“Just how much of brewing is science and how much is art?” This week our guest is Natasha Peiskar, head brewer at Last Best Brewing Company. We discuss her surprising career changes, return to university, and love for horse racing.

Like many brewers, Natasha’s journey began with home brewing. While returning to university after leaving a career as a chemical analyst Natasha recognized that it would look good to join a club, and settled on the home brewing club. This passion for beer would later take Natasha to Calgary’s NTNL, Bomber Brewing in BC, Toolshed in Calgary, and finally to her current role as head brewer at Last Best

We also chat about Pink Boots Day, the annual collaborative brewing day put on by the Pink Boots Society, an organization dedicated to providing networking opportunities for women working in the craft beer industry, a typically male-dominated space. Pink Boots is 2500 members strong world wide, and the funds that result from the beers brewed on Pink Boots Day go towards initiatives like the bursary for women in the brewing program at Olds College.

Keeping with our ongoing theme of work-life balance, Natasha also shares with us one of the tools she uses to keep on top of her wellbeing while participating in the “work hard, play hard” mentality of the craft beer industry. We discuss the benefits of being able to make quick check-ins using just a number to identify your mental state, and how we can help each other out.
