John Holbrook explains Mason Bees with Eph & Jeff
Bees are responsible for pollinating many of our most important fruits and vegetables, but they are mysteriously disappearing around the world in the billions. Beekeepers across the USA have lost 40-100% of their bees, and the issues don’t seem to be going away. Estimates that the UK have lost over 30% of their bees, and Italy 50% show it’s not just an American issue.
Thankfully, an organization called Friends of the Earth has done some serious research and produced a document entitled: Follow the Honey: 7 ways pesticide companies are spinning the bee crisis to protect profits, showing how neonics are the root of the issue killing bees around the world. By simply refraining from certain pesticides, farmers can ensure that the bees in their areas won’t be killed off.
In this episode, Eph & Jeff interview John Holbrook and talk about bees, in particular Mason Bees. These are not your regular honey-producing buzzers, but solitary pollinators which have a much farther reach and potency.
John Holbrook has fashioned a wide range of “bee hotels” out of wood, and educates listeners about bee care and importance in this fascinating and increasingly important topic.
