the ball in his hands, he can he can

8:03

take at the distance. So you know, it's

8:07

and Baker's always had an aggressive

8:09

mindset, you know, wherever he's been, and

8:11

and you know I've played and coached against

8:13

him in the past. And big

8:16

arm, you know, powerful arm could push it down

8:18

the field. But at the same time,

8:21

you know, we can also you know, make

8:23

that one mistake and hopefully our guys are prepared

8:26

to to you know, maybe get an interception or at

8:28

least a takeaway.

8:29

The core of their offense seems to run through

8:31

Rashad White, running back,

8:33

slash, you know, throwing the ball. He's

8:36

he's a heck of a football player. The focus

8:38

has got to be on him. I would imagine if you're a

8:40

part of that defense, your defense.

8:42

One hundred, you know, and we've always prided

8:45

ourselves each week, you know, and stopping

8:47

the run and try to minimize it, you

8:49

know, minimize or at least eliminate explosives.

8:52

You know, we got to get better in a couple of those areas

8:54

there. And and you know, again

8:57

when he's rolling for a quarterback.

8:59

When you run game and screen game

9:01

and some of that stuff is going, it just helps you as

9:03

a quarterback.

9:03

And Baker obviously.

9:05

Is is using these guys

9:08

you know, to his advantage.

9:10

And he's another one you got to account for.

9:12

Are you getting healthier on defense? You know, you've

9:14

been a few games without a number of guys,

9:16

Cisco, Tyson, Campbell.

9:18

Chance to get them back? Maybe this week.

9:20

We are good time to start getting

9:22

some guys back, you know, Tyson and Cisco

9:24

of practice this week and you know, done

9:27

a nice job. We're going to continue to push them, you know,

9:29

these next few days leading up to this football game.

9:31

And and you know, the biggest thing really

9:33

I think with you know, Cisco has played recently,

9:36

obviously, Tyson's been the one that's missed

9:38

some time. So just getting him back out there and kind

9:40

of getting his sea legs and back under

9:42

him a little bit. We'll take a little bit of time, but

9:45

but it'll be good to get you know, number thirty two

9:47

back on the field, all right.

9:48

Coach final thought here and asking Travis,

9:51

etc. And Junior in the locker room yesterday just about

9:53

the big picture and playing better down

9:55

the stretch, and he said, basically,

9:57

we just don't need to talk about it. We

10:00

got to be about it as a team. The playoff

10:02

football's here now. Big game on the road

10:04

this week, home next week, and then finishing Tennessee

10:08

three games in a row. Haven't been able to finish the

10:10

job in a game, and the guys in the locker room

10:13

feel that. But at some point

10:15

you got to go be about it. I thought that was a good comment.

10:17

It's a great comment, and I'm glad the guys are seeing

10:20

it that way, you know, and really feel it and understand

10:22

it, because that's that's where we you know, that's

10:26

where we need to be as a team. And again,

10:28

it's not about putting pressure on yourselves or panicking

10:30

or nothing like that. It's it's about going out and just doing

10:32

your job and being about it right

10:35

and and taking care of the football,

10:38

you know, stopping the run on defense, you

10:40

know, creating some takeaways on defense,

10:43

you know, scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

10:45

All those types of things.

10:46

I mean, those are things in our control

10:49

and we just got to get back to doing that.

10:51

Playing clean football.

10:52

Exact clean, complimentary football.

10:55

Coach.

10:55

Thanks for the time is always good luck to you, Thank you, plenty

10:58

more ahead. This is the Doug Peterson's on

11:00

the Jaguars Radio Network.

11:17

Welcome Back. The Doug Peterson

11:20

Show continues right now.

11:22

Welcome back, JP, Shadwick, Jeff Logman

11:24

in the Hyundai studios of the Miller Electric

11:27

Center. The Doug Peterson Show presented by Fresh

11:29

from Florida Food tastes better when it's grown

11:31

closer to home thanks

11:33

to head coach Doug Peterson joining us in the opening

11:36

segment each and every week and big

11:38

week this week the Jaguars and the Buccaneers

11:41

and interesting thoughts

11:43

from the head coach on you

11:45

know, trying to avoid tightness

11:47

in a locker room in a building this time

11:49

of year when things aren't going so well

11:52

three weeks in a row. The division race is

11:54

as tight as it can be. And what

11:56

was his answer? It said, basically, you know, if I'm

11:58

calm, they'll be cool. That's how

12:01

Doug kind of rolls. Well, he's

12:03

dead on the money, you know, and the coach

12:05

is the one that gives the marching orders,

12:08

that gives the vibe to the team.

12:10

And if you had asked, I think

12:13

most fans or Doug

12:15

said, hey, look, you know, how would you like to be at

12:19

the latter part of this season

12:21

first place in your division, with the

12:23

division completely in your control, with three

12:26

games to go, would you take that?

