Okay , guys , once again we are

0:22

back with our podcast

0:24

, the Flower Files . Today

0:30

we are going to talk about the oh so favorable

0:32

question of all of you environmental

0:35

, weather , animal loving people

0:37

, especially those polar bears . We

0:40

are going to talk about weather changing and

0:42

global change and climate

0:44

and how it affects us , because we

0:46

could go into eons of information

0:48

, but today we are going to talk about how it works

0:50

with our flowers and how it affects us

0:53

. So my first question I feel

0:55

like we can all answer this in

0:58

our own way , because we all see it from different perspectives

1:00

. So how

1:03

does global warming change what

1:05

we grow and when and how ? Honestly

1:07

, this year , with being so cold , it's

1:10

not even October yet and we have

1:12

Scabiosa and Zinnias and

1:14

Celosia and Dianthus

1:16

in the same field .

1:19

that is record-breaking . It's

1:22

not okay . I" just sitting in the flower

1:24

and literally there's a bucket sitting

1:26

next to Gomphrena and

1:29

Zinnias with Scabiosa

1:31

. God forbid there's a bachelor

1:33

button that comes in and that means that it's cold

1:36

.

1:36

Well , the Nigella is what

1:38

? Four or five inches .

1:42

Mother Nature is confused and I hope it kills all

1:44

of the European hornets this year . Oh

1:47

, and I hope to God

1:49

we have a decent winter with maybe

1:51

one or two snows , and then it's done . I

1:53

hope we don't freeze to death , but still I'm

1:57

ready for the bugs to die .

1:59

The bugs have been a lot this year and I

2:01

think it's because we had such a mild

2:03

winter last year .

2:04

The past couple of winters haven't been that bad . We're

2:06

like oh yeah , it's fine . We've got massive

2:08

grasshoppers longer than my feet out in

2:10

the field .

2:12

So I just clarified it . Your feet are very small

2:14

.

2:15

I do wear size six , but still those

2:17

grasshoppers are like something you see from

2:19

Costa Rica .

2:20

And New fear unlocked, European

2:22

hornets in the car . Absolutely not

2:24

.

2:24

Yes .

2:25

You have to explain why it was in the car

2:28

.

2:29

De-railing for a moment , but you have to hear this .

2:32

Okay , so there was a bouquet that was made , that was put

2:34

in the cooler and the European hornet was like this the

2:36

cold 41.2

2:39

degree cooler , that is , temperature controlled

2:42

. Overnight !

2:43

This bouquet was made a day before . Yes , so

2:46

when this happened , I don't know .

2:47

Yeah , so it was between that time that hornet went

2:49

to sleep , it went into hibernation and

2:52

then it entered my car in the heat on

2:54

the way to a wedding two hours away

2:56

. Two hours or three hours , it

2:58

was over two , I don't know about three , okay , and the hornet woke up

3:00

In

3:05

the moving vehicle with two lovely

3:08

wildly native ladies on a

3:10

road where you could not pull over . There

3:13

was no shoulder , there was a car behind me and

3:17

, out of thin air , a European

3:19

hornet up here is in the front windshield .

3:21

And if you don't know what a European hornet is

3:23

, stick up your thumb .

3:25

Look at it , double it and

3:28

that's the European hornet .

3:29

It's huge , it's half yellow , it's

3:32

like yellow striped and red and

3:34

black and they look mean

3:36

. They're awful . At night if I

3:38

have my lights on , they come at my windows

3:40

and I can hear them hit my glass .

3:42

And when you hear okay , so

3:44

you guys already know that I'm a nerd , so whatever

3:46

I'm just going to put on the shelf . But like a

3:48

lot of times when you hear a bee or something

3:51

buzzing next to you , you're like a fly . Yeah

3:53

, you're like

3:55

a kind of sound .

3:56

These guys are like yeah

3:59

, you're like , oh God , it's next to me . Where did

4:01

it go ? Don't breathe . Yeah , you

4:06

should have seen me the other night . It was like literally

4:09

like nine o'clock , 10 o'clock

4:11

, 10 , 45 at night . It was one of our long

4:13

nights and they're attracted

4:15

to light and mom's

4:18

outside .

4:19

So it's the night before we're supposed to get a tropical

4:21

storm , so we're trying to get everything

4:23

loaded that we've done the night before .

