Welcome to the Lion Within Us , a podcast serving

1:13

Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends

1:15

you to be . I'm your host , chris Granger . Let's

1:18

jump in . All right , guys , it is

1:20

your meat episode of the week . I'm excited to have

1:22

you here . We're going to get right into our scripture

1:24

, okay , because you know that's how we're going to start every week

1:27

Proverbs 18 , verse 14 , just one verse

1:29

making it super easy this week . A man's

1:31

spirit will endure sickness

1:33

, a crushed spirit

1:35

who can bear . I

1:38

really want you to think about that , that crushed

1:40

spirit , because maybe you're

1:43

listening right now and you still don't

1:45

have any joy in your life . You're having a tough

1:47

time , maybe it's a difficult season

1:49

. You just feel like you know what ? I

1:52

don't know how I'm going

1:54

to ever just get better . Scripture

1:59

like this gives us insight . Highly

2:01

encourage you to go back , listen to the spiritual kick

2:03

off , because I unpack this at length . Then

2:06

I'll also encourage you to listen to this conversation

2:08

with Christopher Cook , because we have a

2:10

deep conversation

2:12

around healing . What

2:15

does that look like and how you

2:17

can move forward . Practical steps , practical

2:19

steps you can to move forward

2:21

, to heal the hurt that's there

2:23

, because you can't erase it , guys . You can't erase it . You're

2:26

going to have those scars . We have the

2:28

scars . They're not going to go away

2:30

, but you can heal

2:32

. Christopher is a pastor

2:34

, he's a leadership coach , he's

2:37

a podcast host . He is all

2:39

about transformation and wholeness

2:42

. This new book , healing what you Can

2:44

Erases is phenomenal . It's really

2:46

phenomenal . He has a lot of

2:48

strategy , a lot of execution within this book . He's

2:53

just a very clear type of thinker

2:55

. It's not going to try to go into all

2:57

these different realms , he's just going to speak truth . He

3:00

has a weekly podcast called when Today with Christopher

3:02

Cook . He is really about just

3:04

being a wholeness and

3:07

working that transformation together

3:09

. Just for the listeners out there , I

3:11

think this is a big deal because this is

3:13

not about self-help . No , this

3:15

is about transformation . About transformation

3:18

. It starts from the inside out . You

3:21

know , if we're being transformed , that

3:23

means we need to first surrender . I

3:25

think you're going to enjoy this . He comes from Detroit , so

3:27

we talk a little bit about football . We get a lot

3:29

going on . He's good buddies with our

3:32

friend , dr John Deloni . Lots

3:35

of fun times here talking with Christopher . He's

3:37

real , he's raw , he's open , he's

3:39

transparent , he's authentic . There's

3:43

nothing here in this conversation , guys . It's fake

3:45

. If you're struggling right now

3:47

, if you've got some hurt that

3:50

you haven't dealt with , that little

3:52

thing that's gnawing on your back , maybe

3:54

you're feeling condemned . This is

3:56

going to help . So enjoy this conversation

3:59

with Christopher Cook . So

4:04

, christopher , welcome to the Lion with Inners . How are

4:06

you doing today ?

4:07

It's great to be here , Chris . Thank you for the opportunity

4:09

.

4:10

Oh , I'm excited to have you here , so fun . And

4:13

before we even get into any of the stuff , with the

4:15

book and what you got , going on that we planned . Give

4:17

us a fun fact , Maybe something about you that not

4:19

many people know about .

4:20

Well , I'd say the majority of people in

4:22

the podcast space know me as

4:24

a podcast or podcast host author

4:28

, but I actually have been

4:30

a professional musician for over 20 years

4:32

. Music

4:34

has been my go-to , my staple

4:36

, since I was a teenager . I'd say I stepped

4:38

into it professionally in my early 20s , early

4:41

to mid-20s . So

4:45

as a musician I played internationally

4:47

. I played on over 100 records . In

4:50

2012 , I played for the president of

4:52

the United States in a private dinner party . I

4:55

had Peach Cobbler with Aretha Franklin

4:58

at her home here in Detroit . So it's like

5:00

, yeah , not many people know me

5:03

as a musician , but it's crazy because there

5:05

are some movie trailers that I played

5:07

on that . People like , oh yeah , I saw that trailer and

5:10

I'm like , yeah , I played on that . So that's

5:12

, there's your fun fact .

5:13

That's cool . So what's your ?

5:14

instrument Keys . Keys

5:16

is I play keys and bass guitar Keys

5:19

is really the main

5:21

stay , if you will .

5:23

Okay , very fun .

5:25

I mean , I live in Detroit , right , so I

5:27

grew up on gospel and

5:30

R&B as

5:32

well as pop . So , like my as

5:34

a musician , I lean

5:36

toward R&B , gospel

5:38

, funk , jazz , and we've

5:41

got such a rich heritage

5:43

here in the Detroit area . I mean , as I mentioned , like

5:46

Aretha Franklin , stevie Wonder was born

5:48

in our North of me Hitsville

5:50

, motown , it's all here . So

5:52

I love our city and I'm so thankful , I'm

5:55

so grateful to be a musician in the city

5:57

of Detroit .

5:58

Amen , amen . Well

6:00

, that was a fun fact for sure . So we're here

6:02

. We're going

6:04

to be talking about healing , which you can't erase the

6:07

book . It's phenomenal . So

6:09

excited to unpack this one with you

6:11

, for our listeners out there , I was telling

6:13

you before we started it was , it was . It was a heavy read

6:15

because there were some really hard areas

6:17

that . That , just it rocked

6:20

me . I mean at some points . A lot of times I read

6:22

when I'm working out and I just had to stop . I was like

6:24

wow . This is big stuff . So

6:26

I mean , maybe give us a little insight here to

6:28

your story and some of the things that

6:30

that led you to . You know wanting

6:33

to put this topic of healing into

6:35

words .

6:36

Yeah , what a great question . Okay , so

6:39

I'll tackle this a couple of different ways because I utilize

6:42

, as you read in this in the story , my

6:44

own journey . You

6:46

know , early when I was a little boy , my mom

6:48

was diagnosed with terminal cancer . I was

6:50

11 , almost 12 , and

6:53

as a family we fought that

6:55

hard for 18 years and

6:58

my sister and I had to grow up quickly

7:00

. Although we live in a very

7:02

safe and stable household

7:05

, you know there were just

7:07

aspects of life growing up that we

7:09

had to step into maturity quickly , and so

7:12

, you know , cancer

7:14

ebbed and flowed out of most

7:16

days , conversations

7:18

, you know things got really , really bad

7:21

in 2006 . And then from 2006

7:23

to 2012 , late

7:25

2012, . When she passed , I

7:27

mean , it was a nightmare at like around

7:30

the clock , and

7:32

so the day she passed , november

7:34

21st 2012

7:37

, was the day before Thanksgiving

7:39

, and you know I dive into the story

7:41

at length in the book , and the first chapter of the book but

7:44

, interestingly , because

7:47

of the accumulation

7:49

of circumstances after 18 years

7:52

in this Chris , my

7:55

immune system completely

7:57

crashed nine months after she passed

7:59

and I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and

8:03

like on the heels of grief

8:05

and so that just like knocked

8:07

me down while I already fell out

8:09

and

8:13

that really I'd

8:15

say was an inflection point in

8:17

the devastation of my own story . I mean , by

8:19

Christmas of 2013 , I'm

8:22

like I don't know if I want to live .

8:24

And I didn't .

8:25

I don't want to make light of things like suicidal

8:27

ideation . It's such a big deal and I have

8:29

great compassion for for people who

8:31

are in that . But it is to say , and I did

8:33

not consider acting upon anything but I

8:36

remember Christmas Dayling and my bed is these heavy

8:38

, cold tears just ran down my face

8:40

and I said I don't even know why I'm living . You

8:43

know , I've been knocked down

8:45

while I already thought I was out and

8:47

at my lowest and it

8:51

really was

8:54

a painful season of my life . I gained

8:56

a level of normalcy I'd say I

8:59

don't know by spring of 2014, . But it

9:02

all came crashing down again and

9:04

I later was diagnosed with complex post

9:06

traumatic stress disorder and like 20

9:09

panic attacks a day and life

9:11

was so . It

9:13

was like Groundhog Day . And it was really really hard

9:15

and , chris , I found myself going I'm

9:18

just going to simplify and

9:21

slow my life down to be

9:23

as predictable as possible but

9:25

the motivation was fear . Fear of

9:27

what ? Fear of losing more control . So

9:29

that's the flyover of

9:31

the story . But I'll answer the second part of

9:33

your question of like why , why

9:35

now ? Why put this in this book ? Why this

9:37

message now ? Well , there's

9:41

no doubt that we are in

9:43

a worldwide mental health crisis right

9:45

now , and a lot of that was inflamed through

9:47

the pandemic four years ago and all that

9:49

. But

9:52

the passion point for me comes because

9:55

the self-help industry has

9:57

responded to this mental health crisis

9:59

with feel good promises

10:01

. It just cannot deliver , and so

10:03

what it leaves people in , what it has left

10:06

people in , is this state of confusion

10:08

and being stuck and feeling

10:10

just a sense of despair . And so healing

10:12

. What you can't erase really is not

10:15

only the testimony of my life , but it

10:17

is a clarion call to all of us to say

10:19

you're not going to find hope in healing

10:21

within yourself . You do not look inside yourself

10:23

to find your true self . Psalm 121

10:26

says we look up . Our salvation comes from

10:28

above , and so you

10:30

know , we can nuance this as you wish , but suffice

10:33

it to say I'm sick

10:35

of the empty promises that we find

10:37

in self-help and self-healing . It

10:41

has left people confused , as I said , and

10:43

just in states of regret and

10:45

despair . And so that's

10:48

really the angle and the passion from

10:50

which I wrote the book , because

10:52

I want to see

10:54

people get free , chris , and

10:57

stay free .

