It's interesting because it really kind of goes

0:02

back to this idea of using your influence

0:04

to benefit your followers. It's not about benefiting

0:06

you, it's about benefiting those people. And those

0:08

are kind of the key things you have

0:10

to do to get to that place of

0:13

benefiting your community. Welcome to the

0:15

Influencer Podcast. I'm your host, Julie

0:17

Solomon. If you found yourself

0:19

here, it means you are ready to unleash

0:21

the powerful visionary that lives inside you, turning

0:24

you into an authentic leader

0:26

who creates influence, impact, and

0:29

change. Let's get started.

0:31

Hello, friends, and welcome back to

0:33

another episode of the Influencer Podcast.

0:35

Today, our podcast features the amazing

0:37

Tyler McCall. He is an Instagram

0:39

marketing expert and business growth strategist,

0:41

and we have a very insightful

0:44

conversation with him today. We dive into

0:46

the power of building genuine connections on

0:48

Instagram, really emphasizing that quality over quantity

0:50

piece that we talk about a lot

0:52

here, and what I really love about

0:55

this podcast episode and really this conversation

0:57

is that Tyler shares his perspective on

0:59

the importance of going live, how to

1:01

do that in a way that doesn't

1:03

feel so intimidating, and really provides practical

1:06

tips for overcoming that fear. So you're

1:08

going to learn how to shift your

1:10

mindset, focus on your audience, and make

1:12

your content more meaningful. This is

1:14

a value and valuable packed episode

1:16

on how to leverage Instagram and

1:19

business growth for the long haul.

1:21

So you do not want to

1:23

miss this. Let's dive in with

1:25

our conversation with Tyler. Hello,

1:27

Tyler. It's so good to have you here today.

1:29

Oh my goodness. Thank you for having me. Yes.

1:32

So excited for our conversation. I know that

1:34

we have been social media friends for probably

1:36

a year now, so I'm so excited to

1:38

dive in. We'd love to start with the

1:40

first question. What does influence mean to you?

1:42

Oh my gosh. It's such a loaded question. I know. It's

1:44

me. For

1:47

me, I think influence means having impact,

1:50

and using that impact in a way

1:52

that is beneficial to

1:54

others. It's not

1:56

about fame. It's

1:59

not about being insta-fame. It's about being

2:01

impactful in those relationships and using that

2:03

to help other people. Great

2:06

answer. Well, I know that

2:08

where you really shine is by helping

2:11

your clients build raving fan bases on

2:13

Instagram and you really do focus on

2:15

quality followings and engagement over really the

2:17

size. Where you really shine

2:19

is using really relational marketing tactics,

2:22

including Instagram Stories, Instagram Live, the

2:24

DMs, all of that good stuff.

2:26

My first question for you is why

2:28

Instagram? Why were you intrigued

2:30

by Instagram? Why did you decide to

2:33

become kind of an expert in that

2:35

space? How do you view Instagram

2:37

in terms of growing all of our

2:39

businesses? Yeah. I have

2:41

been doing the social media thing

2:44

for what seems like ever now.

2:46

I've had profiles on every platform. I've hung

2:48

out on every platform that's existed, from

2:51

Instagram to Periscope to Vine

2:53

to Facebook, everything. At

2:55

the end of the day, it really came down to the

2:57

fact that on Instagram, I saw

3:00

the engagement that I feel like

3:02

we're so desperate for on social

3:04

media. I saw that

3:06

it happened really naturally and really

3:09

organically. That's why I

3:11

loved it so much. I know some

3:13

folks feel frustrated with Instagram nowadays. They

3:16

feel like they're having to do a lot of work

3:18

and a lot of force to make it work, but

3:20

I'm not seeing that as an issue or even as

3:22

a thing that's true anymore because

3:24

I think Instagram is

3:26

not about the photos. It's not about

3:28

having perfectly branded imagery or graphics or

3:31

any of those things. I think it's

3:33

about stories. If we go back to

3:36

why Instagram started and how it was

3:38

created as a platform, it was a

3:40

place for people to share images and

3:42

then share the story behind that image

3:44

or to share an image that represented

3:47

a moment in their life

3:49

or in their family or in their vacation

3:51

or whatever they're eating, whatever those things are,

3:53

it represented that moment of story. That's why

3:55

I really, really loved Instagram. It's

3:58

such an incredible platform for people to... kind

4:00

of come together around these shared stories and

4:02

shared ideas and then just start having conversations

4:04

with one another. That's why I love it.

