In this episode Angela talks about the ways in which we can support our children when they have done something hurtful to other kids. We are talking about how we can maintain a sense of belonging for our kids while at the same time addressing that they hurt someone. It starts at a young age, and this story is probably familiar to most parents. Who, as a child, hasn't hit or bitten another child?

The main concern is how, as parents, we support ourselves and deal with our own emotions. We are impacted, have fears and concerns and these are valid. Angela talks about the ways in which she sought support from another parent. Then she was able to fully connect with her child and let her process the experience of having hurt another child.

Children feel terrible when they hurt other children (or grown-ups). That is the basic understanding we need to remember. We can support our children in these times, and reduce the likelihood of them ever doing it again.

And don't be fooled when your child has a blank expression on their face when they hurt another child. This simply means that their system cannot process the event and they need time to integrate what they did. Once they feel that they are safe with you, they can cry and this helps them.

The two books we mention in this episode are:
