0:53
well known for being the creator of P90X . I
0:55
did P90X in 2008 and
0:58
it transformed my life forever , and so Tony was on my
1:00
bucket list to interview for a long , long time
1:02
and we finally made it happen
1:04
, which was amazing , and Tony did not disappoint
1:06
, and you were in for such a treat . But before we
1:08
dive into the interview with Tony , just a few announcements

2:27
with all that being said , here's my interview with Tony Horton
2:29
. Well
2:32
, hey , tony , thank you so much for taking the time
2:34
to do this interview , and if there's
2:36
anyone listening to this that doesn't know who you are , can you just
2:38
give us a brief overview of who you are and what
2:40
you do ?
2:42
Well , I'm a trainer and I'm a writer and I
2:44
do public speaking and motivational
2:46
speaker and I have a supplement
2:48
line and I have a brand new fitness equipment
2:51
line that will be coming out very soon . I've written
2:53
three books . You know I've been in the health
2:55
and wellness industry for a long , long time . I started
2:57
out as somebody who is a personal trainer to a lot of
2:59
celebrities , mostly rock and rollers . I
3:02
kept rock and roll alive from the 60s and
3:04
70s . Thank you very much . You know
3:06
I've been Billy Idol and Tom Petty and Annie Lennox
3:08
, and you know other people you've heard of , maybe Ewan
3:10
McGregor and Bryce Dallas Howard and
3:12
Allison Janney , and some
3:16
movie stars too Sean Connery . Sean
3:19
Connery and Shubh Marine's Don't React
3:21
Well to Bullets . There you go . Thank you very much . Shilin
3:24
McClain , who was part of the only female member
3:26
of the Rat Pack back in the old days . You
3:28
know I'm 61 , so I've been in this industry
3:30
for a long , long , long time . And
3:33
yeah , I guess that's sort of the very , very , very
3:35
short version . I'm somebody who came up with
3:38
. You know , I was , fortunate enough , I was a young actor in a comic
3:40
and did some improv stuff , and so
3:42
I had a lifestyle of trying to become an actor
3:44
, but I was also a fitness trainer , training all these
3:47
celebrities and stuff , and so and
3:49
the two came together when I started working for Nordic
3:51
Track up in Minneapolis
3:53
up there , you know , up there , you know , in
3:55
Minneapolis . So yeah , I was the pulp up there
3:57
in a ball , you know . Anyway , so there's
3:59
my Minneapolis accent . Thank you very much . I'll
4:02
be here all week and
4:04
you know , so I really was getting my chops
4:06
on camera because I was able to walk and chew gum
4:09
at the same time . You know they would hire an actor
4:11
. They didn't know much about exercise science or kinesiology
4:13
. And then you know they have bodybuilder
4:16
types for fitness people . They weren't really spot
4:18
on when it came to being on camera and I
4:20
was able to do that , so that was sort of my break
4:23
in point . And then
4:25
I met a young entrepreneur named Carl Deichler and he
4:27
said I want to do this thing called Great Body Guaranteed
4:30
. Will you do it ? And it was just another gig as far
4:32
as I was concerned . It made some money and
4:35
then it made enough money . So they said , hey , let's do something called
4:37
Power 90 . And I liked that idea . So
4:39
I helped create that . And I
4:42
have a dog here . I might know it's not about that . My
4:44
dog sheds and I can feel his dog here . Either
4:47
that or I have a twitch . I'm not sure what it is . And
4:50
so we did Power 90 and it just changed
4:52
my life forever . I mean it really was . We sold about
4:54
three or four million copies of that , which was incredibly
4:57
unexpected by everyone , even
4:59
us . And then the next thing was P90X
5:02
, which you know I didn't even think that was a good idea . I thought
5:04
it was too extreme . And when he said
5:06
, hey , I'll give you a year to really develop this thing . And so
5:08
I talked Carl and the folks at Beachbody
5:10
into creating this thing which
5:12
we invented eventually called muscle
5:15
confusion , which was really a lot , of variety in fitness
5:17
. You know , making people who lift weights to cardio
5:20
, cardio folks lifting weights , adding in yoga
5:22
, martial arts , all of it . And you know , here
5:24
it is 16 years later and it's still
5:26
not as popular . But you know
5:28
that was really what established me
5:30
. And so you know , now I walk through the airport of
5:32
anywhere and people tap me on the shoulder
5:34
and , much like you , Doug , who lost
5:37
a bunch of weight doing P90X . But
5:39
then since then , you know , I've been still . You know P90X
5:41
X2 , x3 , 22-minute hardcore
5:44
one-on-one series . You know we did
5:46
a lot of incredible products . It
5:48
was a lot of fun . Now I'm with GuyMTV Fitness
5:51
Yoga , a program
5:53
that people are loving , called the Next Level , and
5:56
I'm working with two other companies to develop other fitness
5:58
programs . And you know , this challenge
6:01
, these challenging times that we're in right now , has
6:03
prevented that from happening . But as
6:05
soon as things normalize , air
6:07
quotes , whatever that means , but people can get this
6:09
studio and shoot I hope the next
6:11
two products are out by the end of the year . That would be really
6:13
exciting .
6:15
Yeah , tell us real quick about the Next Level , Like where
6:17
can people find it and what's the premise of the program .
6:19
Well , if you have Verizon , Vios , Amazon
6:22
Prime , Roku I mean almost any
6:24
type of format
6:27
, whether it be cable or satellite you
6:30
know , you just go to GuyMTV Fitness Yoga and
6:33
you check it out it's
6:35
called Next Level and you sign up through
6:37
your cable or satellite provider
6:39
and I believe right
6:41
now on Roku , it's 30 days free
6:43
. Amazon Prime 30
6:45
days free because it just kind of giving people a break
6:47
, which is a really smart idea . Yeah , you
6:50
have this thing that's going on , Just to kind of you can
6:52
pretty much do every workout in the 30 days . There's
6:54
two seasons , season one and two , and
6:57
there's 23 total workouts and
6:59
you can get them all in for free
7:02
, which is pretty cool . But you know , if you
7:04
don't have Roku or Amazon there is
7:06
Verizon and Vios and Spectrum
7:08
and all these other versions of people have , so
7:10
GuyMTV Fitness Yoga
7:12
. It's kind of a mouthful , but that's how you get to it
7:15
.
7:15
Yeah , and we'll throw links in the show notes . Man
7:17
, you've had quite a journey and I'm just
7:19
curious you know , what do you wish people knew about that journey
7:21
that they may not know ? They see everything you're doing now , what
7:23
you did with P90X , what do you
7:25
wish people knew ?
7:28
You know , I think a lot . But they see you in
7:30
this place where you , you know , you're successful
7:32
right and you've reached whatever pinnacle
7:35
of success . I think a lot of people assume that
7:37
you've always had kind of an
7:40
easy go at it , which
7:42
is certainly not the case . You know , I don't think . I mean
7:44
people think , oh , he was probably the captain of the football team
7:49
, you know , and dated the cheerleaders and
7:51
was always a pretty good student and
7:53
was always very ambitious
7:55
, and none of those things are true . You
7:58
know I was a C-minus student with the speech impediment
8:00
. I moved six times in fourth , fifth grade because my father
8:02
was in the military and then he got
8:04
different jobs , we got transferred . So you know
8:06
I was always the smallest kid , the scrawnyest kid
8:08
. The speech impediment , I think , called
8:10
cluttering , didn't help me at all . You know I
8:12
was a target . I was the kid that got his lunch
8:14
when he's told , and shoved in the locker and beat up at the bus
8:17
stop , all that kind of thing . You know what I mean . So
8:19
I was super , super insecure
8:21
and my life was filled with lots
8:23
of fear and trepidation and
8:27
you know . And then I started doing some personal development
8:30
in college . You know I read your
8:33
erroneous zones and , looking out for number one
8:35
, I'm trying to think it's not Zig Ziglar or
8:37
Wayne Dyer , but it was somebody like that and I really
8:39
thought , wow , this is information I never got in school
8:42
. You know what I mean .
8:43
So it was a long and winding road , as
8:45
the Beatles would say .