10:58

So that's the flyover , Love

11:00

it . I mean , such an impactful

11:02

area is there and just coupling

11:05

your panic around the multiple sclerosis

11:07

. I'm just curious on the panic attacks

11:09

because you know I was . I've

11:11

experienced those probably 10

11:13

years ago Well , no , 13 , because my oldest daughter's

11:16

really , and that's when they started . But

11:19

they've gone away . I mean , I don't struggle with

11:21

that anymore . I still struggle with anxiety from time to time

11:23

. But , panic attacks . I know for a lot

11:25

of guys out there . You know it's

11:27

good just to hear how it impacts

11:29

different guys , you know , in different ways . So for

11:31

you , just kind of give us a little insight

11:34

. What was that ? What was those feelings

11:36

like , just as you were going through that Was

11:38

that ? I know , for me the heart races

11:41

, the cold sweats and things like that . I

11:43

was just curious how did it impact you directly

11:45

?

11:46

Physiologically , or like in my mental

11:49

state . Physiologically , yeah

11:52

, shortness of breath , just

11:55

a tightness in my chest , feeling absolutely

11:57

trapped , feeling stuck , feeling

11:59

like , if I wanted to walk , it was like

12:01

walking through quicksand , so it was , in

12:03

a way , immobilizing

12:05

. I mean , the cold sweats , the clammy feeling

12:08

, all of those were very , very

12:10

common . And so imagine

12:12

, chris , as I said , imagine having that

12:14

experience no less than 20

12:17

times a day . Unreal , unreal

12:20

, no exaggeration at all . So

12:22

, in effect , the majority

12:24

of my day was in that constant

12:27

state of dysregulation , and

12:29

hence that was the motivation

12:32

to create a very small , safe but

12:34

stuck life Right and

12:37

that whole .

12:37

you mentioned that idea around control . This

12:39

is where so many guys go , that they want

12:41

to control it , and when they get out of their control

12:44

, they start lashing out or acting

12:46

in different ways . I'm so glad you mentioned that one

12:48

word , because that's something that we have to recognize

12:50

. We're supposed to pick up our Frost and

12:52

follow Christ daily and we're surrounded by control

12:54

to Him . Yeah , that's a hard

12:56

part .

12:57

That's it . And here's

12:59

the big secret Chris , you ready ? We

13:02

can't control anything .

13:03

Amen to that .

13:04

We can't control outcomes , and

13:06

so the maniacal drive

13:08

to control is self-defeating

13:11

, and

13:14

the very things we

13:16

do to gain a sense of control

13:18

end up

13:20

exacerbating the pain we're

13:22

already in , and it's like driving

13:25

us deeper into the hole . And

13:27

this is why I even referenced Psalm 121

13:30

, because our freedom

13:32

, our healing , is not found by looking

13:35

inside ourselves . Our salvation

13:37

, our freedom , our healing , comes

13:39

as we look up and out

13:42

, not down and

13:44

in , and that is so contrary

13:46

to the messaging we're fed today

13:48

, which

13:50

is what excites me about wanting

13:54

to help people engage with this

13:56

level of healing from

13:58

the life experiences that can never be erased

14:00

. A lot of times in our faith experience , if

14:03

it's okay to add this we

14:06

think when Jesus comes into our life , we

14:09

have amnesia about our past . He

14:12

erases it . It's

14:14

not true . We

14:17

walk through life with scars , and those scars

14:19

tell a story of healing . But

14:22

Jesus doesn't give us amnesia about our

14:24

past . He redeems our past

14:27

. He restores

14:29

us from the inside out . It

14:33

is for maturity , it

14:35

is so that , having been transformed

14:38

, the Lord can use us

14:40

to be agents of transformation for

14:42

our generation . We find this as an example

14:44

in Isaiah 61 , and we

14:46

can go there to the extent you want

14:49

, but that's

14:51

what drives this passion for me 100%

14:53

.

14:55

And that's where the natural place to go next is

14:57

the transformation . So many guys

14:59

, maybe you talked about the power of transformation in your

15:01

book and so glad you did

15:03

, because that's where we need to be , because whatever

15:05

happens in our past divorces or addictions

15:08

or tragedies like that you've went through cancer

15:11

, these health diagnosis they don't remind

15:14

us . They're not the definition of who

15:16

we are . That's right , chris , but so it can

15:18

be very easy to get in that mind trap that

15:20

. that's where we live , so love where you don't pack

15:22

that idea of transformation and how

15:24

we can practically move that forward .

15:27

Yeah , so gosh , we can take this a

15:29

bunch of different ways , so please steer me , as

15:31

would be most helpful for the

15:34

folks joined with us today . But here's where I'll

15:36

start , and this is contrary

15:38

to the messaging found itself help , transformation

15:43

doesn't happen in a day . Transformation

15:46

happens daily . I want

15:48

to say that again because this requires our

15:50

commitment to

15:53

a process . Transformation

15:56

doesn't happen in one day . Transformation

15:59

happens daily and it begins

16:01

when we say all

16:03

right , lord , I'll say

16:05

yes , I'll say yes . That's

16:09

where it begins . Now I

16:12

can nuance this a little bit , if you'd like , regarding

16:14

the

16:19

power of transformation in our lives

16:21

and how that sort of stands opposite

16:25

of self-help strategies . Absolutely

16:27

One of the things you and I had referenced and

16:30

if you want to go here we can is talking about

16:32

the role of identity as

16:34

related to transformation . It

16:37

is to say this , chris , I think , like in life

16:40

, we'll never know what to do until

16:42

we know who we are . So

16:45

when we find ourselves

16:47

in a place of pain , loss

16:49

, hurt , hopelessness

16:51

, defeat , whatever , we

16:54

have to remember that we are the creation

16:56

, the specific creation , of a creator

16:58

. So when something's wrong

17:01

in life , I want to go back to the designer

17:03

himself to find out how I was

17:05

made to function and thrive and

17:07

then do whatever it takes to realign

17:09

with his plan for that . So here's the picture . This

17:13

is regarding transformation , because transformation

17:16

is systemic spirit , soul , body . So

17:19

folks lean in , listen

17:21

to this . I'm going to sort of paint a picture and then , chris , we

17:23

can pull the thread on this as you'd like .

17:26

Let's take a quick break and then we'll get back and we'll let these

17:28

guys here . This is a great point

17:30

. We'll be right back , guys . If

17:35

you're a man who's looking for greater spiritual

17:38

guidance into how to become a better leader

17:40

, finding resources that you can

17:42

trust and then implement can be daunting

17:44

For me personally . I thought

17:46

it was a lost cause and I decided to take the

17:48

action , knowing that I wasn't

17:50

alone . It was because of this wide

17:53

gap that we created our line

17:55

within this community , and the areas that we're

17:57

helping Christian men grow are incredible

17:59

. For instance , we've built ways

18:02

for guys to lean in and grow through fun

18:04

events like our daily spiritual kickoff

18:06

, where you get that much needed boost

18:08

directly from God's Word , our Bible

18:10

studies that always focus on how to discern

18:13

and apply what we learn , and

18:15

even our amazing form , where you can speak

18:17

your mind without fear of getting shut down or

18:20

judged by the extreme rules of modern

18:22

day social media . On top of

18:24

all that , we know that many men

18:26

won't help overcoming issues and becoming

18:28

stronger in many different areas . That's

18:30

why we created several mastermind groups where

18:33

their iron truly sharpens the iron Our

18:35

community is by having a gross

18:38

mindset , accountability , intentionality

18:41

and transparency . In other

18:43

words , just leave Fakie at home and

18:45

come to community just as you are . I

18:48

fully believe what we've built . I see

18:50

the impact it's making on men right now and

18:52

I would love to have you check it out . So

18:55

start your very own 30 day free trial

18:57

today to see how we can help you

18:59

be a better leader . So if

19:01

you're ready to take that first step , head over

19:03

to thelinewithinus and

19:05

get started . Your journey begins here

19:07

. This is thelinewithinus , and

19:10

I'll see you inside with Dan .

