Today is Wednesday, March 27th. We'll
0:02
update you on the major bridge collapse in Baltimore,
0:04
what we know about the ship that crashed into
0:06
it, and how the crew likely saved lives. Also
0:09
a new name in the 2024 presidential race, and
0:12
former President Trump rolls out his newest venture,
0:15
plus a radical rule change coming to the
0:17
NFL. The perks of Robin Hood's
0:20
first credit card, and more college
0:22
grads are getting jobs that do not use
0:24
their degrees, but is higher education still worth
0:26
it? Those stories and even more
0:28
news to know in today's episode. Welcome,
0:32
welcome to The Newsworthy, all the day's
0:35
news in around 10 minutes. Fast, fair,
0:37
fun, and on the go. I'm Air
0:39
Commande, thanks so much for being here.
0:41
You ready? Let's do this. It
0:47
is set to be another busy, challenging day
0:49
in Baltimore, in the aftermath of that major
0:52
bridge collapse. You'll remember from the
0:54
breaking news yesterday morning, a cargo ship lost
0:56
power and rammed into the pillar of the
0:58
Francis Scott Key Bridge. In a
1:00
matter of seconds, the bridge plunged into the
1:02
river and was destroyed. We now
1:04
know eight construction workers were on the bridge,
1:07
filling potholes at the time. At
1:09
least two of them were rescued, but sadly
1:11
the other six are now presumed dead. That
1:13
said, it apparently could have been much worse.
1:16
An emergency call was made from the container
1:18
ship just moments before the crash. It
1:20
gave officers enough time to stop cars from
1:22
coming over the bridge before the ship slammed
1:24
into it, a move that most
1:27
likely saved lives. The ship's crew members
1:29
have all been accounted for, and there were no reports
1:31
of any of them getting hurt. Some
1:33
of the containers that were aboard the ship
1:35
contained potentially dangerous chemicals, though. So the U.S.
1:37
Coast Guard is looking at the damaged containers
1:39
now to make sure there are not any
1:41
health risks. Authorities are also
1:43
still looking into exactly how this crash
1:45
happened, and the National Transportation Safety Board
1:48
will be investigating both the ship and
1:50
the bridge. For now, officials say it's
1:52
too soon to know exactly how long it's going
1:54
to take to rebuild, but President Biden says he
1:56
wants the federal government to bear the full cost
1:58
of the new bridge. More than 1,000 personnel
2:01
from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are
2:03
going to help with the engineering, construction, contracting,
2:05
and so on. To be
2:08
continued. The
2:11
bridge collapse could end up impacting the economy
2:13
far beyond Maryland. The Port of Baltimore is
2:15
one of the busiest in the U.S. In
2:18
fact, it's the top handler of imports and
2:20
exports of cars and light trucks in the
2:22
U.S. Things like coal, natural gas,
2:24
soybeans, and sugar also go in and out of
2:26
the port. Plus, retailers like Home
2:29
Depot, IKEA, and Amazon use it to
2:31
import their products. But it's
2:33
now closed indefinitely, meaning no ships are
2:35
going in or out. So
2:37
shippers have already warned customers to expect delays.
2:40
It's going to have an impact on ground shipments as well.
2:43
The bridge offered a key route that
2:45
linked Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New
2:47
York. So now, the logistics firm, Freidos,
2:49
says having to reroute cargo could push
2:52
up trucking and rail prices. For
2:54
now, though, analysts do not expect this to
2:56
have a huge impact on their overall supply
2:58
chain since companies should be able to divert
3:00
their shipments to other ports. It's
3:02
just likely to be a more costly and drawn-out process
3:04
for them. Our
3:08