8:46
For me it did start out very easily
8:48
, but I always had this little voice in my head that said
8:50
you know , life can be a whole lot better . I don't know how to get there
8:52
. And then I just started taking new information
8:54
. You know , I was going to these seminars , these personal
8:56
development seminars , and it was , you
8:58
know , it was above and beyond . It was just how to be a more
9:01
productive , happier human being , because I was
9:03
not in a relationship , I was living in a you
9:05
know a little two bedroom apartment with a view of a convalescent
9:07
home not you know car getting broken
9:09
into . And when I first came out here to LA
9:11
and you know I was , I was
9:13
somebody who was a handyman and a carpenter
9:16
and I was doing mine at the pier . I was a , you
9:18
know , I was a trained mine back in college
9:20
. What is what's going on , doug ? I can't
9:22
, oh , oh , that's just the screen , sorry
9:24
. You know what I mean . And so when I was
9:26
out of money and that was often I'd have to put
9:29
on my outfit , my , my
9:31
mine face , and go down to the pier
9:33
, into UCLA , which
9:35
was nearby , and put the hat down . And it's
9:37
no fun performing for food . It's
9:40
very different than you just got on stage and you're sort of
9:42
entertaining people . It's a different sensation Because
9:44
you're always looking down at your hat going okay , is that enough money
9:46
to go buy some yogurt and Cheerios ? You
9:48
know , then they would live on breakfast , lunch and dinner for three days
9:50
. You know , these were really really
9:52
hard times and it took a long , long time
9:54
. And the lesson in that is , you know , and
9:58
everybody said stop , get , move back
10:00
to the East Coast . What are you doing out there ? You can
10:02
be a great this or that or the other thing . You know you could
10:04
be a restaurant manager , you could . You know you could
10:06
be a salesman or whatever . And
10:08
I just , I just stuck with my vision . You know
10:10
what I mean and I just assumed that at some point
10:13
, even though it took decades
10:15
to get there I mean , you know , making it . I
10:17
didn't . You know , I was out of debt and
10:20
I was . You know , I'm not going to call myself a
10:22
C minus celebrity I was quasi
10:24
famous and successful in my 40s
10:27
. It took . It took . You know , it didn't happen in my
10:29
40s . My this journey started in
10:31
my early 20s . I came out to California in 1981
10:34
. I was 21 years old and
10:36
so it took a long , long , long , long
10:38
time , but I was not to be detoured . I
10:40
was going to continue to fight the good fight and
10:42
I didn't know I was going to end up . You
10:45
know , as a well-known trainer , this
10:48
book had a lot to do with it . It's funny I've been doing a couple
10:50
podcasts when breaking up this book , if you've ever
10:52
read the magic lamp , the magic
10:54
lamp by Keith Ellis . You know
10:56
it just sort of helps you figure out what
10:58
, who you're supposed to be . You know you're supposed to follow your
11:00
passion and it would . You know you it would . There
11:02
were these great lessons in there , like a write down , all the things
11:04
you think you'd be able to do , things Are you interested in , and
11:07
then pit one against the other . You know you make a list
11:09
here and a list here . Do you want to be a jet
11:11
pilot and or a movie star ? Okay , you want
11:13
to be , you want to be , and then you go all the way down and
11:15
eventually you're just stuck with two things and
11:17
it came Out movie star and gym owner . Over
11:21
and over again , you know me , like you know if I had to be , if I
11:23
want to be , you know our famous comedian .
11:25
Whatever in the entertainment , entertainment field or
11:27
in the fitness field , Can
11:34
you , can you talk a little bit about tenacity and pursuing
11:36
your dreams ? Because you stuck with
11:38
it , didn't see success until you were in your 40s
11:40
, but I'm sure there was thousands
11:43
of others that had similar aspirations
11:45
that you did and and Ended up going
11:47
back home and being a restaurant owner or manager
11:50
, like like so many people . Encourage you to do . What
11:52
would you encourage people to do ? Who , who may be
11:55
trying and trying , and trying and trying for years and
11:57
they're still not seeing the traction that
11:59
they want to see ? What would you tell them ?
12:01
Well , you know , typically along the way , almost anybody
12:03
who's trying to pursue their purpose or their passion
12:05
or that
12:07
are , as their French would say , as their raison
12:10
d'etre , as they come into
12:12
roadblocks and the roadblocks are enough to sort
12:14
of kill the journey , so they go back to doing some other you
12:16
know menial job that pays bills . When
12:19
I was an acting , when I was an actor
12:21
, and I had a acting coach , the acting
12:23
coach said you know , I want you all to know , and it was a class
12:25
of 30 plus of us and you would say
12:27
, as much as you all love this , this business
12:30
, it's one of the most brutal in
12:32
the world and you probably know that already because of all the auditions
12:34
you've gone on and all the gigs you never got . You know
12:36
, and that's just the net nature of it , and you're
12:38
here in this class honing
12:40
your skills and I I
12:42
hope the very best for all of you and this is his name is
12:44
Darrell Hickman . He was amazing , a great mentor , and
12:48
that's another thing when it comes to , you know , pursuing your
12:50
dreams , finding mentors , and I'll get to that in a second . But
12:52
, you know , he said to everybody you
12:55
better find a second passion , you
12:57
better find a second one , and you might not love it as
12:59
much as you love this , but you better find it , better be
13:01
something close . And I don't know what that is . And if you don't know
13:03
what that is , then you're gonna , you know , then
13:05
you're gonna flounder , maybe for a long , long time
13:08
. You know You're gonna live in that studio apartment with a few
13:10
of the train station into your 50s Because
13:12
you're pursuing this act , acting career , and all you
13:14
ever got was a , you know , was a sleep
13:17
aid commercial . You know , I mean
13:19
this . The idea is that is to be
13:21
successful and to be happy and to
13:23
be able to afford things and have
13:25
the life that you want . And it might not happen here
13:27
. So you know , what am I ? What am I ? What I tell
13:29
people is , if you keep banging your head against the wall
13:32
, even if you have tremendous
13:34
tenacity and even if you're really organized , and if
13:36
, even if you aren't surround yourself with the right kind of people
13:38
, excuse me and
13:40
Then you better find a second
13:42
thing . So I had my fitness business and I had
13:44
my acting career and I was very fortunate to those
13:46
. Two things came together .
13:48
And it could have been just one or the other .
13:49
I don't know , but I got a combination
13:51
of the two and and
13:53
the other thing is , you know you can't be . You can't be
13:56
the kind of person who
13:58
is overly attached to the outcome
14:00
. Right , you know the past is history
14:03
. The future is a mystery . You got right now , how much you
14:05
know who you're gonna surround yourself with , find
14:07
from . You know , get rid of the chaff in your life
14:09
, get rid of the people who are the naysayers and the finger pointers
14:11
and the ones who aren't really supporting your journey , and
14:14
tell you to do something else , because that becomes very confusing
14:16
. You know what I mean and so that's
14:20
super important and you've got a really
14:22
you know one of the things for me . I had a conversation in a , in
14:25
a podcast , yesterday . You
14:27
know they were asking me like what we're all ? We're
14:30
all the things that you felt that you needed to be
14:32
to be successful . You know and
14:34
it's funny and I'll repeat you
14:36
know authentic , bold , funny , articulate
14:39
, innovative Camera ready . You
14:41
know you got to be ready to get on camera and
14:43
knock it out of the park . You can't be intimidated by
14:45
this little silly piece
14:47
of you know , this lens in front
14:50
of you . You know my industry super
14:52
fit like . There's a lot of people who do this , who are . Remember
14:54
the first time you went through P90x you did the
14:56
program but you didn't eat . Right now you had to do both , you
14:59
know , and expanding
15:01
your vocabulary . Knowing the difference between didactic
15:04
and pedantic , you know I don't know . I
15:06
mean you know you can't be saying um
15:08
and uh and like and bro
15:11
, and you know I say you know too much , but that's
15:13
something . You've got to be encouraging
15:15
and well groomed . Hello , you
15:17
know , you got to be stylish . There's a lot of things I
15:19
mean , honestly , you've
15:22
got it . You've got to be extraordinary
15:24
in your field . You have to stand out Amongst
15:28
the others and those are really really important
15:30
things and you have to work on those things . And for me
15:32
, you know I was going to acting classes , in prop
15:34
classes , doing stand-up comedy , going
15:37
to scene study classes , going to
15:39
the gym five , six days a week and
15:42
showing up at these auditions , getting rejected over
15:44
and , over and over again , and and being
15:46
patience . I think patience is really really
15:48
important and just keeping , you know , your eye
15:50
in the prize . But but you
15:53
got at some point go . Okay , this isn't working . Whatever
15:55
this is , is there a second option ? You
15:58
know what is that second career ? There's
16:00
a great story of a um , of
16:03
a gentleman who I didn't
16:05
know , but a friend of mine knew him and I love this story because
16:08
it just , it's just so pinpoints . You
16:11
know how to be , how to find your , your
16:14
raison d'etre , your purpose . So he was
16:16
a brilliant math guy . You know . I
16:18
mean , he was a great accountant and he got to work with this
16:20
great firm and and that was it really wasn't
16:22
his thing I love . You know he loved mountain
16:24
biking and any kind of biking you just
16:26
love bicycles . You know that was his deal . So
16:28
you know he got
16:30
married and had kids and you know he moved his way up through
16:32
this firm but he's still in a box , you know , amongst
16:34
other people , you know looking at a fake fern
16:37
and you know four walls and
16:39
every Saturday and Sunday , you know he would sneak away
16:41
or he'd ask his wife or bring his kids to the bike
16:43
shop , his local bike shop in his town . And
16:46
he was there so much that the manager said hey
16:48
, you know , you know more than half of my staff , you
16:50
want to , you want to work here , like on a Saturday
16:52
? So , oh my god , oh my god
16:55
, you gotta be amazing , right ? So he goes
16:57
back and his wife was awesome and said well , you're there anyway
16:59
, you might as well get paid to do it , right ? So you
17:01
started working Saturdays . Then sometimes you work Saturdays
17:03
and Sundays anyway , long story short , five
17:06
years later he owned the place . Wow , he
17:08
owned the place right . So you've
17:11
got this thing where you pay the bills and you
17:13
make some money , and it may not be what you want , but
17:15
your hobby could turn into the thing that you
17:17
love and could really change your life forever , and
17:20
that I don't know who knows . That story is Is
17:22
18 20 years old , so
17:24
you know , you might have eight bike shops by
17:27
now .
