Why am I dying to live if I’m just living to die? Discussing processes of overcoming suicidal thoughts.

First. Assess your current environment. This will allow you to better manage your risk and vulnerability levels. If you’re prone to suicidal thoughts you may need to ensure your home is free of harsh poisons, weapons firearms or medications if possible. Consider housing anything that isn’t a necessity in a designated location or with someone you trust. 

Second. What are your warning signs or triggers? The ongoing definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over yet expect different results. Is the relationship you’re in bringing out the best or worst in you? Is your current line of employment actually serving you or stressing you? Do you have a down peer group or a group of people that generate doubt? 

You’ve ensured your safety & assessed your triggers, now we determine what coping strategies you’re currently using.

Coping methods that serve you vs the ones that don’t. This is all about developing or rather beginning a healthier relationship with growth & development. What inevitably won’t work: 

• Increased substance use 

• Dwelling in feelings of hopeless

• Anger, resentment, seeking revenge

• Reckless behavior

• Self Isolation 

Part of the process includes replacing your current strategies with skills that will have a positive impact on the quality of your life & relationships. Healthy Coping Strategies Include:

• Conflict resolution

• Stress and anxiety management

• Becoming firmer in your responses to others and yourself

• Relationship building practices

• Relaxation

• Self-care

• Increased communication

• Mindfulness (e.g., being present or living in the moment)
