Welcome to the Gratitude Diaries, a

0:04

production of My Heart Radio. Hi

0:10

I'm Janice Caplan. Thanks for joining

0:13

me for more practical advice on how to

0:15

be happier. Today's tip

0:18

be grateful for the things that don't

0:20

necessarily go right this holiday.

0:23

They may make the best stories

0:25

going forward. Most

0:27

of you are probably working really hard

0:29

right now in preparation for the holiday.

0:31

You're cooking, wrapping presents, and coming

0:34

up with all the new traditions we've talked

0:36

about to try to make it a special

0:38

and festive day. I hope

0:41

all goes wonderfully well and

0:43

that your holiday is imbued with the spirit

0:45

of joy. But if something

0:47

does go wrong, take heart, there's

0:50

a good chance you can be grateful

0:52

for that too. At big

0:54

holidays, and really any time, it's

0:57

sometimes the unexpected events or

0:59

even does asters that make for

1:01

the most memorable moments and the

1:03

happiest stories going forward. At

1:06

one holiday a few years ago, my

1:09

house was packed with friends and family

1:11

staying with us, and we were expecting

1:13

about twenty people for dinner. I

1:15

had a big turkey that I had properly

1:18

dry brine. I turned on

1:20

the oven that morning and it

1:23

didn't turn on My husband

1:25

is a pretty good mechanic, and so he said

1:27

not to worry. He fiddled and fussed,

1:29

but he couldn't get anything to happen with that

1:32

oven either. The oven remained

1:34

stone cold. Instead of

1:36

panicking, he went to the garage and pulled

1:38

out the grille that we had already stored

1:40

away for the winter. He dragged it out

1:43

to the deck and we all figured why

1:45

not. We cooked the whole

1:47

dinner on the grill. It was

1:49

such an adventure that instead of sitting

1:51

cozily inside, our guests

1:53

kept bundling up to go outside on

1:55

the deck and see what was happening. I

1:58

don't know how that grill survived

2:00

the gallons of broth we kept pouring

2:02

over the turkey to keep it moist as it

2:05

cooked. It wasn't the most

2:07

perfect meal, I'll admit, but it was

2:09

a joyous time. Everyone

2:11

laughed and gotten the spirit. We ended

2:14

up buying a new oven, and we're pretty

2:16

sure that when this one eventually gives out,

2:18

it will be on a holiday.

2:21

Lots of other people have survived

2:23

holiday meals gone wrong and lived

2:25

to laugh about it. The dog

2:28

eating the Christmas turkey seems

2:30

to happen more often than you'd think. I

2:33

heard about one German shepherd who

2:35

nod on the raw turkey breast before

2:37

it ever went in the oven, and

2:40

a more well behaved golden retriever

2:42

who waited until the cooked turkey was

2:44

cooling on the counter before he

2:47

indulged in his holiday meal. Neither

2:50

dog felt great afterwards, but they

2:52

did find as did the families. The

2:55

owners of the German shepherd supplemented

2:58

their dinner by ordering in pizza, and

3:00

the other family made a quick call for takeout

3:02

Chinese food. I expect

3:05

that for both of those families, the story

3:07

gets better and better as it gets

3:09

told and retold every year. Once

3:13

in the early years of our marriage, my

3:15

husband and I planned to celebrate our

3:17

wedding anniversary by going to a

3:19

fancy restaurant. We didn't have

3:21

a lot of money then, so this was a big occasion.

3:24

The reviews of the restaurant we picked all

3:26

talked about the amazing basket of cheese

3:29

and crude taise that were served when

3:31

you first sat down. We arrived

3:33

and got to our table, and the waiter brought

3:36

over a small plate with a couple

3:38

of stale looking rolls on

3:40

it. We asked about the famous

3:43

basket of crude tais, and he looked

3:45

at us officiously and said, we

3:47

don't serve crude tays after

3:50

eight pm. When

3:52

he walked away, my husband looked at me

3:54

and made a funny face. What

3:56

do you think happens to crude tays after

3:58

eight pm? He asked. I

4:00

started to giggle, and then we both

4:03

began laughing loudly. In

4:05

that fancy restaurant. The

4:07

food that night turned out to be kind of

4:09

disappointing, but after that ridiculous

4:11

start, we were happy to find the whole experience

4:14

just funny, and we reveled in how

4:16

upside down the night had become. We

4:19

kept repeating the line that we don't

4:21

serve crudy days after eight pm, and I

4:23

don't know why, but it made us laugh every

4:26

time. It's even become a long

4:28

standing joke in our marriage. Whenever

4:30

something doesn't go the way we want and

4:32

we need to cheer each other up, we repeat

4:35

it. All these years later. We're

4:38

not food ease by any means, but

4:40

I do think it's telling that one of our

4:42

happiest and most memorable anniversary

4:45

celebrations included bad

4:47

service and lousy food. Not

4:50

every holiday special event

4:53

or Christmas dinner turns out

4:55

the way you imagine. But sometimes

4:57

the unexpected, the problematic, the

5:00

frankly really annoying become

5:02

moments of happiness and gratitude for

5:04

the future. You're grateful

5:06

for the chance to laugh, let yourself,

5:09

be grateful for the chance to experience

5:11

something you didn't expect, and

5:13

be grateful simply to be with the people

5:16

who can understand and laugh with

5:18

you. So, with

5:20

Christmas coming right up, I wish

5:22

you a very joyous holiday,

5:25

a delicious meal, and perfect

5:27

presence to unwrap. But

5:29

whatever happens, know that

5:31

a positive spirit and gratitude

5:34

for the moment is what will make

5:36

the best day, the best holiday,

5:39

and the best memories of all. Merry

5:42

Christmas, Happy Holidays, and I

5:44

will see you next week. The