17:28
Well , that's great . I'm curious . You
17:30
know you talked about the things you thought you had to be or wanted
17:32
to be . Fame wasn't on there , but
17:34
I am curious . I've been watching the
17:36
live has gone rock or I'm sorry , the rock has
17:38
gone live a few times recently and and
17:41
people are saying hey , do you
17:43
like being famous ? Do you hate it ? Do you love
17:45
it ? And I just think it's an interesting question
17:47
. And you know , I know you say you're a c-level
17:49
celebrity , but You're very , very well
17:51
.
17:52
See minus .
17:53
There we go . My apologies , but
17:57
I am curious . What did you learn about
17:59
becoming known or becoming famous ? And uh
18:01
, do you like it ? Do you hate it ? What's
18:04
that ? Like you know what ?
18:04
and all the interviews I've done . This
18:07
is why you're you're good at this . I've
18:09
never been asked that . I'm
18:12
never been asked that and , uh , I
18:14
think I've sometimes Brought
18:16
it up on my own just because it sort of led
18:18
into one part of the question . Um
18:20
, I , I like it 97%
18:23
of the time .
18:25
I mean I I really do .
18:26
I think I was probably a . You know , there's past
18:28
life . I was a politician or something . You know I maybe
18:30
I would any Roosevelt or something when I was , uh
18:32
, you know , in another life . Um
18:35
, because , a , because I had the kind of career
18:37
that is different than maybe , uh
18:39
, a musician or or
18:42
an actor right , because people like that person's
18:44
music or they like their films , um
18:47
, but but what I've been able to do is I , I've
18:49
been able to change people's lives in the process
18:51
of them seeing me and when they I
18:54
don't know what this is . I hope it's not COVID-19
18:56
.
18:59
Um , you heard , you heard it first on that , the
19:02
goner oh yeah , I'll be in intensive care within the
19:04
hour .
19:05
Um , I shouldn't even care about that , but
19:07
um , you know . So that's , that's
19:09
different . People are seeing me five , six
19:11
, seven days a week , for months
19:14
at a time , in years at a time , so
19:17
, and in the process they're changing physically
19:19
, mentally and emotionally , and even spiritually in
19:21
some cases . I would think , and um
19:23
, and that's a different kind of I , I have a greater
19:26
obligation . So I feel like I have a greater
19:28
obligation . When somebody comes up to me and they say to
19:30
me because they don't say to Sean , to , to I
19:33
still , I kind of say you changed my life . Hey
19:35
, billy Crystal , you changed my life
19:37
. I'm hanks . You
19:40
changed my life . You know me no
19:42
but hey , I really like doing that movie , and
19:44
and so I feel very
19:46
compelled To have
19:48
that conversation , to , to engage
19:51
with that person . I mean , I sign every
19:53
autograph , I'll take every selfie
19:55
. You know I never say no , you
19:57
know , except for those few times where I'm . You know , I'm
20:00
rushing through an airport and I'm trying to catch a plane
20:02
, or maybe I'm sitting down in my you know , you
20:04
know my meal and somebody taps me on their shoulder
20:06
and they want to have a conversation . I'm at a restaurant , you
20:09
know . I mean there's a few times where it's not a whole lot of fun
20:11
, but um , but the other part
20:13
of that answer is there's no
20:15
course that
20:17
shows you how to go from total
20:19
obscurity to being recognized
20:22
. There's nothing that you know , I mean . And so
20:24
your character comes
20:26
into play . You know who you are
20:29
as an individual , because so many
20:31
people you know who
20:33
are , they're thriving , they're , they're
20:35
, they're striving for their , their
20:39
purpose , and maybe
20:42
they weren't terribly charismatic
20:45
or friendly to begin with , and
20:47
so now they're thrust into the situation to have to
20:49
engage with people when they don't want to . And
20:52
so there's nothing worse than when you
20:54
finally meet somebody you really admire
20:56
and then they act like a bonehead , and
20:59
I've seen it . I know people in my industry
21:02
and I know people in other industries that just treat the
21:04
public like crap and
21:06
it just blows my mind . I just can't
21:08
. I don't know why they would do
21:10
that , because it's those people that they're coming up to
21:12
say hello . They're allowing them to have
21:14
their lifestyle and they're allowing them
21:16
to be the stars of whatever it is on stage or
21:19
screen , and then they treat them like crap
21:21
. I don't , I've lost my mind
21:23
. So you know , I always feel very , very obligated
21:25
to do it Occasionally it's
21:27
a little hard .
21:28
Yeah , I was going to say what's the 3 , 3 , 1 , 1 , 1.5%
21:31
. You don't like ?
21:32
Yeah , they put people like you know , in the middle of like , truly
21:34
like dude , oh whoa , and
21:37
I hate what might if I hold
21:39
on . You know that kind of thing . Or
21:42
people who are , you
21:45
know they're not stalkers , but but
21:47
they're just . You know , you meet some
21:49
quirky , odd folks
21:51
that you would never meet otherwise , and these
21:53
are the types of people who feel
21:56
like , well , I've seen you in my house every day for months
21:58
and months , and months , so I'm going to , you know , I'm
22:00
going to try to get into my world
22:02
, you know I mean they're trying to . You know
22:04
they're not outside the doors . There's been a couple , but
22:07
but yeah they're just . You know you
22:09
meet some oddballs and and you
22:11
know I'm not trained for how to deal with that . I'm
22:14
cordial and nice and friendly , but you know
22:16
, like people will , like people will
22:18
drop to their knees .
22:20
Are you serious ? Get up , get up . What are
22:23
you doing ?
22:26
You know , because if they've lost 180 pounds or whatever
22:29
it is , it's , it's so transformative
22:31
that they get kind of a
22:34
I don't know what . That complex is called
22:36
hero complex and they , you know , they , they think
22:38
I'm somebody super , super special and I'm
22:40
just a dude struggling like anybody
22:42
else who happened to make something that work . You
22:44
know , I mean so .
22:46
Yeah , talk about that . You know you talked about you
22:48
had to put in decades of work until you really
22:50
took off . What was it like after
22:52
P 90 came out and P 90 X ? Like , was
22:55
it as satisfying as the
22:57
journey to get there , was it a let down
22:59
? And you were like , is this it ? I'm
23:01
just curious how you reacted . To quote
23:03
unquote some people would see as arriving .
23:07
No , I think when you're in the middle of it , that's
23:09
a great . Another great question . Change is good
23:11
, so . So when you're in the middle
23:14
of it and it's going really well and you're
23:16
in your kind of , you're at the very beginning
23:18
of the creative process , all right , so where should this
23:20
work out , and what should we name that ? And
23:22
you know , you're just , it's like a little puzzle . You're
23:24
trying to put the different pieces where they're supposed to go
23:26
and you know you're running
23:28
to some , some problems . And that's why you
23:30
have test groups . Right , you put people through , I
23:33
mean power 90 . The first test group
23:35
was was Carl Deichler and John Condon , the
23:37
president and CEO , and they would
23:39
come on over my little two bedroom apartment and they would work
23:41
out . You know one of the bedrooms and
23:43
you know they would say I don't like that , I don't know that move next
23:45
to that move doesn't really work . And it was a very collaborative
23:47
thing . It's really really fun to kind of brainstorm
23:50
and and you know , having these little skull
23:52
sessions were trying to figure out the
23:54
formula , you know . And then after that , all right
23:56
, well then let's put a big group of different kinds of people in a room
23:58
and see how that works . And then the change
24:00
again Right , oh , you know what I think we need
24:02
. You know that move is too complicated for
24:04
too many people . And then we started thinking about
24:06
well , let's come up with modifiers . You know , and
24:08
a lot of programs prior to mine , there was no
24:10
such thing as modifiers . There was the person
24:13
in front and all the pretty people in the back and
24:15
everybody was perfect , and so anybody looking
24:17
in always felt like , well , I can't
24:19
do that , this is no good for me . It's
24:21
because the production crew
24:23
or the creators didn't understand
24:26
that there are people at all different kinds
24:28
of levels . So I always felt like , ok
24:30
, watch so and so they're going to . You know
24:32
, mellow out here , they're not going to jump as high , they're not
24:34
going to reach as far or whatever
24:36
it is , and keep an eye on them . And if you look at the
24:38
guy in workouts next level there are
24:40
three very distinct
24:43
levels . I mean , we've got cameras on each
24:45
and every one and that way you can really
24:47
all right , I'm going to focus on level one over here , because
24:49
I'm nowhere near level two and three , and
24:51
so we really took it a step farther and
24:54
that process is just a blast
24:56
Right . And then you're in the actual shooting phase
24:58
, which is which is for me , and
25:01
initially I used to get so nervous and so
25:03
freaked out , but then , as I got better
25:05
at it , is like all right here we
25:07
go and you can tell if you look at the original Power 90
25:09
workouts . Hi everybody , tony
25:11
Horton here and we're going to do some great workouts
25:14
, we're going to do some push ups and it's going to be great . And
25:16
then P 90 X . You
25:20
know what I mean . You can really see how I evolve Dog
25:23
hair on my face . There it is , I
25:25
got it . That'll be weird for people
25:27
to watch .
25:29
But , as you can tell , I just do , and
25:31
so that that's .
25:32
And then you know that it's out there and
25:34
then you're holding it right in your hand . You're
25:37
looking at the disk . You're looking at , you know , because there
25:39
were photo shoots and there were discussions about
25:41
the colors and the font , and then adding
25:43
the music , you know , it's like making a movie
25:45
, you know . And then and then
25:47
you know , you kind of roll the dice . I'm not really part
25:49
of the media , part of it , you know . I mean
25:51
you , hopefully you've got enough good footage and
25:54
the folks that are going to , you know , put this out
25:56
in an infomercial . You hope it's going to do pretty
25:58
well . And then Power 90 went up , you know , through the
26:00
roof , and P 90 X went through the roof . And
26:02
you know I'm not going to lie to you . You
26:05
know , when I was , when I was making Power 90
26:07
, I lived in this apartment for
26:09
21 and a half years . Wow
26:13
, the same apartment . The carpets
26:15
when I moved in were the
26:17
same carpets . When I moved out , you
26:19
know , I asked the landlord , I don't know , two dozen times , can
26:22
you know ? No , just will clean them . You
26:24
know what I mean . The carpets went from a carpet
26:27
to basically it looked
26:29
like cement really there's no
26:31
pad left . It was whatever Right
26:33
. And then you know you make something and it does well
26:35
, and these royalty checks come in the mail and
26:38
you pay off . You know you can , you can buy a new
26:40
car and you can pay off all your
26:42
bills and all your visa
26:45
cards and all your other cards
26:47
. You know me , and because I
26:49
had , you know like I don't know how many cards I
26:51
had you know living from
26:53
whatever credit card to credit card and
26:55
and that's amazing , that's
26:58
an amazing feeling . You know , you feel like
27:00
it , you feel like you won the lottery
27:02
or something , and then you know that you don't have
27:04
to . You know what . You start looking at houses , really
27:07
houses . You
27:10
know , whatever , and I didn't , you know , I was because
27:12
Power 90 had done so well that
27:14
I went from a two bedroom apartment and I got to skip a
27:16
couple levels and I , you
27:18
know , I ended up buying a four bedroom home with the view of the Hollywood sign
27:21
, santa Monica , with guest house
27:23
. It was nuts . And
27:27
then the house was empty because , you know , eventually that
27:29
wave came home and then we made P 90
27:32
X and then P 90 X , and then we put furniture
27:34
in the house and not , you know
27:36
. So it's fun , but
27:38
in between , in between , it's kind
27:40
of like OK , let's go , let's
27:42
go , what's the next one ? And you have to kind of wait your turn . That's what
27:44
happened with Beachbody . You know , he hired Autumn
27:47
and Chalene and and Sean
27:49
T , and you've got , you know , and Sige
27:52
, and all of a sudden it was just
27:54
me and and was
27:56
it only
27:58
one ? One other trainer , debbie
28:01
Sebers . We would rotate , so
28:03
we were always working , and then , as is
28:05
the , as the list
28:07
of trainers got longer and longer . You're waiting longer
28:09
. So it's a little frustrating . And you're under contract , right
28:12
, so you're under contract . So it was like in the old days
28:14
in the movies . You know you'll , you'll work , and we
28:16
tell you you can work . You
28:18
know , I kind of want to work now because I like that feeling
28:20
of what we were doing before and I want to do that more often
28:22
. So eventually , you know , it
28:25
was important for me to kind of say hey
28:27
, you know , this has been a great 20 years with Beachbody . I'm
28:29
still an ambassador for the company . I still love
28:31
everything they do . You know I still promote bond
28:33
and I'm doing , you know , promos
28:36
for double time right now during this this , this
28:39
virus situation . So the relationship
28:41
is still rock solid . But I needed to go . I needed to
28:43
. I wanted my own supplement line , I wanted my own fitness
28:45
equipment line . I wanted to do my own . I want
28:47
to do my next batch of workouts . I wanted to work with more
28:49
than one company and so
28:51
now there's much more freedom and still be
28:54
. You know , it's 61 , still pretty fit
28:56
, still doing alright . People
28:58
still want me around . I'm not so old
29:00
, that that I . People
29:02
still don't want me , which is nice .
29:05
More serious question and kind of the last
29:07
person want to ask is in
29:09
2017 you had a pretty big scare . You got diagnosed
29:12
with Ramsey Hunt syndrome and I'm
29:14
just curious can can you just talk about that experience
29:17
and what you learn from that ?
29:21
Well , I recovered to . I wrote yeah
29:23
, absolutely , because that's a critical piece
29:26
of my life puzzle . Yeah
29:28
, you know I mean it's
29:30
stress related . So I shingles in my ear , you
29:33
know I mean , and so there's a lot of nerves in there that
29:35
go into your brain and when you get shingles in your ear it
29:38
can pretty much destroy those nerves . And
29:40
those nerves have everything to do with with vision
29:42
, with hearing , with smell
29:44
, with balance
29:47
, right , and and
29:49
you know it's funny , when you , when you cut yourself in
29:51
your skin , you break a bone or
29:53
or are
29:56
you , you know that those kinds of normal
29:58
natural injuries or your terror
30:01
muscle , you know it's like a four to eight
30:03
week time frame in which things get better
30:05
and nerves are like
30:08
you talk to doctor , never two
30:10
years from now , eight years from now
30:12
. I mean it's just nerves
30:14
just take forever and ever and ever and ever the healing
30:16
process and for a lot of people , when you , when you burn
30:19
out a nerve , it never gets better , and
30:21
so that was really kind of tough
30:23
right . So here I was in
30:26
the stress that was . The stress was probably
30:28
call calls by a combination of two things
30:30
day apart
30:32
. So there was the Vegas shooting and I had some
30:35
friends that were there and they witnessed some really
30:37
crazy , horrible , horrible
30:40
things and they came away unscathed physically
30:43
, certainly not mentally , and so
30:45
I just that event made
30:47
me so angry , just so angry that
30:49
something like that could happen in this country and
30:51
the following day Tom Petty died . I
30:54
mean , I trained Tom for 30 something years and
30:57
he was a good friend . I went
30:59
to birthday parties and hung
31:01
out with him and I went on tour with him and
31:04
I was there for , you know , when his kids were little and growing
31:06
up . You know , and it
31:09
just shattered me the combination and
31:11
I just the combination of being sad and
31:13
angry . And I was
31:15
going through contract negotiations you
31:17
know that in my opinion weren't going very well and
31:19
that was really frustrating . So I was really nervous
31:22
, nervous , I was sad and I was mad
31:24
, and so you
31:26
know what I mean . I chicken pox as a kid , and if you had chicken
31:29
pox as a kid , then it sits there . That virus is sitting there
31:31
and just wait for you to get bummed out . And
31:33
I did , and I just had a massive
31:35
. We were having a party one night , friday night , like
31:38
a little dinner party , and the right side of my head halfway
31:40
through the night just like
31:42
oh my God , what's going on ?
31:44
And it's not something you get a headache .
31:45
It's not like you rushed to the hospital , to
31:47
the ER , and if I had known
31:49
, if I had known , I could have gotten some antivirals
31:51
and probably nipped it in the bud . But a whole
31:54
week went by and so I thought I maybe had that stroke
31:56
. You know , I thought , oh , my God , what's going on
31:58
? So I was going to a physical therapist and
32:00
nobody knew what was going on . And when I went to the , to
32:03
the ER , I literally asked I was in the
32:05
waiting room and I was vomiting because I was
32:07
so nauseous and I was so dizzy
32:09
and everything was out of whack
32:11
. And they looked at me and they didn't
32:13
know and they had to Google it and
32:15
they go oh , you have something called rancy huntsome room . And they looked
32:17
at my ear and they go how long have you had this rash ? I go what
32:19
rash I get this ? You know it shingles
32:22
, it's in your ear , it's in your ear canal
32:24
, anyway . So
32:28
so I was deathly ill for two months , didn't
32:30
get out of bed , didn't eat , lost 25 pounds
32:32
. You know whatever
32:34
kind of rehab or we go into a . I
32:36
think they're called auto rinal laryngologist
32:38
. You know as the throat guy doing all
32:40
these tests and you
32:43
know my these nerves were fried , my balance was out of whack
32:45
. I was incredibly nauseous . I couldn't eat a
32:47
thing . I couldn't , I couldn't drive , I couldn't get
32:49
out of bed except for to eat breakfast
32:51
, lunch and dinner . And I was . I was sleeping , or
32:53
pretending to sleep , or trying to sleep , for 12
32:56
, 13 , 14 , 15 hours at a time
32:58
and it was awful
33:00
. I mean it was awful . You know , several times
33:02
I would just lay in my , my wife's lap and
33:04
just weep . You know I said I cannot
33:07
because it was relentless . You
33:09
know what I mean . You break a bone , you know right
33:11
. If you get a laceration , you
33:13
know whatever . You tear a muscle
33:15
, you know you can kind of semi function
33:17
. This was I can't do anything
33:20
and all I want to do is vomit , and
33:22
the pain is a 12 and
33:25
it lasted for months . You know
33:27
what I mean . So , um
33:30
, and so you know , 20 people like how are we doing
33:32
through this COVID thing ? I'm doing
33:34
pretty good , you know , I mean because I might
33:36
, I might get it . And , um , I
33:38
already know what horrible is right
33:40
. And so everything , every event
33:43
, every travel thing , everything was canceled
33:45
right . So my income , right , thank God
33:47
. I had things on the air , and you know I was . I had a
33:49
contract and I was making money that way , but
33:51
I wasn't able to do anything like
33:54
I was , and so so many things got canceled
33:56
, unfortunately , and uh
33:58
, and and , after
34:00
about two and a half months , I started
34:03
to come out of it so
34:05
slowly and um
34:08
, the that was the end
34:10
. It was October 2017
34:12
. And uh , you know , here it is now , uh
34:14
, it's April 2020 . And I still
34:16
have little uh , trace
34:19
um issues
34:22
, trace issues not the right way to say that , but
34:24
I still suffer from it on occasion . Um
34:27
, the other day , in the middle of the workout , it just
34:29
kicked in Because when I was
34:31
getting better , it was always like on a scale
34:33
of one to 10 to 10 , meaning you know , like it was when I
34:35
first got it . Just horrible , I can't function , I can't
34:38
go to bed . It would , it would kind of pair
34:40
down to a like a , a five
34:42
, six , seven or a or a
34:44
or a or a four , five , six
34:46
. You know what I mean , where I'm
34:48
miserable and I'm dizzy and
34:51
I can kind of drive . You know what
34:53
I mean and I can kind of start to work out again , but
34:56
it was just really uncomfortable
34:58
. And then , um , I had a huge , I
35:00
had a big blood test . To make a long story short , I
35:02
had a blood test and I discovered that I had Epstein
35:05
bar um in conjunction
35:07
with uh , with , you know which so when it's not
35:09
. Ramsey Hunt syndrome anymore . It becomes bilateral
35:11
vestibular hypofunction , which is like
35:13
a form of PTSD . Um
35:15
, a lot of people who are not Iraq and Afghanistan and come
35:18
back with it and it's just a balanced thing . Like they
35:20
got some . They got blown up . You know what I mean . They survived
35:22
. They got blown up and all the nerves
35:24
in their ears cause it's an ear thing and a brain
35:26
thing . And so I was going
35:28
to the same rehab person as people who are coming back from
35:30
from the Middle East and , uh
35:33
, it took a lot of rehab to learn , learn how to walk
35:35
again . I learned how to walk in a straight line
35:37
and I remember my first job about
35:39
six months afterward . It was in Las Vegas
35:41
, and I had to use my , my
35:43
um carry on luggage as a cane
35:45
on wheels to get
35:47
through the lobby and to get to my room , and when
35:49
I was on stage I had to focus to walk
35:51
from the back of the stage to the mic . You
35:54
know what I mean , um , and
35:56
so even now , here it is , I don't know over two years later , and
35:58
I still deal with it and I'm 90 , 97%
36:01
better . But I had this episode
36:03
like out of the blue about
36:06
five days ago where I I
36:08
was like walking in a bang and I fell into a wall
36:10
, you know . So you deal with
36:12
it , man , you deal with it . But what's
36:14
the lesson here ? The lesson
36:16
here is that , uh , you know , I'm in a better place
36:19
than I was and , um , it's something I'm going
36:21
to have to live with for the rest of my life . And
36:23
most of the time I have really
36:25
good days , and occasionally I have some bad
36:27
ones , um , but as
36:29
a 61 year old , I'm fitter than I've ever been
36:32
, probably as a result of this
36:34
thing , you know , and a lot of people who get
36:36
what I get , ramsey , I'm syndrome that turns into
36:38
the bilateral , the particular lack of function uh
36:41
, live in a very secluded , um
36:43
, life . You know what I mean . They
36:45
maybe they can drive again , but there's
36:47
.
36:48
But they don't , they don't . Maybe you know , and I try to tell people
36:50
you got to .
36:51
You got to do 10 times now
36:53
than what you did before . You
36:55
know what I mean . You got to be relentless about your rehab
36:58
, or relentless about your diet , relentless
37:00
about your workouts , you know . Get on a
37:02
slack line , do yoga where you know
37:04
. I do yoga now and I'm , I'm afraid that
37:07
I'm going to be a domino in warrior three
37:09
or half moon pose . You know what I mean
37:11
. It's like I'm still trembling . You
37:13
know if you , I've been doing these um
37:15
Wednesday night plioclasses
37:17
and there's two exercises where you
37:19
do on one foot and you
37:21
know I'm like an 80 year old man , right , it's , it's
37:23
uh , whatever , you know I'm exposing myself
37:26
to folks who are watching me fail
37:28
, and so you know that's relatable
37:30
, because they're probably going through similar things .
37:32
Yeah , Well , thank you for sharing that
37:34
journey .
37:35
Yeah , yeah , yeah yeah .
