"Market Melancholy" by Andrea Slavik. As an interdisciplinary artist and educator, Andrea Slavik seeks to challenge popular ideological practices and forms of representation active in Western culture. She holds an MA in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited in North America and Europe.
Current topics of engagement for works in progress include: speculative fiction, nuclear semiotics, queering/hacking TTRPG frameworks. She is currently based out of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This work, "Market Melancholy", is an amateur and improvised attempt at the sonification of Tesla stock data between March 1, 2020 to March 5, 2021. The pitch of a deathwatch beetle's knocks changes to indicate the market's highs and lows in this speculative science fiction.
Slavik took a conceptual approach to decay, likening an infestation of a structure to the temporal economic frameworks of capitalist regulation. She describes her piece “Market Melancholy" as an amateur and improvised attempt at the sonification of Tesla stock data between March 1, 2020 to March 5, 2021. The pitch of a deathwatch beetle's knocks changes to indicate the market's highs and lows. Her project condenses a trajectory of hyperpresent moments, congealing the mediated information of stock market into what she calls “a speculative science fiction”, sonically mapping the self-destructive degrees of perpetual capitalism.