19:15

Alright , chris . So here's how this plays out . Again

19:17

, folks , the target is transformation and

19:20

the target the nuanced target

19:22

is knowing who we are . Again , I'll

19:25

make the statement I made moments ago In life

19:27

, we'll never know what to do until we

19:29

know who we are . So imagine this picture

19:31

when we forsake the ways

19:33

of our Creator , who is

19:35

our designer , we forget our design

19:38

. Our design

19:40

is our identity . When we forget our

19:42

design , we abdicate

19:44

our purpose . When we abdicate

19:47

our purpose , we ignore our

19:49

function . When we ignore

19:51

our function , we inadvertently forsake

19:53

the responsibility we have in this life

19:55

, for which we all

19:57

will someday give an account before the Lord

19:59

. It's like this I

20:02

have an iPhone sitting right here . If

20:04

I mistakenly identify my iPhone

20:07

as a doorstop , it

20:09

will function as a doorstop , but

20:11

that's not what it was designed to

20:13

do . So , in the same

20:15

way , when we don't understand

20:18

our design , we're going to fall short

20:20

in functioning at peak efficiency

20:23

and performance . Let

20:25

me tie this together with transformation . When

20:27

we face pain , loss , disappointment , crisis

20:30

, etc . Whatever

20:33

we misunderstand , we

20:35

misdiagnose . Whatever

20:37

we misdiagnose , we mistreat

20:40

. I want to say that again when

20:45

we're facing crisis , loss , pain . This is why I don't

20:47

believe in self-help when it comes to healing systemic

20:49

issues of our life Because

20:52

we have a limited perspective and we're

20:54

often looking through the lens of what didn't happen

20:56

, looking through the lens of a broken

20:58

spirit and pain and loss and hurt and

21:01

no one is invalidating any

21:03

of those experiences , but it is to say , as

21:05

you said earlier in the conversation , they cannot

21:08

define us . So when

21:11

we're looking through those unhealed lenses

21:13

, we're quick to misunderstand

21:15

our perspective on

21:17

life . So

21:20

here's the statement again Whatever we misunderstand

21:22

, we misdiagnose , and

21:25

whatever we misdiagnose , we

21:27

mistreat . That's

21:29

why knowing our identity is absolutely

21:31

crucial for transformation in life .

21:34

Where do you think I'm so many guys get the misunderstanding

21:37

wrong at then ?

21:38

Where does that one point Great

21:41

question yeah , so give me

21:43

a second . I'm going to look up the scripture because as

21:45

soon as you ask that , the

21:47

scripture jumped into my mind . It's Jeremiah 2.13

21:50

. I want to read it specifically so

21:52

the guys joined

21:54

with us can hear it . Chris

21:56

, I think this , honestly , is the answer . So

21:59

Jeremiah 2.13 says For

22:03

my people have committed two evils they

22:06

forsaken me , the

22:08

fountain of living waters , and

22:10

they have hewn for themselves cisterns

22:13

, broken cisterns , which

22:15

cannot hold water . Well

22:17

, these days , there are a bunch of broken

22:19

cisterns walking around life whose names are Jim

22:21

, tom , chris , Frank

22:24

, and we look

22:26

to pull life

22:30

, hope and healing from within

22:32

ourselves when in fact , we're broken

22:34

cisterns and there's a leak in that pot , so to

22:36

speak . That's why Jesus said

22:38

I am the fountain of living water . This

22:43

is where we get tripped up in

22:45

our self protective , self

22:47

promoting , fear driven

22:50

, shame , motivated temperaments

22:52

. Because of pain that has been

22:54

unresolved and grief that

22:57

has been ungrieved , we

22:59

go well , go at it alone

23:01

. I can only trust myself . So we look

23:04

to pull out rivers of

23:06

living water from within us . Jesus

23:08

said you know , when I dwell in you

23:10

, out of your innermost , being shellflow

23:12

rivers of living water , but when we're

23:14

not operating in wholeness . We're

23:17

pulling from a broken cistern . How is that supposed

23:19

to bring hope and healing

23:22

to anybody ? We are limited commodities

23:24

. I talk about this in the book and I'm so glad you brought

23:26

this up because , as

23:29

it relates to even willpower

23:31

, which is a

23:33

limited commodity at best , Right

23:36

. Here's the thing we

23:40

all have different capacities . Like

23:43

you and I , have even different capacities for

23:45

stress or whatever , and

23:47

it isn't . It isn't to say that

23:49

we can't increase our capacities , but

23:51

what it is to say is we don't have unlimited

23:53

capacity . None of us do so

23:56

. Therefore , even the strongest guy

23:58

listening to us today has a cap

24:00

, has a limit on the

24:02

wherewithal , the agency that he has

24:04

to bring lasting systemic

24:07

change to his life . This is why I say in the book

24:09

, and this is why my core message is that

24:11

transformation beats self help . All

24:14

day long . I say that every week on my show . That's

24:18

the point . We need help

24:20

and hope that is outside of ourselves

24:22

, right , right

24:25

.

24:26

Love that , Love it . I mean in that hope

24:28

and that help if we

24:30

can get , if we can get the good information

24:32

instead of the misinformation that's going to

24:34

lead to that diagnosis , that can be treated the

24:37

correct way , which is that's right , that is

24:39

the transformation . It's

24:41

exactly right , Absolutely

24:44

. Love that . You mentioned something

24:46

earlier . You said that

24:48

we can recognize when we have a broken spirit

24:50

.

24:50

Yeah .

24:51

That jumps out at me , like , just like

24:53

, hits me between eyes because I

24:55

don't know , if I look back at the course of my life

24:57

, if I could always recognize when I was in

24:59

that broken spirit . I think , I'm getting better at

25:01

that now . How can guys

25:03

recognize that ?

25:05

Yeah , so let me . I love this question , chris

25:07

, and I'm thankful . Man , I just got to tell

25:09

you on an aside I love your , I love

25:11

your teachable spirit , I love your curiosity . It

25:14

really just is making for a fun conversation

25:16

. So I just want to honor you for that . I

25:19

think you're great .

25:20

It's really cool yeah .

25:23

So let me just kind of set this up with the scripture again

25:25

. This is Proverbs 18

25:27

, verse 14 , out of the amplified translation

25:29

, amplified classic actually . The

25:32

Bible says the strong spirit of

25:34

a man sustains him in bodily

25:36

pain or trouble , but

25:38

a weak and a broken spirit

25:40

who can raise up for better ? Here

25:43

it is in another translation . Let's go on , and

25:46

I V the human spirit

25:48

can endure in sickness , but a crushed spirit who can bear

25:50

? So

25:53

we are spirit , soul and

25:55

body , and a lot of pop , psych

25:57

and self help deals with us on body

25:59

, soul , right , mind and body . But

26:02

but we don't go to the level that we need

26:04

to , which is human spirit , because the deepest part of

26:06

us is spirit , not soul . And

26:09

I don't want to nuance this a ton

26:11

because there are some theologians who

26:13

believe that the immaterial part of us is actually one . In

26:16

other words , spirit , soul is one . Scripture

26:18

, I believe , teaches otherwise , so

26:21

I'm going to go with spirit , soul and body . Is

26:23

three parts , right . So let's

26:25

define this broken spirit , chris

26:29

, in the experience of a broken spirit

26:32

we're not just talking about a difficult

26:34

season of life . We all experience

26:36

difficulty , but a broken

26:39

spirit is embodied by an unrelenting

26:42

, all encompassing sense

26:44

of absolute defeat and despair . Now

26:47

we could call it burnout , in a way lifelessness

26:50

, but I think it's deeper and more systemic than that . So

26:52

here's the picture . Maybe this will

26:54

help folks kind of understand how this plays out . If

26:57

our bodies were a boat and

27:00

our souls were a sail that steered the

27:02

boat's direction , the spirit

27:04

would be the wind and force that gives

27:06

life and motion to that sail . So

27:08

the Hebrew word , especially in Proverbs

27:11

, for spirit is ruach , which

27:13

is our inner drive for life . It's our courage

27:16

, our vitality , our vigor , our animation . So

27:18

when our spirits are broken , when the wind

27:21

in our sails is gone , what

27:23

goes next ? Our passion , our drive

27:25

, our desire for life too . This

27:28

broken spirit , I believe , is the

27:30

linchpin to transformation . So folks

27:33

listening are saying well , chris , okay

27:35

, you've defined this . How

27:39

do I know truly

27:41

if this is a broken spirit

27:43

versus , as you said

27:46

, maybe burnout or a difficult season ? Well , here's

27:48

what I want you to look for specifically A

27:51

level of drive

27:53

for every area of life

27:55

that is just gone , because

27:58

a broken spirit is pervasive . Yes

28:00

, 100% . It's not just like , okay

28:03

, well , works really hard right now and I'm really

28:05

struggling and I'm bummed out about it and

28:07

I have no passion , but at home I feel alive

28:09

. No , I'm talking like . The broken spirit affects

28:11

everything .

28:12

Everything Cross , some more yeah .

28:15

So , as I said , a common word

28:18

for it might be burnout , but I do believe

28:20

the broken spirit is

28:22

deeper and more systemic in its

28:24

reach than simply burnout

28:26

.

28:27

Very similar though . I

28:29

think it's very cool , though , that she also said the word rua

28:32

as part of that , because if you go back to Adam

28:34

, when God breathed , he

28:37

breathed the rule of life into his nostrils

28:39

. But that spirit was breathed into him and

28:42

that was the identity we were made in that identity

28:44

. And when we break the spirit man , it's like

28:46

we're breaking who we are in Christ

28:48

and that's just . But you're right , it

28:50

goes across the whole board .

28:52

You want another picture for that , because I think you touched on

28:54

something great there .

28:55

Okay .

28:57

So suppose

28:59

I had a garden hose hooked up to the house and

29:02

I was seeking to water the

29:04

soil . The

29:07

water source is

29:10

connected to the house and works just fine , but if I step

29:12

on that hose I'm interfering with

29:14

the flow of the water to

29:17

get to the soil and , in similar

29:19

fashion , our

29:23

life source , who is Christ ? Our lives are

29:25

hidden with Christ . He's

29:28

always there , he's always present , but

29:31

the broken spirit is like we're

29:33

suffocated and atrophied from

29:35

even realizing and assimilating

29:37

the very life into our

29:39

beings . Job said it this way

29:42

in Job 17 one . He said my spirit

29:44

is broken . There's the Hebrew word , I think it's

29:46

pronounced cabal , but the

29:48

picture is this , chris , it's like Having

29:51

a rope tied around a

29:53

lamb or something like that . Well , what happens ? If I cinch

29:55

that rope tighter and tighter , soon

29:57

after all of the circulation

29:59

to that limb will be cut off , and then

30:02

the limb will after feet . It's the same thing for

30:04

our life , so our life source , the

30:07

word who is Christ , will

30:11

unintentionally be atrophied in

30:14

our lives , and thus Creating

30:17

the perfect environment for the broken spirit

30:19

to thrive .

