1:49
your health and raising healthy kids a lot
1:51
of practical things here and I don't often bring
1:54
health experts on , but this is an area that
1:56
I'm starting to focus on and prioritize as well , so
1:58
I think it will add a lot of value to you . But before we dive
2:00
into the conversation with Maggie , just a few announcements

2:58
with all that being said , let's dive right in . Here's my conversation
3:01
with Maggie Berghoff . Maggie
3:04
Berghoff , welcome to the L3 Leadership Podcast
3:06
. I've been looking forward to this conversation and
3:08
, for those who may not be familiar with us , why don't we just start
3:10
with you just telling us a little bit about who you are and what
3:13
you do .
3:14
Yeah , well , I'm excited to be here too . I am
3:16
an entrepreneur in the online space . I actually
3:18
built my own online functional medicine practice
3:20
in 2017 . And
3:23
then , a few years later , we also launched
3:25
an online business and marketing company very
3:28
similar , related to the wellness space , but helping
3:30
other business owners , other health and wellness professionals
3:33
, to build and scale their own online companies
3:35
. And I'm a mom of three , so
3:37
I have a lot of different things that we
3:39
chat through business , wellness , motherhood
3:42
, all of the things .
3:43
Yeah , and the most exciting thing that I think is happening
3:45
in your life is you're launching a book which is right behind
3:48
you Eat the Treat and so
3:50
why don't you just kind of give us a basic overview
3:52
of why did you write this book and what do you want readers
3:54
to get out of it ?
3:55
Well , my favorite thing about the book is that it's not just about
3:57
eating . Of course it's called Eat to Treat
3:59
, but it's actually the three step , the exact
4:01
three step plan that I would teach my private
4:04
health clients in our functional medicine practice to
4:06
rebalancing their body and healing . We focus
4:08
on finding out what's going on to
4:10
cause your symptoms your nagging symptoms or your chronic
4:13
diseases and then how to create an environment
4:15
that allows your body to heal and detoxify
4:18
. And then , of course , not just what to eat
4:20
, but also mindset around
4:22
nutrition . And I just love because
4:25
, for a pretty , very
4:27
accessible price , you can grab this book and
4:29
dive into exactly what
4:31
I would teach all of our high level private one-on-one
4:33
clients and get this information implemented
4:36
in your own life . So by far my favorite part
4:38
is the accessibility for you to
4:40
take charge of your own health .
4:42
Yeah , and I want to start with just asking really basic questions
4:44
, because functional medicine , I feel like , is blowing
4:46
up over the past five years . I'm sure you've seen that
4:48
too , but I still think there's a lot of people out there
4:50
maybe listening to this and just saying what
4:53
is functional medicine and why does that matter
4:55
? Can you talk to us about that ?
4:56
That's so true . Actually , when I first
4:58
started my business my functional medicine business I
5:00
was like one of the weirdo first ones
5:02
, especially online , and now
5:04
, thankfully , it's a little bit more widespread
5:07
and I also had no idea what the word
5:09
meant . Actually , I had
5:11
a health journey in my young 20s which
5:14
led me to all of this , and I got
5:16
super sick and all these doctors were telling
5:18
me that there was nothing wrong with me , my labs
5:20
looked normal , all this stuff and I
5:22
was not feeling well . And so an
5:24
aunt of mine told me to Google functional
5:26
medicine and she was like Maggie , just
5:29
get on Google and type in functional medicine
5:31
, go down this rabbit hole , because this
5:33
is what you need , this is what's going to heal your body
5:35
. And let me tell you , I went down the
5:37
rabbit hole . I actually went back to school
5:40
and got certified and
5:42
specialized in functional and integrative
5:44
medicine , and so what this means is
5:46
essentially combining traditional
5:49
medicine I , of course , have that knowledge too , and
5:51
I believe there's a time and place for pharmaceuticals
5:53
and traditional medicine but it's finding
5:56
out what's actually going on in your body , the
5:58
actual imbalances and the
6:00
complications that you are having , and then how
6:02
to rewire and rebalance
6:05
your body to actually heal
6:07
, instead of just give it a pharmaceutical
6:09
medication to feel better . So
6:11
we're actually getting deep into
6:13
your biochemical individuality
6:16
, figuring out what's going on in your
6:18
body and then fixing it instead
6:20
of covering it up with medications . It's
6:23
really , really about rebalancing and
6:25
healing .
6:26
Yeah , and so to give people a practical idea
6:28
, so you talked about your healing journey when you got introduced
6:30
to it . What did that actually look like ? Was it literally
6:33
just taking blood work and figuring out what you need to change
6:35
, eating wise , or what happened ?
6:36
Well , ok , first of all , the blood work is
6:38
different in traditional medicine than functional
6:40
medicine . So in the traditional medicine
6:43
model , my blood work was normal
6:45
at first and that's why doctors were telling me
6:47
you're fine , even though I was
6:49
like I was crying and I was so bloated
6:51
, no matter what I ate , and I didn't have any periods
6:53
and all this kind of stuff was going wrong . But
6:56
they were telling me I'm fine because my lab
6:58
said I was so . In functional
7:00
medicine we actually have access to more
7:02
specialty testing where we can find
7:04
out lots of information as far as detailed
7:07
hormone pathways , detox pathways
7:09
. Do you have a parasite
7:11
in your gut ? Do you have hormonal
7:14
imbalances and neurotransmitter imbalances
7:16
? What are your nutrient levels ? Do
7:18
you have heavy metal toxicity All
7:21
these different things that you can find out through saliva
7:23
, blood , stool and urine and hair for
7:26
what's going on in your body . So it was those
7:28
tests that helped guide my
7:30
path to healing , finding out what was actually
7:32
going on in my body and then
7:34
healing it in that way . So it did matter
7:37
what types of tests you're running on your body .