12:29

Yeah, I think a lot of people would. I mean, but you

12:31

know, when you lose three games, there's a tendency

12:33

to think that things are bad and they're

12:36

not going to get better. But hopefully

12:38

this team, and I believe that they can will

12:40

get better this week with whatever

12:43

quarterback that they can play with. And

12:45

I think CJ is more than capable.

12:47

And this Tampa Bay football team has

12:49

been on a roll, but they

12:52

haven't really beat a top

12:54

team. I mean, if you look at who they've been

12:57

beating, Atlanta, Carolina

12:59

and Green Bay on a three game winning streak, where's

13:02

the superpower in that three Yeah?

13:05

I mean green Bay was playing better or

13:08

not like top of the NFC or anything.

13:11

No, you go back and you look at who they San

13:13

Francisco they lost, Indianapolis,

13:15

Okay, Gardner minshew, they lost. Uh,

13:18

they beat Tennessee, which no surprise

13:21

with Tennessee lost to the Texans, lost

13:23

to the Bills, lost to the Atlanta Falcons

13:25

because they play them obviously twice in their division,

13:29

and uh, you know,

13:31

so Detroit Lions, they lost to them,

13:33

they beat the Saints, they lost at the Philadelphia

13:36

Eagles. I mean it's they haven't

13:38

beat some high quality teams.

13:40

So I think the Jaguars

13:42

is gonna win this one. I'm not trying to

13:44

lock at double lock at a triple locker, and I'm not

13:46

gonna pull a JP shattericks. I believe

13:49

that they will win this game. Yeah, I'm out

13:51

of the lock business, as you should

13:53

be. Yeah, I deserve to be. Yeah, I'm

13:55

not either way,

13:58

I'm good with that. Fine,

14:01

be out of that business. I'm so far out

14:03

of that. By the way, did you go into my closet

14:05

and steal my shirt? What's

14:08

the deal? No, mine's smaller

14:10

than yours.

14:12

No, it's not. We

14:14

are we are aware of the same shirt.

14:16

I didn't realize that. How about I just figured

14:18

that out? I mean, seriously, did you go take

14:20

the other shirt that I had? No?

14:22

I had no idea where you live. Why would I do

14:24

that? I have no idea.

14:25

But it's a great mind stick, I guess.

14:27

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it's a nice shirt.

14:30

Thanks a lot.

14:30

Yours is nice. So

14:35

obviously, the quarterback is number one priority this week.

14:37

Concussion protocol and the head coach

14:40

you know, just can't really you know,

14:42

divulge a bunch of the detail about

14:44

that. But tomorrow is a big

14:46

day. I mean, Trevor's out there in any capacity,

14:48

that's a good sign, right, Well,

14:51

I mean yes, but it

14:54

still makes me nervous. Look, I still I

14:56

feel confident that this team can win

14:58

regardless of who is playing quarterbacks.

15:01

I think whether it's CJ or Trevor, that

15:03

they will play well against

15:05

Tampa. But it just makes

15:07

me nervous that if okay, let's

15:09

say Trevor is

15:12

cleared and he's going to play, he

15:14

won't have had a lot of practice this week,

15:17

and then will we not

15:20

every time he gets hit be worried

15:22

about him. Well yeah,

15:24

and the long term.

15:26

I think I do that anyway, But yeah.

15:29

Right, but I mean I think you would be more

15:31

worried about it this week, I think than at any

15:33

other time. So

15:36

so yeah, it's going to be a little nerve wracking

15:38

to find out exactly what's going to happen.

15:40

But again, if CJ

15:42

plays, I've got confidence in him. If

15:45

Trevor plays, I have confidence in him.

15:47

But I'm gonna be nervous and I

15:50

want him to protect the ball.

15:53

Look, this football team this past game did

15:55

not do did not do

15:57

some simple things that they need to do. Protect

15:59

the ball, eliminate penalties.

16:02

They didn't check the boxes in those two categories.

16:05

Make some field goals. They missed in that category

16:07

at the end of the half. The mismanagement

16:10

of that situation was costly to

16:12

where they got zero points with a first

16:14

down situation at the five yard line. You got

16:16

to get points in that situation. Can't

16:18

throw completion in bound to get tackled when you

16:21

don't have a time out. And however you

16:23

want to say it, they should they have clocked it, should

16:25

they have thrown to a different person. Both,

16:28

okay, if however you look at it. But they've

16:31

got to get points out of that. And I

16:33

think that in this

16:35

game against Tampa and with the

16:37

way you're playing, points are at a premium.

16:39

You've got to make sure that you're

16:41

not hurting yourself in this ball game

16:43

against Tampa Bay. Well, back

16:46

in a moment, we'll figure out how a plan to

16:48

defend Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans

16:50

for this Tampa Bay as not an easy plan

16:52

to put together. You've got just a few minutes to figure

16:54

it out. Yeah, how about that? Yeah,

16:57

a little later, about fifteen minutes or so, we'll

16:59

hear from Rovin Ridley in the locker room yesterday

17:01

during his media availability

17:04

time and see what he has

17:06

to say.