30:23

Do you think so ? Where it's , there's a lot of guys

30:26

who disconnect from . I've

30:28

talked to so many guys , chris from where they

30:31

talk about you know they don't need a church . I

30:33

don't need a church . I read the Bible when I do

30:35

my thing and do you feel

30:38

like that's contributing to

30:40

the , to the blindness

30:42

of the broken spirit that so many guys have ? Because

30:44

, I mean , I feel like we're meant to be

30:46

in a , in a body of believers

30:49

, as members in a body , and we try to

30:51

do this thing called life alone ? No

30:53

, to your point , there's some pretty strong dudes out there , but

30:56

everybody has their limit and I just feel like

30:58

there's such a gap where we guys are recognizing

31:00

the need For connection to community

31:03

with fellow believers , because we're

31:05

gonna have those trials come at us .

31:07

Yeah , community is critical . Community

31:10

is critical for healing . Scripture

31:14

talks about the fact that there is safety

31:17

found in a multitude of counselors

31:19

. Scripture talks about how iron sharpens

31:21

iron . We need community

31:24

to heal . Even God himself

31:26

is a community within himself . In

31:28

in Genesis , regarding the Elohim

31:30

, he said let us make man in our

31:32

image . Well , there's Jesus , there's

31:34

the Holy Spirit , there's God , the Father . He

31:37

in himself is a community

31:39

. So yeah , I'd

31:42

say that is a fundamental Requirement

31:45

for healing , for transformation

31:47

, for wholeness , for vitality in life

31:49

. It's , it's found in community .

31:51

We need people was that a big part of

31:53

your healing going through the MS

31:55

diagnosis ? I'm obviously I'm sure it was there

31:58

when your mother passed . I'm just curious , what

32:00

did that actually look like for you ?

32:03

Yeah , um , what

32:06

I found in community was an opportunity

32:08

and I talk about this in the book Learning

32:12

how to surrender . Not surrender as in give

32:14

up , but I'm surrendering meaning I'm giving

32:16

into a process of confrontation

32:18

, hard conversations , honest

32:20

conversations that would lead to transformation

32:23

. So sure in my in my

32:25

journey through counseling

32:27

and therapy after . It

32:29

was hard , but I wouldn't have

32:31

been able to get to the place of transformation

32:33

had it not been for my

32:36

community of believers . My

32:38

friend doctor Kirk Thompson , says this way we

32:40

have a Confessional community . Confession

32:43

is telling the truth . It's

32:46

it's yeah , it's not . It's not saying

32:48

I'm sorry , I'm sorry , I'm sorry . It's saying here's

32:51

the truth , here's what I'm feeling , here's

32:53

and I talk about that in the book as well- that's

32:56

so hard for guys .

32:57

They don't want to talk about the truth and transparency

33:00

and authenticity , right , we want to be very

33:03

surface level . So I'm so glad you're going there

33:05

.

33:05

Well , this is , this is the essence of vulnerability

33:07

. I believe the Latin root of the

33:09

word Vulnerable means

33:11

to , to risk being wounded

33:13

, mmm . So the Lord calls

33:15

us and in a way we

33:18

have to disrobe invulnerability

33:22

from the

33:25

entrapments , the incomparances , the hopelessness

33:27

, the the victim narratives . Again

33:30

, no one invalidates what we've walked through

33:33

, but if the very things that

33:35

we walk through become a source of identity , we

33:38

will find sufficiency in our deficiencies

33:40

instead of sufficiency in the one

33:42

who calls us by name . This is why Jesus

33:45

disciples Say

33:47

to blind Bartimaeus and mark 10 take

33:49

courage , get up , he's calling you . There's

33:52

a decided unwillingness to

33:54

Stay down

33:56

, stay on undercover and

33:58

keep ourselves hidden in fear

34:01

and guilt and shame and what

34:03

didn't happen . And it is so flipping

34:05

easy to create an identity out

34:08

of what didn't happen in life . But that's no way

34:10

to live and it's certainly no way to experience

34:12

transformation right right

34:14

. Because we here's the thing , chris

34:16

we don't have to take courage

34:18

, we don't have to get up and we

34:21

don't have to say yes to his invitation . Bartimaeus

34:24

, a blind man , did not receive

34:26

his healing until he threw off

34:28

his outer garment . Too many of us are wearing

34:31

outer garments of fear , shame , victimhood

34:33

. We've created identities

34:35

out of what didn't happen and the Lord

34:37

says I'm calling you into myself . Do

34:40

you want to be free ? What do you want me to do

34:42

for you ? Well , guess what ? Healing

34:44

comes after we decide to throw off

34:46

the outer garment that brought us a

34:49

level of security , but

34:52

we got to throw it off first . You know

34:54

Jesus in his first miracle

34:56

, when he turned

34:58

water into wine . Do

35:01

you know ? The servants at Cana had

35:03

to fill the pots with water first

35:06

before the miracle happened

35:08

. Healing can happen in an

35:10

instant and and and without

35:12

our assistance , and I celebrate that . I'm

35:14

so thankful . We serve a god whose name is healer

35:16

, jehovah Rafa , but transformation

35:19

Requires our decided

35:22

partnership . We have to say yes , and

35:24

here's the challenge . We don't have to

35:26

.

35:27

Right .

35:28

He doesn't force it upon us , right

35:30

, take courage to get up

35:32

. I'm calling you , chris

35:35

. Take courage , get up . I'm

35:37

calling you . No

35:40

, I'm good right .

35:43

I know a lot of guys , chris , for that . They

35:45

just I don't think they want to take

35:47

off that cloak . They don't want to put it to decide

35:49

, because if they do , they don't know who they are like

35:51

. Why I'm just , I am this alcoholic

35:54

, I am this , I am addicted to pornography

35:56

or whatever those things are . Oh man and

35:59

it's like alright , bro , really like

36:01

can I , can I , can I say something ? Yet

36:03

jump on it .

36:05

There might be men joined with us today who are saying

36:07

I am addicted to pornography

36:09

. I am an alcoholic , an alcoholic

36:12

and and being addicted to pornography

36:14

is not an identity . That's a

36:16

symptom of an identity . The identity is

36:18

I'm worthless , I'm forgotten , I

36:21

am Fundamentally and fatally

36:23

flawed . That's what's behind those

36:25

intravenous . Being addicted

36:28

to pornography is not an identity . We

36:30

got to get below the surface and go after when's

36:32

the first time you actually felt rejected . And now

36:35

you're going after a picture

36:37

that for $5 and five minutes , and

36:39

for five minutes you don't have to be rejected anymore

36:42

. This has nothing to do with sexual

36:44

addiction or pornography . This has to do

36:46

with a fundamental , root level identity

36:48

of I am a piece of crap , and I

36:50

felt like this because when I was a little boy

36:52

, someone said to me , or an event told

36:54

me , that I was and I received

36:57

that as an identity . And now I

37:01

can't distinguish trauma from freaking . Tuesday

37:03

, and there's an invitation to men listening

37:05

today , chris , to take courage

37:07

to get up , to throw off the

37:10

outer garment , to come to him in in

37:12

unabashed truth . Truth is

37:14

not saying I'm sorry . It involves I'm

37:16

sorry , it involves remorse . Truth

37:19

is In in the

37:21

true sense of confession . This

37:23

is what I believe , and the lord will

37:25

deal with this and that . Lord , I actually

37:27

am so scared to tell you that I don't trust you because

37:29

life has said that people and you

37:31

are not trustworthy . The lord can do something

37:34

with that , not this

37:36

, not this pretty dot packaged religious Um

37:38

dressing of how we address him

37:40

. No , no , no . He

37:43

is a perfect holy father and I never believe

37:45

in addressing him with pride , presumption or accusation , but

37:49

he is our father and and if

37:51

we want to be free , we need to approach

37:53

him in honesty .

37:56

Amen , amen . God

37:58

Christopher

38:00

is hanging on the rim right here . Fellas , we're going to

38:02

take a quick break . We'll be right back . I

38:07

find it helps me to have a guide at

38:09

times when I'm reading and studying

38:11

the Bible . One way that helps

38:14

me is by using devotionals to

38:16

God not only what I read , but

38:18

insights into the scriptures themselves

38:20

. So we were blessed

38:22

to become an author on the YouVersion

38:25

Bible app and we saw an immediate

38:27

opportunity to help others with

38:29

devotionals around the areas that

38:31

we spend the most time talking about at the

38:33

Lion Within Us . So if you enjoy

38:35

the show , you may enjoy these

38:38

devotes as well . We have some

38:40

guys that are using them as part of their small groups

38:42

as well , as they're a great

38:44

way to get conversations going . So

38:47

, to see the ones that we created , head over to

38:49

TheLionWithInus , and

38:51

that's Y-O-U-V-E-R-S-I-O-N . To

38:57

learn more . So that's TheLionWithInus

38:59

To

39:02

get started with your own men's devotional

39:04

today . So

39:10

, christopher , talking about transformation immediately

39:12

, when you talk about transformation , where a lot of Christian

39:14

guys go to be transformed , we

39:18

had to be renewing our mind , and then you put a very

39:20

good acronym together around seed

39:22

Speaking about that . I'd

39:25

love for you to just , high-level , break that

39:27

down because when

39:29

I read through that . It just there was so much value

39:31

there . I'd just love

39:33

to cover that here with you right now .