7:39
Yeah , so you ran these tests , and so what did it actually
7:41
show and what did you change that
7:43
made a difference ?
7:45
For me . I had severe nutrient
7:47
imbalances . Like
7:49
they give you all the different nutrient levels , you know
7:51
magnesium D , all the B's , all everything
7:53
and mine were like all the way to the left in the tank
7:55
, red . So if
7:57
you don't have the right nutrients
8:00
, your body
8:02
is not going to be able to do what it's supposed to do . But
8:04
if you give your body what it needs
8:06
, it's going to be able to do more than any
8:08
the smartest doctor in the world or the smartest pill
8:10
in the world will do . So your body wants
8:13
to heal itself . We have to give it a helping hand direction
8:15
. So I had severe nutrient
8:17
deficiencies even though I
8:19
already was eating organic and healthy
8:22
and hitting the gym every day . So that's important to know
8:24
. I didn't . I was not like an unhealthy
8:27
person from what most me
8:29
would would seem . They would look at me and think I
8:31
was healthy already . I wasn't . I also
8:33
had really high levels of aluminum
8:35
and copper toxicity in my body
8:37
. That was just , you know , ruining
8:40
me and I had overgrowth of
8:42
bacteria , the bad bacteria in my gut
8:44
lining . That was also causing
8:46
a lot of complications . So there was just kind of like
8:48
this perfect storm . In
8:50
addition to hormonal imbalances
8:52
I already mentioned , I didn't have a period and I had
8:54
low thyroid . Now I will
8:56
kind of explain a little bit of functional
8:59
medicine versus traditional medicine . So I had
9:01
low thyroid . Now in traditional medicine
9:03
they would say you have a low thyroid here
9:06
, take this thyroid pill . In functional
9:08
medicine we're saying Whoa , your thyroid is
9:10
low . I wonder why . Let's figure out why
9:13
your thyroid might be underacting and
9:15
what we can do to fix it . That's
9:17
a really like concrete example of kind of the
9:19
difference between the two models .
9:22
Yeah , so it sounds like . Well , I guess , the
9:24
way I understand it too , there's also kind of two needs for
9:26
functional medicine . So one , hey , there's something
9:28
wrong with my body , which sounds like it was your story
9:30
. You went and obviously we're able to figure out
9:32
what was wrong and fix it that way . The
9:34
other , and I guess I'm just asking
9:36
, like my view on it I'm interested in this
9:38
space . I haven't really taken the dive in , but
9:41
I'm also interested in , like , optimizing my
9:43
health , and so for me it's like I want to get
9:45
in the best shape possible , I want to do everything I
9:47
can to live as long as I can , et
9:50
cetera , and so that's what I'm looking for . So can people
9:52
who may not feel something wrong with their body also benefit
9:54
, like I'm talking about , when it comes to optimizing
9:57
their health ?
9:57
Yeah , so actually , that is kind of
9:59
my specialty . So , eat a tree is written
10:02
for anyone and everyone in
10:04
their health complications or in their performance
10:06
, but most of my private clientele are
10:08
in your boat of high performance , and
10:10
we've done lots of episodes of this as well
10:12
, but what you can do is the same types of things
10:15
. Your objective for testing your body , though , is different . You
10:17
want to fine tune and optimize . Just like
10:19
in business , you want to look at the funnel and
10:21
fine tune and optimize what's going on so
10:23
you can get the most of it . Same
10:25
with your body . So , as somebody who's looking for more
10:27
performance , anti-aging , longevity
10:30
, get the detailed lab testing down
10:32
on your body at least once a year to figure
10:34
out where you are . Do you have imbalances
10:36
that you didn't know about ? Did you catch a pick
10:39
, up , a parasite on that trip to wherever
10:41
Mexico , wherever right ? Like you , want to
10:43
keep on tracking your body , especially
10:46
as everybody you know , ages
10:48
. What are your hormones doing ? You
10:50
mentioned you have four kids . I have three kids . Let
10:52
me tell you I am not sleeping the best ever
10:55
, and so I know that
10:57
my body is not optimized , but
10:59
what I can do , even though I'm not sleeping
11:01
well , even though sometimes I do
11:03
stay up late when I'm traveling
11:05
or working or something like that . What
11:08
can I do to optimize regardless
11:10
so that my body can handle those hits and stay
11:12
well long-term ? And the way to do that is through
11:14
lab testing and then , of course , the day
11:17
, like part two and three in the book the daily lifestyle
11:19
and nutrition needs for your body .
11:22
Yeah , I want to get to that , but to stick with the labs
11:24
because this is interesting to me . So
11:26
again , most people would be like I'll have to go to the doctor and turn that in
11:28
. How can people find next
11:30
steps of that ? Like , do they need to find a functional medicine
11:33
doctor in their area ? Do they just like
11:35
go out to you and they can send their labs to you ? Like , what
11:37
would be the next steps if someone wanted to do that
11:39
?
