Mark Jean served as the VP of Creative Licensing for TV and Film at the Mobius Music Group, where his duties include expanding and organizing the music library for placement in TV, Film, Advertising, Video Games, and all other media, as well as business Development by expanding relationships with music supervisors, music editors, productions companies, video game companies, advertising agencies, web content, and sport networks. He currently owns and runs Runway Sound Studio in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Key Take Aways:
  • Single-song agreements, often non-exclusive, have become much more common these days. This allows the artist great flexibility to have a publishing company help pitch your work, while you continue to pitch your music to other people
  • While there are advantages to have an exclusive agreement with the right publishing company who is super excited about your work, be extremely careful before signing one of these, because it also closes you off to a lot of other possibilities
  • Your songs have to be broadcast quality before you pitch them. Anyone who makes decisions these days almost never will consider a demo-quality song
  • Research independent publishing companies, if you want to go that route
  • If you want to do everything on you own, get very good at networking - get to know music supervisors - and pitch like crazy! It's a lot of work
  • Build relationships with music supervisors whenever you can
  • Music supervisors are usually really busy, so keep introduction emails very short
  • Find out organizations that put on events for songwriter, and go to them!
  • Referrals are always the best way to have first contact with people, so always explore this option first, checking all of your social media channels for connections, etc
  • Don't burn any bridges, even if your feelings are hurt. The music industry is a small community, and you don't need to risk being closed off to certain relationships with people because you left someone on bad terms
  • Build your network for real relationships. This is your most valuable asset