39:35

Yeah , I mean we could spend an hour on this . I'm

39:38

going to give you the flyover If you want to

39:40

take the deep dive and understand how to apply

39:42

seed to your life . It's in chapter

39:45

11 of my book . But basically the seed

39:47

method is this , and seed is an acronym . The

39:51

seed method is my four-step strategy

39:53

for renewing the mind , based upon the principles

39:55

of neuroscience and the scriptures

39:57

. This is about being

40:01

aware of our thought . Scientists call this metacognition

40:04

, so seed is an acronym . Four

40:07

steps , s-e-e-d . Step

40:09

one secure . We have to secure

40:12

our thoughts so that we're consciously

40:14

aware of them . Again

40:16

, this is what scientists call metacognition

40:19

being aware of our thoughts . So what we need

40:21

to do is , when we have a dominant negative

40:23

thought or a believed lie

40:25

2 Corinthians 10 , you

40:28

know , paul says take every thought captive . This is what we're

40:30

doing . We're holding that thought as if it

40:32

was a physical object in our hands

40:34

. We're going to maintain conscious

40:36

awareness of it . Step two examine . We're examining

40:39

the motivating factors of that

40:41

specific thought , with the

40:43

leading of the Holy Spirit . In other words

40:45

, when's the first time

40:48

the seed of this negative thought or

40:50

lie was planted ? What was ? the

40:52

circumstance surrounding the situation

40:54

. We investigate the roots

40:56

of the thought to deal with the

40:58

fruit of the thought , and

41:00

we do this in partnership with

41:03

the Holy Spirit , our counselor

41:05

, mentor , pastor , and the authority

41:07

of scripture .

41:08

Very important .

41:09

Step three , the second E is exposed . We

41:12

expose this thought now and the

41:14

attached lie to truth . When

41:17

we do that , it uproots its influence

41:19

from our minds . We do this with scripture

41:22

. Jesus said that

41:25

if we abide in his word or

41:28

his disciples , we'll know the truth . Rather , and

41:30

the truth will set us free . The

41:33

point of truth is freedom , which

41:35

leads us to step four . D

41:37

decide . We're going to decide

41:40

how to consistently

41:42

place our focus on the truth of the word

41:44

and that begins installing

41:47

a new thought into our minds

41:49

. For me , practically , this

41:51

looks like maybe writing a

41:53

truth statement from scripture on a post-it

41:55

note or a post-it note

41:57

card and I'm going to keep that on my dashboard

42:00

. I'm going to keep it before my eyes Because

42:02

the word of God , by

42:04

the power of the Holy Spirit , contains the power to

42:07

change our lives from

42:09

the inside out . S secure , e

42:12

examine , e expose

42:14

. D decide Very

42:16

30,000-level , 30,000-foot

42:19

level explanation , but

42:22

it is very powerful

42:24

because when we can get to the root level of

42:26

these toxic , destructive thoughts and

42:29

we uproot them and replace them with truth

42:31

, we're on the way to new

42:34

kingdom thinking which will

42:36

change our lives .

42:37

It absolutely will . I'm curious for the

42:40

people you've worked with this on and I'm

42:42

sure you've done it . Where's

42:44

the stumbling block ? Where do people have

42:47

the hardest time with this ? Is it the front

42:50

end or the back end ? I'm just curious what

42:52

you've seen .

42:55

What a great question . I would say it

42:57

is probably , and historically

42:59

, not spending enough time on exposing

43:02

a thought to truth

43:04

. So we

43:07

can examine a thought and we can

43:09

uproot it , but if we don't replace it

43:11

with truth , we're

43:13

opening ourselves for that thing to just

43:15

fester . We need to replace destructive

43:19

, toxic thoughts with truth , because

43:22

even if what we're thinking , feeling

43:24

, is a fact , this is

43:26

big . Truth is greater than fact

43:28

. Amen , truth

43:30

is greater than fact .

43:33

You even said the word abide and that abide

43:35

I was doing a study a while

43:37

back and that spoke about the intimacy

43:39

of Christ

43:41

and had an intimate relation . I

43:45

was leading a Bible study the other day and a

43:48

lady asked a question . My

43:50

instinct was to tell her what

43:52

I thought I

43:54

was like . You know what ? I'm going to answer

43:57

this with Scripture . I just went straight

43:59

to it . I went to like first Corinthians and then

44:01

it answered her question . I'm like here this

44:03

is what the truth says versus what Christ says , that

44:05

whole lot , really you listen to the truth versus me , because

44:08

I screw up yeah . That's

44:11

good stuff . That

44:14

is so good . I was thinking

44:16

that expose would be the area , but

44:18

the decide part . You mentioned deciding

44:20

. You write the some

44:23

scriptures down from time to time . What other

44:25

practical ways do you

44:27

see where God because I wrote the word act by

44:29

decide ?

44:30

Yeah , that's great . That's exactly right . It's an action

44:32

, yeah , you're right .

44:33

Okay , just didn't know if there was anything

44:36

that you see where people can really

44:38

put that in action that works well . I mean

44:40

obviously writing the scriptures down , you

44:43

know . Just didn't know if there was other tips or

44:45

things that you think that you've

44:47

seen . Guys do that bring value there .

44:49

Yeah , let's get really practical . I think one of the dumbest

44:51

things we do is pick up our phone first thing in the morning

44:53

before we fill our

44:55

minds with truth and

44:57

set our minds and keep them set , like

45:00

Colossians 3 says Right , we open

45:02

our phones and we scroll and we absorb

45:04

the traumas of this broken , fractured

45:06

world , and we absorb those before

45:09

having set our minds on truth . And so we

45:11

could add this to the D part of

45:13

saying I am decidedly

45:17

going to set my mind and keep it

45:19

set on truth for

45:21

the first hour of the morning , before I

45:23

even turn on my phone , so that

45:25

I can point the compass of my heart and

45:27

the affections of my heart to

45:30

the spirit of truth , the spirit of truth himself who

45:32

leads me and guides me into all truth

45:34

. So this is maybe

45:36

the practicality of prioritizing

45:39

what gets our attention Right

45:41

, especially first thing in the day . So yeah

45:44

, oh my gosh , yeah , you want to get practical . What

45:46

else can we do ? Stop picking

45:48

up your freaking phone first thing in the morning . Get

45:51

in the scriptures , get in the Psalms . I

45:55

sort of do that as a

45:57

liturgy with the Lord , just personally

46:00

, and

46:02

I will pray whole Psalms

46:04

. I'll pray the words like Psalm 16

46:06

. I have said the Lord continually

46:08

before me . Because he's at my right hand , I

46:11

shall not be moved . Therefore , my heart

46:13

is glad . In my glory , my inner self rejoices

46:15

. My body too shall rest and confidently

46:18

dwell in safety . In your presence is

46:20

fullness of joy , and at your right hand are pleasures

46:22

. Forever more I think about , like Psalm 27

46:24

. What would have become of me had

46:26

I not believed I would see the goodness of the Lord

46:29

in the land of the living ? Psalm 25

46:31

unto you , oh Lord

46:33

, do I bring my life

46:36

? Psalm 68 , 19

46:38

. Blessed be the Lord who bears

46:40

our burdens and carries us day

46:42

by day . That's what it means to set

46:44

your focus .

46:45

Wow , gracious and guys , what you just saw

46:47

was a was a firsthand

46:50

account of a body right there that

46:52

, if you couldn't feel the intimacy right there

46:54

that Christopher has with Christ and God's

46:56

word , that was . That was beautiful , that

46:58

was absolutely beautiful . Thank

47:00

you for sharing that . That was , that

47:03

was impactful , that was a really good moment . Really

47:05

good moment . Now

47:07

you mentioned to us where I know we're

47:09

getting towards the image you mentioned shame , take

47:11

as much time as you want .

47:12

Chris , You're great . You're great at what you do . I've

47:14

got all the time for you .

47:16

All right , brother . Well , you mentioned , shame yeah

47:18

. You mentioned grief .

47:19

And .

47:20

I worked with again a lot of guys that we

47:22

go through stuff and we wow , and guys

47:25

work through issues

47:27

differently than a lot of

47:29

people . Well , a lot of females

47:31

just process stuff differently than guys and when it comes

47:33

to shame and grief , a lot of guys they want to hide . They

47:35

won't do all they can to hide that and

47:38

yes , sir that holds back us , hold

47:41

us , that holds us back from healing .

47:42

So that's what would you ?

47:43

tell . What would you say to the guys that are listening right now

47:45

? They're trying to keep this

47:47

facade of and

47:50

it's really that shame and grief is just crippling

47:52

them .