11:40
This is going to be controversial , because not
11:43
all functional medicines I'm talking about
11:45
how awesome functional medicine is and it saved
11:47
my life , right and not all functional
11:49
medicine or integrated medicine practitioners
11:51
are created equally , just like not
11:54
every doctor is like the most awesome doctor
11:56
, okay , so I , in my healing
11:58
journey , I have been to a handful
12:00
of functional providers that were not good
12:02
and they wanted to just stick
12:04
me on like 20 supplements and they gave me this
12:07
big binder of this one size fits all plan
12:09
to follow for the next three months . It was not
12:11
good , so I guess
12:13
I would hope that you could find a functional
12:15
medicine practitioner or coach that
12:17
you love to work with . However it's
12:20
, the first one is a blow . Don't
12:22
give up because it's not always so easy
12:24
, but what I do love nowadays
12:27
is that you can be empowered
12:29
and take control of your own health , much like
12:31
I did as I healed my body and
12:33
went back to school to learn about how to heal my body
12:35
. You can do that for yourself now . So
12:38
someone like you , doug , or maybe a lot of your listeners
12:40
if you're motivated to find out what's
12:42
going on in your body , there are ways that you can
12:44
order your own tests and the lab
12:46
can give you a print off of your exact results
12:49
and you can go down that rabbit hole for your own
12:51
body optimization . And it's amazing
12:54
, and you can even . Actually , we have recently
12:56
partnered with a lab company that allows our
12:58
followers and audience to order their lab straight
13:00
from my website , so you can go
13:02
and just click through the labs I order our private
13:04
clients and get them yourself , and then
13:06
you have that power to find
13:09
out what's going on in your body , not have to hire somebody
13:11
, not have to wait for an appointment or
13:13
get off of a wait list . But it's a lot
13:15
more accessible of a price point because you're not charging
13:18
for any consulting or coaching . You just get to
13:20
order yourself .
13:21
Yeah , and we can include links to all of that in the show notes . So
13:24
would you still recommend that route to versus
13:26
functional medicine , or would you say everyone
13:28
kind of has to figure out what works best for them ?
13:30
I think everybody learns different and everybody
13:32
is in a different situation . Also , even financially
13:35
, sometimes it's a really large investment to
13:37
hire somebody , or
13:39
your functional medicine provider in town
13:41
might have I know . For me , one that I wanted
13:43
to go to was like a nine month wait list . Don't
13:45
wait nine months to take control of your health , like , get this
13:47
ASAP . So it really just depends . I
13:50
think in general , I
13:52
want to empower people to take charge of
13:54
their own health , and so I think you should learn
13:56
about your body and it's going to help
13:58
you to help yourself in a better way
14:00
. If you yourself are getting this
14:03
lab done and you get the print off
14:05
and you can read about your body , it's going
14:07
to soak in and retain more and it's , I
14:09
think , going to help you get better results than just
14:11
showing up to an office and being like what do I do ? And
14:13
then then telling you what to do but it's not going to stick the same
14:15
because you don't really understand the reasonings . Why so really
14:18
? I would go the less expensive , easier , faster
14:20
route and order your own tests and
14:22
then perhaps hire a coach , a functional
14:24
medicine coach or consultant or an online
14:26
practitioner to help you through your journey
14:28
. So , basically , I really think that to
14:31
take control of your own health in this
14:33
accessible way , but I do still see a huge
14:35
value of working with someone specialized
14:37
in rebalancing the body and
14:40
also someone who can keep you accountable to your
14:42
goals . So I do think it's still valuable
14:44
. It just depends on your situation .
14:46
Yeah . So the first step is to really just take
14:48
a step and take an interest in your health and
14:51
get blood work . So you sold me on
14:53
that . Actually , we put in our health insurance
14:55
this year like we are going to do that . So my wife
14:57
and I , we send out our blood work . It
14:59
comes back . We see the results . Now let's get
15:01
to the practical . How does this impact
15:03
our everyday life and lifestyle ? What
15:05
are the steps and what are the next steps after you receive
15:08
the results ?
15:10
Well , and it's not just blood . So some of
15:12
them might be like we have a three day stool exam
15:14
that I really love to do on clients saliva
15:16
, a hair test , urine , urine
15:18
test . So there's lots of different ways that we can test
15:20
what's going on in the body , but it's all kind of like the hard
15:22
, concrete information of
15:24
what's going on in your body right now . Now , based off those
15:27
results , either the lab is
15:29
going to tell you or your practitioner or your doctor will
15:31
tell you maybe some supplements or even
15:33
medications that you might want to take in this moment . And
15:35
again , like that's important to know , I'm not against
15:37
all medications . You might need
15:39
a medication to get you to that next
15:42
point of healing as you heal on your
15:44
journey . It's all about the right time , duration
15:46
and purpose , but you
15:48
also might be able to do it completely without
15:51
medications . But maybe there are some
15:53
core supplementations that are really going to help
15:55
you . For example , I said earlier on I had
15:57
really high aluminum levels . I
16:00
needed to detox my body , and eating
16:02
green leafies wasn't going to do that
16:04
enough . I needed some help , and
16:06
so like it is important sometimes
16:08
to take a supplementation or even a medication
16:11
in that interim . So you're
16:13
taking something to help your body , but
16:15
then you are doing lifestyle
16:18
and nutrition measures to
16:20
heal long term . So
16:23
with that we have a lot of different lifestyle
16:25
things you can do to detox daily without
16:27
supplementations or medications , but actually
16:29
detoxing , lowering inflammation
16:31
, a lot of mindset strategies
16:33
and then , of course , nutrition . So we can dive
16:35
into a lot of different aspects
16:37
, kind of where do you want to go for your listeners today
16:40
?
