0:14
Kindness , we see it all around us . We
0:16
see it when someone pays for someone else's coffee
0:19
or holds the door open for another person
0:21
. We see it in the smallest
0:23
of gestures , like a smile or
0:25
a kind word . But it's different
0:27
when we turn on the news or social media
0:29
. Oftentimes what we
0:32
hear about what outlets are pushing
0:34
is the opposite of kind . Welcome
0:37
to the Kindness Matters podcast . Our
0:39
goal is to give you a place to relax
0:41
, to revel in stories of people
0:43
who have received or given kindness
0:45
, A place to inspire and
0:48
motivate each and every one of us to
0:50
practice kindness every day . Hello
0:53
and welcome everybody to the Kindness Matters
0:55
podcast . I am your host , Mike
0:58
Rathbun , and before
1:00
we get started with the interview , I'd just
1:02
like to remind everybody to go
1:05
over and check out the Deluxe Edition
1:07
Network podcast of the month , DeluxeEditionNetworkcom
1:12
. This month they've got two podcasts
1:14
of the month the Deluxe Edition and
1:17
the Steven Crypto Show
1:19
, DeluxeEditionNetworkcom
1:22
podcast of the month and
1:25
I have two women on that . I've
1:27
had on before but they were so
1:29
lovely that I had to have them on again Today
1:32
. I'm joined by Missy Mershman
1:34
and Stacy Burnham , and
1:37
you might remember these two women
1:39
as the
1:41
founders of the Anoka Kindness Rock Garden
1:44
, my second most
1:46
downloaded podcast episode
1:48
, and there's
1:50
something , though , that I
1:52
knew at the time , but
1:54
I don't know if I mentioned it that
1:58
there was another reason I wanted
2:00
to have them on , and that
2:02
is because they , in addition to the Rock
2:04
Garden , they are both
2:07
founding members
2:09
of the Minnesota Kindness
2:11
Alliance , which is a it's a non-profit
2:13
right .
2:15
Yep .
2:17
Okay , welcome , welcome , missy
2:19
and Stacy . Welcome back to the show , thanks
2:22
.
2:24
Thank you , good to be back , well , you
2:26
guys have been .
2:27
I'm sorry .
2:29
I said it's good to be back .
2:31
Ah , so nice of you to say
2:33
you guys have
2:35
been kind of on a roll with the Rock Garden
2:38
You've
2:40
had . You
2:42
raised funds and built a
2:44
float for the world
2:46
famous Anoka Halloween
2:48
Parade , right . Yes
2:51
, we did , and it's such a cool float
2:53
.
2:54
It is , it is , my husband is . But
2:56
now you didn't limit it to the .
2:58
to Anoka , you just ran it somewhere else , right
3:00
?
3:01
Yes , we were .
3:02
I'm sorry what .
3:03
We were in the Cambridge Snowflake
3:06
Parade last night
3:08
. It was a night parade , so it was a light up
3:10
parade .
3:14
Oh , that's so cool and your float does
3:16
light up . This is not like a regular , like
3:18
a daytime viewing . Only this
3:21
float lights up and it was specially designed
3:23
for that . I think right , because Anoka's
3:26
parade is at night .
3:29
It was designed for that . Anoka has two parades
3:31
. One is a night parade and one is a day parade , so
3:34
we wanted to make sure we could be in both of
3:36
them . And then we had so much fun
3:38
, we started looking for other parades to be
3:40
in and we ended up in another night parade
3:42
in Cambridge .
3:46
Oh , you know they're
3:48
not doing holiday as of this year , are
3:50
they ? Minneapolis isn't ? I'm
3:52
not sure I'm not sure , because I could see
3:54
you guys being in that .
3:56
Well , if anybody has a parade they want
3:58
us in , they can find us . We love
4:00
a good parade .
4:02
Especially a light up parade . Who doesn't ?
4:03
love . A good parade , though , right .
4:06
The float just glows at night . It's really
4:08
beautiful . Yeah , it does .
