Hello and welcome to the Wildly Native
0:22
podcast , also known as
0:24
the flower files , where you're going
0:26
to hear me , Liza , Lizzy,
0:29
and Amber all chat
0:31
about the realities of being a flower
0:34
farmer , a florist
0:36
, wedding install and
0:38
everything that kind of goes with
0:40
that .
0:40
Yeah , a driver that tries to beat traffic
0:42
on a Saturday . A
0:45
floor sweeper , a dig in the dirt , human
0:48
seed people we
0:50
are energized by
0:52
the sun .
0:55
A lot of the times , I feel like people don't understand
0:58
what we do . So we started this podcast
1:00
so we could actually talk about
1:02
what it means to be a
1:04
flower farmer , florist because
1:06
a lot of the times , let's face it , a
1:09
lot of people are either a farmer or
1:11
they're the florist .
1:13
Well , I feel like a lot of people when you think of a flower farmer
1:15
, at least before , when we started and I don't know if it's just
1:17
because that was our world that
1:19
we were kind of already in like
1:21
from the ag realm but I was sort of like
1:23
Floret , is that what you
1:25
said ? Wisconsin or something ? No , wisconsin , washington
1:27
, somewhere cold . Yeah , somewhere cold . Yeah
1:30
, somewhere cold .
1:30
And slow and amazing .
1:34
But I guess you kind of think that in a very
1:36
typical way , like you have your florist , where
1:39
they put stuff together , or you have your flower
1:41
farmer where it's , you
1:44
go through wholesale and you do all the things
1:46
Florid is more of like educator , I
1:48
feel like nothing
1:51
that's a bad thing , but everybody has their own
1:53
perspectives and all that . But you know
1:55
, we do a little bit of everything and
1:58
I'm standing or sitting at
2:00
a counter with oranges
2:02
because we're trying to figure out stuff with crafts , a
2:04
vase that has flowers in it that are extra
2:07
pieces from building bouquets . We've got dried
2:09
stuff and wreaths and stuff
2:12
sitting on top of the fridge like curly willow that's
2:14
dried and a ton of
2:16
arrangements behind me .
2:17
But if you open the fridge , you're going to find all
2:19
of our seeds that have to be cold stratified
2:22
so that they can germinate and grow
2:24
correctly . You open our cupboards and
2:26
you find our warm season seeds .
2:27
And tissue paper for boxes for packaging
2:29
.
2:31
So we're a little bit of everything and
2:35
we get a lot of questions about what
2:37
the heck do we actually do . So
2:39
we wanted to start this podcast to answer those
2:41
questions . Have some guests come
2:43
in and talk about everything from
2:45
soup to nuts , from
2:48
what is it like being the florist
2:50
, what is it like being the farmer and
2:53
what do we do ? That's a little bit different
2:56
in style and putting things together
2:58
.
2:59
How do we stay up with the trends
3:01
? How do we get
3:03
our name out there ?
3:04
How do we function in all
3:06
these different outlets and
3:09
work with other people , because we are a customer
3:11
service , like industry
3:14
, like we're in that , like weddings , even
3:17
in COVID , like still didn't stop
3:19
. To an extent they slowed down , don't get me wrong
3:21
, but they were still . They
3:23
were still happening .
3:25
They were still a thing , and I think I
3:27
think there's a couple misconceptions that
3:29
we want to clarify too is
3:32
if somebody says , oh , you're
3:34
a farmer florist , that means you've
3:36
got , like you know , handfuls of zinnias
3:38
and all of that kind of stuff and it's like , yes
3:41
, we do grow zinnias , but we also
3:43
grow a lot of the flowers that are
3:45
used in weddings Lysianthus
3:47
, dianthus , larkspur
3:50
, delphinium , stock
3:53
and Eryngium I mean , we can go through and list
3:55
all of the things . We have about
3:57
300 feet of eucalyptus Probably
4:01
my favorite place to be on the farm , unless
4:04
we cut it for hours and hours and the smell
4:06
is like embedded in my fingers and literally
4:09
wakes me at two o'clock in the morning because it still
4:11
stinks .
