Welcome
0:05
to the Kelly Roadshow, the place
0:07
for no fluff. easy to implement
0:10
twenty minute or less business
0:12
and leadership lessons to help you
0:14
build a sustainable business that scales.
0:17
lead with integrity and create
0:19
a lasting legacy. I'm
0:21
Kelly Roach, former NFL cheerleader
0:23
and Fortune five hundred executive, turn
0:25
to eight, figure entrepreneur. Let's
0:28
get started.
0:29
Hey,
0:31
everyone. Welcome back to Elliot showed
0:33
super excited to bring you a power pack
0:36
competition today about how Lisa
0:38
was able to build her business from
0:40
zero to over a million dollars
0:42
in two years using the power of
0:44
brand combined with meaningful
0:47
SEO. A seven figure
0:49
leap is something that lot of you
0:51
are working to achieve in your businesses, whether it's
0:53
the next seven figures, the first seven
0:55
figures. So Lisa, welcome to the show because
0:57
you have me here today. Thanks for having
0:59
me. I'm excited to be here and share whatever
1:02
can with your audience. Absolutely. Well,
1:04
I think it's a fascinating conversation. You
1:06
know, we talk a lot about the power
1:08
of brand really being your absolute
1:11
top of funnel umbrella to everything
1:14
else that happens in any
1:16
company that you own and in any entity
1:18
that you build. So I'm really excited
1:21
you're when you decided that you're
1:23
gonna launch lady bugs.
1:25
And you were building a brand
1:27
that that you're running today, digital advertising,
1:30
marketing SEO, you know, all of those things
1:32
when you talk about how you build that
1:34
through brand, can you describe
1:36
like, what does that mean for you? And what did
1:38
that look like? Yeah. So I mean,
1:40
I didn't even really start building the company
1:43
right away. I was just freelancing. So
1:46
I think that the most important
1:48
thing that to start off with is
1:50
to if you're going to start a business
1:52
or grow your business is to start with something
1:54
that you basically walk out
1:57
of the park. An
1:59
amazing job you do for somebody, an
2:01
amazing project, and
2:03
take that experience and bring
2:05
that to your brand and just advocate
2:08
for that everywhere because they think that when
2:10
you start to try to target everybody, you
2:13
aren't targeting anybody. So right
2:15
away, I just started targeting people
2:17
who had similar pain points to the clients
2:20
that I'd already worked with. And it was
2:22
actually women in the beginning.
2:24
I had worked with a lot of women businesses,
2:27
and it just ended up that women
2:30
ended up kind of gravitating to our agency
2:32
even though they didn't have women owned businesses.
2:35
So that might have been a little bit of like
2:37
how our brands spoke to people, especially with the
2:39
name ladybugs.
2:40
And
2:41
so just I think
2:43
doing a really great job and making sure
2:46
that whatever you're doing is getting
2:48
the amount of brand and exposure
2:51
and promotion that you needed
2:53
to get along with people finding you
2:56
under whatever it is you did. So for
2:58
example, like, if you're a builder, and
3:00
you build a custom home and you do a
3:02
really amazing job, that's like
3:04
a really great story to tell. It's a visual
3:06
story. It's a story that you
3:08
can promote on social media. It's
3:10
something you can build a huge case study
3:12
around and you do some local
3:14
SEO So there's just a
3:16
lot about what your everyday journey
3:18
is, in your business, what you do, being
3:21
completely transparent, being able to share
3:23
that with the world and not being afraid,
3:25
like, oh, someone's gonna steal my idea or someone's
3:27
gonna steal my clients. Just
3:29
focus on you and your uniqueness and
3:31
what you do. Yeah. Absolutely.
3:34
For sure. And and that will be what chimes
3:36
through. So if you were talking
3:38
to our audience today about what
3:40
they to really elevate their
3:42
brand knowing that there's going to
3:44
be some
3:47
tough economics that we're going to be dealing
3:49
with the next couple of years what would be kind
3:51
of the brand preparation checklist of
3:53
what you would tell people to be thinking about
3:55
and working on right now? Howard Bauchner:
3:57
Yeah, I mean, I would say just always
3:59
be consistent with what you're doing. So
4:02
if you are trying to build a brand, make sure
4:04
that your brand message is consistent, make
4:07
sure what you're selling is consistent, your
4:09
positioning, all
4:11
that thing, your pricing, and just making
4:13
sure that you have all that set. so that
4:15
there's no brand confusion about what you
4:17
do or who you are or what you charge.