4:10
It really is . It's gorgeous . I
4:14
wonder if Macy's is still too . Can
4:17
we get it out to New York City ? I
4:20
mean , I know a short time oh
4:23
. That
4:26
would be a lot of fun . Talk about world famous
4:28
. Talk about bringing bringing
4:30
Attention to your cause
4:33
right .
4:34
I mean they have high school bands that march from
4:36
all over . Why ?
4:37
not ? Why not a float right ? You have to have dreams
4:39
and goals .
4:40
Yeah , we're gonna reach out to find them see
4:42
.
4:46
That would be so cool . I can
4:48
be sitting there on my on my
4:50
couch in my Stretchy
4:53
pants , waiting for Thanksgiving dinner and go .
4:55
I know them , that's right .
5:00
So tell us , though , about
5:03
a little bit about the
5:05
Minnesota kindness alliance . Did you guys
5:08
start that at the same time you started
5:10
the Rock Garden ?
5:12
Well , we did not . The Rock Garden
5:15
started okay there's a small
5:17
kind of fun thing to do . And
5:19
then , as it grew , and
5:21
then Once we
5:23
officially moved to a site that is
5:25
on , you know , city of
5:27
Inoka prop park property
5:29
, we had to do some real thinking
5:31
about our agreement with how this was going to be
5:33
managed . You know , the city
5:36
is Awesome and they do
5:38
so many great things for us , but they don't want to manage
5:40
our events and they don't want to build our float and
5:42
those kinds of things , and so , and
5:44
the funding , you know that's a whole , nother part
5:46
of it . So we had to come up with
5:49
a way to be able to do the you know
5:51
, financial support and the
5:53
logistic volunteers , all of that
5:55
stuff . So the best way we
5:57
could think of to do that was to come up with a nonprofit
6:00
group .
6:01
And then and it allowed us to do this
6:03
allows us to do more than just rock
6:06
garden Exactly . I mean
6:08
right as this kind of as
6:10
the Rock Garden grew , you
6:14
know , we kind of saw a need for to branch
6:16
out into other things , not
6:19
just the rock painting and
6:21
and the Rock Garden . So the
6:23
Minnesota kindness alliance kind of umbrellas
6:26
is a good umbrella for all of that .
6:28
Right , and we , you know , with that name
6:31
of Minnesota , sure it Broaden
6:33
our horizon out of Inoka , only
6:35
we know , cause , where we are and that's kind
6:37
of the heart of our Program . But
6:39
we wanted to be able to go expand
6:42
. And now that you talk about Macy's , I mean maybe
6:44
we should have said world kindness . But
6:46
we don't want it , we didn't want to be limited either
6:48
, and so we have a written agreement
6:51
with the city of Inoka on how things
6:53
work , and part of it is that our nonprofit
6:55
group , you know , kind of manages all of
6:57
those things , the finances , the volunteers , the
6:59
proud programs that we do . We work with them
7:01
closely and we'll partner with them a lot
7:03
on things all year round . But the
7:06
Minnesota kindness alliance really does give
7:08
us More . Yes
7:12
, so , and like as Stacy mentioned
7:15
, you know , with the umbrella , like it's just kind of . We
7:18
keep coming up with more things . We want to do this
7:20
and we want to do this , like today , we have a rock painting
7:22
event at our site and we
7:25
are doing a toy drive along with that to
7:27
donate toys for toys for
7:29
joy . That's in our Inoka County area
7:31
. And then every time
7:34
we think of another thing , we think we should do this and we should
7:36
do that . Well , that's where Minnesota
7:38
kindness alliance can help us either
7:40
, you know , fund it or just find
7:42
the volunteers and those kinds of things
7:44
.
7:47
Yeah , I Imagine there's probably no shortage
7:50
of ideas , huh .
7:51
Oh no , there's a very , very long list
7:54
of ideas . You're right .
7:58
But now you guys are . You're kind
8:00
of embarking on at
8:03
least what I consider a
8:05
very
8:07
yeah , what's
8:10
I'm struggling for words today A
8:14
very big year-long
8:17
event coming up with
8:20
the Minnesota kindness alliance . Is that correct ?
8:22
Yes , we are . Stacy
8:25
is kind of the brainchild
8:27
of it and she really had a
8:29
great idea , and so we are . We
8:31
have a very well-written plan for the whole
8:34
year and a big event planned
8:36
in the middle of it , so we are
8:38
taking on a big challenge .
8:44
Okay , so now the objective
8:46
, and this is the
8:49
Minnesota kind . Is this the actual name
8:51
of the event the Minnesota kindness
8:53
alliance make a difference
8:55
day .
8:57
Yeah , yes .
8:58
Is that the ?
8:59
actual , is it ?
9:00
Yeah , yes .
9:02
Okay .
9:02
And that is gonna kick
9:04
off .
9:07
Yes .
9:08
Oh no , you want to get the . You want to get the organization
9:11
name in there .
9:11
Absolutely .
9:15
So that's , that's awesome . Now and
9:18
again , this is gonna be a
9:20
year-long event , starting in January
9:23
, so a month and a half away
9:25
.
9:28
Yes .
9:28
And you're gonna , you're gonna . Why
9:32
don't you tell us a little bit about what ? What's
9:34
gonna go into that ? Because I think this is really cool
9:36
. I have the opportunity to see
9:38
some of the the outline , so and
9:41
I'm reading through it and I'm just excited myself
9:43
. So why don't you share with our listeners
9:45
what they can expect coming
9:48
in the next year ?
9:50
Okay , well , we've kind of
9:52
divided the year into quarters , you
9:54
know . So January , february or March is
9:57
quarter one . April
9:59
, may , june , quarter two you
10:01
know what's the next July , august , september
10:04
, three , october , november , december , quarter four
10:06
. And our thought was
10:08
, well , you
10:10
know , coming up with ways to make
10:12
a difference . And while
10:14
we would always encourage somebody to
10:17
do to make a difference any
10:19
day , but we just thought we
10:21
would highlight one day in the quarter
10:23
, you know , and kind of remind people , hey
10:25
, you should do something
10:27
to make a difference today , you know , and
10:29
it doesn't have to cost money
10:31
, you
10:34
know , we're kind of trying to come up with a list of
10:36
things people can do to make a difference that
10:38
, you know , doesn't cost , doesn't
10:41
not cost money , right , and
10:43
you know , we'll pick that day , we'll
10:46
, you know , put it out on our social
10:49
media sites and just say , hey , this
10:51
is a day , you know , do something to make a difference
10:53
. And then send us your submissions
10:56
, whether it's a picture or a video
10:58
or what you did , just
11:01
to highlight , you know , the powerful
11:03
impact making a difference has
11:06
, not only on somebody but
11:09
to yourself as well . I mean , this
11:12
is just a , you know , a quote from a Mayo
11:14
Clinic article . That
11:16
kindness has been shown
11:18
to increase self-esteem , empathy
11:20
, compassion and improve your mood . It
11:23
can decrease blood pressure and
11:25
cortisol , a hormone directly related
11:27
to stress levels . People who
11:29
give of themselves in a balanced way
11:31
also tend to be healthier and live longer
11:33
, and so it
11:35
really is kind of twofold
11:38
and making a difference . It is twofold
11:41
and along that
11:43
make you know things . You know to
11:45
make a difference , like you said , you don't
11:47
need to spend money , but for some people it is , for
11:50
some people it's making a donation , you
11:53
know . Buying a cup of coffee for someone
11:56
, yeah , but you know , paying for lunch for a stranger . But
11:59
we just want to really focus also
12:01
on it doesn't cost money . A simple
12:03
way of a smile , holding
12:05
the door , telling somebody you
12:08
know you like their outfit , that their hair looks nice
12:10
, or you know , just
12:13
something very simple , can
12:15
really make a difference in somebody's
12:18
day and in a way you would may never
12:20
even know , right , right
12:22
.
12:23
Exactly .
12:24
Oh yeah , Absolutely . I
12:26
love that idea the
12:28
photo submission , and
12:31
you'll be collecting those through
12:34
your social media sites .