47:56

The day that you decide that what Jesus did

47:58

for you is greater than what happened to you Is

48:02

the day that you will take your first step into

48:04

transformation and wholeness . The day

48:07

that you decide that the pain of regret

48:09

is greater than the pain of making

48:11

a change Is

48:14

the day that you'll take your first step into

48:16

saying yes to the process of transformation

48:18

. Let's connect shame and grief . Both

48:21

shame and ungrieved losses

48:23

render us feeling as though we are powerless

48:25

and alone in life , and that will

48:27

keep us stuck . Powerless and alone

48:29

is a false identity , and they are lies

48:32

Right when we frame any

48:34

circumstance up against what the scriptures

48:36

promise us as disciples of Jesus

48:39

. I talk about this in the book that shame

48:41

specifically hooks itself

48:43

to our identity , not our performance

48:45

. It tells us we

48:47

have to self promote and self protect

48:50

and put on the mask and wear

48:52

the costume just to stay alive

48:54

, because the world is inherently

48:56

a scary , unstable

48:59

, unsafe place . But , chris

49:01

, that motivation , my friend , is based

49:04

in fear .

49:05

Yes .

49:06

Love is perfect . Love casts

49:08

out fear , for fear has with the torment . So

49:11

we live timidly under this influence

49:13

of fear and shame . Okay , kind

49:16

of , take it a level deeper 100%

49:19

. Let's

49:22

go . Whatever has our identity Again

49:25

, we talked about shame hooking itself to our identity

49:28

Whatever has our identity has our beliefs

49:30

. Whatever has our beliefs has

49:32

our thoughts . Whatever has our thoughts

49:34

has the affections of our hearts . Whatever

49:36

has our affections has our focus

49:38

and thus the motivation and

49:41

direction for our lives . Here it is , Chris , Because

49:43

whatever has the most influence over

49:45

us has us . We

49:48

are held captive by it

49:50

. So , as your question relates to

49:53

grief , this is related

49:55

in a way . If we do not

49:57

grieve and go through the necessary

50:00

process of grieving our

50:02

losses , we eventually

50:04

normalize life with

50:06

intensified stored pain and

50:09

that stored pain complicated

50:11

grief , prolonged grief as it's called

50:13

clinically affects our spirits

50:16

, souls and body . So

50:18

until we grieve , until , until

50:21

, until we

50:23

grieve . Much

50:25

of this emotional and physical energy is

50:28

attached to the past , where

50:31

shame has influence and

50:33

shame writes a new narrative and we

50:35

remain stuck and then traumatized

50:37

in the pain , so grieving our losses

50:39

, which involves vulnerability

50:42

. Honesty is so

50:44

vital for healing .

50:48

You said the word until three times . So

50:51

, does that mean that this

50:53

is a point in time ? So there's not . There's not

50:55

a window . There's not a window

50:57

that you have to do . If you have some grief , you need to deal with

50:59

this from 20 years ago . You can still make that

51:02

decision today . You have to deal with that grief

51:04

, right ?

51:04

You have to because it

51:07

and this is science . I

51:09

talked about this in , oh

51:12

goodness , I think , both chapter two and

51:14

chapter 10 of the book . But check this out , chris . It's crazy

51:16

. We have what's called cellular

51:18

memories , and traumatic

51:21

memories sit on our , on our cells

51:23

, all throughout the body , like photographs

51:25

, okay , and we can deal

51:27

with those . And until

51:29

we deal with those , it creates

51:32

a lens through which we live and look . It

51:34

is a big deal . If we've got 20

51:37

year old grief , let's

51:40

go .

51:40

Let's go .

51:41

Get it , get seeing a professional

51:43

counselor and let's deal with this Right

51:46

right , can't ?

51:47

you can't just keep burying this stuff , guys . If you

51:49

want this transformation , it has

51:52

to be , it has to be dealt with . When

51:54

we bury our grief , it doesn't make

51:57

it go away , it makes it worse

51:59

, right which

52:02

leads us to if

52:05

we do deal with it and

52:07

we get it out , we get that transformation . Everything

52:09

that you're working towards what

52:12

I've written in your book and what I've just read in scripture is

52:14

working towards peace , the peace

52:16

that passes all understanding . And we're

52:19

never gonna have that until we can deal

52:22

with that grief , that shame , whatever it is , head

52:24

on .

52:26

Can I do something real fast ? Amen , you

52:29

can edit this out if you don't want to .

52:30

No , let's go .

52:31

I just feel . I feel led by the Holy Spirit . There's a 52 year

52:33

old man listening to this podcast right now

52:35

and I sense in my spirit that this 52

52:37

year old man listening to this show right

52:40

now has lived under the

52:42

lie from childhood , where

52:45

you experienced rejection at a core

52:48

level because of a lack of performance and

52:50

you saw the look of disdain and disapproval

52:52

in your father's eyes and he

52:54

was projecting upon you his

52:57

own issues . But you received it as

52:59

an identity message and now , as a 52

53:01

year old man , you are working uphill

53:04

and upstream , as a father

53:06

, as an employee , as a leader , and

53:08

today the Lord says I called you out

53:10

by invitation and by name to

53:12

say I'm calling you into myself . Please

53:15

give me , give me that false

53:17

identity , says the Lord . Give

53:19

me your heart . Give me your heart

53:21

, says the Lord , because when it is

53:23

revealed , you will

53:25

be healed .

53:28

Amen , reveal

53:31

it . Reveal it , guys .

53:32

There's no shame there's no shame , and

53:34

the enemy of our soul says

53:36

if you reveal it , you're gonna be worse

53:39

off . And that's a lie , right

53:41

? Imagine what would have happened

53:43

if , when the Lord comes to

53:45

Adam in Genesis , chapter three , verse eight , and

53:48

said Adam , where are you ? Instead of Adam

53:50

saying we hid because we were afraid

53:52

, he would have said oh my gosh , father

53:55

, I've been looking for you . Here's what happened . Please

53:57

help us , please forgive us , clothe us

53:59

with robes of righteousness . We don't

54:01

want to be rendered

54:04

stuck and fending for

54:06

ourselves . Imagine what the narrative would have looked

54:08

like .

54:09

Amen , and

54:12

for that 52 year old guy you just

54:14

mentioned we've lost . So many times

54:16

we feel these thoughts of condemnation

54:19

and we're being condemned and we have to remember there

54:22

is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus . That condemning

54:24

is unfit for use . I

54:26

mean , you're not a building that's unfit for use . No

54:29

, no , no , no , that is Christopher

54:31

has debunked all that stuff right here . Guys

54:33

, I mean that piece is there , it's available , but

54:35

you have to take action .

54:37

Come on , my friend . That's a good word , Chris

54:39

, yeah .

54:41

What's the ? It's the word . I hear so much , man , and I've

54:43

thought about this one my own life , you know where . I just

54:45

I can't , I can't do this . I

54:47

mean , look at me . Why would anybody

54:49

listen to me ? Why would anybody want me . I

54:51

mean , I've been through a divorce , I've lost a child , I've

54:53

got all the things right that you know , the insecurities

54:56

and stuff like that . So why ? Why , listen to

54:58

me ? Well , you know you shouldn't , but I'm following

55:00

Christ and Christ is guiding me

55:02

and I've just turned it over to him every day , because you talked

55:04

about that idea of this is a daily

55:07

transformation happens daily . It was all going to

55:09

soda sanctification and that means we

55:11

have to get up and chase him with all we

55:13

have each and every day .

55:15

There's a scripture in the book of Joel

55:17

I think it's Joel . Chapter two in the prophets

55:19

is this . He says speaking

55:21

on the Lord's behalf , of course I will replace

55:24

the years that the locust

55:26

has eaten away , and I believe there are people

55:28

joined with us today , chris , that are saying I'm

55:31

so scared to bring out this trauma

55:33

. I'm so scared to bring out this vulnerability

55:35

. I'm so scared to bring out this fear , this broken

55:37

place , because I've already experienced

55:39

so much wounding . And the

55:41

Lord says I

55:44

will restore and

55:46

replace that which the locust

55:48

has eaten away . It's

55:50

not about just refurbishing

55:52

our years , he says . I replaced

55:55

them for the glory and the honor of

55:57

my great name , says the Lord .

56:01

Yeah , that's a powerful verse . I just

56:03

I think about my daughter . We lost and

56:05

then we . It's

56:07

one of those things where you know you lose them

56:10

. But also I

56:12

literally this morning was holding my other daughter and

56:15

she was in my lap and the sun was just beaming

56:17

on me .

56:18

And .

56:18

I just had this moment of just . It was just goodness

56:20

, and you never

56:22

go . There's no pain like kid pain , but man , it

56:24

was something else to just holding

56:26

her . Thank

56:29

you for that verse , for that reminder . I mean , that's a verse

56:31

I use a lot , but that's right in this moment

56:33

. That's the verse I needed . Hopefully

56:35

there was a listener out there that needed

56:37

that as well .

56:38

Come on .

56:40

Good stuff , man . Last

56:42

question on the book , then we'll get into . You're great , yeah , you're

56:44

great To the lighting round my

56:47

buddy Deloni man . So

56:50

your buddies with him , your good friends with him he wrote

56:52

the four words it's my brother , yeah . Man

56:55

. Just speak about your relationship there because he's

56:57

awesome . He's been on the show .

56:59

Oh gosh .

57:00

I loved his four that he wrote for you .