former President Trump prepares for his first criminal
3:10
trial. A judge has put some new limits
3:12
on what Trump is allowed to say. This
3:15
is the case centered around hush money payments
3:17
made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. And
3:19
now, a judge says Trump is not
3:22
allowed to publicly comment about potential witnesses
3:24
like Daniels or his former lawyer, Michael
3:26
Cohen. He's also not allowed to
3:28
talk about prosecutors, potential jurors, or court
3:30
staff if it's believed his comments
3:32
could interfere with the case. Trump's team was
3:34
trying to fight this order, saying it goes against
3:36
his First Amendment rights. But now
3:38
that it's in effect, he needs to either follow it or
3:40
rack up more court fines. The trial is
3:43
set to begin next month. And speaking
3:45
of former President Trump, he is now making
3:47
money in a pretty unconventional way. He's
3:49
decided to start selling Bibles. They
3:52
also include copies of various American documents
3:54
like the U.S. Constitution and a handwritten
3:56
chorus to God Bless the USA by
3:58
musician Lee Greenwood. Trump posted about
4:00
the Bibles on Truth Social, encouraging his supporters
4:03
to make the purchase. As he
4:05
put it, quote, religion and Christianity are the biggest
4:07
things missing from this country. So he
4:09
says he wants to make America pray again. They're
4:11
going for $60 apiece. The
4:14
website for the Bibles assures people no money
4:16
will go toward Trump's political campaign, that instead
4:18
Trump's name and likeness are used through a
4:21
paid license, which the Washington Post reports is
4:23
through a company connected to Trump. Trump
4:26
Biden responded, saying it's classic Donald Trump that
4:28
he's scamming people. Of course,
4:30
this is not Trump's first big sales venture this year.
4:33
This $400 high top sneakers sold out just
4:35
hours after they were launched last month. He's
4:38
also been selling bottles of perfume and cologne,
4:40
digital trading cards, T-shirts with his mugshot on
4:42
them and more. Robert
4:46
F. Kennedy Jr. has named a running
4:48
mate, hoping to bring more support to
4:50
his independent presidential bid. He picked a
4:53
38-year-old Silicon Valley lawyer, investor and political
4:55
unknown named Nicole Shanahan. Political
4:57
analysts say her youth and her wealth could
4:59
help 70-year-old Kennedy. Shanahan has already
5:01
contributed more than $4.5 million to his campaign. Kennedy's
5:05
presidential run is considered a long shot. In
5:08
fact, no third-party candidate has won the American
5:10
presidency in well over a century. But
5:12
his campaign could still end up having a big impact on
5:14
the race, since analysts believe it could
5:16
complicate the road to victory for either President
5:19
Biden or former President Trump. A
5:23
historic new monument and sculpture park is ready
5:25
to open in Montgomery, Alabama. It will be
5:27
the closest thing the U.S. has to a
5:29
national monument to the victims of slavery. And
5:32
it's been in the works for years now. It
5:34
features sculptures, historical artifacts, contemporary
5:36
art, original research and first-person
5:39
stories, all of which explore the
5:41
institution of slavery, the lives of enslaved
5:43
people and the legacy of slavery in
5:45
the U.S. The centerpiece of
5:47
it all is a 43-foot-tall monument that
5:49
lists names recorded in the 1870
5:52
census, which was the first time
5:54
formerly enslaved black people were allowed to formally
5:56
claim a name that would be recognized by
5:58
the government. sculpture
6:00
park and national monument to freedom opens
6:02
to the public today. New museums
6:04
dedicated to black history have also recently
6:07
opened in South Carolina and Washington DC.
6:11