4:25

Because it was cool , the flowers were amazing and that was

4:27

real life . Everything was fine and the

4:29

door was open to the barn . We have fluorescent

4:31

lights and a sign that will

4:34

beam across two front yards

4:36

into your eyes if it is on

4:38

. It's a neon sign . It is so bright

4:40

, but this hornet just moseyed

4:43

its way into the barn . I

4:45

thought I was going to die . Thank

4:48

God we have like two stories , but

4:50

if they see movement they like come

4:52

at you . Yeah .

4:53

Because they're curious .

4:55

So I like , hopped

4:57

on the floor and squatted and

4:59

turned off all the lights and waited

5:02

until it went out the door Back

5:04

to the porch light . And then , well , what

5:06

freaks me out is that you wear a headlamp at night . Yeah

5:08

, it's going to come at your fore heand .

5:10

Well , there's definitely times where I'm trying to like , if there's

5:12

a storm coming or something's happening , I throw

5:14

on a headlamp so that I can have

5:16

my hands free to drop the sides or check

5:19

a fence or whatever it is that I need to do

5:21

at some weird crazy hour .

5:23

I mean , you can hear those suckers coming Because

5:26

it's , it's , it's , it's , it's it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's

5:28

, it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's

5:30

, it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's , it's it's .

5:32

It's . It's it's because there's some things that

5:34

it it has a huge fresco . It's

5:37

this it has extend 나서 , ensay mackend of grace , ma mandatory perennialsure

5:40

, like you say Cause

5:43

. I don't knock it out . Yeah , but the the reason

5:45

why you say it makes the other mm . Yeah , so

5:47

I , I feel , I feel like I feel so glued

5:50

out . I know I feel like some of these go in and the

5:52

chill you feel . But

5:57

that's our windows

6:01

down . She was gonna yeet the bouquet out the window

6:03

. It was like the bridal bouquet . Nothing

6:05

was gone . It was dead meat gone

6:07

, but you know

6:10

it was still defrosting

6:12

, so it was just hanging out . And

6:14

if you can , eventually the car behind

6:16

me passed me and if you can imagine

6:18

me like slouched down , screaming

6:22

as far away . Eventually

6:25

it left and I put the window up and that's

6:27

where I held on to my car while I was doing like

6:30

70 miles an hour for

6:32

a while .

6:35

He says hang in ten man , let's

6:40

go .

6:44

New fear unlocked . No , thank you .

6:48

So , yeah , we're ready for a winter

6:50

where it kind of resets everything

6:52

, because I'm okay with horse

6:55

flies and mosquitoes , now I will gladly take

6:57

them . Yeah , no more bees , bumblebees

7:00

, I will take these

7:02

and honeybees .

7:05

No problem .

7:08

Hornets ? Hell no .

7:10

I think one of the other things that happened this summer

7:12

that's been one of the first

7:14

times is it was so dry for

7:17

so long and we have three hives

7:19

of honeybees out back and

7:21

we have whiskey barrels that

7:24

have water in them with some rocks , but

7:26

I think the bees were looking for water

7:28

so much Our bucket

7:30

washing station out front really

7:33

became kind of like a hive

7:36

no , a

7:40

mecca , hibernation

7:42

, a resource

7:44

point .

7:45

You know what it's ? A micro environment for

7:47

the honeybees . Science !

7:52

But they would just well in the book

7:54

bags that we use for the

7:57

dahlias . We wash them in between so

8:00

that you know you're not spreading diseases

8:02

. And if there's bugs that do land on them and they do

8:04

add little like poop , birth footprints

8:06

or any of that kind of stuff , like any of that

8:09

stuff , we wash them . But

8:11

that's a great landing site for those

8:13

honeybees because we would put them in the water and just

8:15

get you know it's wash them around . And , oh

8:18

my gosh , that was definitely a okay

8:20

, don't step in the flight path , stay

8:22

out of the way . But it was just honeybees

8:25

in there . So it was very interesting

8:27

to see how they interacted

8:30

. I mean , there were no wasps , there was nothing

8:32

else , it was just the honeybees , I

8:34

don't know . It was interesting . Yeah , we

8:36

had a . So fun fact my

8:39

parents have a little bird bath and my dad was

8:41

building like little bridges and little

8:44

honeybees spots for the bees to be able

8:46

to land and not get their feet

8:48

wet but still get a drain he's

8:50

like I found a great stick today .

8:52

He's retired , by the way .

8:56

100% , 100%

8:58

. But how does it getting so hot during the

9:01

summer and so cool so early during the fall

9:03

change how we grow things ?