4:19
So having that all a foundation
4:22
for that And even if you're thinking,
4:24
okay, what's going to happen over the next two or
4:26
three years? What's my plan? Having
4:28
kind of a plan for that? And
4:30
then taking all of that and creating some
4:32
kind of a consistent marketing and
4:34
brand building program. So
4:36
something that encompasses everything
4:38
and it, you know, it can depend on what your budget
4:40
is. But, you know, one of
4:42
the most inexpensive ways to promote
4:44
your business is on Google My Business.
4:47
So just making sure you're listed,
4:49
making sure that you have reviews,
4:51
making sure you're putting images of
4:53
your work up there because automatically
4:55
when people search your business in their area,
4:58
that's a lot of the times the first place they're
5:00
gonna find you. So you can kinda get them
5:02
at that first level. Second
5:05
is making sure that you're building
5:07
a social media audience and you're
5:09
building a brand with people who are
5:11
not gonna buy now, but might buy later
5:13
and continuing to like,
5:16
evangelize, like, for your brand and
5:18
give people great tips and help them.
5:20
I may think the more you help people too,
5:22
the more people resonate with that.
5:24
and also taking kind of your brand
5:26
and maybe like your founder story. I don't know
5:28
if you have heard of Dave Hairhirt,
5:30
but he wrote a book called founder
5:32
brand. And, you know, that's taking a
5:34
little bit of the personalization around your
5:36
business and some storytelling around that
5:38
too. And then having, like, making
5:40
sure you have all the digital assets, and
5:43
newsletter, a website that
5:45
you're working on SEO, that you're doing content.
5:47
And again, you can scale that
5:49
based on what your budget what your
5:51
resources are. But, you know,
5:53
a lot of this stuff you can basically learn
5:56
just by youtubing it or googling it.
5:59
but there
5:59
are lots of resources out there for small
6:02
businesses. It's just I think you have to make the
6:04
time.
6:04
Yeah, absolutely. And and I love
6:07
you said about just the simple Google My
6:09
Business, you know. Mhmm. There's so many
6:11
basic essentials where we're doing,
6:13
like, a level ten thing -- Mhmm. --
6:15
like, level one exactly that,
6:18
you know, could be instant access to
6:20
local people. And I also think
6:22
I'm glad you brought it up because I think with
6:24
the pandemic and people not traveling as
6:26
much. And now, obviously, everyone
6:28
is totally, you know, craving
6:30
travel nonstop creating in person
6:32
connection on SAB, wanting to work more locally,
6:35
now is really a time to double down on any
6:37
type of, like, local marketing local
6:39
access local visibility because
6:42
people wanna be out and about. They want
6:44
to connect. Right? And
6:46
they also want to support local, like when the
6:48
community is starting to, you know,
6:50
have some economic difficulties
6:53
or, you know, whatever the case
6:55
might be. coming up in the future. I mean, I think
6:57
certain industries will be affected and certain
6:59
won't. People want to do business
7:01
with people they know too at that point.
7:03
So definitely getting out and talking to
7:05
people and networking and dupe being on
7:07
podcasts and really anything
7:09
that you can do that you can share
7:11
your you
7:12
know, how you can help people. Like, basically,
7:14
people wanna know how you can solve their
7:17
problems. And, you know, if you can solve a
7:19
problem for somebody like them who has a
7:21
similar problem, and help
7:23
them, then that's how you get those
7:25
customers because they can really resonate with,
7:27
you know, what those pain points were and
7:29
And I would say that's like how
7:31
we win most of our business is because we did
7:33
a lookalike client. They, you
7:35
know, they saw a project we did. They had similar
7:38
issues and, you know, and and they really
7:40
resonated with the work that we did.
7:42
Absolutely love everything that you're sharing here, and I
7:44
wanted to dig in a little bit to the
7:46
local network that you don't speaking
7:48
of, building local, being
7:50
miserable to people that want to publish and
7:52
share with you all of that. So you have brought
7:54
together over five thousand women
7:57
to support one another. And
7:59
I would love to hear more about, you know,
8:01
did you build that as a way
8:03
to support what you were doing with ladybugs?