4:07

That's why I spend all

4:09

probably too much time but all

4:11

of my time on Instagram. And

4:13

where do you see when you

4:15

say stories kind of how do

4:17

you see or where do you

4:20

see someone really convert in terms

4:22

of engagement and really connection by

4:24

sharing their story? Is there any

4:26

kind of story tactic or story

4:28

secret or story and not just

4:30

Instagram stories but just really creating

4:32

your online story that you can

4:34

share with us? Sure definitely. So

4:36

I think the first thing to

4:38

recognize is that as you are

4:40

creating content on really any platform

4:43

but especially I think on Instagram

4:45

this works well is to think about the

4:48

fact that it's not really about you. So

4:50

you have to do some of that work

4:52

of separating yourself from what you're

4:55

doing, separating yourself from who you're speaking

4:57

to, separating yourself from the content itself

4:59

because at the end of the day

5:02

what you're doing online is about

5:05

your followers. So I always

5:07

think of those kind of core things that

5:09

I'm trying to do on Instagram. I'm trying

5:11

to either inspire my community. I'm trying to

5:13

share a story that inspires them, that moves

5:15

them to action, that helps them get through

5:17

their day. I'm trying to show something valuable

5:21

and educational, something that they can implement in

5:23

their own lives or in their own business

5:25

or I'm trying to share something that is

5:27

about me but in sharing that about me

5:29

it's doing the work of

5:32

bringing them closer to me and what I'm

5:34

doing. So I think of those as really

5:36

informational pieces of content. How can I inform

5:38

my audience in a way that they better

5:41

understand me, they better understand who I am,

5:43

they better understand what I do and why

5:45

I do it. So it kind of demystifies

5:47

the whole idea of connecting with me or

5:49

working with me. So I

5:52

am doing something this year that I

5:54

have never done before and I want

5:56

you to join me for it. It

5:58

is a free five-day, brilliant, Brand Building

6:00

Bootcamp. Now all you have to do

6:02

is go to juliesalmon.net/bootcamp to get the

6:05

details. But I want to let you

6:07

know that if you are someone who

6:09

is already saying, you don't have the

6:11

time this year, you don't know the

6:14

best next step to take, or you

6:16

just need someone to hand you an

6:18

actionable game plan, this Brand Building Bootcamp

6:20

is for you. It is time to

6:23

re-clarify your brand strategy, remove content, overwhelm,

6:25

and create a sustainable business. And this

6:27

is what the Brand Building Bootcamp is

6:30

a lot about. Why I'm inviting you

6:32

to this free virtual event, I'm gonna

6:34

be showing you how to solidify your

6:36

strategy so that this year is finally

6:38

when you solidify your audience and revenue

6:40

without being drowned out by the noise

6:43

of every online marketer telling you that

6:45

their program, or their this or that

6:47

will solve your problems. During the free

6:49

five day Brand Building Bootcamp, you will

6:51

clarify your brand strategy and message, remove

6:53

the overwhelm of content creation so you

6:56

can monetize your brand and scale sustainably.

6:58

By the end of our time together,

7:00

you're gonna have a clear direction on your

7:02

content strategy for the rest of the year,

7:04

tools to increase your social media presence, and

7:06

an easy to implement brand growth strategy that

7:09

you can put into action immediately. Did share

7:11

some of these strategies last year in a

7:13

small session that I did, and there was

7:15

an incredible woman, Stacy Asis, who is a

7:17

digital creator, and this is what she said

7:19

about what I'm sharing with you during this

7:22

bootcamp. She said, Julie, I just wanted to

7:24

say that since your free trainings, I have

7:26

learned my unique value, figured out how I

7:28

wanted to niche down, and only two weeks

7:31

later, I have grown by almost 3,000 followers

7:33

and my engagement is out the

7:36

roof. Just hit the 10K mark,

7:38

I am already seeing crazy proof

7:40

that it works. I mean, do

7:42

we need to hear anything more?

7:44

Just go to juliesullman.net/bootcamp to save

7:46

your free seat and do it

7:49

soon because the bootcamp starts on

7:51

February 14th, yes, Valentine's Day,

7:53

my friends, and you will only be able to

7:55

get into it for the next couple of weeks,

7:57

so don't miss out. Start to shift

7:59

your focus. and start to focus

8:01

on your followers and how you

8:03

can benefit them instead of you and how

8:06

you can benefit your brand or your business,

8:08

it changes the whole dynamic of what you're

8:10

doing on Instagram and it makes the work

8:12

a lot more meaningful and I also think

8:14

it takes a lot of the pressure off

8:17

of it as well because it's not necessarily

8:19

about you being in the spotlight, it's about

8:21

shining that light back on the people who

8:23

have chosen to follow you and providing a

8:25

space for them to connect with one another

8:27

and connect with the ideas that you're sharing.

8:30

And I love what you said about allowing,

8:32

really creating a space for them to share

8:34

how are, you know, if

8:36

you have one tip or maybe it's

8:38

three tips, how can we better do

8:40

this as online content creators and as

8:42

influencers that are, you know, trying to

8:44

create a space and trying to grow

8:46

that space, how can we really get

8:49

people excited or inspired to want to

8:51

come to our story and want to

8:53

share that, you know, with their followers

8:55

because that's how essentially we're gonna grow.

8:57

Yes. Okay. Such a good question. So I think the

8:59

first thing is getting crystal clear

9:02

on who the heck you're even talking

9:04

to. I think it's really addressing this

9:06

unfortunate scarcity mentality that so many of

9:08

us have and that comes, you know,

9:11

from this belief that there's not enough,

9:13

you know, thinking there's not enough money,

9:15

there's not enough followers, there aren't enough

9:17

brand partnership, there's not enough sponsorship opportunities,

9:20

there's not enough to go around and

9:22

that's just not true, it's not true.

9:24

So if we get crystal clear on

9:26

who we're trying to speak to and

9:29

we start creating content in

9:31

a way that attracts those people

9:33

but more importantly repels the wrong people,

9:36

it makes doing the work of telling

9:38

story and also converting a follower to

9:40

a reader or a customer or

9:42

a potential brand partner even easier, even more easy

9:44

than it was before because we know who we're

9:46

talking to. So that's the first thing, get that

9:49

clarity around who they are and I'm a big

9:51

fan Julie of even going as far as to

9:53

like name them, put an age on them, talk

9:55

about where they're from, what they like to do

9:57

in their spare time, whether they watch Real Housewives

9:59

or Fan and their pump rules. The really important

10:01

things in life. So

10:04

I like to go as far as that getting crystal clear

10:06

on who they are. Then the next thing is getting really

10:09

clear on your objective on Instagram. So

10:11

what do you want to accomplish with

10:13

this account? And I think a lot

10:15

of folks go into doing social media

10:17

and really all the, the only reason

10:19

they're doing it is because they think

10:21

they should be doing it or because

10:23

they're supposed to be doing it or

10:25

because they listen to podcast episodes like this

10:28

and they're like, well, shoot, I have to

10:30

be on Instagram now. And they don't have

10:32

an understanding of what the clear goal is.

10:34

So for me, I'm always thinking as I'm

10:36

creating content, really these two core questions that

10:38

are driving this and helping me get clear on

10:40

this objective is what do I want my followers

10:43

to get out of this content? So how do

10:45

I want them to be better from this content

10:47

that I'm sharing? And then the second question is

10:49

what do I want them to do with this

10:51

content? What's the next step for them? What's the

10:54

action? Do I want them to comment on something?

10:56

Do I want them to slide into my DMS?

10:58

Do I want them to buy

11:00

my product? Do I want them to

11:02

buy someone else's product? So when you

11:04

start creating content and start showing up

11:06

on Instagram with that crystal clear objective

11:09

and that knowledge of who you're talking to, it

11:11

makes the content creation 1000 times

11:14

easier because there's no more guessing

11:18

about what you're doing. There's no more trying

11:21

to figure it out as you go along.