12:35
Yeah , we'll collect them and then , you know , kind
12:37
of at the end of each quarter you
12:39
know , make a little video montage of
12:41
them .
12:43
That's such a cool idea .
12:45
Yeah .
12:46
And that goes all the way through the year .
12:48
So that'll go all the way through the year . And
12:52
then what is it ? May 18th
12:54
is what we're calling our
12:56
Minnesota Kindness Alliance Make
12:58
a Difference Day Festival . So
13:01
we kind of have just a one day festival
13:03
planned . You
13:05
know a lot of it is in the works . We
13:07
do have a speaker lined up that will
13:09
. He'll kind of talk , he'll kind of
13:11
give a little speech , more kid oriented
13:14
and then adult oriented
13:16
, and we just want , you
13:19
know , like vendors and
13:21
organizations , a
13:24
place to bring people together . Like
13:26
I said , whether people
13:28
are making a difference , you know , by
13:30
donating money . You know
13:32
they may learn of some new
13:35
local nonprofits they could donate
13:37
to . We'll have some mental
13:39
or their time .
13:40
Yeah or their time .
13:41
Yes , their time or their ? Talent A
13:43
lot of the groups we've worked with behind the
13:45
scenes on things . That's another thing that they
13:47
need . Maybe your way of making a difference
13:49
is to volunteer at a you
13:52
know a shelter , or with you
13:54
know with our group or with somebody .
13:56
Or they or what . Have you a food
13:59
shelf ?
14:00
Right , or we're just
14:02
really trying to find you know
14:04
a little more , not necessarily
14:07
no local to Anoka or Anoka
14:09
County , or you know , could be Minnesota . Just
14:13
um my , my thing of it is is I
14:16
would personally rather give to something a
14:18
little more local than than the bigger organizations
14:21
. Well , I know there is a need for that
14:24
. Oh sure , that is my personal opinion
14:26
.
14:27
And we really have met quite a few small
14:29
groups that that have are
14:32
making a big difference and you
14:34
know we want to help them grow
14:37
because we know what a difference they're
14:39
making . So here's a way for them to showcase
14:41
that they have to um , you
14:43
know and Stacy touched on the the
14:46
Mayo's document about
14:48
kindness and giving , how
14:50
it helps the person you give
14:52
to , but also yourself , and we
14:54
really want to help
14:57
make a difference in our community
14:59
, anoka or Gromp , larger
15:01
um with people with their self
15:04
care and their mental health . That's a
15:06
really important thing to our group . So that's
15:09
how we kind of came about with this
15:11
concept .
15:14
That's so fantastic . I absolutely
15:17
love that . So , not so May is
15:19
, is the the festival
15:21
?
15:21
Yes , and then you
15:24
, and then you continue it through
15:26
the year just continue it through the year and maybe
15:28
, maybe some people will find something
15:30
at the May Festival that they
15:33
use for their make a difference day . You
15:36
know , idea further
15:38
down the rounder , you know in
15:41
quarters three and four .
15:42
Right , yeah
15:46
, oh , absolutely , absolutely
15:48
. That's so cool . I Think
15:54
it's such a great thing you guys are doing and
15:56
you never cease to amaze
15:59
me . I Absolutely
16:03
love it . I do so
16:06
at the end of the year
16:09
, then what happens
16:11
then ?
16:13
Oh , yes , you know we gotta oh
16:15
boy .
16:16
Have we got a plan I ?
16:18
Mean our big dream do it all again .
16:20
This . This sounds like a huge undertaking
16:22
.
16:23
Yes , I mean , if that camp , if that goes
16:25
good , maybe we'll continue it again , but
16:28
I mean long term down
16:30
the road . You know , we are just a
16:32
very small Non-profit with
16:34
a really big dream . You
16:37
can tell us , you can tell me about our dream .