57:01

Thank you . I met Deloni

57:03

in the fall of 2019

57:05

, before he had joined the Ramsey crew

57:08

. Right , he was the Dean of Students at

57:10

a university in Nashville and

57:12

, interestingly so , we were at this really small invitation

57:15

only event with Dave and his team and

57:17

we just got paired up and

57:20

got to know each other really well , and that's

57:22

cool man . Deloni's been a

57:24

rock in my life . I

57:28

mean , not only do I trust him as

57:31

a brother , but

57:33

he has met me in some of my hardest

57:36

seasons in the last couple of years . He

57:38

called me on a Monday night about

57:42

a year and a half ago and just

57:44

dropped a bomb of truth and I needed

57:46

to hear it . Last October . So

57:48

at the time of recording here , we are in early

57:51

March 2024 . Well , last October

57:53

his latest book came out and

57:56

I texted him just to say , bro , I'm so

57:58

proud of you for your new book release , et cetera . Well

58:00

, we ended up hopping on the phone , I think , later

58:03

that week . The love and the

58:10

freedom , the validation

58:12

, the challenge , the encouragement that he

58:14

brought to me continues to inspire

58:16

me . So , yeah , I am very

58:19

thankful to

58:21

have a friend like him and then

58:23

someone like him

58:25

to so kindly

58:27

write the forward to the book .

58:28

So , yeah , I was honored by it . Yeah , that's good

58:31

stuff man . The one thing he told me

58:33

was a practice and I use

58:35

this is when you have those negative thoughts

58:37

, you talk about secure those thoughts

58:39

. I got this practice from John

58:41

where he said when you have that thought

58:44

, come in , that you're no good , that you're

58:46

not fit , that you're , whatever the negative

58:48

is , he actually says the word

58:50

nope out loud . Nope , not

58:52

today . That's exactly right , and it's just like this

58:55

retrain your brain , rewire

58:57

your brain rather to stop that train

58:59

.

58:59

That's right , Chris .

59:00

And then start . Then you can start examining , exploring

59:02

, deciding it , but just to stop

59:04

it .

59:04

So yeah , you've got to interrupt the stream

59:07

of consciousness , right , that's

59:09

it .

59:09

That's good , love it , love it . Well , before

59:11

we go , chris , I'd love to do a quick lightning round with you

59:13

. We always kind of wrap up this way so

59:15

maybe you can start off with something easy what's

59:18

a hobby Outside of music ? I'm going

59:20

to take music off the plate . What's a

59:22

hobby that you had that you enjoy doing for fun ?

59:24

I'm a pretty serious home cook , like for real

59:26

serious . I sharpen knives and , yeah

59:31

, I love to grill . Actually , it's really funny

59:33

you asked that , chris , because in the summer

59:35

one of my favorite ways to decompress

59:37

is

59:39

to grill . There's just something about being

59:41

on the deck and grilling

59:44

a nice piece of grass-fed red

59:46

meat , because the Bible says a rise

59:48

, kill and eat . So I'm like let's go , that's

59:51

right . Someone said to me Chris

59:55

, do you love animals ? I'm like yep , right

59:57

next to the vegetables on the plate .

59:58

That's right .

1:00:00

Sorry folks , if you hate me now , don't

1:00:04

hate me .

1:00:04

But it's true , I love to grill .

1:00:07

Chris , I love to cook , I love to grill . I'm

1:00:09

Italian and it's

1:00:13

been in my life since I was little , so using my

1:00:16

hands , to prepare food

1:00:18

for people I love is a great joy , yeah .

1:00:20

Favorite meal ? Man , what's your favorite meal ? What should

1:00:22

you go to ?

1:00:23

That's like asking if water is wet . Yeah

1:00:26

, I don't know . So it changes

1:00:29

, chris , because here we are . I

1:00:31

don't know where you're located , but I'm up here in Metro

1:00:33

Detroit and the weather's slowly

1:00:35

getting warmer , right . So , getting

1:00:37

into grill season , like , my favorite thing

1:00:39

is to grill a great New

1:00:41

York strip . It's my favorite cut

1:00:43

of steak , grilled veg , that

1:00:47

kind of thing . But , like

1:00:49

in the winter , I love to do carnitas

1:00:52

. Ok , you

1:00:54

know , because I'm Italian , I go right

1:00:56

there as well , so I can throw down that

1:00:58

way . But man , I'm pretty simple . I love

1:01:01

a good piece of red meat , like .

1:01:02

I'm for real . Yeah , there you

1:01:04

go . Love it , love it , absolutely love

1:01:06

it . So any sports teams who

1:01:09

you follow , my Detroit

1:01:11

Lions .

1:01:13

Let's freaking go . I

1:01:15

hear you . I don't really

1:01:17

want to talk about the NFC championship game .

1:01:19

Yeah , obviously , let's

1:01:22

go there .

1:01:22

All it cost us was the Detroit Pistons win

1:01:24

. Now listen to Pistons I you know

1:01:26

, 20 years ago the Pistons were like in a hot

1:01:29

streak . And I love NBA

1:01:31

basketball and I've been a Golden State

1:01:33

Warriors fan . I'm not a Golden State Warriors

1:01:35

bandwagon fan , so y'all chill . I

1:01:37

was a Warriors fan before the 2015

1:01:40

championship , so step

1:01:42

off , give me some space

1:01:44

. But I love the Warriors , I love staff

1:01:46

. Nba basketball

1:01:48

is just a lot of fun . You know , here we are in March . I think

1:01:50

you said this is going to air in April

1:01:52

, so we're going to be in the playoffs at that point . I

1:01:54

love the NBA playoffs . I love college football . Like

1:01:56

I grew up , my grandpa went

1:01:58

to Notre Dame , my aunt went to Notre

1:02:01

Dame . So , like Notre Dame , football has been a staple

1:02:03

in my life since I was a little boy . College

1:02:05

football is great .

1:02:06

Michigan Wolverines Just

1:02:08

won a national championship . Let's go .

1:02:11

Yep , yeah

1:02:14

, I really enjoy sports . I played soccer

1:02:16

growing up , but

1:02:19

these days I really

1:02:21

enjoy the NBA . I really

1:02:23

enjoy college football and then , of course , forward

1:02:27

down the field , honolulu

1:02:29

Blue is back . Detroit Lions 2024,

1:02:32

. Restore the Roar .

1:02:33

Let's go , all right , he's calling

1:02:35

it , he's calling it .

1:02:36

I don't know , we'll see . I

1:02:39

love our coach .

1:02:41

There you go , he is intense .

1:02:43

Sorry about your Carolina Panthers dude

1:02:45

.

1:02:45

Oh , bro , we don't have a team . Yeah , but yeah .

1:02:49

I can say that because the Lions went 0-16

1:02:51

in , I think , 2008 . And

1:02:54

what's interesting is our head coach , dan Campbell

1:02:56

, played on that 0-16 team , so

1:02:59

he's got a chip on his shoulder in good way

1:03:01

and I'm pumped . I

1:03:03

think the Lions are set up

1:03:05

for success . I think they've got a

1:03:08

great wide receiver core . I think they need

1:03:10

some help with their secondary . I think the

1:03:12

defensive backs need a little help , but we're getting there

1:03:14

. We're getting there . I think our OC

1:03:17

and our DC are two of the best coordinators

1:03:19

in the NFL , so let's go Right

1:03:21

, and you just got to get one of your players dating

1:03:24

.

1:03:24

The next Taylor Swift , though , and then you'll be good to go .

1:03:26

Man , we got Eminem here in Detroit

1:03:28

. In fact we joked about that

1:03:30

up here . It was all in the news , Like if the Lions

1:03:32

would have beat the 49ers in the NFC championship

1:03:35

, it would have been Eminem versus Taylor

1:03:37

Swift in the Super Bowl . So

1:03:40

whatever .

1:03:41

That would have been a showdown for George .

1:03:42

Yeah , all the Swifties yeah .

1:03:45

Love it , love it . Well , a little more serious

1:03:47

question on the lightning round Cool . When

1:03:50

you think about God . What's your favorite

1:03:52

thing ? And me could be something simple

1:03:54

, or you can go as deep as you want . What's your favorite thing about

1:03:56

him ?

1:04:00

I think the most amazing thing about the Lord is

1:04:02

that , as big as he

1:04:04

is , he found it

1:04:06

fit to become so small to fit

1:04:08

into my little world . Immanuel

1:04:11

God with us . That is amazing

1:04:13

to me and it crazy bro .

1:04:15

It's so crazy . What a blessing . Yeah , let's

1:04:18

flip it 180 . Least favorite thing about the

1:04:20

evil one .

1:04:24

John 844, . Jesus says

1:04:27

when

1:04:29

the enemy lies , he's speaking

1:04:31

his native language .

1:04:33

The liar .

1:04:34

I think the greatest tactic the

1:04:36

enemy has against us because he is already

1:04:38

defeated is deception

1:04:40

, and when we believe a lie , we empower the

1:04:42

lie . More specifically , we empower the

1:04:44

liar himself . It's

1:04:47

deception .

1:04:51

Amen , just a couple more . What's

1:04:53

something that you're currently struggling with ? Anything

1:04:55

that's on your plate right now that you're thinking of . I

1:04:58

need to tighten that up .

1:05:00

Hmm , because

1:05:04

I'm a type A , very

1:05:06

driven person , overextended

1:05:09

and under stress . My

1:05:12

good performance , or lack

1:05:14

thereof , defines my identity and worth

1:05:17

and value . And so

1:05:19

, if I'm real honest , I don't mind being

1:05:21

candid like this book launch and

1:05:23

my book coming out in the world I think

1:05:25

at the time of this airing it's probably already out

1:05:27

. I want it to

1:05:29

help a lot of people , but

1:05:33

under stress I'm going oh , what if

1:05:35

people don't read or write , or what if people don't like

1:05:37

it , or ? And then I'm going what does it

1:05:39

have to do with my worth and value ? So , to answer your

1:05:41

question , it's . It , honestly , is

1:05:43

just an insecurity about the

1:05:46

fact that if I don't perform well , I am

1:05:48

not loved . That's a huge , that's a huge

1:05:50

struggle for me if I'm being honest yeah . I

1:05:53

don't mind being candid with that either .

