Nerds and gigs. Welcome to another nerdtastically newsworthy edition of the legendary Saturday Nights
0:39
of the Nerd A roundtable yours, truly, King Nerdificent to Wala sharp in
0:43
the building. And if you do not know, I am a die hard
0:48
anime fan. Me and my son. Every Saturday night from like eight pm
0:55
until we are blurry eyed, we are watching every single animation we can on
1:00
crunchy roll and that is just what we do. We've been doing this for
1:04
years now. We will watch every single show that we can, and when
1:07
we get to the end of something or if it's on hiatus, that just
1:11
makes us find another show from Black Clover, you know our favorite, my
1:15
hero Academia Jiu Jitsu Kaizen. I mean, the list goes on and on
1:21
and on. We have been watching one piece probably since the days of Christ.
1:26
This show has been on so long. But that is what we do.
1:30
And so on April fifteenth, we will be celebrating a national holiday for
1:37
us. We will maybe take the day off from school and work and just
1:41
really lose our minds because April fifteenth is national on a May Day, a
1:47
day that celebrates the art form and its impact on broader pop culture. My
1:52
son sometimes dresses up like anime characters. Anime is everywhere. If you did
1:57
not know it, it is. It is a five billion dollar empire,
2:01
so trust and believe it's everywhere. I mean, I don't know if you
2:05
remember, but last year at the Anime Expo, some four hundred thousand fans
2:10
attended from all over the world. So you know this is not a nerd
2:15
thing. Okay, it's not a nerd thing. This is a worldwide thing. So this is not something you can say, whatever, what are you
2:21
all talking about. I know that I consider myself a bit of an expert,
2:25
but I want to bring on two verified experts. I am talking about
2:30
the host of the brand new show on crunchy Roll. Crunchy Role presents The
2:37
Anome Effect, which is a show that spotlights influences and the broader cultural landscape.
2:42
I want to welcome to the show the host of The Anime Effect,
2:46
miss Leah President and Lee Alec Murphy. How are you doing today? And
2:52
that's actually Murray. Yes, there's no p in that. Thank you so
2:58
much for having us on. I mean, that was a great intro. Like you mentioned, Anime Day is coming up on April fifteenth, this coming
3:06
week, and you know we're trying to take over tax Day. Hopefully,
3:09
hopefully we bring a brighter spin on that and can make it, can make
3:13
it anime day. Yeap, that is what's an anime? Happy ending,
3:19
take the stress off of filing and immerse yourself in anime. Uh miss resident.
3:24
First, let me start with you. What is your favorite and I
3:29
mean your favorite anime series? And this will really dictate the course of this
3:32
conversation, oh, without a doubt, And this is something that we talk
3:37
about a ton on crunch on. The anime effect is I will take any
3:43
opportunity whatsoever to talk about Attack on Titan. To me, it is peek
3:49
fiction. It is my favorite anime of all time. I've got an Attack
3:53
on Titan tattoo. I've interviewed the creator a Siama. Yeah, So to
4:00
me, I think that's a clear uh number one okay, And that is
4:03
a show that my son got me into because I'm I'm I'm a Dowdy mcdowdar
4:08
with a lot of series, some of them like man, I don't know, and he's always like, Daddy, just give it the opportunity, give
4:14
it a chance. And we start watching it. After a while, I'm like, oh, this is pure nightmare field. This is this show is
4:21
so intense. But I have got to say, I gotta admit I literally
4:27
was about to take my television off the wall and throw it out the window
4:30
with that series finale. That's the fairiest finale. I gotta tell you.
4:35
It just did me dirty. I was like, wait a minute, we
4:38
did all of that and that is the end. I was, oh,
4:43
okay, breathe, breathe, breathe, yes, okay, but that is
4:46
yes, that is a verified hit. I dig that, all right.