9:05

It shortens the season and we get lucky

9:07

with spring stuff . Yeah , the way

9:09

that we start to hunt for stuff is

9:11

ridiculous when it gets cold . And

9:14

oh and , by the way , the caterpillars

9:16

this year have absolutely

9:18

ruined two whole rows

9:20

of Celosia . Gone .

9:23

What kind of caterpillars are they ? What are they ? They're from

9:25

the vegetables !

9:30

They're clear . Little , and they're

9:32

probably clear because they're larvae I don't really know , but

9:35

they're clear . They came

9:37

from moths . Little like

9:40

mushy things

9:43

, I don't know . I found them on my floor in my room . I

9:45

found them in my bed . They

9:48

stick to your leg Like they

9:50

just and they're slimy . But

9:52

they don't even just chew holes in

9:54

the leaves , they chew on the

9:56

Celosia and then it turns white Like

9:59

the dark red marine siloja

10:01

turns white like blank

10:03

, like cox cove white .

10:07

So there's a couple different varieties that we have out there

10:09

, and every year the cox

10:12

cone variety , the one that looks like that , the

10:14

brain . Yeah looks like brain or the head of a

10:16

rooster or chicken or something like that , they

10:19

demolish that and then they eventually

10:21

start to figure out the other

10:23

stuff . So I think when

10:26

we see the moths because we

10:29

would walk out and everybody's like , oh , look at all

10:31

the butterflies I was like , mm-mm , those are not butterflies

10:33

, those are moths .

10:34

So all the cute little white butterflies you see flying

10:36

early , early , early , early , early

10:38

in the spring . Don't like them . They eat your

10:40

flowers and especially our flowers .

10:43

Everything , and it's really

10:45

hard because we try to be as organic

10:47

and natural as possible .

10:47

And then the caterpillars get into Lysiampus and

10:49

they just grow and they grow and

10:51

their poop gets bigger and it's so disgusting

10:54

and it's horrible , yeah

10:56

, Because from afar you're like

10:58

, oh , stop that bit , We'll just peel off the leaves . Well then you

11:00

go into the head of the silocia

11:02

, into the in-between parts

11:05

of the center . Yeah , because there's so many little folds and

11:07

there's one here , two there , and

11:09

you're like well , can't put that in the picture , can't put that in the bouquet

11:11

, like can't put that in a detail shot , can't

11:13

use it in corsages

11:15

or boutonniers or nothing

11:18

, absolutely nothing . Nope , I'm

11:20

so frustrated , I'm

11:23

so frustrated . I was out there this morning and I was just

11:25

staring at it and I was like fuck

11:28

, what are we going to

11:30

do ? I texted Kenly and she was

11:33

like we're going to have to do something

11:35

. I was like , dude , Celosia

11:38

is the last thing to go . Yeah

11:40

, like you cut it .

11:41

It's the last thing of summer to go and it

11:43

dries really well and it's really

11:45

one of our staple flowers . Yeah , we use

11:47

that the batch that's out there now .

11:49

It had just started to be cuttable

11:51

because they bloom , and then there's two

11:53

stems , and then you cut it , and then there's OK

11:55

. But , we leave a lump for a little bit

11:57

and you have a bush . It was a full

11:59

shrub , and now it's just skeletons

12:02

. Not as bad as the amaranth , though .

12:04

Oh my gosh , the amaranth was demolished

12:06

this year De-demolished

12:08

. It was crazy .

12:10

So we're ready for cold weather to kill all

12:12

of the bad bugs , and I think that

12:14

there's a misunderstanding with global warming , that

12:16

global warming means that it's getting hotter

12:19

outside , but there are two extremes

12:21

to it . We have hotter summers and colder

12:23

winters . So what

12:26

does that mean for us going into

12:28

the planting season ?

12:29

Well , it definitely means that we're depending a lot more

12:31

on our hoop houses to give us the shoulders on

12:33

the seasons . But , with that being

12:36

said , we have to be really careful Because if

12:38

we have a really warm day , we have to make sure

12:40

those sides are open . So not everything in that

12:42

hoop house fries , but then we

12:44

have really , really , really chilly nights . We

12:46

need to make sure that that ground is

12:48

nice and warm and not freezing , because

12:51

that really is what determines things

12:53

doing well or not doing well . And we're

12:56

layering extra agribon

12:58

fabric and running propane

13:00

heaters and everything we can to try

13:02

to keep a little bit of warmth in there .