17:43

J P. Shadwick, Jeff Logoman.

17:45

Or thanks to head Coach Doug Peterson in

17:47

the opening segment each and every Thursday,

17:49

and this week it's Week sixteen. The Jaguars

17:52

and the Buccaneers coming up Raymond James Stadium,

17:54

Tampa. Battle of teams

17:56

that are tied for first place in their respective

17:59

divisions, the number fourth seed in each

18:01

conference. Currently, the Jaguars

18:03

and the Bucks should be a good one and Baker

18:05

Mayfield playing good football, the quarterback

18:08

for the Buccanteers coming off a perfect passer rating

18:10

last week, former

18:12

number one overall pick of the Cleveland Browns

18:15

back in twenty eighteen, and it's amazing

18:17

a first overall pick of the draft has already

18:20

bounced around like he has.

18:22

You know, Cleveland, Carolina,

18:24

the Rams, and now Tampa.

18:27

It's just not very common that you see a first

18:29

overall pick in that

18:31

amount of time have that many stops.

18:34

Yeah, this one, you know,

18:36

maybe this one sticks a little bit.

18:37

I don't know, it might.

18:38

Look he's having a good year. I mean, he's

18:41

having a very good year. He's Look,

18:43

they may have win a division title, which

18:45

would be three years in a row, I mean two years

18:47

with Tom Brady and then all of a sudden, replacing Tom

18:50

Brady has no easy task. You think, that's

18:52

like the last guy you would ever want to follow

18:55

up, Right, There's

18:57

only been two places you can do that though. I mean, you

18:59

know, think about what happened in New

19:01

England. Think about that situation.

19:06

Good luck.

19:06

Yeah, that's not that's not a great situation

19:09

to follow him. And

19:11

he's arguably the greatest

19:13

quarterback of all time in my opinion,

19:15

he is. I mean, some other people would argue

19:18

that other quarterbacks were greater, Peyton

19:21

Manning, you know, Joe Montana,

19:23

whatever your opinion is, I mean, he's certainly

19:25

amongst the greatest. And you don't ever

19:27

want to follow greatness. You know. The only guy that ever

19:29

really did it, if you think about it, was

19:32

Steve Young. Yeah, and

19:34

Steve Young followed greatness with his own

19:36

greatness, which is amazing.

19:39

And Steve Young was so different

19:42

than Joe Montana. Joe different

19:44

style, a very different style

19:46

left.

19:46

Handed, that was part of the style.

19:48

But the mobility of

19:50

Steve Young was just impeccable.

19:52

But he kept that offense just rolling

19:55

straight ahead. So

19:58

has some really good players. Was good to say.

20:00

It wasn't just that I'll go back

20:03

because their glory days

20:05

was kind of the beginning of my career as a player

20:07

in the National Football League. And they had

20:11

let's not forget on the opposite side of

20:13

Jerry Rice John Taylor, they

20:15

had Tom Rathman,

20:18

Oh Gosh Craig Roger Craig

20:21

who was he ran with such

20:23

high knees uh and

20:25

ran angry the

20:28

tight end. Gosh

20:31

had the famous catch uh

20:34

russ uh Gosh, I'm john

20:36

a blank on his name, and then

20:38

on defense they had that

20:42

Haley for a while, they had Doleman,

20:44

some of the guys left over from other teams, and

20:46

then Stubble fielding young on the inside.

20:49

I mean they just Ronnie Lot. I

20:51

mean, they had guys that were just fantastic,

20:54

fantastic. I mean, who is the GM

20:57

of that team? Who is the personnel

20:59

guy?

21:00

It's a great I don't yeah, I don't know.

21:01

I was a little young, because you know, when you think about

21:03

the forty nine Ers, who gets all the credit

21:06

it's Bill Walsh. But

21:08

who assembled that talent for

21:11

the forty nine ers in their heyday? It's

21:13

a great question because they I mean,

21:17

right now, I'm trying to think of it. It's a perfect example

21:19

of why the guy hasn't got enough credit because I can't put

21:21

a name on it. I

21:24

mean, is it not one of the greatest collections of talent

21:28

in the history of the National Football League.

