In this episode, Gene & Matt talk about feelings: emotions, sensations, and urges. What are feelings and why do we have them? How do they influence our thoughts and behaviors? How can we be aware of them in order to not let them cause negative impacts in our lives? And what lessons can we learn from them? Gene & Matt each share a little bit of their personal perspective on feelings and the role feelings play in their lives. Matt identifies as more of a “feeler” and talks about how he finds his balance between reason and emotion, while Gene talks about the “thinker” mindset, where he thinks he got it from, and how it has influenced his life. We discuss how the structure of our society can influence our feelings as well, and create chronic stress responses that can have long-term negative health consequences, and that people in marginalized communities experience shorter average life spans as a result of this. We emphasize the integral role that feelings play in our identities, and ponder the notion that we are “feeling beings who think, and not thinking beings who feel.”Some resources for topics we referenced in the episode:Brené Brown and Atlas of the Heart - Book and Limited series show on HBO (Gene was referring to the tv show in the episode):
