In this episode, we welcome back Allen C. Paul for an important conversation on the third rail of conversations, race. I will tell everyone that this was a much more difficult conversation than I imagined, and I didn’t want to have it in the first place!

But with all that is going on in the world, and since this is an uncomfortable conversation, both Allen and I jumped right in. I always say that if you are not uncomfortable, you’re not doing it right. So I took my own advice, found a great partner to have the conversation with, and I came away better for it. It is so difficult when talking about race to honestly share your thoughts. So much here can get misinterpreted, quotes used against you, fear of insulting the person you’re talking with, and the list of pitfalls is long. But Allen and I agreed it was something we wanted to do, and we dove right in. What I learned is that perspective is important, and getting out of your bubble to improve that perspective is critical. I also proved exactly what I thought prior to the conversation, which is that Allen and I see much of the world the same way, and that our differences are nothing that can’t be worked out through conversation and reason.

This episode is different than anything we have done before, AND I AM HAPPY WE DID IT. I hope that you all take this as an incentive to go out and start open and honest conversations yourself. Conversations where you listen, and not prove how “right” you are. I think that only through honest dialogue will we be able to work through this as a society. And honest dialogue is something that is non-existent in today’s environment. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we did making it.
