talking about what is true Christianity.

What does it take to

be a Christian? And

I tell you this is something that a lot of people

think they've got nailed down and yet

when you look at scripture there

are some things that Jesus said in scripture

that are contrary to the

way that true Christianity is

presented today. And so I

gave an introduction to this yesterday. I'm going to

talk about it again today. I've got this little

book entitled The New You which the first half

of this book is talking about

what it means to be born again, become

a new person. The second half of this

book is the Holy Spirit and it'll talk

about what is the baptism of the Holy

Spirit, include speaking in tongues and things like

this. And we've given away

to people all over the world. And

But I tell you it's absolutely essential

And yesterday I was using this passage out

of John chapter 8 and

in verse 30 it says, and as He

spake these words, talking about Jesus, as He

spake these words, many believed on Him. went

on to say in verse 31, then

said Jesus to those Jews which believed

on him, if you

continue in my word, then

are you my disciples indeed, and

you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you

free. He was saying

it's not enough just to believe that

Jesus was the Messiah. You

have to do more than just believe that he

was the Messiah. You have to do more than

just believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

The scripture says in James chapter two verse 19,

you believe that there's one God, you

do well, the devils also believe and

2:36

tremble. But won't you know, O

vain man, that faith without works is dead?

That's about as clear as you can make it,

that you have to do more than the devil

has done. You have to do more than just

acknowledge that God exists or even acknowledge that Jesus

is the Son of God. You have to

commit yourself. There has to be action

on your part. And

so this is what Jesus said. If you

continue in my word, then you will truly

be a disciple. Boy,

there is so much I could say about this.

You know, let me read another passage of scripture

to you. This is over in Matthew chapter 28.

And this is the last thing

that Jesus said to his disciples

before he was received up into

heaven. It's often called the Great

Commission. But in Matthew chapter 28, verse

19, it says, go

ye therefore and teach all nations. If

you look this up in any of

the modern translations, it'll say go and

make disciples because the word

for teach there is to talk about,

make a disciple is what it's talking about.

So it's say go therefore and teach all

nations or make disciples, baptizing

them in the name of the Father and

of the Son and of the Holy Ghost,

teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I

have commanded you and lo, I am with

you always, even unto the end of

the day. the world, amen.

And so Jesus said not to

go and make converts, but to

go and make disciples, teaching

them to observe all things. Did

you know somewhere down the line, I don't

know how it happened, but people have changed

what we call the gospel. And

there are many people that say, well,

4:21

the gospel is just telling people about

4:23

heaven and hell and that you have

4:25

to accept Jesus and make him your

4:27

savior to get into heaven. Now that's

4:29

the gospel. Now beyond that, you can

4:31

talk about prosperity. You can talk about

4:33

God healing. You can talk about God

4:36

giving you peace and

4:38

solving marriages, problems

4:40

in marriage and dealing with your children and

4:42

all of these other things, but that's not

4:44

the gospel. The gospel is

4:46

telling people just about that

4:48

they are sinners and that

4:50

they've got to repent or else turn

4:53

or burn heaven or hell, and

4:55

you've got to make a decision right now. Well,

4:58

I believe that those things are involved in it.

Yes, there is a heaven and yes, there is

5:02

a hell and that we

5:05

deserve judgment and Jesus took

5:07

our judgment so that if

5:09

we receive him, we can be born again.

I actually believe that that's a part of

5:15

the gospel, but specifically

5:17

the word gospel means good

5:19

news. Matter of fact,

5:21

I actually read one commentary that

5:23

they said that out of all of the

5:25

writings that we have in Greek from

5:28

back during the time of the Bible

5:30

that there was the Greek word, I

5:32

can't pronounce it, but it's translated gospel.

It was only used twice outside of

5:37

the Bible and the reason is because

5:39

it meant good news, but actually more

5:41

than just good news, it was nearly

5:44

too good to be true news. It

5:49

was such a superbly that people didn't

5:51

use that word very often because in

5:54

this fallen world, there's very little that's

5:56

nearly too good to be true, but

5:58

when it came to Jesus, They started

using this word all of the time

6:02

because this is exactly what Jesus did.