37:38
Um , with the time that we
37:41
have left , uh , I do want to go into the lightning round
37:43
. Um , I guess just on the health and fitness
37:45
side can you just talk about . I
37:47
guess I'll just leave this really , really wide open
37:49
. But what have you learned about longevity
37:52
? If you could do one more cup for the rest of your life
37:54
, what would you do ? Any any uh
37:56
habits that you share with people ?
37:58
One where I do chest and back every day . If , if
38:00
, if it had value to be every day . I love pull ups and
38:03
push ups , man , I love Ninja courses and ropes
38:05
and peg boards . I just love , you know , I think I was a monkey
38:07
in a past life . I know who knows
38:09
. Uh , I was Teddy Roosevelt and
38:11
a monkey in the past life . I just love that
38:13
. I hate cardio , but I do it because it's probably the most important
38:16
thing next to yoga . Um , yeah
38:18
, you know , because at my age of 61
38:20
, speed , balance and range of motion go first
38:22
, right , so that's why I get my treadmill
38:25
and sprint , that's why I do martial arts , because it's
38:27
fast , you know . And balance , you
38:29
know . Even though I'm not very good at it now , I
38:31
work on it so that it doesn't deteriorate even
38:33
more . Right . And then flexibility . I
38:36
mean you look at old folks , even old folks who train
38:38
. Often they're still doing the same routines
38:40
they did in high school and college . I
38:42
mean that's nuts . You got to expose yourself
38:44
to things that are going to really , really push
38:47
you , you know . And so , uh , you know , that's
38:49
why I still do yoga , that's why I still do cardio
38:51
, that's why I still do , uh , you know martial
38:53
arts stuff and I keep the variety up
38:55
. I don't lift those . I don't lift weights as much as I used to
38:57
because they're rough on my joints . I do body weight
38:59
stuff . You know what I mean , but I do crazy
39:02
body weight stuff . I climb ropes upside down and do
39:04
whatever you know . Um , yeah
39:06
, there you go .
39:08
All right , let's dive into the lightning round . Uh
39:10
, just a bunch of fun questions . What is the best advice
39:12
you've ever received and who gave it to you ?
39:21
Oh man , I
39:23
never had great mentors . The entire time
39:25
the books I read
39:27
were my mentors . So , whether it was Keith Ellis
39:30
or M Scott Peck or Wayne
39:32
Dyer or Gary
39:35
Zukoff or whoever I
39:38
was reading at the time , I'm a collection
39:40
of information over the course of
39:42
decades . I think the
39:44
first person that really changed my perspective
39:47
about exercise and I don't even remember
39:49
his name , which is really too bad which was
39:51
a weightlifting coach that
39:53
I had in college Because
39:56
he was funny and he was relatable and he treated
39:58
us like peers and
40:00
not like just punk kids . I
40:02
really enjoyed his company and I really look forward
40:04
to that class . I wanted to work
40:06
really hard for him because he was just a great guy . That
40:10
was sort of the beginning for me . And then
40:12
those first books , those first person development
40:14
books . I mean I was self-taught mostly
40:16
. You know what I mean . My dad was traveling
40:18
Monday through Friday . You know what I mean . There
40:21
were no coaches or trainers that I had in high
40:23
school or college that I
40:25
really cared for . So
40:28
yeah , that's the answer to that one .
40:30
If you could put a quote on a billboard for everyone to read
40:32
, what would it say ?
40:33
Do your best and forget the rest .
40:36
Love it , I was waiting all the way to interview for that .
40:38
Do whatever it is and your best changes day
40:40
to day , hour to hour , month to month
40:42
, but just you know what I mean . Another
40:46
one is the more you do , the better you get . So
40:48
repetitive , being consistent
40:50
, purpose , plan , accountability , variety
40:53
I write about that in my book . Having
40:56
a plan , having goals , surrounding
40:58
yourself with really good mentors you
41:01
know what I mean . Getting rid of the people in your life I know it's
41:03
hard , that they're just dragging you down
41:05
and you got to do it and you have to have those conversations
41:07
. That's kind of a combination platter , but
41:09
you know , there you go .
41:10
Yeah , best purchase you've made in the last year
41:12
for $100 or less . I'll say that
41:15
one again Done . Best purchase
41:17
you've made in the last year for $100 or less , oh
41:21
my gosh .
41:24
Oh , $100 or less . Okay
41:30
, well , you ready . Toilet
41:33
paper . You all
41:35
and I stocked up on
41:37
because we have these Paragon events here at our house
41:39
. We have like 30 people in from around the world . We
41:41
had to cancel our March one . We've had three
41:43
so far . We had three in 2019
41:45
. We hope to have a couple more here
41:48
in 2020 . But we always like uh-oh , you know , because we're
41:50
going to have a lot of people here . So we get cases
41:52
and cases of toilet paper . Yes
41:54
, haven't had to buy any since .
41:56
That is one answer I've never had before , so thank you . Well
41:58
, it's true , True Is
42:01
there . You've got to hang out with some really cool people in your life
42:03
. Is there anyone on the planet left that you'd like to have lunch
42:05
with ? Who's number one ?
42:07
Stephen Colbert . I
42:09
want to have lunch with Stephen Colbert man , I
42:11
just and Tom Hanks , I
42:14
just want to hang out with Tom Hanks . You
42:16
know what I mean .
42:17
Can you ?
42:17
make that happen ? Is it going to happen ? I don't know man
42:19
. I was supposed to be on Colbert's old
42:21
show on Comedy Central but
42:24
I got bumped or my
42:27
pre-interview sucked , I'm not sure . I
42:29
think I might have embarrassed myself in the pre-interview
42:31
.
42:31
You know what I mean , Because I would .
42:32
You know , I'm just a huge fan and you know
42:34
I think he's spot on . So yeah
42:37
, maybe one of these days , Stephen
42:39
, if you're listening or watching , come on , man
42:41
. I think you're fantastic and I'd be a great
42:43
guest . Let's do it .
42:45
There we go . Maybe this will be the thing that makes it happen
42:47
. Do you listen to podcasts ? And if
42:49
so , do you have a favorite podcast ?
42:51
You know , I don't , I really don't
42:53
, and everybody's asked me to have my own . I
42:55
think I just have too many balls in the air and
42:59
I just Joe Rogan . I've checked out
43:01
his a couple of times because people say , hey , check this one
43:03
out . But I think my new favorite one
43:05
is going to be this guy , Doug Smith .
43:08
Oh , thank you , he's my man
43:10
my new man right there . Yeah
43:12
, thank you , sir . What
43:15
are you passionate about right now ?
43:19
I'm passionate about my supplement line . It's
43:22
really , really . It's been a long haul . It's taken longer
43:24
than I expected , but we've crossed all
43:26
the T's and dotted all the I's . We've made some amazing
43:28
formulas . I'm really proud of them
43:30
. I'm proud about the way the bottles
43:32
look , the photos and
43:35
mostly the contents . You know I mean what
43:37
we've been able to do . We've got two plant-based
43:39
protein powders chocolate
43:41
and vanilla , two-way and these are grass-fed
43:44
Irish cows man , I even met the people from
43:46
Ireland that take care of these cows
43:48
, which is really cool and the combination
43:50
of vitamin D and BCAAs
43:53
and something called HMB . The
43:57
studies are amazing about HMB and
43:59
it really shows that even if you're coming out of surgery or
44:01
something and you're older like me , or even in their
44:03
70s , it can help actually
44:06
create muscle mass
44:08
from not doing anything . You know
44:10
what I mean , and so I've
44:12
noticed a lot of changes in myself because I work out like a maniac
44:14
and there's something called sarcopenia
44:17
, which is , you know , which is this when you're in your
44:19
40s , 50s , 60s and 70s . It's just , you
44:22
know , it's age-related muscle loss . It's just going to happen
44:24
, and we've come up with a formula that's going to kind
44:26
of help slow that or stop that for some people . And
44:28
that's cool , so I'm really I'm really
44:30
, really excited about that and the next level
44:32
workouts with Guy and they're fun , People
44:35
love them . Not everybody knows about them yet you
44:37
know they're still doing beach body
44:39
products that I've done , which is , you know it's fantastic
44:41
too , but those are really , really
44:43
great , and a lot of the original cast members . So
44:45
you know it's fun to do that . I can't wait to do
44:47
some more .