11:23

There's no more what I like to call

11:25

oh crap posting when you pick up your

11:27

phone and open Instagram and you say oh

11:29

crap I haven't posted in four days. Let

11:31

me find you know a perfect self and

11:33

you're a cute flat lay and slap a

11:35

caption on it and put it up on

11:37

Instagram just because I haven't posted, right? So

11:39

when you have that clarity of what you're

11:42

doing and who you're talking to, everything

11:44

else starts to fall in line. And then I

11:46

think the third piece of this

11:48

is the content strategy and making

11:50

sure that your content is high

11:52

quality, engaging, and focused like

11:55

I said before back on your followers.

11:57

How can you give them content that

11:59

they need? or that they will use

12:01

or that will benefit them in a positive way.

12:03

It's interesting because it really kind

12:05

of goes back to this idea of using

12:07

your influence to benefit your followers. It's not

12:10

about benefiting you, it's about benefiting those people

12:12

and those are kind of the key things

12:14

you have to do to get to that

12:16

place of benefiting your community. I love

12:19

that. That was a great explanation for sure.

12:21

I want to talk about challenges for a

12:23

moment because one that you mentioned to me

12:26

that you see as a challenge that I

12:28

know so many of my listeners see as

12:30

a challenge is being overlooked because you know

12:32

they may have a smaller following at the

12:34

time. So what are things that those who

12:37

are listening can do to kind of override

12:39

this and to still bring the right kind

12:41

of quality people in and not really letting

12:43

that fear or that lack of confidence about

12:46

the following number hold them back? Okay

12:48

such a good question and and I'm

12:50

a big fan of really not obsessing

12:52

over the number of followers and I

12:55

know there are you know a dozen

12:57

schools of thought on this idea

12:59

of the number of followers you have

13:01

or you should have or you need

13:03

to have. Here's the thing, your following

13:05

means nothing if they're not engaging with

13:08

your content. We're entering a space, a

13:10

time especially in the space of influence

13:12

and using influence and building influence where

13:14

brands and consumers are really soppy. They

13:16

know when they are being lied to

13:18

almost. If you have a hundred thousand

13:20

followers and you're not getting the number

13:22

of likes that should correlate with that

13:24

following, they know something's up, something's weird

13:26

there. So that's what I think about the

13:28

number of followers. It's not about the

13:31

quantity, it's about the quality. So if you were in

13:33

the space of feeling like you know what I don't

13:35

have enough followers, I wish I had more or

13:38

I'm going to get overlooked because of the

13:40

size of my following, I would put your

13:42

energy into the work of connecting with the

13:44

people who are already there. So this is

13:47

a conversation I have a lot with my

13:49

community where folks will ask me, do you

13:51

know an app that I can use to

13:53

see who has unfollowed me so I can

13:55

make sure I unfollow them? And

13:58

It's always such an interesting question. The to

14:00

me because people complain about follow and follow

14:02

strategies with go right back around and on

14:04

follow someone who on follow them in I

14:07

always tell them all of that effort in

14:09

all of that energy that you're putting into

14:11

something like that is one hundred percent wasted

14:13

when you could be putting that time into

14:15

going to your account. You don't need a

14:18

fancy have to do this, going to your

14:20

towel and looking at the people who are

14:22

consistently commenting on what you share, watching other

14:24

people who are always responding to your instagram

14:26

stories and having a conversation with them, following

14:29

them back to their. Accounts and showing them

14:31

a little bit a love on their

14:33

profile. Instead of worrying so much about how

14:35

you accumulate more and more and more

14:37

followers, think about how you can retain

14:39

the followers that you have and make that

14:41

relationship you have with them so much

14:43

more meaningful. Silks: When it comes time

14:45

to pitch your product or talk about

14:47

your service or to feature brand that he

14:50

partnered with, their question about buying send

14:52

you are buying something that you recommended

14:54

isn't whether or not they should do it.

14:56

It's where can I send my money.

14:58

How can I get my hands. On

15:00

this things because they trust you because

15:02

you know that relationship with them. And

15:04

I really think Julie. I think that

15:06

folks who have smaller followings and this

15:08

this time on Instagram. This is kind

15:10

of age of Instagram. I think they're

15:12

at an advantage. I think they're at

15:15

an advantage because they can connect more

15:17

deeply with the people who have chosen

15:19

to follow them and they can create

15:21

content directly for them. They don't have

15:23

to get lost in the shuffle of

15:25

trying to create tons of really amazing

15:27

and credible content all the time to

15:29

appease tens. Or hundreds of thousands of

15:31

followers and said look, you got five

15:33

thousand people following you and they're engaging

15:35

regularly. Heck, I would be envious of

15:37

having best. really loyal and engage five

15:40

thousand followers because I know they're going

15:42

to buy when I'm selling in. they're

15:44

gonna believe I have to say I

15:46

still trying to shouted to a huge

15:48

room with tens or hundreds of thousands

15:50

of people and not known if anyone's

15:52

even paying attention to what I'm sharing.

15:54

No. judgment that i was kind of shock

15:56

to when when i found out this

15:59

so many people that. They spend so

16:01

much time worrying about who's unfollowing them or

16:03

who's following them. I notice so and so

16:05

unfollowed me. I'm like, how did you? I

16:07

don't even know how to find like to

16:09

spend that amount of time. All that really

16:11

tells me because it's not coming from a

16:13

judgmental place, but really it's coming from a

16:15

place of like, I know that you have

16:17

the time to figure this out and you

16:19

have the time to grow and to make

16:21

your community thrive because you have the time

16:23

to do all this other stuff. If you

16:25

have the time to take time out of

16:27

your day to download some app or find

16:29

some website that pings you or lets you

16:32

know each time someone unfollows you and then

16:34

you have to take the time and the

16:36

action that's necessary to act upon that in

16:38

whatever way that you want to, then I

16:40

know that you have all the time that

16:43

you could ever need in the world to

16:45

use that time for positivity and like really

16:48

benefiting your growth long term. And so I

16:50

love that you mentioned that because I never

16:52

really knew how much of a

16:54

trap that can be for people and how lost

16:56

people can get into that kind of cycle of

16:58

like, this person unfollowed me or this, you know,

17:00

it's just was so interesting to me to know

17:03

that and to try to reverse that thought process

17:05

a little bit and to

17:07

direct them back to, well, you can't control

17:09

that, right? So what can you control to

17:11

some degree? And let's focus on that.