Yes, there's a heaven and yes, there's

6:07

a hell. And because of our sins,

every one of us deserved to go

6:11

to hell, but the nearly too good

6:13

to be true news is

that God himself became

a man. And

6:20

he lived for 33 years on this

6:22

earth and suffered temptation in all of

6:24

the things that we are subject to,

6:27

but he did it as a

6:29

sinless person. And then he offered

6:32

himself to God as a sacrifice.

And all of God's judgment, all

6:37

of God's judgment, not some of

6:39

it, all of God's judgment against

6:42

mankind's sins came

6:45

upon Jesus, John 12, verse 32. And

when that happened, all you have to

6:52

do is just believe that

6:54

Jesus took your sins and

6:57

you have to believe and receive

6:59

his grace and you access

it by faith. I quoted that verse

yesterday, Romans 5, too, that we have

access by faith into this grace wherein

we stand. Grace is what God

did for us through Jesus, but

it doesn't just automatically work in

7:14

our behalf. You can make

void the grace of God. You can make

7:18

it in vain is what Paul said in

7:21

Galatians chapter two, verse 21, 1

Corinthians chapter 15. Paul said, and

the grace that was bestowed upon me was not

in vain. Did you know God

by grace has provided for

7:33

every single person's salvation, but

7:35

you've got to access that grace

7:37

by faith. Grace is what God

7:39

does. Faith is our positive response

7:41

to God's grace, and it's how

7:43

you reach out and take it.

You know, when I was just eight years old,

I remember being in vacation Bible school

in the Baptist church, and we

7:54

had like 600 kids in

7:57

this vacation Bible school. The auditorium

is full, and they marched us

in according to the classes that we

8:03

were in. Normally I sat

8:05

on the second row. My

8:07

family were like skunks. We had

8:09

our own pew, amen,

8:12

in church. I mean, this was our

8:14

pew. Nobody sat there. That was our

8:16

place. And it was right on the

8:18

front. But when I came in with

8:20

all of these other kids into vacation

8:23

Bible school, they sat me on the

8:25

very back row. And that's

8:27

where I was sitting. So this man stood up. He

8:29

took a dollar and he held this dollar up. And

8:31

he said, I'll give this dollar bill to the first

8:33

kid that comes up here and takes it. Did you

8:35

know back when I was eight years old, a dollar

8:37

was a lot of money. And man,

8:40

everybody wanted it. And I

8:42

thought of all times to be sitting

8:44

on the back row. This was just

8:46

terrible. And I mean, instantly he

8:48

had 20 or 30 kids around him just saying,

8:50

I want it, I want it. And he just

8:52

kept his hand in the air like this, like

8:55

he ignored everybody. And he kept saying, I'll give

8:57

this dollar bill to the first kid that comes

8:59

up here and takes it. He must've said that

three or four times. And I was

9:03

sitting there on the back row thinking, well, what's

9:05

he doing? Every one of those kids wants it.

9:08

And finally it dawned on my

9:11

lightning fast mind what he

9:13

was saying. And

9:15

so I got out from the back row,

9:17

ran all the way to the front, pushed

9:19

through all of those kids. This guy had

9:21

his arm up like this. And

9:23

I reached up and grabbed his arm and

9:25

climbed up his side. And I grabbed that

9:27

dollar bill out of his hands. And

9:30

did you know, he looked at me and he said,

9:32

now he looked at all those other kids and he

9:34

said, all of you wanted it, but that's the first

9:36

kid that came up here and took it. And

9:38

he was using this to illustrate that

9:41

God has provided salvation. He

9:43

has already paid for the sins of the

9:45

whole world, but you have to take it.

9:47

You can't just acknowledge it. All of those

9:49

kids wanted it, but they

9:51

didn't take it. There's a

9:53

lot of people. And I just assume

9:55

that if you're watching a Christian broadcast,

9:57

you have some interest in God. acknowledgment

that God exists, but

10:02

that doesn't mean that you have taken advantage

10:05

of His offer. Let

me go back to this passage of scripture

right here. It says that these people believed

on Him, but He said, if you continue

in my Word, then are you my

disciples indeed? Jesus in Matthew 28, 19, and 20 told

us to go and make disciples,

not to make converts, but

10:24

somewhere down the line, Christians got to

10:26

thinking all that counts is just getting

10:28

people born again so that when they

10:30

die, they'll go to Heaven. And because

10:32

of it, we haven't been teaching them

10:35

to observe all things. We haven't been

10:37

teaching them to be disciples. Did

10:39

you know it's hard to tell if a person

10:41

really has committed their life to the Lord by

10:44

just them saying that they're a Christian?