13:04

And I think this year is the longest year we've had with

13:06

stuff in the hoop house , because usually we're like , oh

13:08

yeah , it's fine , we'll clean it out in the fall

13:10

, it's done .

13:12

We worked really hard this

13:14

year to make sure that that was

13:16

productive year round .

13:18

And it looks amazing , yeah , like

13:20

there's no weeds which is

13:22

very unheard of .

13:24

Yeah , but like it's just , I'm

13:26

excited for next year Because I feel like we're really in

13:29

the system .

13:30

Every year we get better and better and I feel like we

13:32

did pretty good with the

13:35

colors and the things

13:38

to plant , like the specific varieties of things

13:40

of colors to plant , like we love

13:42

zinnias . But there's this one

13:44

mix that's just pretty much purple and orange

13:47

, and not a lot of you guys want purple and orange

13:49

in your weddings until like fall Right

13:51

, so we're

13:53

out of white zinnias until the

13:56

next batch is up . There's a whole batch that Kenly

13:58

planted of just white zinnias and I'm out there and like

14:00

, well , thank God , because hydrangeas

14:02

are almost done , like you

14:04

know , thank God that she

14:07

planted them Right , and the more we cut

14:09

, the more they grow Our zinnias . That one

14:11

row next to the tithonia is like

14:13

up to my shoulders . Yeah , they're huge

14:15

, it's so tall , but we've also

14:17

cut them from like .

14:20

June . Yeah , yeah , yeah

14:22

. Well , they're a cut and come again . Flower . You've

14:24

got your one . Hit wonders like a sunflower

14:26

. You plant the seed , plant the plant , you

14:29

cut it and it's finished . But things

14:31

like zinnias , cosmos , even

14:33

gonfrina the more you cut them , the more they

14:35

push the cosmos have been really fussy this year . I've

14:39

been reading a lot of blogs . I've been

14:41

hearing a lot of people are cutting their

14:44

varieties of cosmos . Like

14:46

the only variety people want to use is the

14:48

Versailles , because they just get

14:50

so funky and they get so beaten up

14:52

and then they also don't

14:54

last . Great , they don't have good face

14:56

. Life Like they're pretty

14:59

, they're pretty .

14:59

They're wispy and they do all of the things

15:01

, but your first set of blooms bloom and

15:04

then they look like crap

15:06

because you have a dead bloom . And

15:08

then from that bloom , is that next to .

15:10

Well , you're constantly deadheading , constantly

15:13

deadheading , and as soon as it gets cool

15:15

, that's when that Versailles variety comes back

15:17

up . But actually the room's great Like

15:20

in .

15:20

Oasis . Clearly you can't

15:22

put hanging cosmos from in

15:25

a bouquet because it'll wilt , but still it's

15:27

a pretty good filler .

15:29

And it's great for scatterbases and

15:31

things like that , because it's that light in the area

15:33

and dainting and fairy-like and

15:36

it's beautiful . It's

15:38

beautiful , but man

15:41

, sometimes is it hard to grow ? I

15:44

don't know .

15:44

And what about when it's extremely cold

15:47

outside ? We already have plants in the ground , ward

15:51

, florida and boom , there's snow coming .

15:54

So well , if there's snow coming and it's

15:56

supposed to be super cold , not a problem

15:58

, because snow is an insulator . And

16:01

so in the fall when we plant

16:03

, we we plant a whole bunch of cool

16:05

season things and you

16:09

can put plants in in the fall

16:11

and then they grow very

16:13

, very slowly all through the winter , but

16:16

we give them a little and

16:18

they grow slowly because the Sun

16:20

isn't out for as long

16:22

during the day , so they don't have as much sunlight

16:25

to photosynthesize , to grow themselves , to

16:27

grow more , to get taller . But

16:35

we put hoops over

16:37

, so a hoop is like either metal

16:40

or plastic I have used both and

16:43

then use what's called agribon and there's

16:45

different thicknesses of it . But that gives

16:47

between five to ten degrees of

16:49

warmth on top of the air

16:52

. It also keeps frost off . It keeps

16:54

the wind off . There's bags

16:56

that go to .