44:48
That's great . So what are some of the unusual habits
44:51
that enable you to be successful ?
44:56
That's a great question . Yeah
44:58
, man , it's just kind of a I
45:01
write everything down , I write everything
45:03
down and I have notes everywhere . I have a notepad in
45:05
my shower . It's waterproof , really
45:07
, yeah , you stick it up on the wall . It's
45:10
got two little and I always get inspiration in the shower
45:12
, of course . I have a pad next to the sink
45:15
where I brush my teeth , where I get ready
45:17
in the morning , right , you know so because I don't want to
45:19
go back into the shower . I write things down . I've got
45:21
notepads in
45:23
different size notepads , things
45:25
written on them , right
45:27
.
45:28
And you know , sean , I love this Notepads everywhere
45:30
. Is she a fan ?
45:31
Yeah , no , no , yeah , because she borrows them all the
45:33
time . She's always she'll drop right
45:35
down , take it on her desk . I mean , literally , look
45:37
at this man . This is all . These
45:40
are all to do things here
45:42
, right , and
45:44
? And so what I do is I go through my lists
45:47
and I cross them out and that's that's a . You
45:49
know , that's a simple habit . Another
45:51
one is , too , is just is
45:54
making sure that I'm dealing with the people in my life
45:57
that work for me . Well
45:59
, you know what I mean . Like everybody's up to speed
46:01
, you know and some . But in the old days when I wasn't
46:03
good at I , wasn't good at managing people , and
46:05
now I'm just checking in all the time . Hey , do we have everything
46:07
lined up ? It's just , you know , because I got a manager
46:10
, sean , it works for me . I have an assistant , I
46:12
have two social media people and then , of course , all
46:14
the people at GuyMTV
46:16
, fit and Yoga , all the people at Golden Hippo
46:19
that are making my , my , my supplement
46:22
line , just making sure that I'm staying on top
46:24
of all that . You know people say what do you do throughout
46:26
the day ? It's just managing those things . I mean , you
46:28
wake up to 50 emails and you
46:30
know 20 texts . That
46:32
takes some time to get through that stuff and before
46:35
you know I would let , I wouldn't
46:37
. I wasn't as good at it . I think I'm better now
46:39
because I made those mistakes . I don't want to make it any more
46:41
.
46:42
Do you have a routine , a morning
46:44
routine , or do you just wake up and check email and texts
46:47
?
46:47
I don't . It depends on the day , because my route , especially
46:50
now , especially now with this virus , you
46:53
know , I would have my early morning workouts and buddies
46:55
of mine would show up and do it , and I'd
46:57
have my afternoon , late afternoon , post
46:59
work not for me because I work at home , but
47:01
I have my friends would finish work and I'd have another group of people
47:03
showing up at six o'clock or six
47:06
30 . And so that's
47:08
all been shattered and now I'm
47:10
falling into my natural rock and roll pattern
47:12
of staying up really
47:14
late and sleeping in right
47:17
and setting up a podcast like this
47:19
at 11 o'clock with you Right
47:21
. So I used to have , you know , I used to have
47:23
eight o'clock in the morning I had
47:25
workouts at seven 30 or or
47:28
, yeah , seven 30 , and then I'd have
47:30
something after that or I'd eat or I'd do a post
47:32
recovery thing . So my pattern is completely
47:34
out of whack right now . But I'm sure once things
47:37
normalize it I'll go back .
47:39
We talked about a bucket list person you'd want to meet with
47:41
. Is there anything on your bucket list left to do
47:43
? What would be like the top thing on
47:45
your bucket list experience ?
47:47
You know I've done a lot of because of the success
47:49
of all these programs I mean , I've gone heli
47:51
scheme , which is was always
47:53
on that list , and then that's , you know
47:56
, something I'll hopefully continue to do . I
48:00
think one of them is is
48:02
to be successful . This next stage is
48:05
to be successful enough to be
48:07
able to buy my wife a little ranch
48:09
in my awesome
48:11
or in Arizona or something you know . I mean have
48:13
a property . I've always wanted
48:15
a property with a stream that runs
48:17
through it and a pond that freezes
48:20
that I can skate on . You
48:22
know what I mean ? A couple of horses out in the field
48:24
for my wife . I don't really ride . I
48:26
mean I do ride but it's not my only thing . But
48:28
just to be able to provide that for my wife , because she works
48:31
so hard for me and she's so amazing and I love her so dearly
48:33
. I just would love to just say , hey , guess
48:35
what ? You know , the vitamins are doing
48:37
great , the equipment line is doing great , all
48:39
these other things are doing great , and
48:41
so I just want to continue to work really , really hard to
48:43
be able to provide that for her .
48:45
I mean we've got a pretty good setup .
48:47
We live up in the hills , we've got incredible views
48:49
. We have a small place
48:51
in Jackson Hole when we want to go there and ski
48:53
, but yeah , my bucket list
48:55
is you know , I've jumped out of airplanes
48:58
, dude , I've been in two jet fighters
49:00
flying upside down all around
49:02
and then , you know , I've been to 62
49:04
military bases around the world . Yeah
49:08
, you know , I just want to ski
49:10
and I want to hang out on my ranch with my wife
49:12
and my bucket list is filled All
49:15
right ?
49:15
Well , hey , we'll push that link out . Yeah , hopefully
49:18
everyone listening to this can help make that
49:20
dream come true . If you could
49:22
go back and have coffee with 20 year old Tony , what
49:24
would you tell him ? 20
49:27
year old Tony .
49:29
I wouldn't give him any advice . I
49:32
would say , dude , just do what you're doing . I'd say
49:34
a little less procrastination , maybe
49:36
, drink a little less beer , smoke
49:40
a little less pot . Really , it's probably
49:42
better off if you'd get off the weed and
49:44
get off the booze . I mean that all happened anyway
49:46
. It happened probably four years
49:48
afterward , you know what I mean . Like I just went , oh
49:50
, I'm working out a lot of next time I think I'm bad , you
49:53
know . I mean I haven't had a drink . I can't . 30 years , 35
49:55
years , I don't know what's been thrown . And
49:58
yeah , you know , I mean
50:00
, would it have sped things up for me a little bit ? No
50:02
, I mean , everything happened , I think , for a reason . And
50:05
you know I was kind of lazy then and I was procrastinating
50:07
then and I was partying too much then and then
50:10
again so was everybody else around me . I
50:13
was able to meet
50:15
enough of the right people , have a decent
50:18
enough work ethic that I could
50:20
kind of begin to sort of make my way
50:22
to where I am now , which
50:24
is pretty great . I mean , do I
50:26
wish I was ? Do I wish I
50:28
had more money in the bank ? Sure , like everybody else , do
50:30
I wish I had that ranch for my wife already . Yeah
50:33
, sure , but you know it
50:36
is what it is and I'm trying to be present , I'm
50:38
trying to be in the moment , I'm trying to work really hard . You
50:41
know what I mean . I've got 22
50:43
failed businesses in the process
50:45
of all this . You know , I had my own
50:47
watches that didn't work , had my own
50:49
sunglasses that didn't work , had my own mouth
50:52
guards that didn't work , had my own
50:54
clothing line four times that
50:56
didn't work . Had six TV
50:58
pilots . None of those took off . You
51:00
know what I mean , and so you know
51:03
what do I . What do you learn from that ? You know , whatever
51:05
Water onto the bridge , move
51:07
on , keep moving . You know what I mean . And
51:09
so is my brand new fitness equipment aligned . It's
51:11
not quite out yet . Is that going to blow
51:14
up ? I don't know , but
51:16
I'm going to keep pursuing it because I'm doing it , you're going for it .
51:19
Yeah , I love that . And
51:21
you know , many years from now , when you're looking back on your life , what
51:23
do you want to be remembered for and what do you want your legacy
51:25
to be ?