8:05
Or they complete separate how do they work
8:07
together, and tell me a little bit
8:09
about what did the roadmap
8:11
and the process and the the evolution
8:14
look like to go from zero to five
8:16
thousand women in this group? Yeah. So
8:18
so I previously worked for
8:20
another agency where I was a part
8:22
owner And so as
8:24
part of my job there, you know, I really
8:26
wanted to kind
8:29
of be a mentor and
8:31
help other women. And so and
8:33
also, you know, really help women get
8:35
educated, like, on the digital space and
8:37
stuff like that. I wouldn't say that
8:39
I grew it to you
8:41
know, create customers or for my
8:44
business. At the time, I was actually
8:46
getting divorced and I built it to
8:48
meet new people. and just
8:50
women that, you know, might have
8:52
different businesses and different challenges than,
8:54
like, how we could support one another. So
8:57
it basically became a
8:59
group that, you know, we had a lot of events and
9:01
everything before COVID, but
9:03
it became a group where a lot of women grew their
9:05
businesses. So it became a community to grow your business
9:08
on, but it wasn't really a community that
9:10
I grew my business on. It was just
9:12
something I wanted to do and I want to be a
9:14
part of. I just wanted to be a part
9:16
of being a mentor and helping other
9:18
businesses. So that does
9:20
always come back to you in some way, shape, or
9:22
form. But you
9:24
know, my job on there is, like, help other
9:26
people grow their business. And
9:28
and so, yeah, it's been really great for
9:30
that. Google has been, you know, obviously,
9:32
we had to shut down events and all that stuff, but the
9:34
group is still growing strong and hopefully we'll
9:36
get back there. But there are
9:38
lots of those great communities and that is
9:40
another way to grow your businesses to get
9:42
involved in these online communities. And
9:44
they have them in different cities and
9:46
different towns and and even
9:48
just getting into, like, your local groups,
9:50
like, your town groups, like, those are all
9:52
great ways to make relationships
9:55
and meet partners and, you
9:57
know, I don't think that it's great for being
9:59
on there trying to sell. It's definitely
10:01
more about, like, build the relationships with
10:04
people and people that, you know, get to
10:06
know them, get to help them, and you
10:08
can really then, you know, I kind
10:10
of feel like if you help other people, it just kinda
10:12
comes back. You can't really have an intention. Like,
10:14
I'm gonna network with this person and get to know
10:16
this person, so they give me leads. Like, you can't
10:18
have that attitude. So, you
10:20
know, you can build a really beautiful
10:22
network that way and a great support system
10:24
and all that kind of stuff. So
10:26
that's sort of how that came about, and
10:28
it just grew naturally over
10:30
time and
10:32
especially over, like, right before COVID the year
10:34
before it just seemed to really explode. So
10:37
And, you know, obviously, there's lots of groups like
10:39
that. So that's another really great way to
10:41
promote your business. You mentioned that you
10:43
have the other agency that you are a
10:45
part owner before you built the agency that
10:47
you have for me. So talk to me a little about,
10:49
like, what were your biggest learnings
10:51
from that? And then
10:53
from what you learned from that experience?
10:55
What did you carry with you into
10:57
eighty bucks?
11:01
I've shared on many occasions that
11:03
we get podcast sponsorship
11:06
pitches every single
11:08
week. And for years now,
11:10
we've declined every single one
11:12
of them. But recently, I came across
11:14
an opportunity to share a
11:16
resource a team and just an overall
11:18
incredible human being with
11:20
you that I
11:22
felt was important to action
11:24
on. And today,
11:26
I'm excited to have this
11:28
episode sponsored by my friend,
11:30
Heather show then.
11:33
Now for each and every one of us,
11:35
we know how much energy impacts
11:38
our results. I know you wanna feel
11:40
energized. Encouraged. You
11:42
wanna increase yourself trust. You wanna
11:44
feel all the afters. Right?
11:47
And so I am bringing to
11:49
you a special resource today
11:51
by Heather Chauvin, author of Dine
11:53
to be a good mother and
11:55
the wildly popular podcast emotionally
11:58
uncomfortable to bring you
12:00
this episode. In
12:02
order to feel all of those actors,
12:04
first need to get clear on lead before.
12:06
So Heather has created an energy
12:08
finder quiz, which is gonna help you to
12:10
identify where to focus so
12:12
that you can conquer your energy leaks
12:15
and step into becoming the
12:17
best version of you. If
12:19
you are ready to take a control
12:21
your time and your energy, you can go to heathershow
12:24
then dot com forward slash
12:26
kelly. That's heathershow then dot
12:28
com forward slash kelly to take the
12:30
quiz. And when you do, you're gonna get some
12:32
amazing resources that are gonna help you
12:34
to better leverage everything that
12:36
you are learning and hearing here
12:38
on show. and to step into that
12:40
next version of you. So go
12:42
ahead and take action now.