1:05:56

I appreciate you being honest

1:05:58

there for sure .

1:05:59

Sure .

1:06:00

I think it's about a habit , any habits

1:06:02

that you've started maybe within the last

1:06:04

12 months or six months , or something that you

1:06:06

want to start moving . We're always trying to give our guys

1:06:09

tips and ideas on ways

1:06:11

to improve your life . This could be a health habit or something's

1:06:14

very small , just curious , if anything comes to mind

1:06:16

that you know what there's value here .

1:06:19

Yeah , so two years ago I started this

1:06:21

thing . I just didn't know what called the daily

1:06:23

win , and

1:06:25

it's based upon sort of the premise of

1:06:28

have you read Atomic Habits by James Clear .

1:06:30

Oh yeah .

1:06:30

Yeah . So James says in

1:06:33

it that the goal is to get 1% better every

1:06:35

day . Now , folks , you've heard an hour

1:06:37

of Chris's and my conversation

1:06:39

all about transformation . I don't want you to conflate

1:06:42

what I'm about to say with the process of transformation

1:06:44

, because transformation is not a life hack , it's

1:06:47

a commitment , right ? But regarding

1:06:49

your question , what I did is

1:06:51

, chris , instead of saying , oh , five year plan

1:06:53

, year plan , what I'm going to do is I'm

1:06:55

going to seek to get 1% better every day . So

1:06:57

I had a list of like 10 , 15

1:07:00

things that I wanted to do every day and

1:07:03

I created this little grid in

1:07:05

my notebook , and inspiration for this

1:07:07

came from John A Cuff , the author , so

1:07:09

I want to give him credit where credit is due . But

1:07:12

basically I would map out 31 days or

1:07:14

30 days on the calendar , however many there were

1:07:16

in that month , and then I had my 10 things that

1:07:18

I did and it would be

1:07:20

as simple as you know walking

1:07:23

a couple of miles , starting

1:07:26

the day without my phone , making

1:07:29

sure I exercise , reading

1:07:31

for 30 to 45 minutes a day , like

1:07:34

those type of things , right . And

1:07:38

in doing so , what I did is I was getting

1:07:40

1% better in those core areas

1:07:42

. So for me it's like that's how habits

1:07:45

develop , that's

1:07:47

how habits stack , it's what

1:07:49

I do daily , not

1:07:51

what I decide to do today and say I've got

1:07:54

to have this big , audacious goal and

1:07:56

if I don't hit it tomorrow then I'm a failure

1:07:58

. That's why the gym memberships go

1:08:00

unused , oh yeah , you know , at the beginning

1:08:02

of the year , because people are like , oh my gosh , I'm going to lose all this weight

1:08:04

, I'm going to get in shape . And , like James

1:08:07

Clear even says , like what if we actually just

1:08:09

become the person who gets ready , gets in

1:08:11

the car and goes to the gym and we seek to get

1:08:13

1% better every day ? Like we're not going

1:08:15

to add 20 pounds of muscle

1:08:18

overnight , right

1:08:20

? So that daily win

1:08:22

has been huge for me , that's

1:08:24

awesome . Lately , though

1:08:27

, I've

1:08:29

really sought to slow

1:08:32

down my inner pace .

1:08:35

Okay .

1:08:36

What I mean by that is I want to

1:08:38

be very intentional about how I

1:08:40

go to bed at night and how I start the day

1:08:42

. So for me this is like not picking

1:08:44

up the phone . This is starting the

1:08:46

day in the Psalms , pointing the affections

1:08:49

of my heart to the Lord . Because

1:08:53

this is the process of formation . I want to be formed

1:08:56

into a person of love . I want to

1:08:58

be formed into a person of character

1:09:01

before the Lord and integrity , and

1:09:03

it's a really big deal to me .

1:09:05

Amen , yeah Well

1:09:07

, the last question for aligning around .

1:09:09

Christopher is great .

1:09:11

What do you hope the listener is out there Remember

1:09:14

the most from our conversation we had today .

1:09:18

That transformation doesn't happen in one day

1:09:20

, it happens daily , and

1:09:23

my book is

1:09:26

an attempt at training people

1:09:28

for transformation . Self-help

1:09:30

says try harder . Try

1:09:32

harder in your own strength , by

1:09:34

willpower , by your intention . Transformation

1:09:39

says train for transformation . Show

1:09:41

up today , when tomorrow

1:09:44

becomes today . Show up when the day after

1:09:46

becomes today . Show up . Call

1:09:48

90 , says may the Lord , god of Jacob

1:09:50

, answer you in the day

1:09:52

of trouble . Transformation

1:09:54

doesn't happen in one day , transformation

1:09:57

happens daily . Take that and run

1:09:59

.

1:10:00

Amen . Well , christopher , where do you want

1:10:02

the guys to go to connect with you , to get to copy

1:10:04

1:11:15

wonderful day you too , my friend . Are

1:11:20

1:11:29

and or professionally ? Get

1:11:43

there is no vision , the people perish . That's

1:11:46

1:12:21

. Don't miss this opportunity

1:12:24

to become a strong leader in a weak

1:12:26

world . Secure your spot today

1:12:28

at the lion within that us

1:12:30

slash leadership . That's

1:12:32

the lion within that us slash

1:12:35

leadership . All

1:12:39

right , fellas , I told you it was a deep one . I told you

1:12:41

it was gonna be tough and it was Solid

1:12:44

. What a phenomenal guy

1:12:46

. Just a blessing to be

1:12:48

able to meet him . And I want you to think

1:12:50

about this how are you Over

1:12:52

, gonna overcome that crushed spirit ? And

1:12:55

here's a hint you're not gonna do it by yourself . You

1:12:58

just not . We're not designed to do

1:13:00

this stuff by ourself . Life is hard

1:13:02

. Life is hard so why

1:13:04

try to go out about it alone . So

1:13:07

I'm telling you , if you need help , if you need support , if you

1:13:09

need encouragement , reach out . Even

1:13:11

if you don't reach out to the lion , reach out to

1:13:13

someone . But this is why

1:13:15

we built the community at the lion for guys

1:13:17

who are dealing with hurt and you

1:13:19

can't erase that and you're feeling isolated

1:13:22

, you feeling alone , you feeling defeated and

1:13:24

you need to turn somewhere . You need somebody's gonna

1:13:26

listen to you and you can't bring this up a church because

1:13:28

I bring us up a church Now . You know this guy's gonna know

1:13:31

all my business . If you feel that way , you

1:13:33

need to reach out to us . This

1:13:35

is why we built this authentic

1:13:38

, transparent , compassionate

1:13:40

, all the , all

1:13:42

the things right . But

1:13:45

it starts when you take action . So

1:13:47

I'm just blessed for Christopher for sharing what he

1:13:49

shared . I Think it's a

1:13:51

conversation that's worth having . We

1:13:53

need conversations like this and

1:13:56

I pray that you guys don't just turn from it . So

1:13:59

if this helped you , my one asks

1:14:01

only have one share

1:14:04

with somebody . You never know

1:14:06

what your brothers and Christ are going out , going going

1:14:08

through right now , because they can come

1:14:10

off as blessed and highly favored the inside . They could

1:14:12

be a dumpster fire , they

1:14:14

could be completely crushed . Just

1:14:17

hey , man , I heard this powerful story

1:14:19

with these two , these two Chris's , and

1:14:21

I thought I want to share it with you . Just a simple text

1:14:24

message . You never know , and

1:14:27

if you are the guy that Christopher called

1:14:29

out , I Want

1:14:31

to invite you to send us an email . Send

1:14:33

me a note , chris , at the lionthand . I

1:14:35

us send me a note Because

1:14:38

I want to connect with you , I want to speak some

1:14:40

truth into your life , I want to give you some

1:14:42

encouragement . Heck , I want to buy you a copy of Chris's

1:14:44

book and just send it to you . So

1:14:46

send me a note . I'm highly

1:14:48

Just be more , be super

1:14:51

intentional here about serving

1:14:53

you , the listeners . So

1:14:56

thank you so much . Thank you for so much for listening

1:14:58

. If you can give a rating , a review

1:15:00

, that would . That would be huge . And then head

1:15:02

over to the lion with nus . We changed

1:15:04

the website and it's been updated

1:15:06

. We put a lot of effort into this . So

1:15:09

maybe you have questions about the heck . Is

1:15:11

this community stuff that he's talking about ? Go

1:15:13

to the website , check it out . We put

1:15:15

a lot of information there to help you understand

1:15:18

how we're , how we're serving others

1:15:20

, that types of ways within our community

1:15:22

, with their mastermind , with our daily spiritual

1:15:24

kick-offs , with our cohorts , with our groups , with our training

1:15:27

, all the stuff . They're live

1:15:29

events . It's all on

1:15:31

the website . So that's the lion

1:15:33

with nus . Okay , so get

1:15:35

after and have a great day . Thank you so much

1:15:38

for listening . Come back on Friday . We'll have

1:15:40

some great tips for you on Friday

1:15:42

. You know what's coming . Keep

1:15:44

unleashing the line with

1:15:48

them . Oh ,