21:30

You go back and you say that the Pittsburgh

21:32

Steelers, but their

21:34

ability to collect talent back in the seventies,

21:37

it's just incredible. And

21:40

nowadays, I mean, who assembles

21:42

talent to that level now it's

21:44

hard. Yeah, So Bill Walsh was

21:47

the actual GM in the late

21:49

seventies into the early eighties, and then John

21:51

McVeigh took over in eighty three, which is Sean

21:53

mcvay's dad. Yeah, so there go, and

21:55

he was there through nineteen ninety apparently. All

21:57

right, so they have it interesting. All

22:00

right, We've got plenty to get to. We're back

22:02

in a moment. Jaguars offense. Communication

22:05

was the big word last week. I think it

22:07

still applies this week. Well,

22:10

it always applies every week, and

22:13

I think that that word was used

22:16

maybe a little bit too much on

22:18

the offensive side of them all. It

22:21

definitely applies to some of the mistakes

22:23

that the defense made, particularly against

22:25

Cleveland. At Cleveland because

22:27

of those three explosive plays. Okay,

22:31

there were definitely some communication issues

22:34

all on them. Okay, with the linebackers

22:36

and then also the defensive backs of communication

22:38

on the one to bell. All Right, we're back in a moment. We'll

22:40

figure out the offensive side after this. It's

22:42

The Doug Peterson Show on the Jaguars Radio

22:45

Network. The

22:57

Doug Peterson Show, presented by Fresh from

23:00

Florida. Food Tastes Better when It's grown

23:02

Closer to Home, JP Shadwick, Jeff Flagman.

23:04

Glad you're with us on this Thursday

23:06

ahead of the Jaguars and the Buccaneers

23:09

Week sixteen, or thanks to head coach Doug Peterson.

23:11

In the opening segment each and every week. Coming

23:14

up next, we'll hear from Calvin Ridley

23:16

in the locker room this week and

23:18

hear a portion of his conversation

23:20

with the media that he has every

23:23

Wednesday. And you

23:25

know, we're talking about these

23:28

receivers this week, and two of the

23:30

top three are injured right

23:32

now. I mean Christian Kirk still in the list

23:34

on the injured list, so a little bit

23:36

longer for him. And then Zay Jones is

23:39

not practiced this week coming off a hamstring

23:42

injury. So Calvin Ridley step

23:44

right up. I mean, this is it's

23:46

he's kind of the old man in the wide

23:48

receiver room right now. Well, I

23:51

consider Evan Ingram a wide receiver

23:54

even though he's listed as a tight

23:56

ad. If you look at how

23:58

defenses play him match up

24:00

against him, they match up against him like he's

24:02

a wide receiver. They

24:04

don't put linebackers on him,

24:06

they play him with defensive backs.

24:10

And could that role change

24:12

a little bit this week, you know now

24:15

that you get Britain strange

24:17

back, maybe,

24:20

but I really believe that Evan Ingram needs

24:22

to become like he was a couple

24:24

of weeks ago, for two weeks in a row. He's got to become

24:26

a big part of this offense, a

24:29

really big part of this offense. This week, I'm

24:31

talking, you know, twelve targets,

24:34

somewhere in the range of nine or ten catches,

24:37

and that's been about what his percentage

24:39

has been recently. But I want to see

24:41

more of an impact from a yardage standpoint with

24:43

him, and I hope the coaches

24:45

can get a little creative on how they

24:47

get him the ball with more yards

24:49

per catch. All right, that's all

24:52

fine, But considering

24:54

the quarterback situation right now, I don't care

24:56

who the quarterback is.

24:57

I still think you need to still get that

24:59

even with Bethrott.

25:00

Yes, I still think you can get that with

25:03

even with bethret In and looking and the Bucks

25:05

have been without Devin White. There are other starting

25:08

inside linebacker for the last three games. And

25:10

there's a little bit of a I

25:12

think a little bit of a rub there between the head

25:14

coach and him now about you know, is he hurt

25:16

or is he not well? Remember the off season

25:19

they wouldn't negotiate a new

25:21

contract, so he got all

25:23

hot about that, and then it was

25:25

a first round pick in nineteen and so looking

25:28

at the contract year, yeah, this is the contract

25:31

year for him. So still no new contract in

25:33

hand, and him and Todd

25:35

Bowles have not been very happy. It's

25:38

not exactly a kumbay Al moment for

25:40

them in this year's season. But

25:43

I believe that Evan if

25:46

he if you put him in against those

25:48

linebackers, if they try to put the linebackers

25:51

on him, I think he can he can do some serious

25:53

damage. Now, Antoine Winfield,

25:55

one of the best safeties in the league, is back there too.

25:57

Could they could they try to put Winfield against

26:00

him? If so, that's a marquee matchup.

26:02

That's like, literally, I can't wait to see that

26:05

match up. That's one of those things where after

26:07

the game you want to watch the film to watch a

26:09

premium matchup because that's a premium

26:11

matchup in the National Football League

26:13

this week. I mean, and would that be

26:16

not an advantage for the Jaguars over all? The way

26:18

Winfield plays everywhere

26:20

on defense, if you want him one on one

26:22

with a tight end down the field, it's probably just hate get

26:24

him out of the here, get him out of the box altogether.

26:26

Right, Well, you could if he's going to try

26:28

to cover Evan because he's sacking guys. He's

26:30

got quarterback hits, he's got forced fumbles,

26:33

he's got passes. It's like, come

26:35

on, just run him down the field. Maybe.