16:40
Yeah , I'd love to dive into the nutrition
16:42
specifically and just lowering
16:45
inflammation . What are some things we can do every
16:47
day to do that ?
16:49
Okay . So obviously I
16:51
could talk for 10 hours straight
16:53
on this , but a few core implementation
16:56
things that you can do today for your nutrition
16:58
is , I do find , if you are struggling
17:01
and depends where you are on the inflammation
17:03
spectrum , we have a quiz actually two quizzes
17:05
that tells you where
17:07
you are in the inflammation spectrum and your
17:09
type of inflammation , as well as
17:11
another one that tells you what your total toxic
17:13
burden is . So if you're I want
17:16
to preface this if you're , total toxic burden
17:18
level is like crazy high , you've got toxicities
17:20
coming in at you from all over the place , you're
17:22
so inflamed and you're feeling crappy . You'll
17:25
have to be a little bit more straight or have to do a little bit
17:27
more things in your lifestyle
17:29
and in your nutrition , whereas if you're coming
17:31
in maybe like you , doug , you work out , you
17:33
eat healthy , you're looking to optimize your total toxic
17:35
burden might be a little bit lower and
17:37
so you'll want to do some different things . So it really
17:40
is dependent on where you're coming from , but most
17:42
clients who are actively struggling
17:44
feel better when they
17:46
remove dairy and
17:49
grains and not just gluten . Most people are
17:51
like gluten free , but specifically grains
17:53
because they're hard to digest , so even like organic
17:56
, gluten free brown rice it's
17:58
. It might not help your body , but everybody
18:00
is unique so . But most
18:02
people feel better if they're inflamed
18:04
currently to reduce dairy
18:07
and grains and
18:09
everybody should focus
18:11
on more real food
18:13
, less packaged goods . So I
18:15
call this in the book like a refrigerator
18:18
and a pantry detox . So
18:21
, looking in your pantry or looking in your refrigerator
18:23
and get rid of all the things that are
18:25
expired I promise there are probably
18:27
things in there that like expired two
18:30
years ago and you just had no idea like
18:32
throw those out , make some new space for
18:34
the new , and then to look at
18:36
the things that you know are not great
18:39
for your body and find healthier
18:41
options for those things . Step one is swapping
18:43
. I've had clients who love
18:45
eating starburst every night Swap
18:48
their starbursts with just the organic
18:50
fruit juice . So , looking
18:52
at your pantry , looking at your fridge and finding
18:54
what could I swap ? A healthier
18:56
version of this Oreo , a better option
18:59
for my pasta , and you know this
19:01
. For this , what can you swap ? And that's
19:03
a huge . It's going to take your information down incredibly
19:05
in just one week .
19:08
And I'll speak to that . You know , when I was younger
19:10
I was I was heavier and always struggled and
19:12
really had to learn a lot about nutrition and
19:14
that , like when people come to me and ask me to talk
19:16
to them about how can they lose weight and get into
19:18
shape , I said , if you just track what you eat for
19:20
two weeks , I could tell you . Sub
19:22
this for this , of this , for this , and you'll see a massive
19:25
difference . Like I'm shocked . Yeah One
19:27
. I've never heard somebody starburst every night
19:29
. That's hilarious . I
19:32
love this advice . Yeah , just actually looking for
19:34
substitutes that are healthy and I'm sure
19:36
you can speak to this too it's not like
19:38
it's , it's less quality
19:40
, like the food's actually better taste
19:42
. Oh yeah , yeah .
19:44
It's so . Luckily in today's world there are
19:46
so many options for these swaps . You can
19:48
still have the exact same foods you
19:50
want , whatever you're craving . They're the healthier
19:52
option out there and it reduces inflammation
19:55
. You talked about weight loss . For
19:57
the people like who are coming to you wanting to lose weight , if
19:59
you had a client tell me after one week or anxiety
20:02
decreased by 75%
20:04
just from the food , this is because
20:06
of the ingredients of the food . It's not
20:08
that they're not eating sugar , it's that
20:10
the ingredients are higher quality , better
20:12
options and they're a healthier swap
20:14
. So there's less inflammation . It's amazing
20:16
and it's like you said . It's not
20:19
like you're not , it's not like you're eating salads every
20:21
day , like you can eat your favorite foods , just in
20:23
a healthier way .
20:24
Yeah , what is your thoughts on sugar in general
20:27
?
20:28
Well , I think reducing it is best
20:30
. So I keep saying the word reducing . The
20:32
reason is that I'm big on mindset
20:34
around nutrition too . I have worked with
20:36
a lot of people who have a lot of fear around
20:38
food or , you know , doing some
20:41
kind of diet or some of well , a wellness
20:43
journey throws them into eating disorders
20:45
or binge eating because they're restricting
20:47
and then they're going all out on the weekends things like
20:49
that , starting over on Monday . I could talk about this all day
20:51
long , but I really want to focus
20:54
on reducing , because if you
20:56
can focus on reducing things and then
20:58
adding and flooding your body with the
21:00
nutrients that it needs , when you're
21:02
adding like what can I add , what can I add
21:04
and then you're cognizantly reducing
21:06
the other stuff , your body will start to
21:08
balance out and you'll start to crave healthier options
21:10
. So , for your question about what I think about
21:13
sugar do I think it has health benefits
21:15
? No , so we can definitely
21:17
reduce that from our body , and if you
21:19
are focused on healing
21:21
your body you know I talked about grains
21:23
and dairy knock out sugar too , and you're gonna feel
21:25
better , right . So it's really , where
21:28
do you want to focus ? Do you want to feel really
21:30
a lot better . Right now , sugar
21:32
is not going to help you get to that goal , and
21:35
so we can reduce or eliminate that
21:37
. And then , when you do eat sugar , there
21:39
are healthier versions of that , like coconut
21:42
sugar or fruit sugar , that you can
21:44
sweeten things with .
