Today’s guest is an LA-based actor and YouTuber named Taylor Calmus. Taylor grew up riding BMX bikes in a tiny town in South Dakota, which is loosely how we got connected—that is through a mutual friend named Aaron Nardi that rides bikes and does video production.

Taylor is a prime example of someone that has intentionally designed his life the way he wants to live it.

He has appeared in tons of commercials and numerous sketches on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show. He’s even had a roll in the popular TV show The Middle.

More recently he has been focusing on his YouTube channel Dude Dad—a weekly vlog with funny sketches, life lessons, and other things that revolve around him being a new dad. His most popular video was a Rube Goldberg machine made out of baby items that took three days to set up and eventually revealed the gender of their second baby. That video collectively has somewhere in the neighbored of 50 million views. If you’re not familiar with the term Rube Goldberg machine, it’s one of those contraptions that shows a series of events setting of another sequence of events. So for example, a golf ball will fall down some tracks and hit a bottle and the bottle will spin and hit something else that flies on a string and knocks over a toy, and the process continues…and in Taylor’s case the sequence ended with a blower spewing pink paper into the air reveling that their baby was going to be a girl.

Throughout our conversation we kept coming back to a central topic, and that is how Taylor designs his life in such a way that he can do the things he loves without having to work around a schedule that a job or boss lays out for him.

We actually didn’t have time to get into this, but in addition to his acting and YouTube channel, Taylor also sells super cool graffiti stencil artwork and is the master mind behind and part owner of a company called Taybles that makes these really awesome coffee tables in the shape of a giant cassette tape.

But what we did talk about is what it was like moving from a town of about 900 people to Los Angeles to follow his dream of becoming an actor. We discussed how he gets acting gigs and what he’s done over the years to hone his craft.

Throughout the conversation Taylor shared one of the biggest lessons he’s learned to become a better actor that also helps in his everyday life.

We also talked about the different odd jobs and side hustles he’s done to get by so he can still do things on his own terms and schedule.

And of course I picked his brain about his up and coming YouTube channel and dug into how the Dude Dad brand is starting to make money in several different ways.