4:49
The Alex, what is your favorite automate series? This is such a difficult
4:57
question. They consistently jockey for position, and I'm gonna have to go with
5:02
the Dragon Ball z uh. That's the one that has that started my anime
5:08
journey, and it's one that you know, I consistently go back to,
5:11
like you know, I represent in daily life quite a bit. And then
5:15
also it's it's just it's it's one of those ones because it's it's always been
5:19
a favorite. It's been a very kind of comfort anime for me as well
5:23
too. Yeah, but you mentioned Black Clover. I love Black Clover,
5:27
like I think that series is absolutely fantastic. Full Metal Alchemist is another favorite
5:31
of mine as well too. Yeah, yeah, so yeah, there you
5:35
go. I mean I feel you because a lot of anime for me,
5:40
it depends on the episode that drops on a certain week. Like we started
5:45
watching Spy Family and literally we will be on the ground laughing at episodes,
5:49
and then all of a sudden, the series took a turn and it's turned
5:53
into this over the top action pat thriller, and we're like, what is
5:57
happening right now? That is like, you know, within a single episode,
6:00
it's jumped up to like becoming our favorite. But then you know,
6:04
they'll do something amazing on one piece and then out of nowhere, Jiu Jitsu
6:08
will have an episode that is just mind blowingly good. So yes, it
6:13
goes. It's one of those things where it just depends on the week.
6:15
I mean Mashley Muscle, we started watching that. At first, this is
6:19
like a joke for us, but then you really get into the series and
6:23
we're like, wait a minute, why is Mashley secretly one of the best
6:27
animes out there right now? What are people doing? Okay, and one
6:30
of the best openers too. Yeahs of the season it's a definite like last
6:35
season was it was a definite banger. Well, the way there are TikTok
6:40
videos right now, individuals actually doing dances to ye. It is everywhere.
6:46
And that is why I love anime is because it is really finding its way
6:51
into popular culture. Like I'm seeing every time I've seen a post from Doja
6:56
Cat, she's got some anime style that she's rocking Mega and the Stallion.
7:00
You know, she is going full on ontome. So this is is crossing
7:05
cultures, that crossing genres, is crossing every single thing. What do you
7:11
all try to do with your podcast in particular, Like, what is your
7:15
primary goal for for even doing this podcast? Uh, with the Anime effect,
7:21
the biggest thing is it's community. So we want to make sure that
7:26
you can come and hang out with us on our you know, fictional big
7:30
Orange counch and we're gonna talk about anime, right, We're gonna talk about
7:33
the news, We're gonna talk about everything and anime culture and adjacent cultures.
7:40
I mean, you brought up you know, Dojit Kat and make the Stallion.
7:44
I mean we you know, definitely referenced Meg more than a few times
7:46
on the show because she's been, you know, such a great flag bear
7:48
for the medium. But then we also want to interact with the fans.
7:54
We want to interact with you guys. It's like, what are your questions?
7:58
Like? We love to answer with your questions are We give recommendations every
8:01
week, and we also started calling out to get recommendations from or you know,
8:07
listeners at large as well too, So you know, the anime effect
8:09
is really about you know, us meeting every anime fan where they are,
8:15
whether you're a beginner, whether you're kind of at the midway part of your
8:18
journey, or if you're you know, you've been down the rabbit hole for
8:22
you know, more than a few years, and you know you're looking for something newer. You want to be a part of the bigger conversation. Leab
8:28
let me ask you now, Leam Leah, Leah, let me ask you.
8:35
One thing that's that's most interesting to me is how most individuals that I
8:41
know when I'm talking about anime, they always think that this is just something
8:46
guys are into, and I'm like, are you kidding me? I know
8:52
so many women who are into anime, and that is why it is probably
8:56
grown as much as it has is because it's not just something that guys are
9:01
into. It, Like it's something that just guys are into, it's not
9:05
going to grow. You have to have something that appeals to men and women
9:09
alike. What got you into anime? Yeah, for sure, So,
9:15
whether fortunately or unfortunately, I am a member of gen Z, so growing
9:20
up, you know, anime was a lot more accessible to me. But
9:26
you know, if it's any indication to how the impact of anime is really
9:31
taking over my generation, you know, we're talking about how it's it's you
9:35
know, infiltrating pop culture, infiltrating mainstream culture. Only about twenty five percent
9:41
of people in my generation overall are following the NFL, whereas about forty two
9:48
percent watch anime weekly. So I think, regardless of gender, I think
9:54
there's something for everybody in this storytelling medium because you know, it is it
9:58
is storytelling medium more than it is a genre. Because anything that you already
10:03
like in movies, in film and TV, you can find something that you're
10:09
gonna you know, really connect with and fall in love with an anime.
