This week at The Film Club we’re kicking off our Newvember Series with a twist, all of the films this month will be picked by our guests! This episode is all about the A24 film Under the Silver Lake. The film follows Sam an artist living in Silver Lake who’s aimlessly floating through life while occasionally indulging in conspiracies and hidden messages in pop culture. On the heels of being evicted from his apartment Sam notices a new neighbor and is compelled to meet her. Once he meets his new neighbor Sarah she invites him into her apartment where they hangout for a while before she boots him out when her roommate’s and a mysterious pirate return to the apartment. With promise of plans to hangout again the following day Sam is shocked when he returns to Sarah’s apartment and it’s completely empty. Stunned by her sudden disappearance he breaks into the apartment and discovers a box in her closet containing a few personal items including a photo of herself and if things weren’t confusing enough Sam finds an odd marking painted on her bedroom wall. Sam is compelled to find Sarah and begins to unravel clues all throughout Los Angeles which leads him to a dangerous world not too many people know exist.