17:13

Yeah, exactly. I love that. And I think

17:16

it's just that reminder that at the end

17:18

of the day, anyone unfollowing you, anyone unsubscribing

17:20

from your mailing list, anyone who's unhappy with

17:22

your product or service, whatever, maybe that literally

17:24

has nothing to do with you. It has

17:28

nothing to do with you. It has everything

17:30

to do with them and however you're showing

17:32

up to them, and however they're perceiving that

17:34

and taking that that has everything to do

17:36

with them. So why put that energy and

17:38

effort into worrying about them? They're gone. Let

17:40

them be gone and focus on the folks

17:42

who are sticking around and then go find

17:44

some more people like the people who are

17:46

actively engaging with you. Totally. I love

17:48

that. Thank you for sharing all of

17:51

that for sure. So I want

17:53

to talk a little bit or share more about something that

17:55

you had mentioned to me about, you know, I was asking

17:57

you kind of what you see as a trend coming up.

18:00

for the future of Instagram in particular.

18:02

And you said the idea of the

18:04

expiring video, right? So namely Instagram Stories.

18:07

And that Instagram Stories is already the

18:09

most popular feature within the platform. And

18:11

you believe that it's going to change

18:13

Instagram as we know it and really

18:15

failing to use it effectively and starting

18:17

to use it means that you're gonna

18:20

be left behind. So I would love

18:22

for you to share more about this

18:24

and really kind of touch on that

18:26

idea because when someone doesn't feel super

18:28

comfortable or confident on a video

18:30

platform, they're probably gonna shy away from

18:33

this. What can those people do? Okay, I'm

18:35

so glad you brought this up because I am

18:37

a huge fan of Instagram

18:39

Stories. I try and show up there

18:41

every single day and I've seen it

18:43

change the way I do business. It's

18:45

literally changed how I show up online.

18:48

And it's honestly so much of the

18:50

success that I'm so grateful for in

18:52

my business. It's because of Instagram Stories.

18:54

So I think the first thing to

18:56

look at is that the stats already

18:58

show us that a majority of

19:01

Instagram users are using Instagram Stories

19:03

every single day. So that's proven. Of the

19:05

people who are on the app every day, more

19:07

than half are on Instagram

19:10

Stories. The other key stat here

19:12

is that Instagram is now telling

19:14

us that users are spending on

19:16

average 10 minutes more per day

19:18

on Instagram using Instagram Stories

19:20

than they were before Instagram Stories

19:22

existed. And the younger you get

19:24

with the demographics on Instagram, the

19:27

more time they're spending on the

19:29

platform consuming and creating Instagram Stories.

19:31

I think it's already changed Instagram.

19:33

I think it's already changed how

19:35

we create content, but more importantly,

19:37

it's changed how our followers

19:40

consume content. This is where

19:42

it's really important because for us, folks who are

19:44

listening to this podcast and who

19:47

are in this space of online business

19:49

or having influence or building a blog

19:51

or a brand on the internet, we

19:53

are content creators. First thing that is

19:55

our main objective is to create content

19:58

a lot of times in this. space,

20:00

we get too stuck up, we get too hung

20:02

up on the content consumption. We think, oh, I

20:04

need to be consuming content to say inspire it

20:06

or I need to keep an eye on what

20:08

my competitors are doing or I need to consume

20:11

all of this so I know what to do.

20:13

But that's not your top priority. Your top priority

20:15

is to create content for your community. Hey

20:18

friends, as we bid farewell to another incredible

20:20

year and gear up for a fresh start,

20:22

I wanted to share a game changer that

20:25

has been pivotal in my journey this year

20:27

and that is Cartra. If you are anything

20:29

like me, you know that juggling a million

20:31

things is not always easy to do. And

20:34

this is where Cartra comes in. It is

20:36

not just an all in one business platform,

20:38

but really a lifeline for turning all of

20:41

your passions into profit. No more logging in

20:43

and out of the different platforms. Cartra houses

20:45

everything that you need from pages to funnels

20:48

to your courses, your webinars, your auto

20:50

responders, checkouts, all neatly packaged for one

20:52

affordable price. And the real magic is

20:55

the automation. It's like having a dedicated

20:57

team working tirelessly for you, attracting

20:59

new customers, boosting their value and keeping

21:01

them hooked all on autopilot. Now here's

21:04

the kicker. Cartra just doesn't leave you

21:06

hanging. It's got your back with

21:08

ready to launch campaigns that you can

21:10

kickstart in minutes, giving you more time

21:13

to focus on what truly matters. So

21:15

if you're ready to make 2024 your

21:18

year, just visit juliesolomon.net Cartra

21:20

and snag a free 30

21:22

day trial using the code

21:24

influencer. That's K A R

21:26

T R A juliesolomon.net/Cartra. Trust

21:28

me, it's a game changer

21:30

and you're going to be

21:32

able to elevate your game

21:34

because your success is worth

21:36

it. Since

21:39

I am all about habits and routines and

21:41

goals for the new year, let's talk about

21:43

healthy eating. Now, obviously this is a hot

21:45

topic for so many of us right now

21:47

because I know that so many people are

21:49

looking to revamp their eating habits in the

21:51

new year, but I think so often we

21:53

fall short because of a few things. One,

21:56

it can be really time consuming to cook

21:58

fresh meals every day, especially as a Two,

22:00

it can be time consuming and difficult to

22:02

prepare and go to the grocery store and

22:04

just have all the ingredients that we need

22:06

for the week. And so if you're anything

22:08

like me, what tends to happen is that

22:10

we fall back on old habits of just

22:12

ordering out all of our meals or snacking

22:14

around meals or just grabbing whatever we find

22:16

in a pantry and not really giving our

22:18

bodies the nourishment that we need. That's a

22:21

really simple solution that I have found for

22:23

the new year is HelloFresh. Whether you want

22:25

to save money, eat better, or stress less,

22:28

HelloFresh is here to help you do all

22:30

three. Imagine having farm fresh ingredients

22:32

and chef crafted recipes delivered to

22:34

your doorstep, no grocery store chaos.