10:13
That is absolutely true. And people trip sometimes when I tell me that I've
10:18
watched a series that brought me to tears. And I'm dead serious when I
10:22
say, like, when I watch Girl, Login don't know if you've checked
10:24
that one out yet. It got to the end, Oh my god,
10:28
I was bawling. Not just you know, choked up. I was literally
10:33
bawling. I'm sitting here crying as if I lost a friend and I couldn't
10:37
believe it. I'm like, what is going on? Why? Yeah? I would that show series really really messed me up. And there's a few
10:43
series that have, I mean, I swear I don't know how they do
10:48
it, but they always managed to just really just work my emotions with my
10:52
hero. And it is the hero's journey is something that I get into.
10:58
And that is something that we see in a lot of anime series, the
11:00
hero's journey someone who who is an unsuspecting hero who just fights and fights and
11:05
fights them makes their way through the top, but never loses that that that
11:11
goodness in them. And I think that's something that really draws you into animeo.
11:16
What draws you personally into anime? You know, we we talk a
11:22
lot about it being, you know, a great storytelling medium because there's so
11:26
many anime genres that are for everyone. But then you reference you know,
11:33
just to use my hero as an example here. You know, not only
11:35
is it about you know, the hero's journey, but it's also a very
11:39
human story, right, So it's it's got a lot of stuff that you
11:43
can relate to. And I think that's why you know, anime is at
11:46
the peak that it is now, is because it's telling stories that connect with
11:52
people like any other medium does, like whether it be film or music or
11:58
you know, more Western animation or you know, stage plays like all of
12:03
those have you know, very human elements, and anime is really adapted that
12:07
more and more and more over the years. And on the anime effect,
12:11
we talk about that as well too, you know, the stories that not
12:15
only connect us, but you know also connect everybody else and create this and
12:20
create the fandom and the community. So I think for me, that's what
12:24
you know, draws me to like I love my hero. I think,
12:26
you know, Cochi does an amazing job, and it's really about the connection
12:33
and how much I connect with it. So Leah, let me ask you
12:39
for me. Growing up, I found anime easily because it was on television.
12:43
You know, you had be it gotcha min or speed Racer. When
12:48
I was really really young. And then the series that really changed my life
12:52
and begin to introduce me to the concept of storytelling and anime was Robotech.
12:58
Like Robotech is a series that it was literally just the soap opera. It
13:01
may have had, you know, alien attacks and mechacraft that could transform from
13:07
jets to robots, but the soap opera, the love story that it was,
13:13
the fight for humanity. It changed my life as far as what storytelling
13:18
in animation series work is when you watch series like He Man and Gi Joe,
13:22
it transformers back in the day, Yeah, it was part of a
13:26
bigger story, but each episode was isolated. It wasn't necessarily telling one big
13:33
story. But Robotech told a major story across three different arts. How is
13:39
your generation? How is Generation Z even finding animated nowadays? Because it's not
13:43
on after school television anymore like it was for me when I was a kid.
13:50
Yeah, I think streaming is king nowadays, you know, with so
13:52
much technology being available to younger generations. And that's what I love about crunchy
13:58
roll is it takes away the intimidation of trying and finding something new, because
14:05
you know, you're you're talking about these lengthy stories that have like all these
14:11
different elements in it, and I think some people can have the misconception that
14:15
anime is just one thing, like it has you know, tropes and is
14:20
silly and goofy. But you know, like I was saying earlier, there's
14:24
something for everyone. There's stories that you know, connect with every walk of
14:28
life. And that's something that's unique about our podcast as well. The anime
14:33
effect is you know, Lee and I and Nick, who's our third co
14:37
host, we all have different journeys with what connected us to anime and we
14:43
all have you know, different backgrounds in that and that that just shows the
14:48
diversity of our community and how you know, anime it doesn't just reach one
14:56
audience. You know, we're talking about gen Z. I think it's like
15:01
something like for of gen Z watchers have even had crushes on anime characters or
15:07
something wild like that. Yeah. So yeah, it's definitely you know,
15:13
reaching out to anyone who's interested. I love crunchy Role because every time you
15:20
go onto the app, not only will it introduce you to new series based
15:24
on what you've watched, but I love how crunchy Roll breaks down different genres.