26:37

Maybe, but that's the one part

26:40

of that I want to see Evan do

26:42

more of. We see Evan always

26:44

on those little what I call

26:46

stick routes, you know where he's five six

26:49

yards down the field, turning around, you

26:51

know, catching the ball at seven. I

26:53

mean, when's the last time we saw him running

26:55

down the seam and has like the one that Luke

26:57

Farrell had. Luke Farrell had

27:00

that one catch for twenty eight yards. I'd

27:02

love to see Evan end up getting some of

27:04

them, and he would help the offense in a big way, especially

27:07

with the absence of Zay. But

27:09

here's the other guy who's got to step up. Elijah

27:12

Cooks. Okay, the rookie who

27:15

has had a roster spot the entire year,

27:17

undrafted guy from San Jose State. Okay,

27:20

how many targets does he have? Elijah

27:24

Cooks for the Jacksonville

27:26

Jaguars of the twenty twenty three

27:28

campaigns so far, Elijah

27:31

Cooks has a total of

27:35

one one target.

27:37

Yeah, it was last week he dropped it.

27:39

One target. I mean, you

27:42

got a roster spot, okay, and this is

27:44

week what sixteen? Okay?

27:47

What did Doug say about this point of the season.

27:49

Are you a rookie or.

27:50

You not a rookie?

27:51

Year?

27:51

You're not a rookie?

27:52

Okay, it's Christmas Rooks. Let's go okay,

27:55

let's go. Got He's got. He

27:57

was like the highest rated wide

28:00

receiver coming out of the preseason

28:02

according to PFF, which

28:05

many people say PFF doesn't mean anything,

28:08

it's preseason. You love those guys,

28:10

then I think there's some substance

28:12

to what they have the

28:14

preseason ratings. Maybe

28:17

not so much, but I

28:19

want to see him do something. If you've

28:21

got a roster spot and now here's an opportunity

28:23

with the injuries that have happened, now

28:26

it's time for you to be big boy, okay

28:28

and be a pro and make

28:31

some plays when given the opportunity.

28:33

And I hope he gets the opportunity. And

28:35

one thing that he has that a lot of the other receivers

28:38

don't is that size and

28:40

that that catch radius, and

28:42

he did a really good job in the preseason of catching

28:45

the contested balls, so I hope he gets an opportunity

28:47

this week. We'll

28:49

come back in a moment and here from Calvin Ridley,

28:52

Jaguars wide receiver, in the locker room

28:54

yesterday ahead of this Jaguars

28:57

Buccaneers matchup.

28:58

And this is the Doug Show on

29:00

Jaguars Radio.

29:09

Listen show presented by Fresh from

29:12

Florida continues. Food tastes

29:14

better when it's grown closer to home, JP, Shadwick,

29:16

Jeff Logman.

29:17

Back in just a few moments.

29:18

Calvin Ridley in the

29:20

locker room this week and coming

29:23

off back to back outings where he's had twenty

29:25

five combined targets the last two games,

29:27

nine catches for one

29:29

hundred and no No ninety two yards in

29:32

that time frame. Last touchdown was at

29:34

Houston back on

29:36

Thanksgiving weekend and he has

29:39

five touchdowns for the season. Trying

29:41

to get on track now with the final three games

29:43

to go and with the other two primary

29:46

options at wide receiver injured

29:49

at the moment, Calvin Ridley trying

29:51

to take a step up. He was in the locker room yesterday

29:53

and always speaks with the media on Wednesday.

29:55

This is from the media

29:57

portion where the scrum is around him

30:00

getting some thoughts from Calvin about going

30:02

into week sixteen, and it is

30:04

a tight division race all of a sudden,

30:07

Yeah, it's pretty tight.

30:09

We did we didn't make it too easy for ourselves right

30:11

now, but there

30:13

shouldn't be no pressure. Just try to get back

30:15

to what we were doing before we lost those three and

30:18

get on the right foot and take it from there,

30:20

get into the to the race.

30:22

This is not the first week where we've

30:24

had backup quarterbacks out there taking

30:26

the first team reps. So how has it been this week

30:28

with CJ?

30:29

It's been good.

30:30

I mean, obviously we've been in this situation before.

30:32

CJ does a great job. He knows

30:34

all the plays just as good as Trevor. You

30:38

know, we take it one day at a time and whenever,

30:41

you know, we know what's going on, really

30:43

we're gonna be ready. So we just

30:45

take it in my practice at the time, we had a good day to day and

30:47

it's we've been moving forward to tomorrow.

30:50

You know, some more changes last weeks.

30:51

Ay comes out with an injury and here's Jamal

30:53

back in the lineup. So I mean that what

30:56

does that do to the wide receiver room when you got

30:58

some some moving parts this late.