16:57

I mean there's a lot of work that goes into

16:59

it and another thing with snow too , the

17:01

past couple years and

17:03

I have that landscape design

17:06

plant brain , kind of like mom , but

17:08

just in a different sense . With Snow

17:12

, with the way that we've had it , a

17:14

lot of our stuff , especially last

17:17

year and the year before , was short . Snow

17:21

is actually the best form of

17:23

watering for trees and

17:25

plants and your perennials because it

17:28

melts slower . You don't have

17:30

that flush of water where you're saturating

17:33

the soil too fast so that there's no Oxygen

17:36

soil for the roots and the rise of them and all the things

17:38

to be able to grow . So

17:41

when it's slow , everything

17:43

takes its time and actually

17:45

gets a drink . Yeah , yeah so no

17:47

chugging . Yeah , so in the winter time , trees actually

17:50

get their most amount of hydration in

17:52

the winter , and

17:54

that's why I mean I know there's

17:57

multiple reasons of why PA trees are 10,000

17:59

times higher than what we have , because they're competing all the time

18:01

but still like and

18:03

there there's some late time is shorter

18:06

than ours , so that's why they're taller , because they're whatever

18:08

. But

18:10

snow is a good thing

18:13

, it's a really good thing . Yeah

18:15

, what are we looks amazing .

18:17

If it's gonna snow , we have to go out and

18:19

we have to pull all of those hoops off . We

18:21

pull all those covers off , because what happens

18:23

is the snow falls on top

18:25

and it just pushes everything down when

18:28

, if it snows and everything

18:30

is exposed , it's just kind

18:32

of a natural blanket that lays on

18:34

everything . Snow is one thing , but

18:36

I'll tell you , what really kicks everybody's

18:38

butt is wind . It's

18:41

the wind that is just brutal

18:43

, from not just knocking things

18:45

over , but from actually like burning

18:47

them . It just makes it really hard .

18:49

Now we don't have problem with the deer and the foxes

18:51

because we actually have that massive fence up today , yeah

18:53

that , yeah , um , that was a huge thing

18:56

. That helped us , because there would just be times where

18:58

, like it would be beautiful , and then the next day there

19:00

have been a fox trying to

19:02

chase the toad at night and it you're

19:04

completely ruined a whole

19:06

section , yeah , and we're like , well , can't use

19:08

that be more , yeah , other than a couple rabbits here

19:10

in here with the Lizzie and this , because Foxes

19:14

running through the actual buttons .

19:15

It goes two years ago now and half my role

19:17

was just completely laid over .

19:19

Yeah like well I

19:21

? They're clearly

19:23

not out there trying to . You know , fix them

19:25

, they're getting dinner yeah

19:27

so fun fact really quick .

19:30

I read this on the air . You know you can't post

19:32

anything there . That is the truth . Supposedly

19:35

, Fall foliage is better

19:37

in New York than it is in Maryland

19:39

because we were in the Ice

19:41

Age more recently than they were . Yep

19:44

, this room , Okay

19:46

so you're not didn't lie to me this time .

19:48

No , that wouldn't surprise me at all . So when

19:50

there's

19:52

gonna go science , you and you completely do

19:54

, really , but in

19:57

Like

20:00

environmental crisis , but we

20:02

were around to experience it you know , there

20:04

was a park or there is a national

20:06

park , and I can't remember for life , me which

20:08

I should know because I did a

20:10

class project on it . I should probably

20:12

remember it um , but

20:15

there is a national

20:17

park in South

20:19

Carolina I think it's

20:21

in the south but it's in the Piedmont

20:24

and they actually

20:26

have trees that grow

20:28

in swamps because they

20:31

were used to all the water

20:34

and all like the saturation and that's

20:36

why their soil is so different . That's why they

20:38

don't have the same thing that we have . Like

20:40

we have trees that can grow in swampy

20:42

areas but they live in like water

20:44

, Like are you talking about

20:46

, like Cyprus and things like that ? Just

20:49

there there's a specific kind of tree , though , and

20:51

I can't remember life , me , because I , you know , not

20:53

like I went to school or anything .

20:57

I hope your professors are listening .

21:00

I'll get crap for it at some point in my life , I'm

21:02

sure , um , but

21:05

it's pretty cool to see what like two hours

21:07

can do , what four hours can do in

21:10

like a difference can make Like

21:12

even just going up from here to school

21:14

with driving . I

21:17

bet you , like you , went to New York last week , how

21:20

close were they to fall compared to here ?

21:22

Oh , they're gonna be in full fall foliage like this week

21:24

or maybe next .