16:39
Well , our big dream , you
16:41
know . I think for
16:43
me one of the things is the
16:46
, the outreach to the community , and yeah , it's really
16:48
fun that we all come together and we do these
16:50
things , but but behind the scenes
16:52
we Stacy and I and the other ladies
16:54
that kind of help manage this to Mental
16:58
health and , and you know
17:00
, suicide awareness , those things Making
17:03
sure people have their needs met . That's
17:05
really important to us . So our big
17:08
dream is to have a
17:10
place in our area
17:12
that is
17:15
similar to something that they have in the city
17:17
of st Cloud and they call it the Cophouse
17:20
, cop , and it's is
17:22
actually a home that is owned
17:25
by the city and run by
17:28
different nonprofit groups . The police department
17:30
have involvement and they
17:32
have lots of outreach things
17:34
there for the community . I really
17:36
encourage people to try to find the information
17:39
. Maybe , mike , we can get you a link To
17:41
see what that looks like in st Cloud . We've
17:43
been absolutely . I have toured it multiple
17:45
times . We really have kind of
17:47
a good plan for that . It
17:49
just takes people time and , of course , money
17:52
. But we're working on that .
17:54
We will be right back with more
17:56
my interview with Stacy and missy but
17:59
first a message from one
18:01
of the other podcasts on
18:03
the deluxe edition network .
18:05
Take a listen , hey , this
18:08
is Sammy from barrel age
18:10
chicks and I'm here with yen . Hey everybody , how you doing , yen ? I'm feeling
18:12
amazing . Yes
18:14
, you are . What we're here to do today is
18:16
talk about where you can find
18:18
barrel age chicks . You
18:21
can find us on Google podcast , apple podcast , spotify
18:24
, anchor and good pods . Yep . On
18:26
the barrel age chicks , we have myself
18:28
, sammy , we have yen , of course
18:30
, and then we have snow , crystal
18:36
and Harley . Yeah , we enjoy talking about everything
18:39
from movies to being current moms , to being just the ladies of the barrel age Flicks
18:41
, boys and their shenanigans in general . Please join
18:43
us without kids , thank you . Yes
18:45
, our podcast is explicit content , so
18:48
it is definitely not for little ears , but
18:50
come out , let your hair down to hear the chick
18:52
side of things . Please
18:56
join us . We need some mom time .
18:58
Okay , so the cop house in st Cloud . Is that correct ? Yeah , yeah
19:00
, and we're not
19:04
. When we say cop house , we
19:10
don't we're not cop .
19:12
Cop stands for community outpost
19:14
. Oh Okay , I immediately went
19:16
. And
19:18
there is , there are , there is an office where a couple . Officers
19:22
have some office space in there but they do a
19:24
lot . They do , you know , some wick Wick
19:30
appointments there . Like
19:33
community . They teach . You know they have people that come in and
19:35
teach cooking classes and homework help they sponsor Soccer
19:42
team for the youth in the area .
19:43
They have coaching out of there . They on
19:45
Thursdays it was candy day . Yeah , that's like trick-or-treating
19:47
every Thursday , and one of the
19:49
days we were there was a bus . School bus had stopped and all the kids
19:52
got off the bus . It came and knocked on the door for
19:54
candy . Mm-hmm , it was very so . Yeah , the
19:56
, the community knows , you know , the kids in the community
19:58
.
19:59
Know what day they can come . You
20:01
know , and it really just is . It's like a community house
20:03
and a lot of people , different people , a lot of different
20:05
Organizations
20:10
, do a lot of different work right out of
20:12
there and we are thinking , oh , we'll build a home here .
20:15
Yes , that I mean . I guess that could happen here too
20:17
but it could just be any kind of a space . It
20:21
could be a retail storefront , it could be a , you
20:23
know , an older building somewhere . We just want a space
20:25
.
20:26
The reason it's a house in st Cloud is
20:28
it's on the site of what was like , I think
20:30
, a former meth . Yeah , that's a lab , a drug
20:32
house . Oh
20:35
wow , the cops were there numerous times
20:37
and then they kind of got you
20:39
know a bad rap in the community . So the city
20:42
, or whoever you know , shut
20:45
down the drug house . They , you
20:47
know , demolish the house and they
20:49
got this funding and and they do , they did build
20:51
it's . It's a house that At some point in time
20:54
, if they choose to , they can , they can sell it to somebody
20:56
and somebody can live in it
20:58
. It's
21:03
a handicapped assessable .