It's as simple as that because on

10:50

the cross, Jesus was hung in

10:52

between two thieves. One of the thieves

10:54

railed on Him. The other one defended

10:56

Him and finally said, Master, remember

10:59

me when you come into your kingdom.

That's all he said. He didn't pray

11:03

the sinner's prayer. He didn't have time to

11:05

go to church. He didn't go through any

11:08

sacraments. He didn't get water baptized. He just

11:10

said, remember me when you come into your

11:12

kingdom. And Jesus told him, today you will

11:14

be with me in paradise. That

11:17

man didn't go through any of the religious

11:19

things. So I'm not saying that you have

11:21

to do all of these things to earn

11:23

salvation. It's as simple as

11:26

that thief who just said,

11:28

remember me. It's

11:30

that simple, but you can't

11:32

tell whether a person is really meaning

11:34

that from their heart or not. But

11:37

you know what? You can tell if a person

11:39

is a disciple. I believe that there's

11:41

lots of people who maybe have made a commitment

11:44

to the Lord and are born again and headed

11:46

to heaven because they don't know what the word

11:48

says. And the Bible says you shall know the

11:50

truth and the truth shall make you free. If

11:53

you don't know the truth that God

11:55

has delivered us from sickness and from

11:57

poverty and from depression and And

12:00

that God will supply all these needs if

12:02

people have never heard those truths, which there's

12:04

a lot of denominations, Christian denominations today,

12:07

who have chosen to reject and to

12:09

say that those things don't happen today,

12:11

that that was only in Bible days,

12:13

that God doesn't heal today, God doesn't

12:15

prosper. You've got to go through grief

12:18

and sorrow and God puts problems on

12:20

you to make you better. If you're

12:22

listening to those lies, well then you

12:24

aren't going to have faith and so

12:27

you may not be experiencing any of

12:29

those victories. But

12:31

it's possible that you truly did make Jesus your

12:34

Lord and if you were to die right now,

12:36

you would go to heaven. But

12:39

you aren't experiencing the victory that

12:41

he purchased for us. Galatians chapter

12:43

one verse four says

12:45

that he came

12:47

to deliver us from this present evil

12:49

world, not just the one to come,

12:51

but in this world. Jesus even said

12:54

in Matthew chapter six, pray thy kingdom

12:56

come, thy will be done on earth

12:58

as it is in heaven. You

don't have to wait until heaven until you

13:03

start experiencing victory and power. You can pray

13:05

thy will be done on earth as

13:07

it is in heaven. In heaven there's not

13:10

sickness, there's not poverty, there's not depression, there's

13:12

not all of these things. You

13:14

can be delivered here to the degree

13:16

that you renew your mind and become

13:18

a disciple. But somewhere

13:20

down the line the church just chose to say,

13:23

well we aren't going to teach about

13:25

total victory and all these things. We're just going to

13:27

tell people how they can get born again and go

13:29

to heaven. And I'm sure that

13:31

there's some people that receive that and

13:33

are truly born again. If they were to die, they'd

13:35

go to be with the Lord. But

13:38

there's also a whole bunch of people that have

13:40

gone through the motions that I

13:42

don't believe truly possess a relationship

13:44

with God. Again, I'm not their

13:46

judge. I can't say, but

13:48

I can say this, that they

13:50

aren't disciples. You may not be

13:53

able to tell if you've truly been born again

13:55

because it's as simple as saying remember me when

13:57

you come into your kingdom. But

13:59

I can tell. if you're a disciple or not because a

14:01

disciple, it goes on to say, it says,

14:04

if you continue in my word, then are

14:06

you my disciples indeed? And that's not the

14:08

end of the sentence. It goes on to

14:10

say, and you shall know the truth. That's

14:13

a disciple is a person that continues in the

14:15

word until you know the truth and the truth

14:17

shall make you free. If

14:19

you are a disciple, it can be

14:21

manifest in your life. You

14:23

can see it in your life.