21:25

Yeah , it's insane , it's September

21:27

. Yeah , that's what I'm telling

21:29

you Like . Oh yeah , they're like two . Like PA , like

21:32

school , like Del Valle is like was always

21:34

two to three weeks ahead of our like schedule

21:37

. So I'd freeze my butt off up at

21:39

school and I'd come home and I'd be totally

21:41

warm and I'd be fine because I had already acclimated

21:43

to five days up in like 47 degree weather . I

21:46

come home and it's still 64 . Yeah , and

21:48

it's literally only two hours away .

21:50

And what's this tree up here that drops all the monkey balls ? It's

21:54

a sweet gum . Okay , great this week

21:56

. Huh , there are none of them in New York . Really

21:59

None . I've never been there . I

22:02

never once saw a sweet gum like ball Interesting

22:04

Not a single one . Very interesting . So

22:06

, yeah , the changes

22:09

in the environment are really affecting

22:11

everything

22:13

, everything , yeah

22:15

, and it's not the first time that it's happened

22:17

. We have the exit .

22:19

Does it take a circle of love

22:21

? It's

22:25

true , though . Everything talks

22:27

to each other . Everything has

22:29

a communication

22:32

system , like everything , anything

22:34

and everything . It's just

22:36

fascinating .

22:38

It's like last week . I

22:41

did a story on our Instagram

22:43

about you could feel the weather

22:45

coming .

22:46

OK , you can smell it . People thought I was insane

22:48

about school . There's an actual word for that . I

22:50

don't know what it is , but it's a 6% on

22:52

the screen . Yeah , I

22:56

would look at people like what's it

22:58

supposed to rain . I'm like , yeah , you guys can smell it

23:00

. And they were like what ? You smell

23:02

rain . I was like yeah , they were

23:04

like well , we know what it smells like . Afterwards I said yeah , dead

23:06

worms .

23:08

OK , no .

23:09

Why actual rain ? When

23:11

everybody runs out . They're all poor worms .

23:13

Petrichor , so P-E-T-R-I-C-H-O-R

23:17

is the smell of rain . The word comes from

23:20

the Greek word petra , meaning stone

23:22

, an icor , which in

23:24

Greek mythology refers

23:26

to the golden fluid that flows in the veins of

23:28

the immortals .

23:30

So there's great mythology .

23:32

Yeah .

23:33

I like that .

23:34

So you can smell all kinds of

23:36

cool stuff . But there's an actual

23:38

word for that , you can call it .

23:40

I just call it it smells good .

23:42

It does smell good , smells amazing . So

23:45

, no , but last week , trying to get ready

23:47

, we had a couple weddings over

23:49

the weekend , we had a women's

23:52

circle night , which was absolutely amazing

23:54

, and we

23:56

were trying to get ready for the tropical

23:58

storm that was coming , which entails

24:00

tie everything up , cut things back

24:02

that we know that might break and

24:06

, of course , all the typical make sure the buckets are

24:08

put away , make sure all of the things are .

24:10

The table are broken down because we have a broken

24:12

window .

24:14

Yeah , no , don't want any of that kind of stuff

24:16

. But trying to figure out what that looks like

24:18

and also

24:20

being realistic in the things that , ok

24:22

, we know that that's pretty

24:25

close to the season , on that , we're

24:27

not going to waste our time trying to save that

24:29

Kind

24:31

of trying to hunt and pack and figure

24:33

out and doing a super hard

24:35

, cutting ahead of time , because if a flower's

24:38

open and it gets rained on , all

24:40

those petals get messed up . You

24:42

can't save them . So

24:44

we cut and we cut , and we cut , and we

24:46

cut and we cut , and I can't tell you how many times

24:48

you've cut in the dark because we

24:51

know that weather's coming .

24:52

Yeah , or in the rain in the morning

24:54

. Yeah , that was an interesting day

24:57

. That was so wet .

24:58

Oh my god , yeah

25:00

, it was not fun . No , not

25:03

fun at all . Yeah , and

25:05

then tornadoes and hail . I

25:08

mean , it's lions and tigers

25:10

and bears , it's

25:13

all of the things . It's definitely

25:15

it's a lot .

25:16

Global warming has brought out some really extreme weather

25:19

. I

25:21

mean , what happens if the field floods

25:23

? What happens if it's all gone

25:25

?

26:40

Well , if the field floods , that our house would be under water

26:42

. That's a problem , I

26:45

mean technically , until you get to

26:48

. I think , like Galena

26:50

, we're not like we're

26:52

at sea level .

26:53

Yeah , we're not in a flood zone .