21:45
Yeah , so your book's called Eat the Treat . So
21:48
in general and I want you to coach me here like , be
21:50
strict with me . Whatever you would tell your client , like I'm
21:52
big on like the 80s , 20s , 90s , 10s I
21:55
try to eat pretty healthy most of the time but on weekends
21:57
like one weekend night a week , like
21:59
with the kids I'm like I love ice cream so
22:01
it's like , hey , we're all having ice cream tonight . Like in
22:04
general , we'll once a week offset
22:06
. You know the results that you've achieved over the last six
22:08
days . I'm just curious your thoughts on actual
22:10
days or cheat meals .
22:13
Yeah , no , it doesn't . So , just
22:15
like , eating one healthy meal is not going to
22:17
heal your body , so you can't expect to eat healthy
22:19
for two days and then be like it's not working , like you can't expect
22:22
that . But one ice cream
22:24
cone on a Saturday night with your kiddos isn't either
22:26
. In fact it might actually help
22:28
your body because maybe it brings joy and happiness
22:30
and memories . So I'm big on that
22:32
and in fact that
22:35
it reminds me of a client one time who
22:37
, like , apologized to me because they ate
22:39
like a piece of pie at like , this family gathering
22:41
and I'm like , dude , eat the
22:43
pie . It was a spell and I just
22:45
felt , you know , that anxiety
22:47
and that worry and that stress and the fact that he even apologized
22:50
to me on a meeting the next week . That
22:52
causes more damage than eating that pie
22:54
in and of itself the mental
22:56
stress and mental inflammation
22:58
of that . So for me I
23:01
really like the balance of
23:04
that , but then enjoying it , it
23:06
also so say this is , this is
23:08
all about the mindset around nutrition . Say , you're eating
23:10
that ice cream cone if you're like , oh my God , I
23:12
have to go to the gym extra tomorrow . I shouldn't be doing this
23:14
. Maggie's going to be mad at me . This is going to ruin all my things
23:16
. It's probably going to
23:18
cause your body damage . This also your
23:20
stress and your causing your body anxiety and
23:23
your sympathetic nervous system is
23:25
going off , which causes inflammation . And
23:27
when your sympathetic nervous system is off
23:29
, your digestive system or when
23:31
your sympathetic is on , your digestive system is
23:33
off and so now you can't
23:36
even properly digest that ice cream cone
23:38
and everything's a mess and your stress . But
23:41
if you just eat that ice cream cone and you're like this is the best
23:43
day ever , I'm so freaking grateful for my family . Oh
23:46
my gosh , this is amazing . What a beautiful
23:48
sunset . You're calm , your
23:51
parasympathetic nervous system is activated , so
23:54
you're going to be able to digest that cone
23:56
properly and you're enjoying your life and your time . So
23:58
hopefully that explains that . That
24:00
would be my true advice to everybody in that situation .
24:02
No , I think that's so good and , taking mindset
24:04
into account , enjoy as well . You
24:06
mentioned we've been talking we both have children
24:08
. Now this is really important . So like
24:10
I had no boundaries growing up , like
24:13
I remember if you ever seen Home Alone when Macaulay Culkin eats
24:15
like 10 scoops of ice cream with everything on him , like
24:17
I used to do that , which is terrible . So
24:20
I feel like you know , for my wife and I , you know we value health , we
24:24
want to make sure we raise healthy kids , but I'm sure it's the same with you , the
24:27
on the go lifestyle , like four kids under seven , this one's got to go
24:29
, like it's insane . And I'm just
24:31
curious what advice do you have to parents
24:33
out there , like how
24:35
can we really set up our children for success when
24:37
it comes to health and nutrition ?