21:04
So it's you know for all . Any kind of family or person that would want to live there could
21:06
do that . It's beautiful . Oh
21:12
wow , there is very beautiful and .
21:16
So really is a community out
21:19
.
21:19
When we say house , it's it they
21:21
don't have housing there , but no , no
21:23
, but it is a . It is a house
21:26
technically a house in a case
21:28
, right in the middle of a neighborhood
21:30
.
21:32
Anoka kindness house .
21:34
Yeah , wouldn't that be nice
21:36
.
21:37
I'll keep thinking about it . I'll
21:39
get back to you . Okay , that so
21:41
. This is . This is Minnesota kindness
21:43
, alliances , big dream . It
21:45
is what , eventually
21:47
, you would like to see happen
21:50
. I
21:52
think that's a great dream . It's
21:54
a fantastic dream . Right
21:56
and yeah it doesn't
21:58
have to be anoka right , because
22:03
I know how we just started here .
22:05
I'm like Well , right .
22:07
Yeah , I mean , that's where you guys are based
22:09
and makes sense that a lot of your things
22:11
take place there .
22:12
but but , yeah , I
22:14
think , in order for it to work , the
22:17
best would be in a place where there's kind of
22:19
a higher concentration of people , of
22:21
community needs community , community
22:23
services . So , right
22:26
where I live , on the outskirts of the Anoka
22:28
area , and the homes are farther apart
22:30
, I don't take sure it being as workable
22:33
there , you know , in a , in a
22:35
neighborhood area , like like where
22:37
our painting site is at a park you
22:40
know , something like that where families who
22:42
don't have transportation , or or children
22:44
or , you know , or kids from school
22:46
, can get out , you know , get out of school at the end of
22:49
the day and maybe walk to if they need to
22:51
do .
22:51
Oh sure , you know , and
22:54
the city of Anoka has some
22:56
their main , your main street . There has
22:59
some great buildings .
23:01
I sure do .
23:01
And and quite
23:03
often has storefronts open .
23:06
We had our eye on a piece of property that
23:08
was ideal location
23:11
and just sold just not the right time
23:13
yeah
23:17
.
23:17
Well that's so fantastic
23:19
and I'm so excited for
23:22
the make
23:25
a difference day project .
23:27
This is going to be amazing and
23:31
I just wanted to touch on back to
23:33
the that are make a difference
23:35
day project Missy
23:38
and I are kicking it off with
23:40
. We were actually we got a little microgrid From
23:44
an organization called the Love
23:46
and Kindness Foundation project
23:48
, so we submitted an idea
23:50
of , you
23:53
know , an act of kindness
23:55
and they
23:57
accepted our idea . So
23:59
we are the sweet care of Thanksgiving
24:02
. We're picking a day and we have
24:04
. We were given money , enough money , and
24:06
we're buying 10 $25
24:08
gift certificates to Cub Foods and
24:11
we will be at the Riverdale Cub Foods
24:13
just randomly handing them out .
24:16
Oh , that's so cool , yeah
24:18
, so .
24:20
Riverdale Cub .
24:21
Food . I'm trying to picture that Riverdale
24:24
.
24:24
Riverdale yeah , over there , and highway
24:26
10 . Yeah , so , oh
24:30
, that's great .
24:32
Great support of our programs
24:34
are all of the things we do and they're crazy
24:37
ideas , so we would like to give
24:39
back to the people in their store , their
24:41
customers , to yeah
24:43
, absolutely , but now
24:45
okay .
24:46
So , yeah , that's fantastic
24:48
. I wish you guys so much luck
24:50
and so much love You're you're
24:53
you're doing good work
24:55

25:17

25:19

25:21
yearlong festivities .
25:24
Or if they want to come to that , they want us
25:26
photos and yeah , or if
25:28
they want us to come to an event of various
25:30
legal yes
25:33
.
25:37
To some schools , all kinds of things .

25:42