26:55

No , like Galena , I think , is only like 30

26:57

feet and actually , fun fact I'm pretty

26:59

sure it's Germany . I could be wrong , my

27:02

professor told me so I could be wrong Because

27:04

I'm right now in the middle of the hallway , but Germany

27:07

is under sea level .

27:09

Yeah , there are definitely some countries out there that are built below sea

27:11

level .

27:12

Like I yeah , it's just , that's just wild

27:14

Me like well

27:16

, what do you know ? What

27:20

happened ?

27:20

now I don't know it's funny

27:22

, germany I always picture is like mountains and

27:25

like it's where they play soccer . Yeah

27:31

, no , it's . I don't know

27:33

if the field there's only okay

27:35

. So back up to here , probably

27:38

three years now .

27:40

And maybe of the summer when there were farms done in

27:42

Salisbury flooded and there

27:44

were farmers that , like were out their entire

27:46

livelihood because their fields were underwater

27:48

.

27:49

Yeah , they were underwater for extended periods

27:51

of time .

27:52

Like they were rowing boats through their fields .

27:55

Oh , that's horrifying . Yeah , no

27:57

, I mean it was two

27:59

or three summers ago and it was a

28:01

hurricane that had come through and things

28:03

definitely were flooded . I mean it was

28:05

, it was a lot of fun actually . But

28:08

I don't know . Sometimes there's there's

28:11

a little bit of prayer that goes on . You know , you

28:13

just say okay , and there's some plans that

28:16

can sustain it and

28:18

there's some plans that are just

28:20

too stressed . That's definitely

28:23

how we we . There was one section of field

28:25

that was much lower than the other and

28:29

we have spent a ton of time Fixing

28:36

that section of field to really

28:38

kind of bring it back up and get it really I don't know back up so that it's all level

28:41

. So we don't have those different spots , because it's

28:43

also not fun to walk in all that muck either . So

28:48

I will say one of the side effects of

28:50

warmer weather is little . Miss Lizzie

28:52

over there definitely enjoys being outside

28:54

and

28:57

in the sunshine . Yeah , so I definitely think maybe we

28:59

get a little more sunburn . Oh

29:03

yeah , 100% . Do

29:06

you remember when I went ?

29:07

to that day game with Ken Lee . How burnt .

29:09

I was .

29:09

You guys are burnt pretty bad

29:11

. Oh yeah , that was probably the first time you guys were out in

29:13

the sun , so it was like

29:15

June May .

29:15

June , I think it was May .

29:17

Yeah .

29:18

It was like yeah .

29:22

You weren't just red .

29:22

You were like almost a hue of purple . Yeah

29:24

, I was like oh , I think you

29:26

peeled like three times .

29:28

Oh , yeah , I

29:30

had to attend a wedding that weekend oh my gosh

29:32

. I had to attend one . Yeah , this is great .

29:35

This is me just glowing in the corner

29:37

, yeah , but

29:42

I think , when it comes to some of that stuff too , one

29:45

of the things that you know folks really don't

29:47

talk about is what we wait for . What

29:49

do we wear ? So

29:51

we wear . You're always in coveralls

29:53

, like you'll throw coveralls on a lot

29:55

.

29:56

Well , I get itchy from everything

29:58

, yeah , and

30:01

I don't want my jeans that I just put on 20 minutes

30:03

ago to get covered and got on my nose

30:05

and then I have to go change Again .

30:07

And that's the opposite of me , because I'm usually changing

30:09

my clothes like 300 times a day . Yeah

30:11

, I'm just like whatever , I need new socks .

30:13

Well , I used to complain all the time

30:16

about all of the dew all over the plants

30:18

and all the flowers and everything . And the one morning when it

30:20

was dry , I was cutting gum frina

30:22

and the fuzz from the gum frina

30:24

flow everywhere . But

30:27

all down my neck it got on my sweatshirt , like

30:29

you could see it , like I know it

30:31

has it , because like , yeah , like if we strip the

30:33

leaves off of it , but

30:36

it wasn't wet , it was dry

30:38

, so it was just flying everywhere . So every

30:40

morning I'm like why is everything wet

30:42

? My legs are soaking wet , it's so cold .

30:45

And now .

30:45

I don't complain because I don't get itchy

30:47

, because stuff's not dry , yeah . So

30:50

yeah , you win and you lose .

