Alternative Methods to a Healthier Life

Joel Green is the creator of the VEEP Nutrition System. Over the last 50 years, he has dedicated his life to researching and understanding health, nutrition, and anti-aging. He is a proponent of the keto diet and intermittent fasting, but more than that, he understands the connections between our ancestors and our modern dietary and health habits. By linking our genetics to eating patterns, he helps us see how to live our best lives and create healthy lifestyle choices.

In this episode of The FM Shift, Joel teaches us about the importance of properly treating obesity and how functional medicine practitioners can help themselves and their patients by following the ancient eating patterns of our ancient ancestors.

Treating Obesity

Cycles of the Body

Did you know that the body has more cycles than just the circadian rhythm? There’s a seven-day cycle, seasonal cycle, organ clocks and more. But what makes the biggest impact on our health and wellness?

The organ cycle.

Due to ancient genetics, our body goes through cycles that impact how our body stores and sheds fat and builds muscle. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors got used to having cycles of feast and famine, making their bodies adjust to both lifestyles.

When our ancestors were in a lean season, they were able to be more sedentary and rely on fat reserves to keep them healthy. However, as soon as an abundance of food was available, they were quick to feast, then begin exercising.

In our modern bodies, we get used to feasting nearly every while, while busy schedules and other factors make it difficult to make time for exercise. Without this important factor, our bodies hold on to fat more readily and lead to obesity.

However, with the right information, treating obesity can be easy and effective.

Intermittent Feasting

Today, intermittent fasting is a fad that many health-conscious people pursue. But did you know that intermittent feasting was one of the ways our ancestors kept in shape?

Because hunter-gatherers often found themselves in starvation mode, they were likely to feast intermittently. When food supplies were full, a feast was in order. Then, when supplies were lean, they would intermittently fast, allowing their bodies to go into starvation mode, which causes their adipocytes to shrink, resulting in weight loss and keeping them lean.

With most modern humans having consistent access to food supplies, the theory of intermittent fasting and feasting has lost its place. However, for those who understand the body’s cycles and want an alternative method to lose weight and create a lifestyle more similar to our ancient ancestors can be a great way to lose weight.