22:36

Also, what I love about HelloFresh

22:38

is that everything comes pre-portioned right

22:40

to your doorstep, which is a

22:43

huge perk for me because of

22:45

the time savings and there's less

22:47

hassle and less wasted food. Another

22:49

perk with me because with two small kids in the

22:51

house, it is so easy for us to waste food

22:54

and that drives me crazy. And even if there are

22:56

nights where you barely have any time to cook, what

22:58

you can do is check out their lineup of

23:00

15-minute recipes, which are amazing. These are

23:03

great for those nights when you're just

23:05

trying to catch up on all the

23:07

duties and you just need a healthy

23:09

but quick option. I made a really

23:11

good chicken dish the other night and

23:14

they also have some good vegan options.

23:16

My husband is also gluten free, so

23:18

they have something for everybody regardless of

23:20

what your dietary preferences may be. And

23:23

this is huge for so many of

23:25

us as I know. Now here is

23:27

the big news. HelloFresh understands the breakfast

23:29

game all

23:35

subscribers free breakfast for life. Yes,

23:38

you heard it right. A free

23:40

breakfast item with every single delivery.

23:42

I mean, who wouldn't want to

23:44

wake up to that? We all

23:46

know the importance of breakfast and

23:48

getting that protein fix in the

23:50

morning. And the fact that I

23:52

just don't have to think about

23:54

it just made HelloFresh a no

23:56

brainer for me this year. So

23:58

that means you will enjoy a

24:00

totally free breakfast item with every

24:02

single HelloFresh delivery. So go to

24:04

hellofresh.com/influencer free. slash

24:18

24:20

24:22

and find out why HelloFresh

24:24

is America's number one meal

24:26

kit. I

24:29

can't believe that it has taken me 30 years to

24:32

discover the incredible relief provided by

24:34

today's podcast sponsor, Jovi. When it

24:36

comes to tackling the pain from

24:39

period cramps, Jovi is my go-to

24:41

solution. Why? Because it's

24:43

a 100% drug-free patch providing not

24:45

only relief from menstrual cramps, but

24:47

so much more. Jovi is a

24:49

reusable, flexible patch designed to ease

24:51

the impact of pain from virtually

24:53

anywhere you're feeling it throughout every

24:55

phase of your cycle. Now, what's

24:57

even more amazing is that you

25:00

purchased Jovi once and enjoy an

25:02

entire year of uninterrupted release. Now,

25:04

I love Jovi because I can

25:06

just place the patch and power

25:08

through my period without the hassle

25:10

of refills or wires. And I

25:13

personally know the founder of Jovi

25:15

who is not only passionate about

25:17

creating innovative solutions but it's also

25:19

a fierce advocate for female founders

25:21

and creators. Jovi has helped tens

25:24

of thousands of women thrive through

25:26

every day of their cycles. If

25:28

you want to become one of

25:30

them, head to meetjovi.com/influencer and

25:32

use code influencer for 40% off your order.

25:36

That's right, 40% off. Once

25:38

25:41

backslash influencer for 40% off.

25:44

And make sure you use my promo code

25:46

influencer so they know that I sent you.

25:50

So as a content creator, you

25:52

have to stay on top of these

25:54

trends and we've seen more users than

25:56

ever before on Instagram stories. We've seen

25:58

it's more people are. spending time on

26:01

the platform because of Instagram stories.

26:03

We've seen lately Julie I don't

26:05

know if you've noticed this but

26:07

more ads on Instagram stories than

26:09

ever before. Tons of ad money

26:11

is going in Instagram stories. So

26:13

Instagram wants us using this as

26:15

a part of their platform and

26:17

our followers are consuming this content.

26:19

So if you are feeling stuck about

26:22

Instagram stories and you don't know where to start

26:24

I think that's the first place to start is

26:26

the realization that if you don't figure out how

26:28

to make it work for you and this

26:30

is the thing you have to figure out how it's

26:32

gonna work for you and your content. If you don't

26:35

start the work of figuring that out now

26:37

or yesterday then we're

26:39

gonna get three months six months a year

26:41

down the road and you're going

26:43

to be completely left behind in terms of Instagram.

26:46

I truly believe that as you start piecing this

26:48

together and figuring out how it's gonna work for

26:50

you. I think the first thing you need to

26:52

get really clear on is how much you want

26:54

to show. I always ask my students for

26:57

you how much is fair

26:59

game and then how much is off

27:01

limits and you get to set those

27:03

boundaries. There's no right or wrong here.

27:05

I'm a really big believer in the

27:07

fact that we shouldn't demand authenticity of

27:09

people on social media. You need to be

27:11

able to succeed. I just don't think that's really fair.

27:13

So you get to decide what's off limits

27:16

and what's fair game. Do you want to talk about

27:18

your family? Cool. Talk about your family. Do you not

27:20

want to talk about health? Then you don't have to

27:22

talk about health. Do you want to show your kids

27:24

or do you not want to show your kids? Do

27:26

you only want to talk about the topic of your

27:29

blog or do you want to include more things about

27:31

your lifestyle or how you live or what you enjoy

27:33

doing? Do some of that work.

27:35

Start making some list of what it's cool to

27:37

talk about. What do you feel comfortable sharing online

27:39

especially on Instagram stories and then what is just

27:41

off-limits for you? What do you not want to

27:43

address? Then from there I think the next

27:46

thing is to really decide how much of you

27:48

you want to show on your Instagram stories. So

27:50

listen I get it. There are some people who

27:52

never want to show their face on Instagram or

27:54

even on Instagram stories in particular. They don't want

27:57

to talk to the camera. They don't want to

27:59

do live videos. video, they feel uncomfortable doing

28:01

all those things and here's the thing, for

28:03

Instagram stories to work for you, you don't

28:05

have to do those things. You can show

28:07

your workspace, you can show a product, you

28:09

can do a haul Instagram

28:11

story, you can do a process Instagram

28:14

story, you can take people through your

28:16

day on an Instagram story and

28:18

show them the different things that make up

28:20

you or your work or your product or

28:22

your service or whatever it may be and

28:25

bring them as up into this experience without

28:27

ever putting your face on the camera but

28:29

it's a big but here. You

28:32

are going to miss out if you

28:35

don't do that and the easiest way

28:37

I found for starting

28:39

to create more content and more

28:41

video with me in

28:43

it is to, I know this is gonna

28:45

blow your mind, is to just do it.