24:38
Yeah , so for for me , I also have
24:40
three kids and they're all . I had three kids
24:42
within three years , so they're
24:44
all very young . Yes , so
24:47
, but for me it was a little
24:49
bit opposite is that when you grew up , you had no boundaries
24:51
. When
24:53
I grew up , I saw a mom who was always
24:55
on a diet , to be honest , and always
24:57
wanted to lose weight and always was frustrated
24:59
or thought the ice cream code was bad Right , and
25:03
so I had kind of an opposite
25:05
effect where I viewed
25:07
food as bad or good , or if I wanted to be skinny , I needed to
25:09
eat less things like that . So
25:12
for for me , in general , I feel with our children
25:14
, I'm very balanced around it . I'm big on the mindset
25:16
around nutrition . We only we really only
25:18
buy organic . I'm
25:21
grateful we buy organic . Our whole house is gluten free , dairy
25:23
free , except for some goat cheese , and
25:26
that is just our norm . And we have
25:28
candy , but we don't have that . And we have candy
25:30
, but it's the organic , healthier
25:32
versions of candy , and
25:35
that's our norm . We make cookies and muffins
25:37
and brownies . It's the healthier versions
25:39
of those things . Now , so
25:41
our kids inflammation is automatically
25:43
lower , but they're still eating this brownie . They
25:45
don't even really know the difference . They love this stuff
25:47
because it's so good . But
25:50
the key thing is when they are out
25:52
, if they're at a birthday party , if we're out to
25:55
eat , I'm not judging
25:57
or telling them what they should or shouldn't have
25:59
. So if they are wanting to order
26:01
mac and cheese off this menu , I'm like amazing
26:03
, that looks so good . How is it I'm
26:05
not telling them ? You know , you shouldn't really have it if it's
26:07
not gluten free . So I'm really
26:10
balanced around . I don't
26:12
want them to binge eat , I don't want them to fear food
26:14
and I don't want them to have a negative mindset towards
26:16
this . But of course I want them to be healthy
26:18
because I care about them . I don't want to flood my children with
26:20
food ice and artificial flavorings and
26:23
things like that . That is a very standard , for the
26:25
American diet at least . So I care
26:27
about them . So I don't want them to eat those foods
26:29
, but I also want their mindset . That's my approach
26:32
to things . We have healthier swaps , but
26:34
I'm not freaked out if they eat Domino's
26:36
pizza on this Friday school day or
26:38
whatever it is .
26:40
Do you have any favorite like go to snacks
26:42
, or like quick on the go foods before
26:45
school or anything ? I would love to hear .
26:47
Yes , this is like one of my favorite things because
26:49
we are so we're so . I
26:51
feel like , I guess , normal
26:53
in the sense of busy on the
26:55
go , you know , grabbing the snacks but
26:57
healthier options . Some of my favorite
27:00
brands Siate is a great one
27:02
, so S
27:04
I E T ? E . They make a lot of
27:06
great condiments , as well as
27:08
wraps , like our kids love their Siate
27:10
wraps . They have crackers . They have all
27:12
different things . We love simple mills this
27:15
is a shout out to all . My favorite ramp . Simple mills
27:17
is great . They have great cupcakes . We
27:20
do birthday cakes with them , brownies
27:22
. We also have crackers
27:24
that our kids love . Made good
27:26
. They love their granola bars , and
27:28
so do I . They're so good . So
27:30
, yeah , made good is a good
27:32
brand too . They've got granola bars , They've got little balls
27:35
cookies . And then I
27:37
would say the last most common one in our
27:39
household is a brand called Lesser Evil
27:41
, and Lesser Evil we love their popcorn
27:44
, and they have lots of other snacks too , like puffs
27:46
for the kids , and our babies
27:48
grew up on Lesser Evil . Little like the little puffs
27:50
, but they're the healthier versions that actually
27:52
have good things in them . So there's some good
27:54
brands I love . I could go on and
27:56
on , but yeah , we have
27:58
a lot of resources for your people . Obviously you're interested
28:01
in this too . There's so many . We have like a whole
28:03
huge like non-toxic pantry
28:05
swap list linking all of our favorite stuff
28:07
that you can get access to for free on our sites .
28:09
Wonderful . So , yeah , we'll include links again to that
28:11
all in the show notes . I
28:13
want to talk a little bit . Yeah , there's so much I
28:16
could go on for like two hours of this Talked
28:19
about on the food side . You talked about eating real food
28:21
. What should people be looking for , like
28:23
, if they have no idea what any of this means ? Like , what
28:26
should they start to look for in their food to tell
28:28
whether or not what they're eating is healthy when they
28:30
go grocery shopping ? And so do you
28:32
have any hacks for them ?
28:33
Yes . So if you have no idea , like , where
28:35
to start , at the grocery store , most
28:38
of the real food best
28:40
options will be the ones that are in the refrigerator
28:43
or with , like , the fruits
28:45
and veggies section , so actually a
28:47
real apple and real chopped veggies
28:49
and things like that , and then in the refrigerator
28:52
section , because that means it doesn't have preservatives
28:54
and chemicals , most likely . So , for
28:56
example , if you're getting salsa , the salsa
28:58
in the fridge section is probably more fresh and
29:00
better quality than the salsa at
29:02
the grocery store , and then the salsa expires in three years
29:05
from now . Right , because that makes sense , because it's like
29:07
food , but it lasts for three hours
29:09
. It doesn't make your three , three years . So so
29:11
that's a baseline . So if you flip
29:13
it over and you can't understand these ingredients
29:15
, it's probably not the best option for your body
29:18
if you're on a health journey and you can't
29:20
put in your body . So look at the ingredient
29:22
makeup Also , like the length
29:24
will make a difference . For example , I mentioned
29:26
made good granola bars . Their
29:29
ingredient length , their list
29:31
length , is way , way smaller than the other
29:33
options of granola bars or breakfast
29:35
bars , and so that indicates that it has less
29:37
ingredients , better quality ingredients and
29:39
real things for your body .
29:41
Yeah , I know there's an app I use occasionally
29:43
called food jacate . Are there any other apps that are
29:45
like helpful , that you would recommend people
29:47
, whether it's tracking and looking for substitutions
29:50
, seeing what's healthy and things , and to even bring
29:52
in you know another part of your book , the environmental
29:55
things ? There's some environmental
29:57
products we have in our house that could be damaging us
29:59
. Yeah , I'll just go off on that .