4:12
Yeah , because it's all vapor rub like times ten
4:15
, but I
4:17
feel like working with other people too , like we
4:19
have to like know , what's
4:21
edible , what's not . We've had chefs come
4:23
to us . We've had cake people
4:25
come to us and we've had to tell them , because they come
4:28
in and shop out of our buckets technically
4:30
, and then we've got to tell them like hey
4:32
, that won't last or that's not sturdy enough
4:35
or hey , they look at the picture and
4:37
we say hmm, ranunculus .
4:38
Nope , that makes your lips tingle , yeah . Or clearly
4:40
that was a styled-shoot .
4:41
Yeah , not like an actual
4:44
thing . So
4:46
it's . It's been interesting over the past
4:48
couple of years to see how we're changing
4:51
and people that we've met
4:53
and how people offer services
4:55
to others , and how our customers
4:57
are now telling their friends who
4:59
are getting married and their moms and their
5:02
daughters , and god only knows
5:04
like word of mouth goes a long way and you know
5:06
, we had a phone call today and say that oh yeah , you
5:08
did this one girl's wedding and I haven't seen
5:10
her in years . But I was scrolling on your Instagram
5:12
and it's just , it's so
5:15
like it's such a small world and all the things and
5:17
I was like , yeah , it's , it's weird
5:19
, but it happens .
5:22
So back in the very beginning , how
5:24
did we get started with Wildly Native ? What
5:26
did that look like ?
5:28
So originally it
5:30
looked like a what I thought
5:32
was going to be like this amazing
5:34
, amazing section
5:36
of field . I was so excited I placed the order
5:39
. I had like 1000 seeds . We were going to do all of
5:41
the things . We were experimenting with different types
5:43
of covers , so we didn't
5:45
have to pull weeds no hoop houses
5:47
, yet no green houses . It was
5:49
like the imprint of
5:51
somebody's living room space . Yeah
5:53
, I was like this is gonna be great . And
5:56
I distinctly remember standing there
5:58
the one day going I don't need a thousand
6:00
seeds , I need a thousand of each
6:03
variety of seeds .
6:06
And now we've far exceeded that .
6:08
Yeah , lots and lots of thousands of seeds
6:10
, but I started off with just wanting
6:12
to grow flowers and I
6:15
am incredibly lucky that Lizzie
6:17
is my daughter and Amber's
6:20
my adopted daughter . Lizzie
6:22
is my daughter and she is very
6:25
artistic and creative and I
6:28
love the dirt , I love the outside , I
6:30
love everything about the growing
6:32
side and she has
6:34
that artistic eye so she's able to
6:36
take what we grow and make it pretty
6:38
and Amber can
6:40
live in both worlds , thank God
6:42
. And she kind of grounds us sometimes
6:44
too A lot of our .
6:46
People live in both worlds . Honestly , we have a good
6:49
balance of hey
6:52
you do this or hey you do this , or hey I need help , or
6:54
Kenley needs people out in the field , or we all go cutting
6:56
the morning or we're in here late at night
6:58
and Amber's putting greens together or corsages
7:01
and along the way , like I'm still learning
7:03
, like what's easier for what we do , like a corsage
7:06
that we did two years ago does not look like what
7:08
we do now , and not
7:11
that we want to be fast and process stuff
7:13
, but what's the quickest and easiest
7:15
and the best way that they look and
7:19
what's comfortable .
7:20
The business has grown and we have to be more efficient
7:23
.
7:25
We're gonna talk about those growing pains and we're gonna talk
7:27
about the things behind the scenes and I'm
7:29
gonna be honest , in the struggles I
7:32
mean it's pretty and
7:34
it's amazing and it's fine .
7:35
After After it's not pretty
7:37
in the barn, but man .
7:39
There's lots of things that we've
7:42
learned and grown and
7:44
cried and frustrated .
7:46
The amount of times that I've cried in here , both
7:50
with personal life and work
7:52
life .
7:54
All of it , all of it , all of it , all of it . So our
7:56
audience , our audience , is anyone
7:58
who's a flower enthusiast , from
8:01
somebody who's a home gardener to
8:03
somebody who just is a flower enthusiast
8:06
, to somebody who wants to start a flower
8:08
farm , to somebody who wants to learn more
8:10
about the floral world , to somebody
8:12
who wants to learn about the wedding world . Everybody
8:15
and anybody . This podcast is for
8:17
everybody .