14:25

There will be freedom in your

14:28

life from depression, from sorrow, from

14:30

bitterness, from unforgiveness, from sickness, from

14:32

poverty and on and on. If

14:34

you're a disciple, you will

14:36

be manifesting this inner change

14:38

on the outside. And

14:41

so it's easy to tell if a person is

14:43

a disciple. It's not easy to tell if a

14:45

person is a convert or not. And the Lord

14:47

didn't tell us to go make converts. He told

14:49

us to make disciples. You

14:51

know, when I first got really turned on to the Lord,

14:54

I was raised in the Baptist church, and the

14:56

Baptist church was really pushing

14:59

evangelism. Matter of fact, in

15:01

our Baptist church, they very

15:03

seldom taught you anything except

15:05

how to be saved. I

15:08

remember many

15:10

sermons that they taught from Acts

15:12

chapter three about Peter and

15:14

John going into the temple at the hour of

15:16

prayer. And they found a man that was lame

15:18

from his mother's womb. And they said, silver and

15:20

gold have I none, but such as I have

15:22

give I thee. And they grabbed him by the

15:24

hand and lifted him up and

15:26

immediately his feet and ankle bones were received

15:28

strength. And he went walking and leaping and

15:30

praising God. I heard that message,

15:33

who knows how many times. And

15:36

then when I received the baptism of the

15:38

Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit started speaking

15:41

to me directly instead of just me listening

15:43

to other people, but I started receiving from

15:45

God, I was

15:47

absolutely shocked to read

15:50

Acts chapter three and think

15:52

that this man was physically

15:54

healed because it was

15:56

always spiritualized. They would say, we

15:58

were like lepers before. come

16:00

to the Lord, we were crippled and

16:02

we weren't able to get through life

16:04

and so when Jesus comes, he forgives

16:06

you of your sins and you begin

16:08

to now start being a new person.

16:10

They never took it and taught that

16:12

there was healing and that there was

16:14

power in the name of Jesus. They

16:16

related everything to only being born again.

16:19

And again, being born again is absolutely

16:21

essential. I'm not minimizing that, but I'm

16:23

saying that that's not what Jesus told

16:25

us to go preach. He didn't tell

16:27

us to go preach how people could

16:30

just be born again and then get

16:32

them saved and stuck. Man,

16:35

we were supposed to teach people how to

16:37

be disciples. And

16:39

so because that's what I was raised

16:41

in, when I had this encounter with the Lord, I

16:44

started going out and witnessing to everything

16:46

that moved. I grabbed people

16:48

coming out of a 7-11 and would witness to

16:50

people. I'd stand in restaurants and stand up and

16:53

pray loud enough for everybody in the restaurant to

16:55

hear my prayer and I'd tell them, you need

16:57

your food blessed too. I

16:59

was obnoxious, but that's the pattern

that I was given. And

17:05

anyway, a lot of things

17:07

happened, but I began to be frustrated because I

17:09

would pray with people, have them pray a prayer

17:12

with me and I'd go back and see them

17:14

six months later. And if I

17:16

hadn't been the one to pray with them,

17:18

there was zero evidence of any change in

17:20

their life. I think many of them

17:22

just prayed with me to get me off their back.

17:25

I don't think they were truly born again. And

17:28

then I came across a group that

17:30

was teaching discipleship and

17:33

they used two examples. One of

17:35

those examples, they said, if you

17:37

took a checkerboard, there's 64 squares on

17:39

a checkerboard. And if you put

17:41

a grain of rice on the first checkerboard

17:44

and then doubled it on the second and

17:46

then doubled it again and you doubled it

17:48

on every square. Did you know by the

17:50

time you got to the 64th Square

17:53

on that checkerboard, you would have enough

17:55

grains of rice to cover the continent

17:57

of India Two feet deep? And

people that it's impossible. If

18:03

you were only halfway their own the

18:05

sixty Third Square, it would double. That's.

The way that Disciple Sepia see if

you took a person that wasn't just

18:12

leading people to the lord and telling

18:14

them how to get saved which again,

I'm not saying that that's wrong and

I'm not minimizing that you must be

18:20

born again is what Jesus said. I'm

gonna get to those verses. I'm.