30:01
Yeah . So a newer app
30:03
that I've heard of recently is Yucca
30:06
, to say , like what the ingredients are about
30:08
. Ewg is kind of what I was initially
30:11
into . So EWG it
30:13
rates the items , say it's a shampoo
30:16
and it tells you how toxic it is
30:18
. So I'm going to focus on the lower levels
30:20
of the EWG . There are items for
30:22
your household that are EWG certified
30:25
, mean they're like the cleanest of clean , and then
30:27
I personally would try to get everything
30:29
as a level two or lower . Again
30:32
, it depends how serious you are about this . When I
30:34
was first healing my body , let me
30:36
tell you I would do anything to heal
30:39
, I was so done . So I
30:41
only use EWG certified
30:43
stuff for a very long time . I'm
30:45
going to do a little bit more flexible here and there and
30:47
I'll do an EWG two item . You know
30:50
, just like a little less . A little . Not
30:52
the best option , but definitely
30:54
a much better option in certain situations
30:56
.
30:58
I kind of dived into this already , but this is , this
31:00
is crazy , you know , for people who may not
31:02
be aware of these things . So you know , I think
31:05
everyone in general is aware of . Like , hey
31:07
, I could eat healthier , choose healthier
31:09
foods . But you know something , you know when
31:11
I first started learning like , hey , the items in my household
31:13
household can be impacting my
31:15
health , such as you know , I used to burn
31:17
Yankee candles all the time . I don't know if Yankee candles
31:19
themselves are bad , but cologne
31:22
, like , can you just talk about regular
31:24
household items that could impact health , because I
31:26
think it's mind blowing for a lot of people . They never think about that
31:28
.
31:28
Oh my gosh , it's completely mind blowing . And
31:31
it's mind blowing to me
31:33
now that , because I've been in this world for
31:35
so long , it feels like everybody should know this
31:37
now . But I still have people who
31:39
have no idea that the lotion that
31:42
they're putting on their body every single day is completely
31:44
toxic , or the makeup that they're using
31:46
, or that candle that they're you know they
31:48
have , or the plug in their wall that is putting
31:50
fragrance and toxins in their air every day
31:53
. Yes , so it's so bad . This
31:56
is all about part two in the book of environment
31:58
detoxification , and it's one thing that
32:00
definitely helped me in a huge way when
32:03
and actually it's one of my favorite parts to
32:05
, because it doesn't really require much discipline
32:07
to throw a Yankee candle and to replace
32:09
it with a more toxic version
32:12
. You write that that doesn't take life
32:14
A lot of revamping
32:16
in your life . It's an easier swap . Same
32:18
with household cleaners . Instead of using the
32:20
household cleaner you usually use , swap it
32:22
with a non toxic version . It's an easy win
32:25
. It's an easy win . So what you can
32:27
do is you can look in your house and
32:29
make a list of all the things that you use on a daily
32:31
basis for your household cleaning
32:34
items , things that are going into
32:36
your air , like fragrances , the water
32:38
that you're using today
32:41
, things that you're putting on your body it's
32:43
not just what you're putting in your body and eating , it's
32:45
what you're putting on as well Make a
32:47
list and then again , just like the pantry
32:49
, swap those things out with
32:51
an easy and easy swap .
32:54
I'm just curious like how , how big are the consequences
32:56
to some of these things ? You know , like
32:59
a long time when we bought our first house , like
33:01
I didn't know what radon was . I didn't know it was a big deal
33:03
. I didn't know radon was the second leading cause of cancer
33:05
and lung cancer . And so when I started
33:07
learning these things like hey , if we have high radon
33:09
levels in our basement , like we need a radon medic mitigation
33:12
system you know to clear that out . Like
33:14
a lot of the things we're putting in
33:16
our body have the ability to cause
33:18
cancer and have consequences like that . How
33:21
serious is this ?
33:22
Yeah , I love that you're so into this because it's extremely
33:25
serious . I mean , people die
33:27
from radon poisoning if they're , if they're
33:29
, if they don't know about it and it's in their home
33:31
or what in the ground that their home was built on or whatever
33:34
it is , and it's extremely important
33:36
. And it's proven that certain
33:38
chemicals have led to cancers
33:41
and those chemicals are now banned
33:43
from our food and from our items . But
33:45
there are still things on the market that are newer
33:47
, that know they're not banned yet and , yes
33:49
, they're approved . But that has happened
33:51
in the past and now those items are proven to cause
33:54
cancers or to have health complications
33:56
and you know , infertility
33:58
, things like that , and so that happened
34:00
once before and it would be silly for
34:02
us to think that it might not happen again with some
34:04
of these newer ingredients and newer things that
34:06
are artificially made . So you
34:08
can always trust a natural
34:10
product that is made with real foods
34:13
, real ingredients , but I would
34:15
not always trust the chemicals , especially
34:17
the newer ones , because you just don't know
34:19
what's going to come out in 40 years from now
34:21
, because we definitely have proven that in
34:24
some situations , entire
34:26
product lines have been recalled
34:28
and taken off the market because , of that .
34:30
Well , thank you so much for writing this book . I'm
34:33
definitely going to be reading it and hopefully
34:35
people were inspired by today there's
34:37
. I could dive into all these subjects and mindset
34:40
. Is there anything else related to the book that you would
34:42
just leave listeners to ?