28:48

You literally just have to do it. It's

28:50

like all the hard things in life, exercise,

28:52

eating salads for lunch every day, not

28:54

yelling at your children, taking the dogs on

28:57

an extra block walk when you're taking them out,

29:00

all those things that you like don't want to

29:02

do but you know you should do, you just

29:04

have to start doing it and what I find

29:06

time and time again with folks who just start

29:08

with Instagram stories or just start talking to the

29:11

camera or even Julie, they just go live for

29:13

the first time, the results are phenomenal.

29:15

They're out of this world because your

29:17

followers for the first time, if someone's

29:19

followed you on Instagram and you've never

29:21

done an Instagram story where you've talked

29:23

to the camera, you've never done a

29:25

live video, these people have never really

29:27

seen you, they've never really experienced you,

29:29

they've never really heard you and so

29:31

for the very first time, you are

29:33

inviting people to this next level of

29:35

a relationship with you and the

29:37

results are incredible. One of my favorite things

29:39

to tell people, so maybe you've listened all

29:41

this and you're like okay great fine I'm

29:44

gonna try but I'm still feeling scared, I'm

29:46

still feeling reserved. Here's the great news about

29:48

Instagram stories, they're gone after 24 hours

29:51

and if you really hate it, you can

29:53

always delete it. There's a

29:55

three little dots, you can click it and

29:57

hit delete video and it goes away and

29:59

disappears. Let me make this a little more

30:01

practical though because it still feels kind of like yeah, cool

30:03

Tyler I'm gonna do an Instagram story. Here's

30:06

my assignment for you I just want you to do

30:08

an Instagram story where you introduce yourself That's

30:10

a simple Instagram story and it just has

30:13

to be two or three videos where you

30:15

say hi My name is Tyler. This is

30:17

what I do. This is where I live

30:21

This is what I enjoy doing in my free time

30:23

or this is why I do what I do or

30:26

Send me a direct message if you have more

30:28

questions or send me a direct message to share

30:30

with me where you're from something like That

30:32

a super simple easy Introduction story

30:34

it's the best way to get started and

30:36

your followers are going to be interested in

30:38

that I would almost guarantee that

30:40

you would get at least at least one

30:43

direct message from someone if you do that

30:45

and you ask a Question in there and

30:47

you show up as yourself go get your

30:49

full glam on or not or do it

30:51

in beautiful Lying outside or do

30:53

it with a black and white filter after

30:55

dark, whatever you want to do There's no

30:57

right or wrong here Just try an introduction

30:59

story and see what it does for you in your

31:02

community But I promise you once you

31:04

start doing this once your followers can

31:06

start connecting more with you That's

31:08

when those relationships become even more

31:10

meaningful. I love that Instagram story hack,

31:13

you know, it's such I'm calling it an Instagram story

31:15

hack I don't even know if it is one but

31:17

that's what I've decided to call it today I love

31:19

that it just simplifies it, you know, it makes it

31:21

a little bit more approachable It makes it a little

31:24

bit more feasible understandable like, you know, okay, I can

31:26

introduce myself like that's that's easy enough You know if

31:28

I don't it's not like I have to think about

31:30

Oh, what am I gonna say? Am I gonna sound

31:32

stupid saying it? It's like no, you're just introducing yourself.

31:35

So I love that. Thank you for that I would

31:37

love to hear a little bit more on kind of

31:39

just a little bit more of your backstory on

31:41

where you kind of Came from. I mean, I

31:44

know that you're north. You're from North Carolina But

31:46

really how you know when you did a lot

31:48

of community organizing, you know in North Carolina And

31:50

you did a lot for the LGBTQ community there

31:52

and you learned so much about effective social media

31:55

and and really You know

31:57

the causes that can come from that. I would love to

31:59

hear how volunteering and really moving

32:01

people into action helped your passion and

32:03

your belief to do what you do

32:05

now. It's really incredible kind of

32:07

where I came from to what I

32:10

do now and and so my background

32:12

is in nonprofit marketing and management and

32:14

community and political organizing and I spent

32:16

eight years about eight years doing nonprofit

32:19

work and community organizing. Really in that

32:21

work I learned so many

32:23

valuable lessons that I I bring to what I

32:25

do now is I'm helping folks with Instagram and

32:28

what it comes down to is this

32:30

idea of community. This idea of

32:33

how can we pull people together

32:35

who are like-minded or have a

32:37

similar passion or similar ideal about the world.

32:39

How can we pull them together into a

32:41

space and in that space how can we

32:43

make sure that they are all seeing that

32:46

they all feel heard that they all

32:48

feel welcomed and included and then from

32:51

that place how can we move them

32:53

to action. So I pull all of

32:55

that into what I do on social

32:57

media now it's it's really the same.

32:59

Getting really clear on who we're trying

33:01

to attract, what our objective is with

33:03

those people and then what our objective

33:05

is in moving them to action

33:08

and what I found through doing

33:10

that work of community organizing recruiting

33:12

volunteers, recruiting donors for causes and

33:14

nonprofit organizations to today when I'm

33:16

you know getting followers or selling

33:18

my online program or whatever it

33:21

may be is it all comes

33:23

down to that basic level of

33:25

talking to the right people with

33:27

the right message and

33:29

and doing it in a place

33:31

where it is rooted in relationship.

33:34

It's not necessarily transactional but it's

33:36

relational. It's not that I need you

33:38

to give me money and then we can

33:40

have a relationship. It's I'm here and you're

33:42

here and I'm speaking to you and you're

33:44

picking up what I'm putting down and we

33:46

already have a relationship whether or not you

33:48

are paying me whether or not you're buying

33:50

from me because we are in this the

33:52

same space we're on this platform of Instagram.