Not saying that we shouldn't emphasize people

18:27

being born again, but we shouldn't stop.

With that, we should go until they

18:32

become disciples. And. If

you took a person. That. Led

18:36

a thousand people a year to the

18:39

lord which be exceptional. I don't know

anybody who does that baby. Some of

18:43

these of angel is that have a

18:45

thousand people born again in one crusade

18:47

something but the average person I don't

18:49

know anybody leads the thousand people a

18:52

year to the war that would be

18:54

close to three people per day that

18:56

you would lead to the lord in

18:58

a year's time. but at the end

19:00

of say thirty five years. a typical

19:02

ministry for many ministers you have thirty

19:04

five thousand christians. Did. You know

19:07

that that would be a drop in the bucket

19:09

compared to the size of some of our larger

19:11

cities. We. Probably have more

19:13

than thirty five thousand christians.

In most of these larger cities and yet

19:18

is not change in our culture. But.

If you took the same person in instead

of just trying to get people born again.

19:25

And. Instead, he would lead a person

19:28

to the Lord and then shut

19:30

himself up with that person for

19:32

six months and make a disciple

19:34

alabama just teach them to observe

19:36

all things that Jesus it. And

19:38

if you put yourself into that

19:40

person at the end of six

19:42

months, you only have two disciples

19:44

versus five hundred. Converts,

19:46

By the other method. And. Then at

19:49

the end of one year each one of those

19:51

people see was after their now the sample. David

each go out late another person of the lord

and spent six months sapling them. At the end

of one year you'd only have four. Does. The

Apple versus the thousand Converts

by the Evangelism method. That.

If you just continue to double every six

months. did you know at the end of

twelve and a half year somewhere and twelve

on after thirteen years you would have Angel

as more. Than. The population

you did it through disciple

ship vs just making converts.

You. Know if he would think about it this way.

How many of you have seen somebody who claimed to

be a Christian. And yet

they did terrible things Matter fact. We've

seen ministers who claim to be a

spokesman for God, and then they wind

20:36

up committing adultery. They wind up stealing

money, going to prison. Things like this.

Because. Those people weren't through disciples,

they were only converts, but they weren't

20:46

observing all things a God told them.

They actually turn many people away from

20:50

the Lord. Many. Hours of

20:52

heard people say things like while I would have

20:54

been a Christian if I hadn't met one, That's

20:57

what Mahatma Gandhi said. He

20:59

was in exile in Africa and he

21:01

read the New testament and he actually

21:04

was convinced that Jesus was the cries

21:06

and he went to up at church.

21:09

To. Make a profession of his faith

21:11

but of course he was. you know

21:13

his complex and was dark. He was

21:15

black and he went to a white

21:17

church where these white missionaries would not

21:20

allow him into the church because he

21:22

was a different skin color. And.

21:24

He said I would have been a christian. If

21:27

I hadn't met one. And. He went

21:29

on to lead seven hundred and

21:31

fifty million Indians, the Independence. And.

21:34

He could have influence them for the

21:36

gospel, but he didn't because he met

21:38

some people who were probably christian. Maybe

21:40

they recon birds? But. They weren't

21:42

disciple. They weren't representing God correctly.

And. They turned a man who influence

21:47

seven hundred and fifty million people.

Against the law. That's

21:52

amazing. I'm telling you

we were we are call to be

21:57

disciples. Not. Just converts.

The and at the isn't just

22:02

having Christian. Who are rules

22:04

and regulations and code of conduct.

It's about a personal relationship with

the Lord which begins with becoming

22:11

a time bird where you make

22:13

your commitment to the Lord but

22:16

then you continue in the word

of God until you get free.

22:21

And if you haven't continued to the

22:23

point that you're free, it's possible that

22:25

your a convert. but you are not

22:27

a disciple. And the Lord called

22:29

us to be disciples. He says if you

22:32

continue in my word. Then. Are

22:34

you my disciples indeed and usual

22:36

know the truth. And. The truth

22:38

shall make you free. Praise.

God I know there's people watching this

that this. May have unsettled

you saw him because you think oh man I

thought I was at first and if you aren't