31:00

Yeah, you know this far in, it's

31:02

hard to keep your you know, stulf up. But we

31:04

got a lot of young guys in our room who are hungry

31:07

and they're ready to play. And they've been with us all

31:09

year in camp and we know they can

31:11

play, and you know they can step up. So you know, like

31:14

says next man up mentality, if

31:16

they can't go or whoever, I

31:19

know our young guys will be ready and ready to make

31:21

some plays.

31:21

Stadium is one thing, But what about the defense

31:24

on the field between the lines and Tampa?

31:26

Yeah, pretty good defense. Uh

31:29

they want to Super Bowl with that defense, I think, right,

31:32

yeah, something like that. Yeah,

31:35

good good defense. I just you know, good

31:38

everything.

31:38

I just want to keep it good.

31:40

Does It doesn't seem to matter to you who's

31:42

across on the other side, right Nah.

31:44

I just want to be respectful, you know, respect

31:47

each team that we're going against, really good team for

31:49

real, good corners, good d

31:51

line, good linebackers, good

31:54

safeties, pretty much just a good core.

31:56

And but I got a lot of.

31:57

Respect for us, and you know, and I know what we

32:00

should do and what we can do so, Like

32:02

I said, a good team, but we need

32:04

to you know, we got

32:05

to.

32:08

I want to respect them, you know what I'm saying. That's fair.

32:10

And last one for me, I mean, there's a been a lot

32:12

of talk about the focus and

32:14

the details, you know, pre snap penalties,

32:17

a lot of things going on.

32:18

How has that felt so far?

32:20

I mean it's one day on the field, but how

32:22

do you guys clean that up down the stretch?

32:25

Communication?

32:26

You just you know, you start in the meetings

32:28

by telling each other that we got to communicate better.

32:30

We got to make sure before we leave the huddle that everyone's

32:32

on the same page. So you know, when we and our walkthroughs

32:35

and you know, when we're going through our plays, we're just you

32:37

know, overly communicating with each other just you

32:39

know, reminded each other that you know, it's on this snap.

32:42

You know this is the play.

32:43

You know this is you know, this is what's going on in the

32:45

in the game. So you know, there's a lot of moving parts

32:48

and you can you can easily forget like you

32:50

know, it seems like it's easy

32:52

to just run to the line and snap the ball. But

32:54

we got a lot of thinking, a lot of looking around

32:57

and you can easily forget you know what the account

32:59

is. So you know, I mean, obviously

33:01

we're professionals and we gotta be perfect,

33:03

but you know, we're working on it, and

33:05

that's how you do it.

33:09

That is Calvin Ridley, the Jaguars

33:12

wide receiver in the locker room yesterday,

33:14

one hundred and nine targets for the year, same amount

33:16

of targets as Evan Ingram, by the way, and

33:18

Ingram with eighty eight catches, Calvin with

33:21

sixty catches on the year and Ridley

33:24

with just a few more yards than Evan Ingram

33:26

seven to eighty one for Ridley seven twenty

33:28

nine for the tight end Evan Ingram

33:31

on the season. The last three times

33:33

out though, for Ridley thirty three targets,

33:35

thirteen catches in one hundred

33:37

and eighteen yards, and it could

33:40

be his wide receiver room

33:42

at least as a fifth year

33:44

player for the foreseeable future

33:46

and down the stretches these big important games, the Jags

33:48

need Ridley to get back on track for

33:50

sure. Fresh from Florida is proud to partner

33:53

with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Eat like a Jag

33:55

when you choose fresh from

33:57

Florida Jeff Logovan returns after

33:59

this. It's the Doug Peterson Show on the Jaguars

34:02

Radio Network.

34:17

Welcome back. The Doug Peterson

34:19

Show continues right.

34:21

Now, The Doug Peterson Show, presented

34:23

by Fresh from Florida. Food tastes

34:25

better when it's grown closer to home.

34:29

That's a fact. J. P.

34:30

Shadick, Jeff Logeman, The Doug

34:32

Peterson Show rolling along. That

34:35

was Calvin Ridley just moments ago from the locker room

34:37

yesterday. And we all kind

34:39

of by now know the story of Ridley

34:42

in his career up to now, and obviously

34:45

a big year for Calvin, and you

34:47

know, coming back off the suspension

34:49

and missing nearly two full seasons

34:52

and now he's played in every game.

34:53

And there have been some good moments.

34:56

There have been some moments you'd like to see

34:58

some better play and more con assistency out

35:00

of him as well. But you know, if

35:02

he has a chance now the last three weeks to really

35:05

step up and lead the way with this wide

35:07

receiver room, well he's got a great opportunity

35:10

because what is his contract

35:12

situation. I mean it's a

35:14

free agent, right, and so here

35:17

you go, there's three games left and opportunity

35:19

to be the focal point of an offense if

35:21

you can find a way to continue to

35:24

build the chemistry with your quarterback, whoever

35:26

that is. And

35:28

so for me, he needs

35:30

to take advantage of it. Now. There's

35:33

a lot of speculation about Calvin Ridley

35:35

in the future with his football team, and I

35:38

think all of that just needs to be put on hold.