12:47
Did have
12:51
ladybugs before that, and then I merged with
12:53
them. So there was a lot of stuff from original
12:55
ladybugs that I really loved.
12:57
And
12:58
then the other thing really
13:00
that I learned was that I still really
13:02
enjoy working with the clients. Like,
13:04
everybody says, oh, the owner needs to with
13:06
on the business and promote the business and
13:08
and not be in the client account. So
13:11
I really miss doing the work because I
13:13
am a marketer, like, at heart that
13:15
is really what I'm good at.
13:17
And so I wanted
13:19
to really be back doing
13:21
that again and sort of build a
13:23
team that more ran the company, and
13:25
I could still and, you know,
13:27
biggest thing now, I think, is that I'm
13:29
mentoring a lot in teaching, I'm building
13:31
skills for other people in the company.
13:33
And being able to
13:35
be a part of that with clients again is
13:37
really great. That's what I really missed.
13:40
So Will I always do it?
13:42
I'm not really sure. But right
13:44
now, I'm doing it, and I'm leading other
13:46
people on the journey to to be
13:48
at my level, and I'm learning from
13:50
them too. So I think that's
13:52
what's something really different. And
13:54
also, you know, just the way that
13:56
I work as a person I'm
13:58
not a super process oriented
13:59
person. I'm more creative. I'm more
14:02
iterative. Kind of
14:03
more. I work at it better in an agile environment.
14:06
So I created an agency
14:08
where we embraced that type of
14:10
agile experience, especially
14:12
on growth projects people are really doing like
14:14
a big transformation of their business and
14:16
they're super nervous and, you
14:18
know, they don't really wanna make all the
14:20
changes right away. So I
14:23
that spoke to a lot of like what was going on in
14:25
COVID and stuff like that. So
14:27
we're definitely very different than, like,
14:29
what I did before. Mhmm.
14:32
So, you know,
14:33
I think one of the things coming
14:35
into an economic time as
14:37
we are today is that
14:39
customer retention becomes even
14:41
more important. Right? And
14:43
being able to wow your
14:45
customers and retain them
14:47
and elevate them so
14:49
that you're not facing a high churn
14:51
number is super important.
14:53
What have you found in the
14:55
world of agency services that
14:57
has been most important in fact
15:00
been done for you model in order
15:02
to drive that?
15:04
So I think part of
15:06
it is that we're not a done for you model.
15:08
We're a very corroborative model.
15:10
So I think that
15:12
people who really wanna grow and grow their
15:14
marketing, not just have somebody else
15:16
do it. they're really engaged with
15:18
you. So they're really relying on you
15:20
to move them further
15:22
along the level of marketing that
15:24
they're doing. And so they kinda need your expertise
15:26
versus your services. Mhmm.
15:29
So, you know, some of our clients are in
15:31
full outsourced marketing engagements
15:33
with us. some are in collaborative consulting
15:35
arrangements with us. So I think that
15:37
you have to meet the customer where they
15:39
are. You can't say, oh, we're just gonna do
15:41
outsourced marketing, and that's it. We're not
15:43
gonna be collaborative versus the thought
15:45
process. So I think
15:47
for us, timing of various levels
15:49
of how we work with clients. And
15:51
honestly, just not being fearful of
15:53
being too transparent. There's nothing wrong with your
15:55
clients learning there's nothing
15:57
wrong with them knowing as much as you
15:59
do. Their struggle is always
16:01
gonna be time and energy. Yeah.
16:03
So wherever you can sit in the gap peak for
16:05
people and meet them where they are.
16:07
I think that's super important
16:09
and not being, like, black and white,
16:11
like, oh, we only do things this way.
16:13
I think that mindset moving
16:15
forward you know, and you have to be okay with
16:17
losing some business and not take it
16:19
personal because they might not be where they were
16:21
when they met you. they
16:23
hire a marketing person internally. And
16:26
that's okay. You know, there's always somebody
16:28
out there that needs something. So I think
16:30
nothing afraid of that and embracing the
16:32
thought that maybe you lose a big
16:34
client that's a lot of work. You can help more
16:36
smaller clients or you could consult more.
16:39
So just not being totally set in like how
16:41
you're gonna work with every single client.