51:33
Yeah , that I did everything that I could to help as many people
51:35
as I could . You
51:37
know , I mean like
51:40
your story . Before we started the podcast
51:42
, you were telling me my story and how I was able to change
51:45
your life . You
51:47
know , that's that
51:50
just God . That just fills me
51:52
up . It fills me up , I
51:54
feel like you know , because when I was
51:56
younger , I always everything , I always
51:58
felt like I was coming up short , like all
52:01
the time , every day , like , god
52:03
, was that the best I could do today Was this week worth
52:05
? You know anything , god ? I don't feel like
52:07
I accomplished anything this month . Boy
52:09
1987 sucked , you
52:11
know what I mean . I don't have any of those feelings anymore . I don't
52:13
. I just feel like , wow , I've got an amazing
52:16
wife . I have a beautiful home , I'm
52:19
able to kind of do almost anything I want to do , and
52:22
it was all as a result of being able to help
52:24
people . You know what I mean . It wasn't like I
52:26
was selling , you know , weapons or
52:28
nuclear plutonium
52:33
or whatever , you know , I mean , it was because
52:35
I was helping people . I mean one of the store
52:37
. This one kid contacts me and
52:40
it turns out that this kid
52:42
, a total stranger , is a friend
52:45
of family members of mine . It
52:48
blew my mind . He was out
52:50
of shape , overweight , was in the
52:52
best shape of his life . He was like 80 plus days
52:54
in a P90X and fell off a
52:56
three-story building into an alley
52:58
Because he fell
53:00
over some bricks . It was dark , they didn't have any light , they
53:03
didn't have a building . He broke everything
53:06
Broke his face , eye
53:08
sockets , arms , wrists , fingers
53:11
, ribs , because he landed
53:13
upper body first
53:15
. The only thing he didn't break his legs was the only thing
53:17
. Everything
53:20
else was destroyed . He was
53:22
pronounced dead three times
53:24
. He came in to
53:26
give him his final a
53:29
couple of times , you know , and
53:32
he immediately goes . P90x
53:35
kept me from dying because I talked
53:37
to my surgeons multiple surgeries
53:39
. Later I
53:41
got that note and I had a phone number at the back because he
53:43
contacted me through my website and I called him up . All
53:47
my doctors said if I was in the shape I was in , if
53:50
I didn't have the basic muscular structure
53:52
that I had , I would
53:54
have died on the spot . Come
53:56
on , man , I
53:59
was at death's door . I was a full-blown
54:01
alcoholic drug addict . I
54:04
had OB'd a bunch of times . My
54:06
girl left me , I was out of a job
54:08
. Then some friend of mine introduced me to P90X
54:11
. I became a trainer . I married the woman
54:13
of my dreams and I have three kids , and
54:15
a fitness is part of my life now . Those
54:18
are just two . There are hundreds
54:21
of stories like that .
54:22
Hundreds I collected them .
54:24
I'm going to write a book and just have those stories in
54:26
that book . So , yeah
54:28
, you know , I want to keep doing
54:31
that . I want to do that until like , when are you going to retire
54:33
, retire ? I like my gig , I want
54:35
to keep doing my gig .
54:36
I mean , I'll take more days off .
54:40
So that legacy right there . You know
54:42
, I'm blessed . I'm blessed , Very
54:44
fortunate .
54:46
I'm one of those stories that I told you , so thank you
54:48
for transforming my life . I can't imagine my life without
54:50
you , and is there anything else you want to leave
54:52
our listeners with today ? Gosh
54:56
no , I think we covered a lot .
54:57
Yeah , I mean , usually at the end I have a little sort
54:59
of a you
55:01
know , I'll leave with this , I'll leave with this If
55:04
you feel like you're stuck and you feel like there's a . You're
55:06
not quite where you want to be in your life , whatever , whether
55:09
it's physically , mentally , emotionally , spiritually . You
55:11
know , I mean there's a lot of things that we can do , a lot of things that we
55:14
can read . You know there's a lot of practices
55:17
that we hope will
55:19
alter things and change things . But
55:21
I know that there's . I know there's one thing that's true
55:23
for everyone , it's a universal truth , right ? So
55:26
there's not very many of those , but there's
55:30
two things that we can control for sure , 100%
55:32
what we decide to eat and
55:34
whether we decided to move or not physically on
55:37
a particular day the traffic , the
55:39
weather , your family , whatever the coronavirus
55:41
work . You know , I mean , there's
55:43
so many things that are out of our control and it's those
55:46
things that are out of our control that makes us crazy , that
55:48
creates all this frustration and fear and
55:50
trepidation , right ? So you
55:53
know , it really comes out of brain chemistry , you
55:56
know . And so when you're eating the right kinds of food because
55:58
you know , I had this bilateral vestibular
56:00
hypo function and Epstein bar and
56:02
I dramatically changed my diet
56:04
and that has been suppressed . Like
56:07
the Epstein bar , it's gone . I mean , I had that . It's
56:10
literally . It looks like narcolepsy . You're
56:12
exhausted all the time and
56:14
so diet is huge . You know you are . Do you eat
56:16
? Jack Elaine said that you know half
56:19
a century ago and it's still true . Because
56:21
when you eat right , when you exercise , you
56:23
got to be consistent . It's got to be five to six days a week
56:26
, it can't be three . If you work out two , three
56:28
, four days a week , four is even not enough . You end
56:30
up with what I call exercise bipolar
56:32
disorder , because when you do eat the
56:34
right foods and you exercise consistently
56:36
, you release norepinephrine , dopamine
56:38
, serotonin , brain derived neurotropic
56:41
factor . It's virtual miracle growth
56:43
for the brain . It happens inside your temporal lobe
56:45
, inside your dentate gyruses . It's
56:47
this little tiny thing , it's smaller than your pinky
56:49
finger , and when you exercise , molecules
56:52
and proteins start to vibrate , they come
56:54
together . They change your perspective , improve your
56:56
memory , your cognition , your sex drive . The
56:58
glasses have full . I mean it changes everything
57:00
about your ability to deal
57:03
with all the things that are outside
57:05
of your control , so that you can have a level of productivity
57:08
you never thought you could have , and
57:10
it's purely because you moved your body
57:13
and you made good food choices , because
57:15
everything comes from up
57:17
inside of your noggin and if you're inconsistent
57:19
with those things , then everything
57:22
in your life will be inconsistent . So
57:24
if you want your life , it's not going to go like this . It's
57:28
going to go like this as
57:30
opposed to like
57:33
that right , because
57:35
nobody's getting younger . We're always aging . We're
57:37
always going to go sarcopenia and a lot of other things internal
57:39
organs , brain function . It slows
57:41
down Exercise and diet
57:44
keeps that from happening . I mean , when I'm 91
57:47
, am I going to still be on the slack
57:49
line and on the pegboard ? God
57:51
, I hope so . That's
57:54
it . Move your body , make
57:56
good food choices , especially now , during
57:59
what's going on around the world . I don't
58:01
understand why so many people who are dealing
58:03
with very tough times make really
58:05
bad choices so they can make that situation
58:07
worse . That is , I mean
58:10
, that's how we are right . I mean , as human beings
58:12
, we always have a tendency to take the
58:14
easy road , but if you're willing to put in the time
58:16
and make better choices , you'll
58:19
notice in a week or two or three that
58:21
you're able to deal with this much , much
58:23
better and you'll have a completely different story at the
58:25
end , and I know you want that , so thank you
58:28
so good , tony .
58:28
It was so great to meet you and spend an hour
58:30
with you . This is going to add massive value to our listeners
58:33
. So thank you and thanks again for everything you do . Well , hey
58:35
, leader , thank you so much for listening to my conversation
58:37
with Tony Horton . I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did
58:39
. You can find ways to connect with him and links
58:41
to everything that we discussed in the show notes at
58:43
l3leadershiporg forward slash 393
58:45
. And , as always , leader , I
58:47
want to challenge you that if you want a 10 extra growth this year
58:49
, then you need to either launch or join an L3 leadership
58:52
mastermind group . Mastermind groups are simply groups
58:54
of six to 12 leaders that meet together for at least one
58:56
year in order to help each other grow , hold each
58:58
other accountable and to do life together . For
59:00
me personally , mastermind groups have been the greatest source of growth
59:02
in my life over the last eight years . So if
59:04
you're interested in learning more about launching a
59:06
joining group , go to L3leadershiporg forward
59:09
slash masterminds or email me at Doug
59:11
Smith and L3leadershiporg . And
59:14
, as always , I like the end of every episode of the quote , and I'll quote
59:16
Jim Rowan today , who said this . He said
59:18
if you really want to do something , you'll find a
59:20
way . If you don't , you'll
59:22
find an excuse . Boom . Well
59:25
, leader , know that my wife Laura and I love you . We believe
59:27
in you and I say it every episode . But don't quit , keep
59:30
leading . The world desperately needs your
59:32
leadership . I'll talk to you next episode .