33:54

So that's what I pull into what I

33:56

do now and I think it's I think

33:58

it's just a really powerful way. to

34:00

shift the way that we think about social

34:03

media and how we're using social media to

34:05

build a business. How we're using it to

34:07

build a business online because it

34:09

means that the work that we're doing

34:12

is really beyond dollars and cents, right?

34:14

It's about making sure people are included

34:16

that they belong that they can identify

34:19

with something that they can feel moved

34:21

to action that they can be inspired

34:23

or encouraged or educated about something and

34:26

that's where the content that

34:29

you create can really start changing

34:31

things for your audience and for your business when

34:33

it's coming from that place instead of a place

34:36

of oh my gosh I need more followers, oh

34:38

my gosh I need more readers, oh my gosh

34:40

I need more brand deals, oh my gosh I

34:42

need more customers. Just shifting that

34:44

paradigm makes everything change for you and

34:46

your business. I love that. Thank

34:48

you so much for sharing that so beautifully.

34:50

I know you talked a little bit already

34:52

about figuring out who you're talking to which

34:54

I love. I just I agree with you

34:57

I think that's so important but something else

34:59

that you also mentioned to me is the

35:01

importance of knowing your followers and just really

35:03

knowing them, getting to know where they're from,

35:05

why they follow you, how you can best

35:07

serve them, learning their names, their interests and

35:09

you know really focus on those connections. So

35:11

you know you've shared how we could do

35:13

this through Instagram stories a little bit and

35:15

then you've of course shared like how to

35:17

actually find out who these people are by

35:20

figuring out who you're talking to. How

35:22

else can we try to know

35:24

our followers more? Oh such a

35:26

such a good question. Okay so

35:28

first thing very basic is Instagram

35:30

has these incredible built-in insight tools

35:32

that you can now use to

35:34

learn so much about your community

35:36

and if you are not on

35:38

a business account yet if you're

35:40

not using these insights I want

35:42

to encourage you to make that

35:44

make that change because I think

35:46

as brands online and as influencers

35:48

as businesses on Instagram we're really

35:50

flying blind if we don't have these insights

35:52

to help us create our content and get

35:54

and get more clear on who we're speaking

35:56

to what we're sharing with them and all

35:59

of those things. And I also think

36:01

a lot of your listeners can probably identify

36:03

with this as, you know, at this stage

36:05

of the game with so many insights available,

36:07

you're going to be really hard pressed to

36:09

get brand deals or, or have partnerships or

36:11

even build relationships with people unless you have

36:13

some stats to back up what you're doing

36:15

on this platform. So I think that's the

36:17

first thing, using the tools that you have

36:19

at your fingertips already to know where they're

36:22

from, how old they are, when they're online,

36:24

what type of content they're engaging with. I

36:26

think that's huge. The next thing is one

36:28

of my favorite things to tell my students.

36:30

And that is the fact that our

36:32

followers are always telling us what they

36:34

want more of and less of. So

36:37

why in the world do we not pay attention to

36:39

them? And I see this all the

36:41

time. Julie, you may, you may see this sometimes

36:43

like in a Facebook group. I, this is where I

36:45

usually see it. Someone will post, I posted this photo

36:47

and it bombed. Can anyone tell me why? Or I

36:50

posted this, this, this post on Instagram and

36:53

it did really well. Can anyone tell me

36:55

why? And in that moment, it's not someone's

36:57

job outside of your business to figure it

37:00

out for you. It's your job to say,

37:02

okay, let me look at the history of

37:04

the content I've created. Let me look at

37:06

the trends of how my audience has to

37:09

engage with my content. And then

37:11

let me see what was different about this post

37:13

that didn't fit. Why did it not align with

37:15

them? Or why was it so incredible that more

37:17

people engaged with it? Was it the photo? Maybe

37:20

the photo was different than what I normally post.

37:22

Maybe the caption was more heartfelt or maybe it

37:24

was more funny. Maybe I switched up my hashtags.

37:26

Maybe I posted at a different time, but looking

37:28

at the history of your content, that's a

37:30

really, really great way to learn more

37:33

about your audience, just paying attention to

37:35

how they engage and what they engage

37:37

with. And then y'all here is like

37:39

the most incredible tip ever, right? Do

37:42

more of the stuff that they, that they engage with.

37:45

It's so, it makes so much more sense. When

37:47

we just think about it that way, this is

37:49

my followers really love. This is how they engage

37:51

with me. I'm going to do more

37:53

of that. And then the next thing, or I guess the

37:55

last thing is kind of what I said earlier, going back

37:58

to this idea of, I want. you

38:00

to spend more time

38:03

paying attention to who is consistently engaging

38:05

with you and starting to have

38:08

those conversations with them. You know, one

38:10

of the reasons I love Instagram stories

38:12

so much is that Instagram has told

38:14

us that 20% of Instagram stories leads

38:17

to a direct message. So one in

38:19

five is going to get someone into

38:21

your inbox on Instagram and I

38:24

think that's incredible as a business owner, as

38:26

a brand online, you're telling me that 20%

38:29

of the time just by showing up on

38:31

Instagram stories, I can get my ideal customer

38:33

or client to contact me. How incredible is

38:36

that? How amazing is that? Every time someone

38:38

direct messages me on Instagram, it opens up

38:40

the opportunity for a conversation and we can

38:43

start building that relationship. I can answer their

38:45

question or I can give them feedback on

38:47

something they've shared or I can just laugh

38:50

with them about something funny that I did

38:52

on my Instagram story and it really opens

38:54

up that dialogue so I

38:57

can start serving them more so I can

38:59

ask them questions and here's the really cool

39:01

thing. So I can sell I

39:03

can sell directly through a direct message

39:05

when I've built that relationship with folks

39:07

who are connecting with me. So another

39:09

reason I'm a big fan of Instagram

39:11

stories because you're opening the door for

39:13

people to connect directly with you and

39:16

it makes it easier than really

39:18

any other platform. The fact that that

39:20

send message bar is across the bottom

39:23

of every single story you do and

39:25

it's so easy for people to access

39:27

you. That is incredible as a brand

39:29

or business online and that's why I

39:32

love it. That's why I encourage folks

39:34

to get on Instagram stories. I

39:37

love that. Thank you for such a thorough

39:39

walkthrough of that. That was amazing. I want

39:41

you to share about your programs and your

39:43

courses a little bit because I know that

39:45

they're amazing. They're so fantastic. I know so

39:47

many of my listeners could learn so much

39:49

from you and just really the value that

39:51

they have. So I would love to open

39:53

that floor up for you to share a

39:55

little bit more about that. Yeah, thank you.