16:43
For sure. And what have
16:45
you found to be the absolute,
16:47
you know, best practices
16:49
that you feel are most important
16:51
for a brand that is gonna do a
16:53
collaborative done with you or done forty
16:55
type service similar to, you
16:57
know, an agency. Like yours,
16:59
like, what would you say are the top, you
17:01
know, three to five things that are absolute
17:03
musts in the marketing?
17:04
So I am
17:05
a big proponent
17:08
of SEO. So I
17:10
think having your digital presence,
17:12
you know, out there and
17:14
perfected and messaged correctly
17:16
is super important because
17:18
you know, you can always see the people
17:20
that call you. Like, you can say, oh, I got ten
17:22
leads off my site or five, but you don't
17:25
know who didn't call you and why
17:27
they didn't call you. So you always
17:29
want to be really fasting and making
17:31
sure that you're speaking to the people that you
17:33
are attracting. And I
17:35
think it's super important to be
17:37
updating that all of the time. Like,
17:39
you should be looking at your website every month
17:41
and maybe every two weeks and
17:43
looking at your search terms and looking
17:45
at what people are going to and always be
17:48
iterating better. So I'm number
17:50
one digital presence and SEO and
17:52
social media. And then
17:54
along with, like, you know, making sure
17:56
you're on podcasts and sharing your
17:59
knowledge.
17:59
So, yeah,
18:00
unlimited digital girls. So, of course, I'm
18:02
always gonna say, website SEO, even
18:05
digital advertising for some brands depending on
18:07
what your brand is. So
18:10
yeah. Yeah. No. That's great.
18:12
And what would you say or some of the sakes
18:14
who have wait for someone that's listening to the
18:16
show today that wants to build,
18:18
you know, this this type of
18:20
business and this type of or maybe wants to
18:22
add I have a lot of clients that already run a
18:24
service based business of some kind, but
18:27
then add, you know, an additional leg
18:29
to the business. what are some things that you would
18:31
say to to try and avoid? I
18:34
mean, I wouldn't be too stuck on
18:36
what your ending is, like what your
18:38
goals are because sometimes the
18:40
finest jewels are found
18:42
in the road less traveled.
18:44
I mean, like, for example, like
18:46
Amazon, you know, back in the two thousands when they were
18:48
trying to be a store, they figured out,
18:50
oh, we have all this server space and, you
18:52
know, and they became Amazon because they
18:54
started renting server space, and that was, like,
18:56
never in the plan. So I think you have to
18:58
be okay with things that are not in
19:00
the plan. And
19:02
just making sure that when little opportunities present themselves,
19:04
that might be the universe saying, hey,
19:06
you know, maybe you should look at this and maybe you
19:08
should look at that. Like, some people are, like, you need
19:10
to be laser focused. But
19:14
being laser focused is not always
19:16
the best solution to wanting
19:18
to grow your business and expand. And I think
19:20
people always need to be innovating, like,
19:23
always coming up with new things, not being
19:25
scared to fail. And the
19:27
big mistake that people make is trying to be
19:29
like other people. Like, that is the biggest
19:31
mistake you can make because then you're just a
19:33
follower. Yeah. People wanna work
19:35
with leaders. Penbie
19:37
Moore wrote a whole book on the topic, but
19:39
not a Green More. Oh, I have to
19:42
read that. you
19:44
know, now than Right? Because, you know, people
19:47
it's it's your distinction
19:49
of what, you know, you are
19:51
trying to do in the world
19:53
how you're trying to do it that is different
19:57
from everyone else that is what gives the
19:59
person who's looking for that
20:01
distinction. an answer to their problem.
20:02
Right? And it's it's crazy because I
20:05
think sometimes
20:05
as business owners, we do
20:08
more damn to our own brands
20:10
that we do. How by trying
20:12
to keep up with what you see going in the
20:14
market versus just listening to your
20:16
own instincts, I
20:16
mean, like, you know, hey, this is a
20:19
gap. Build this gap. You know, like I
20:21
see I can help people over here.
20:22
So that's great stuff. Is
20:25
there any specific resource that you
20:27
wanna share or anything that you
20:29
want anybody that is listening today to take
20:31
action on if they wanna learn about
20:33
what you do, how help people, how to learn from you? Yeah.
20:36

20:38

20:57

20:59

21:01

21:03

21:05
go to the to to kind
21:07
of figure out. And, you know, these groups,
21:10

21:12
wanna help you. So
21:14