30:51

I think there's definitely a lot of time . Okay , so

30:54

we start off in like one pair of boots and then

30:56

we change again and

30:58

it depends on , like , are we squatting that day

31:00

because we're going to be planting , are we

31:02

? You know , what are we doing ? You

31:05

know , there's definitely a lot of fun

31:07

. There's coveralls , there's the

31:09

windbreaker

31:12

jacket thing those

31:17

um a lot of vests , A lot of

31:19

vests .

31:20

Yeah , During the winter all the layers we can get .

31:22

Oh my gosh and thank God for bibs and

31:25

, honestly , me .

31:25

And here , all the time , vests

31:27

, bare paws , bare paws are coming out

31:29

. Yep , bare paw season . Yeah , for sure

31:32

, oog season , I guess .

31:34

It's that warm . You just got

31:36

to figure out how to stay warm , I

31:39

don't know . And in the summer ? Well

31:42

, if we could be naked , we would yeah . That's

31:45

a wild side of wildliness . No , I'm kidding .

31:48

Yeah , there are some mornings that it's

31:51

hot . Yeah , I don't know how the girls do

31:53

it , but it gets

31:55

warm .

31:56

Well , and it's not just the

31:58

heat , sometimes

32:01

it's just so thick , yeah , like the humidity

32:03

One morning .

32:04

I'll never forget it . Kenley and I were standing in the

32:06

water spigot and you could

32:08

literally see it was foggy because

32:10

it was so humid and you could literally see

32:12

it moving . I looked at Kenley and he was like how

32:14

does it feel to breathe underwater

32:16

? She was like I

32:19

can barely move . I

32:22

was like , yeah , I feel like I'm suffocating , and we were

32:24

fine , like we made it through .

32:27

Well , ok , so let's talk about . Ok , you're

32:29

hot , You're sweaty , it's

32:32

super thick . How many times a day

32:34

do you have to put on deodorant ?

32:36

Yeah , too many yeah .

32:39

Like and everybody's like , oh , use natural deodorant

32:41

. And I'm like that's going to be bug repellent

32:43

as well , because homegirl is going to sweat . Yeah

32:46

, but it's hard

32:48

, it's .

32:49

I don't know Deodorant's got to put in the work and regular

32:51

women's deodorant , the natural deodorant . No

32:54

matter what deodorant you pick out , it's not doing enough

32:56

. No .

32:58

No , especially if you're trying to be natural

33:00

and healthy and all that kind of stuff , I don't

33:02

know . Sometimes it's hard , it's

33:04

so hard .

33:05

Yeah , you got to pick your battles , mm-hmm .

33:09

Yeah , and do you wear shorts because you're hot

33:11

, but then everything's itchy and scratchy and

33:13

you . And your thighs chafed

33:16

, yeah .

33:17

Honestly . That's why I have my coveralls in the morning dill .

33:19

Yeah .

33:19

Because it hurts , yeah , like , and

33:22

I can only wear my leggings .

33:23

I mean it's a roll , and then they

33:25

stretch out .

33:26

You're going to do that long drink . Yeah

33:29

, yeah , nope , nope , nope , nope . So

33:31

lots of boots , lots of extra tuffs

33:33

, and then we switch , and then partway

33:36

through the day I feel like , well , I always end up

33:38

in my keens , but everybody else ends up in

33:40

sneakers , or something else they do

33:42

? Yeah , you remember a lot . Yep , yep

33:45

, yep , yep . It's crazy , crazy , crazy

33:47

, crazy . But well

33:49

, I guess if I had a boat and I was

33:51

paddling through the flowers and we had a wedding

33:53

due to that weekend , I would

33:55

have to say that I would

33:57

. So we're part of

33:59

a flower consortium , a

34:02

local group of other flower growers

34:04

, that if we needed to , we could reach out

34:06

to them , and

34:08

if push came to shove , I would definitely . I

34:11

would never want to let anybody down , so we

34:13

would use our wholesale license . That

34:16

would be emergency cases . Yeah

34:18

, absolutely For sure

34:20

.

34:20

But yeah , awesome sauce

34:22

. All right , guys , pray for us because the weather's

34:25

weird . Yeah , we're trying .

34:28

The weather is wow . We're

34:31

out here in the slums .

34:36

With the worms , yeah , and the mud

34:38

and the ganks of frogs . Oh

34:41

my god and the crickets . What is

34:43

with the crickets ?

34:46

You hear it ?

34:46

Yeah , I got in a box that

34:48

was outside overnight and they got in the cracks

34:50

and I opened them up

34:53

in here and then they were in here and there were two

34:55

large crickets and they have since

34:57

then declared resonance .

35:00