15:30
You know, for whether you want action or if it's love stories or
15:33
you know, comedic do us. I mean, I love how Crunchy Role
15:37
really tries to introduce you based on something that you may like. And when
15:43
I say something you may like, not a title, but just a genre
15:46
of entertainment that you may like. What do you think is the biggest selling
15:52
point overall for Crunchy Role, LEI, The biggest selling point is that there
15:56
is something for everybody. So, like you said, you log into the
16:00
crenchy Roll app and you know, the the more that you watch, the
16:04
more it's going to start recommending to you. So you know, for instance,
16:07
mine, you know when I log in, mine is all over the
16:11
place because what's so many different genres. But you know that's the cool thing
16:15
is that because you know there's as an anime fan, like, you can't
16:18
watch everything, right, so you know the stuff that you know maybe kind
16:22
of in your your blind spot that you haven't watched, or you see a
16:26
show that's you know, really you know interesting that you want to give a
16:29
shot to. That's the beautiful part about the platform is that you're going to
16:34
once you really dig in and you're like, I'm going to start I may
16:37
just start watching the stuff that I know, and then gradually, you know,
16:41
the platform is going to grow with you. You're going to start finding
16:44
a lot of different stuff that you're going to like, even if it's genres
16:47
that you're not really familiar with. You know, I started watching a lot
16:51
more you know, Slice of Life titles recently, just because you know,
16:53
a lot of the action titles that are coming out are very dense and very
16:57
heavy, and I need a break. Yeah, yeah, that's the that's
17:00
you know, that's and I think that's great. Yeah, it's definitely easier
17:04
to branch out into unfamiliar territory, you know, more and more when everything
17:10
is just in one place like that. Because we're talking about like anime origin
17:15
stories. I did start with more of like a Slice of Life romantic comedy,
17:19
and now my favorite anime is Attack on Titan. So if it's any
17:22
show of you know, how how unique the the medium is. I think
17:29
that's a testament to that. I bury the lead because the reason that I
17:33
have you two on is because of your podcast Crunch role presents the anime effect.
17:40
Where can our listeners find your podcast? When does it air? You
17:45
know, how many years has it been on? Tell me? Okay,
17:51
We're everywhere, so anyway your podcast, so whether it be Spotify and Apple
17:56
Music, if you want to watch the vision usual episode, we're up on
18:02
YouTube and on the Crunchy World platform actually, so every Friday you can get
18:07
audio and video and then you know, on Saturdays, we're also on you
18:12
know, the our Crunchy Rold Winning your channel as well too, So that's,
18:15
uh, you can find us just about everywhere. We dropped off Friday.
18:18
We dropped an episode yesterday which was we actually dug into the mail bag.
18:23
We had an oops all mail bag episode because people are really interacting with
18:27
the show and we you know, want to make sure that we see what
18:32
you guys are, you know, asking and recommending. So it's it's it's
18:36
it's been absolutely great, Like we're only we're only in you know, the
18:40
first inning of the show right now, like we just started this year, but you know we've got we've got a lot more game to go. I
18:45
love it. I absolutely love it. And where can our listeners follow you?
18:51
Personally? Uh? Leah? And you know, I know it's always
18:53
like I don't want to put my socials out there, but where can our
18:56
listeners find you? So I think that I am a unicorn within my generation
19:02
because I barely use social media, to be honest, I know, right
19:07
a gen z that isn't on that iPhone. But but yeah, I don't
19:11
think i've posted on socials in like three years or something crazy like that.
19:17
No personal following. Yeah, yeah, Like I think something that's also unique
19:22
about our podcast is like we are not influencers, like we work in anime.
19:26
It's something that we're super passionate about and I think it's just I speak
19:32
on behalf of Lee here also, but it's kind of like a dream come
19:37
true. It's like being able to make your passions into your livelihood, which
19:41
rarely ever happens. So yeah, super grateful for that. Oh well,
19:45
then the best way to find you all is by watching the podcast crunchy Roll.
19:52
Since the anome effect you said, New episodes drop every Friday, correct
19:56
every Friday, every Friday, available on all platforms where you can find a
20:03
podcast, but you can also find it by downloading the crunchy Roll app.
20:07
I actually suggest that I talk about all these shows all the time that I'm
20:11
watching on my own show, and where I'm watching them all is on crunchy
20:18
Roll. And of all the streaming apps that I have, crunchy roll is
20:21
the one that I am most invested in. If like, if I have
20:25
to cut every other app, you know, if I'm looking at finances,
20:27
I'm like, oh, I'm abot to cut this app. Crunchy Role is
20:30
not going anywhere. It is not going anywhere. It is my life's blood.
20:34
So I thank YouTube for keeping everyone to know with everything out of may
20:41
I salute you and what you do, and I thank you for joining me
20:44
today. Oh it was a pleasure. Thank you for having us for sure.