8:18
We very thankfully have taken in some
8:20
of our brides to actually work with us
8:22
. So it's the best job interview
8:25
ever and you'll
8:27
have a chance to actually
8:29
hear her on
8:32
one of the podcasts as well . Miss Sammie
8:34
Love
8:36
her . You'll hear
8:38
why .
8:40
When you listen , but
8:42
we have a large variety of guests
8:45
with so many different
8:47
backgrounds .
8:48
Vendors and jobs and education
8:51
and time and experience and
8:53
people that are off the wall and
8:55
people that are super down to earth
8:57
and chill and are just that's
9:00
all of it .
9:01
Yeah , yeah , our podcast is
9:03
for everybody . So in
9:05
you guys getting to know us and
9:08
understand us as a
9:10
family , and a little bit about us
9:12
, Amber we're going to put you on the spot first . So
9:16
what type of flower are you ? And
9:18
tell me three things that define who
9:20
you are as a person .
9:22
I would have to be a sunflower , 100%
9:24
agree .
9:27
AKA wedding invitation flowers .
9:30
And three things that make me tick are baseball
9:32
. I'm a huge Orioles fan go O's
9:35
and I
9:37
am a book enthusiast
9:39
and I love my dogs . My dogs
9:41
are my first children .
9:45
They are spoiled and pampered , squishy
9:48
things . Yeah , how
9:50
about you Honestly
9:53
, I'd probably say at the beach
9:55
, the gym and self care
9:58
, and I
10:00
would say flowers but it is my job so we
10:04
don't have to talk about that but like art and tattoos and
10:06
drawing and just just
10:08
being in that space , I don't get to be in
10:10
that world a whole lot because I'm in a floral design
10:12
world and then I'm burnout on
10:14
my right side of my brain for a little bit but
10:17
, and t hen my my flower
10:20
that I would choose would probably be . I've got two
10:22
, but seasonally or
10:25
location wise . My all
10:27
time favorite flower is a Plumeria smells
10:29
so good , so pretty , you
10:31
can barely use it in
10:35
a bouquet, I don't know how people use it , but it's so pretty . And
10:37
then Dahlia's from like home
10:39
, like here, love
10:41
them, one of my favorites , even though they stink a little
10:44
bit .
10:46
Two years ago we didn't grow them , and
10:48
it was just a twinkle in
10:50
our eyes that we were like we could try this
10:52
.
10:52
Yeah , I think we started with like 20 .
10:56
We're like okay , we did this , yeah
10:58
they were growing in crates behind hoops .
11:01
And we're like well , wow
11:03
, Wow , they did it .
11:07
Yeah , a lot has happened .
11:10
What about you madre ?
11:12
So I think for me , I
11:14
definitely tick with some peanut
11:17
butter ice cream . I
11:20
love to swim from
11:22
needing headspace and just needing a break
11:24
, I love to be in the water and
11:26
swim . I've really looked closely
11:29
at water for your buds so I can actually
11:31
listen to either other podcasts
11:33
or a book or something like that and
11:37
I don't know all things outside , I
11:39
would say or the three things
11:42
and peanut butter . So peanut butter and ice
11:44
cream , preferably together , and
11:47
my favorite flower isn't
11:49
really a flower . I would say that my favorite thing
11:51
that we grow and the thing that I
11:53
love the most is our eucalyptus . I
11:56
just don't know . You can touch it
11:58
, you can smell it , you can see it . It's just it
12:00
changes all through the season
12:03
.
12:03
And .
12:03
I'm so proud that it comes back every year
12:05
and we talked to it . I've sung to it .
12:09
We cut it down to almost nothing every year and it always
12:11
comes back .
12:13
And we give it all kinds of pep talks . So
12:15
that's a little bit about us . I'm really excited
12:17
to share all of this with everybody
12:21
and get feedback . Oh , yeah , stay
12:24
tuned and join us .
12:25
Yeah , and see what we have in store ? Yeah
12:27
, come tag along for the , for the
12:29