39:57

So I have an online community called the

39:59

follower to fan. society and what we do

40:01

in this community is kind of combine the

40:03

three things that a lot of

40:05

online business owners and you know we have

40:07

folks in our in our community who have

40:09

brick-and-mortar stores or to provide services or make

40:11

products by hand. A lot of what they

40:13

need when they're trying to market their businesses

40:15

on Instagram and it comes down to a

40:18

system for learning what to do and what

40:21

not to do and kind of how to

40:23

implement that. So we have a whole education

40:25

system called the follower to fan framework. We

40:27

also have monthly resources because education

40:30

is nothing without something to make it

40:32

actionable and help you apply it. So

40:34

every month my team and I create

40:36

resources for our members like content guides,

40:38

monthly challenges, things like that

40:40

to help them really apply what they're

40:43

learning and then the last thing which

40:45

I think is really the most important

40:47

thing is our online community. So we've

40:49

built a really strong community of people

40:51

as a part of the society who

40:53

are not only supporting one another and

40:55

cheering one another on but also answering

40:57

each other's questions sharing their wins, sharing

40:59

what they've learned. So that's what the

41:01

follower to fan society is. It's a

41:03

dynamic space online and I always tell

41:05

folks that it is literally like the

41:07

most supportive Facebook group on the internet

41:09

because everyone in there is so

41:11

supportive of one another and they're all cheering

41:13

each other on and and I love being

41:15

in that group so much. So yeah so

41:17

that's what that's what I offer and folks

41:19

can learn more at followertofansociety.com I

41:22

love that. Thank you so much. I got

41:24

to kind of take a sneak peek into

41:26

it. Probably around last fall you shared with

41:28

me amazing content that was there and it

41:30

really is amazing so I hope that people

41:32

will take action on that and go check

41:34

it out. So before you wrap this up

41:36

I wanted to have to do something fun

41:38

with you a little fast-five action and ask

41:40

you just five quick questions that you can

41:42

answer off the top of your head. Your

41:44

favorite person to follow on Instagram? Oh

41:47

it's a tie between Jen Gotch

41:49

and Orlando Soria. They're both hilarious.

41:52

Oh and I have to say

41:54

Brian Patrick Flynn as well. Okay

41:56

so three way tie between those

41:58

three amazing content creators. I love them. I

42:00

love that. Okay, great. Number

42:03

two best piece of advice that you've

42:05

ever received? Oh, well, I didn't

42:07

receive it directly because RuPaul

42:09

sent it to the world when RuPaul said if

42:11

they don't pay your bills, don't pay them no

42:13

mind. I love that. I know I do too.

42:15

He sent it to Oprah too and I just it was great.

42:19

It's awesome. Or your favorite book or website to

42:21

read for business or just for marketing or growth?

42:23

Oh, okay. So I am an Amy

42:25

Porterfield fanboy through and through. She's

42:28

the best. I know, right? So

42:30

her entire website, her entire, just

42:32

everything she creates is really, is

42:34

really helpful. Yeah, she's amazing.

42:37

I adore her. And then the app that

42:39

you can't live without besides Instagram, of course. Of

42:42

course, besides Instagram. Oh, that's

42:44

a good question. I'm trying to think of what I kind

42:46

of go to the most right now. You

42:49

know, I wish I had something incredible like a

42:51

meditation app or something cool. But I

42:54

think, you know, right now I'm in a Twitter phase

42:56

right now. I'm in a Twitter phase. I'm loving it.

42:58

Yeah, nice. I like it. Okay. And so

43:00

if someone was to describe your Instagram feed

43:03

to someone who has never seen it before,

43:05

what do you hope they would say about

43:07

it? Oh my gosh, I love this.

43:09

I'm stealing this question, Julie. And I'm

43:11

stealing my students. I love it right

43:14

now. Okay, I would hope that they

43:16

would say my feed is inspiring, that

43:19

it is encouraging, that it is

43:21

funny, and that it is

43:23

just it feels like honestly, okay, this is so

43:25

oh my god, it's so cheesy. But it feels

43:28

like you're following like the gay best friend you

43:30

never had. I love that. Who can help you

43:32

with your Instagram and your business. The

43:34

gay bestie. I love that so much. Okay,

43:36

and then of course, where can everyone connect

43:39

with you? Okay, so this is going to surprise you

43:41

but you can find me on Instagram at

43:44

I know right at

43:46

Tyler J. McCall and online

43:49

at tylerjmccall.com. I also have a

43:51

free Facebook group called the IG

43:53

advantage. So you can go to

43:55

tylerjmccall.com/group to get over there and

43:57

join us in that fun Facebook.

44:00

group. Fabulous. Well, if

44:02

you are listening today and you want

44:04

44:08

stuff, then make sure to head over

44:11

to theinfluencerpodcast.com. I am

44:13

44:15

of the things, and even more information that

44:17

you can dive into over there, so make

44:20

sure to check that out at theinfluencerpodcast.com. And

44:22

Tyler, thank you so much again for coming on today.

44:24

You're such a wealth of knowledge. It was so fun

44:26

to finally do this. And I'm

44:28

so excited for my listeners to learn more

44:31

about you, to get to know you and the amazing

44:33

content that you create. Thank you. Thank

44:35

you so much for having me. It was a lot of

44:37

fun. There you have it, my friends. I hope that

44:40

you loved today's conversation with Tyler. And I hope that

44:42

you took a lot of notes because there was a

44:44

lot of really good, timeless nuggets in

44:46

that conversation that I had. And speaking

44:48

of timeless and speaking of Instagram growth

44:50

and all of the things I know

wanting that support and how to build