35:41

To all of that, I say, live in the moment,

35:44

okay, because if all

35:46

of a sudden, you have great moments this

35:48

week, and then the next week, and then the week

35:50

after that, and then in the playoffs,

35:53

all of that will take care of itself, whether if

35:56

you're looking at it from his perspective or

35:59

you're looking at it from the team perspective. Everybody

36:03

needs to live in the now. And hopefully

36:06

this now moment that they have is going to be

36:08

really good for Calvin Ridley and Trevor

36:11

Or cj whoever it may be,

36:13

because with Christian Kirk out, with

36:16

now Zay Jones out, this

36:18

is a tremendous opportunity for

36:20

him to get more opportunities.

36:23

We talked a lot about the passing game, and obviously

36:26

the quarterback situation a little up in

36:28

the air. Let's see what Trevor Lawrence does, if

36:30

anything, on Friday, and that could

36:32

be a step in the right direction.

36:33

He has not practiced Wednesday or Thursday.

36:36

CJ. Bethard so far has taken all those

36:38

first team reps. So you

36:41

know, running the football has not been the

36:43

easiest as of late either, and that could

36:45

help an offense. When they've played

36:47

their best offensive football, they've run

36:49

the football and balanced things out, and they haven't

36:52

really been able to lean on that lately well. And

36:54

then the other thing that the running game gives

36:56

you that I think this offense is missing

36:58

a little bit. It gives you the play action,

37:01

which a lot of the explosive plays

37:03

come off of play action. And

37:07

when you have a solid, dependable

37:09

ground game, people load the box. They

37:11

deplete the back end, and then it gives

37:13

you an opportunity at hitting bigger plays,

37:16

and then teams aren't keeping their safeties back. The

37:18

Jaguars haven't really seen any loaded

37:21

boxes this year unless it's been a

37:23

four minute situation where they've got a lead and they're

37:25

trying to end up closing the game out, but it's by running it.

37:27

But for the most part throughout the ball

37:29

games, teams are respecting the past, they

37:31

know that this is a very quarterback centric offense.

37:34

I mean, if you look at the at

37:36

the half, you know, looking at the numbers

37:38

from this pass game, Trevor's numbers

37:41

at the half were actually pretty good sixteen of twenty

37:43

three, even though he had the

37:45

fumble which didn't help much. And

37:47

then also the situation that happened

37:49

right there before the half where they didn't get any points.

37:51

But if you look at the run pass ratio, Trevor

37:54

had twenty three attempts in the first half and Etn

37:56

had seven carries. I

37:59

mean that's a that's above a three to one race.

38:01

Yeah, that's a lot, you know, so.

38:04

You'd love to be able to have balance, and

38:07

I think right now they kind of realize that,

38:09

Look, we can't be a left they

38:11

can't be anything like the Ravens where they're going to run the

38:13

ball, run the ball, run the ball. But when

38:15

you can run the ball, that gives

38:17

you the opportunity at the explosive plays.

38:20

And right now, play action

38:22

is I mean, you're running the ball, but you're not running the ball

38:25

effectively to where you're getting defenses to go,

38:27

gosh, we really got to worry about this. This rushing

38:29

attack of the Jaguars. They're they're

38:31

not overly concerning themselves with it. Part

38:33

of that. I mean, remember Travis

38:35

Etn has been on the injury report the last

38:37

few weeks with a chest issue. He's not on there anymore.

38:40

No, And I thought I thought in early in the

38:42

game this past week, I

38:45

thought that they ran the ball pretty effectively

38:47

to start that game against the Ravens. I

38:49

thought they came out of the right attitude. We're gonna run

38:51

a little bit, We're gonna be physical. You

38:53

know, we're gonna we're gonna be able to play a little

38:55

bit of our own physical aspect of running

38:57

the game. And but it just didn't last.

39:00

Didn't have any footing to stay throughout the ball

39:02

game. And that's

39:04

where this offense, I think wants

39:06

to be at some point. I don't know if they're gonna be able

39:08

to get there this year. That's that's tough

39:11

to ask. They've had a lot of moving parts with the offensive

39:13

line. They have had some performances

39:15

upfront. That's not where it needs to be. And

39:19

then Etann, You're right, I thought he ran the ball

39:21

harder. He finished the plays early

39:23

in that game where the previous

39:25

game Cincinnati Cleveland. He

39:28

wasn't finishing some of the plays, so that's encouraging.

39:31

Darrens. Johnson's been slowed a little bit too. I

39:34

thought Bigsby was gonna have a little bit bigger role

39:36

this pass game, but the numbers just weren't there.

39:38

From a carry standpoint, he only got to

39:40

one carry for minus two yards. Could

39:42

he have a little bit of an impact this week?