34:44
Well , the biggest thing to know is obviously
34:46
, we could both chat about this for days
34:48
on end , but that's really what the
34:50
book is . It's a one stop shop
34:52
for all of your wellness needs . It
34:54
is not just about what you should eat
34:56
, I mean , it's really about mindset
34:58
around eating , anti inflammatory
35:00
eating , healthy swaps and environment
35:03
detoxing , lifestyle , functional
35:05
medicine . It's a one stop shop
35:07
to your healthiest self and I'm just
35:09
so excited for y'all to get it .
35:11
Yeah Well , thank you so much for your journey
35:13
. Thank you for writing this book to help so many people . I
35:16
know you've helped hundreds and thousands of people already
35:18
, so again will include links to everything in the show
35:20
notes . We have a few minutes left
35:22
. I would love to . We won't get through all the lightning round
35:24
questions , but I would love to just ask you a few , just get to
35:26
know you a little bit better . The first one is what
35:28
is the best advice you've ever received and who gave it to you
35:30
?
35:31
My friend , JJ Virgin , who is also in the wellness space
35:33
, gave me this advice once I was having a tough
35:36
run in my journey of entrepreneurship
35:38
and I texted her and asked for some
35:40
advice and she told me CEOs , this
35:43
is tough love . And she told me CEOs
35:45
don't curl up and cry when things get tough , they
35:47
keep on moving . And I was like I
35:49
needed to hear that I'm not gonna curl
35:51
up and cry , I'm gonna keep on moving . And I really
35:53
think about that often and I'm like you know what CEOs
35:55
don't curl up and cry , like let's keep on going . And
35:58
that helped me a lot .
35:59
Love it . If you could put a quote on a billboard for everyone to
36:01
read , what would it say ? You , got this let's
36:05
go . When
36:07
you get to spend time with a JJ , virgin or other
36:09
leaders that you admire , do you have a go-to question
36:11
or two that you always ask ?
36:13
Well , whenever I'm around people who are doing bigger things
36:16
than me and have more experience
36:18
than me , I'm really kind of asking what
36:20
some main differences
36:23
in their business growth was . But specifically
36:25
for me , in my interest right now , it's team
36:27
growth . That's one area that I'm always
36:29
learning more about and I'm curious about how are you managing
36:32
your team ? Who are you hiring ? You
36:34
know all the different things , for team and leadership
36:36
is really my biggest interest right now .
36:39
Yeah , and we didn't even get to touch on any of your
36:41
business acumen and everything you do and coaching people
36:43
there . But just to summarize you basically
36:45
yeah , well , it's a
36:48
whole other .
36:48
we can come on up for part two . But
36:50
yes , I own another company in the business space , so I'm
36:53
myself an entrepreneur and we teach others
36:55
to build and launch their own companies on the wellness
36:57
space . So in that I obviously have
36:59
team members and I hang out with a lot of entrepreneurs
37:02
in all different industries , and so I'm always asking them
37:04
about their team growth .
37:06
What's something you've done in your life that you think everyone should
37:08
experience before they die ?
37:11
Oh gosh , oh
37:13
my gosh , I would say
37:15
. I guess travel . I've been really grateful
37:18
to be able to travel abroad
37:20
to many different places , even as a child . My dad
37:23
loves traveling and so I was
37:25
fortunate to get to go to really cool places
37:27
like Ireland and Italy and all these really
37:29
awesome places with my siblings growing up . So if
37:31
you never traveled anywhere , I would say that put
37:33
that on the bucket list .
37:35
All right , and if you could have coffee with yourself at any age
37:37
and you would have actually listened to yourself , what age would it be
37:39
and what would you tell that version of Maggie ?
37:41
Oh my gosh , eighth
37:45
, grade , eighth grade going into high school . I
37:47
would tell that version of Maggie to care
37:49
less , focus
37:52
on yourself , build your own internal
37:54
confidence and be you . And
37:56
because I feel as if those
37:58
years going into high school
38:00
and then college , it's easy to be formed
38:03
by the people you're surrounding yourself with and
38:05
we talk a lot about
38:07
. When you're older you can kind
38:09
of fine tune your circles , but when you're in high
38:12
school , going to school with kids the same , like
38:14
every single day in college , it's a little harder . So you
38:16
really have to find that internal motivation to be yourself , to
38:18
be confident , and that's what I would tell myself
38:20
more confidence and to be me .
38:23
Anything else you wanna leave leaders with today .
38:26
Oh , I'm just really excited for all of you guys . I hope this
38:28
inspires everybody to live healthier , happier lives
38:30
, because it's gonna help impact every aspect
38:32
of your life .
38:34
Maggie , thank you for your book , thank you for your time and we'll
38:36
do the skin sometimes .
38:37
All right , talk to you guys soon .
38:39
Well , hey , leader , thank you so much for listening to my conversation
38:41
with Maggie . I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did
38:43
. You can find ways to connect with her and links
38:45
to everything that we discussed in the notes at L3leadership
38:47
. org/ 406
38:49
. And as always , leader , I like to end every episode
38:51
with a quote , and I will quote Brian Tracy , who said this
38:53
. He said "'Leaders think and talk
38:56
about the solutions . Followers
38:58
think and talk about the problems . Which one are
39:00
you and where do you find yourself most often" . Well
39:02
, leader , I hope you enjoyed this episode . I hope it encouraged . You
39:04
Know that my wife Laura and I love you . We
39:06
believe in you and I say it every episode but don't quit
39:08
, keep leading . The world desperately
39:11
needs your leadership . We'll talk
39:13
to you next episode .