39:45

You can get a backup running back a number of

39:48

carries, but you know, here's the thing. You got

39:50

to put some plays together as an offense for

39:52

the second running back or the third running

39:54

back to get carries, to stay on the field, sustaining

39:57

some drives right and some

39:59

success, run the ball, moving the chains

40:01

and then stack and plays back

40:03

in a moment Our final thoughts ahead of this

41:05

a fantastic job with the Money Night Football,

41:07

but now doesn't he?

41:08

Yeah?

41:09

And uh snoops

41:11

on there too? Yeah, the other great job, it's

41:13

cool.

41:14

Yeah. And George Straight, I mean, come on, George

41:16

Straight.

41:17

It's like how many? How many number one hit

41:19

country songs? Does George Strait have?

41:21

A lot? Big number?

41:22

It's a I want to say it's a record

41:25

of some kind, but it's just tremendous

41:27

amount. How does he too?

41:28

By the way, I bet you he's mid

41:30

sixties.

41:30

I'm goan to guess you think, Yeah, I'm gonna guess I

41:33

think he might be a What do you think?

41:34

What do you think? I think?

41:36

He'd probably be I'm gonna

41:38

say sixty six. I'm gonna say late sixties. Okay,

41:41

maybe seventy. Let's see he is seventy

41:43

one. Yeah wow, not that

41:45

yeah wow. But the number

41:47

of hit songs that he's had forty

41:49

four, No, no,

41:51

sixty yeah, it's crazy, sixty

41:54

number one crazy. So

41:56

that's in May, coming up in

41:58

like sixty ward it three days?

42:00

What day is this? Thursday?

42:02

The game's Sunday? Yes, the Jaguars

42:04

Thursday. Yeah. Hey, Christmas is coming

42:06

up too. The Jaguars get

42:08

the Buccaneers on Christmas Eve down

42:10

in Tampa Raymond James Stadium.

42:13

We all know the storylines by now. The quarterback

42:15

field, by the way, really oh the grass

42:18

is fantastic in Tampa.

42:19

Oh yeah.

42:20

If I had this discussion with somebody the other

42:22

day and we're talking

42:24

about the best fields in the National Football League,

42:27

and I would put Jacksonville's

42:29

in the top five. Tampa

42:31

has historically been the last time

42:33

we were there, I would say that that one's the top five

42:35

as well. You know, and typically the warmer

42:38

climates have the great one. You know, the old

42:40

Raymond James Stadium or whatever it was

42:42

called. What was it called oh, the old

42:44

some the sombrero. Yeah, I forget

42:46

the name of it, but yeah, this is Raymond James. That

42:48

one had this huge crown,

42:51

so as a pass rusher felt

42:54

like I was rushing uphill because it literally

42:56

had that much of a crown on the field. This

42:59

one has a right draining the system and it's

43:01

not crowned like that. It's

43:03

an exceptional playing surface in Tampa.

43:06

The Chiefs ahead, George Thoma is a

43:08

long time groundskeeper and always does the Super

43:10

Bowls and stuff like he's been there, right.

43:12

But the problem with Kansas City is that it's

43:14

in Kansas City. Okay, grass

43:16

doesn't grow great in Kansas City and the

43:19

fall. Some

43:21

grasses do grow better in colder weather, but

43:24

it's always going to be better in your

43:26

warmer climates for the most part. But

43:28

it's a good surface. It's a good surface, okay,

43:31

But you got to have a team playing well on

43:33

whatever surface is out there. But it's

43:35

a Tampa is a great playing

43:38

surface, okay with the Jaguars, no matter

43:40

the surface, need to play better football. Oh

43:42

yes, that that's a that's a big

43:44

yes, GP. You know, stop and stop the self inflicted

43:47

wounds, you know, start playing some clean football. You

43:49

know, if you go back and you look at the last three

43:51

games in the losing streak, you can point to different

43:53

moments to where the team has made mistakes

43:56

which are completely in their control, and that they

43:58

don't make those mistakes or if they may those

44:00

plays, they win those

44:02

three games. And that's that's

44:04

kind of the story of the league. If

44:06

you look at a Tom

44:09

Coughlin coach team, Doug Peterson

44:11

going back to the Super Bowl year

44:14

last year, as they got on that run, they

44:16

weren't beating themselves and historically

44:18

those other teams, as Doug Peterson, they

44:20

didn't. They didn't beat themselves. And

44:23

if you take care of the football and you don't

44:25

make mistakes, you give yourself a great chance

44:27

of winning. And that's the margin for

44:30

error in this league is so small. It's

44:33

much different than college football because

44:35

a lot of people try to try to think of it

44:37

as college football are similar to college

44:39

football, and you can't look at it that way. You

44:42

know, they're like, how in the world can they lose

44:44

to that team? Well, you know what, the guys

44:46

are on the other side of the ball. They get paid too,

44:49

Okay, they get paid a lot of money.

44:51

They do and it'll be this Sunday

44:53

four or five.

44:54

Cake, We're on the air on the network at three o'clock with

44:56