6:13
first I want to take a moment to thank our
6:15
sponsor, Vessi. I know I feel
6:18
better overall when I get outside and I
6:20

6:50
adventuring out and about. They are so versatile
6:52
though I can wear them for everyday errands

7:25
Okay now back to the news. It's
7:28
being called one of the most significant
7:31
rule changes in NFL history. League owners
7:33
voted to fundamentally change the kickoff. It's
7:35
now going to be a low-impact kickoff
7:37
modeled after what's already been used in
7:40
the XFL. When it was introduced
7:42
in the XFL injuries went down and returns
7:44
went up so the NFL is hoping to
7:46
see the same thing. With the change special
7:48
teams players will line up five yards apart
7:50
from each other at the 40 and 35
7:52
yard lines and wait until a kick lands
7:54
or is touched by one of two returners.
7:57
If it's touched it's a live ball. Otherwise.
8:00
Events would start at the twenty our game. Fans.
8:02
Will notice a change is right away starting with the
8:04
first play of every game. For. Now it's
8:06
only a one year trial though, so it will need
8:08
to be real proved next year or else the Nfl
8:11
will go back to it's old. Kick Off rule. Visa
8:15
and Mastercard have reached a major
8:17
settlement with Merchants, potentially ending nearly
8:20
two decades of litigation. This.
8:22
Is all over the see that charged every time
8:24
a credit or debit card is used as. Store
8:26
or restaurant. Under the new deal,
8:28
Visa and Mastercard agreed to cut and
8:30
cap those processing fees. And with
8:32
that us is this is are expected to
8:34
save nearly thirty billion dollars over just five
8:37
years. Making. It one of the
8:39
largest anti trust settlements in American history.
8:41
But. Then the lowered these could return to
8:43
their current levels after those five years.
8:46
And. As you might imagine, retail industry groups don't
8:48
like that part. For. Now though, they're just
8:50
calling this a step in the right direction. These.
8:52
Days slides these of about one to three
8:55
percent or page credit card companies in exchange
8:57
for allowing the transactions. And. Merchants ultimately
8:59
passes these under. Customers. Now.
9:01
The seas will be a little lower and some savings are
9:04
expected to be passed on the customers as well. The
9:06
first the settlement nice be approved in
9:08
port and appeals are possible. Robin
9:12
Hood is becoming more than just a trading
9:14
up. This leads the company unveiled it's first
9:17
ever credit card and it sort of all
9:19
sorts of benefits. For. Starters, it offers
9:21
three percent pass back on all categories.
9:23
Robin Hood is also allowing users to
9:25
create and delete virtual cards for one
9:27
time purchases. And. A physical card will
9:29
be numberless so the gets lost or stolen. You
9:31
won't have to swap out all of your card
9:34
information. Plus. There's no foreign transaction fee
9:36
or annual fee for the card. That said,
9:38
he do have to have a Robin Hood
9:40
Gold membership which runs five dollars a month.
9:42
The. Company Ceo says he hopes this attractive
9:44
credit card or drawing people to use
9:47
all of Robin Hood services soon. Customers
9:49
can join a wait. Now is general availability
9:51
expected later this year. As
9:55
long as you're getting a Big Mac emails or
9:57
get a Krispy Kreme doughnuts rate. At least.
9:59
And. Mcdonalds seems to thank the fast
10:01
food chains as it plans to sell crispy
10:04
creams at all of it's locations soon. They're
10:06
already available in Kentucky and Indiana, and the
10:08
rollout will start elsewhere this year. Who
10:10
apparently take about two and a half years though
10:12
to change the menu nationwide. When. They
10:14
you become available Mcdonalds customers will be able
10:17
to order the Original Blaze Chocolate Ice, a
10:19
Sprinkles or the Chocolate ice cream. So donuts
10:21

10:24
be available all day. Says
10:27
it for the media's today's and I would sign
10:29
for Work Wednesday when we break down when interesting
10:31
career work related to story every Wednesday the first.
10:34
This episode is brought to you by one Skyn.
10:36

10:38
interesting to learn that Are Skyn it goes through
10:41
of a transition between seasons, not just on the
10:43
surface but at the cellular level. So. Yes,
10:45
protecting our skin against the sun's Uva
10:47
rays is important, but so is nurturing
10:49
or Skyn even beyond that One Skins
10:51
products actually work from the inside out
10:54
with their scientifically proven peptide called O
10:56
S One and I love it when
10:58
there's good data Tobacco product up. In
11:00
A third party twelve week clinical study
11:02
performed by third party research organization O
11:04
S One Face, which I use every
11:06
morning and night by the way, was
11:08
clinically proven to strengthen the skin barrier,
11:11
improve Skyn health markers, and diminish visible
11:13
signs of aging. Wrinkles were diminish. In
11:15
eighty seven percent of users. And I can
11:17

11:19

11:52
now back to work Wednesday. Or.
11:54
More than half of college graduates are
11:56
ending up in jobs where their degrees
11:58
really aren't needed. That's. He finding
12:00
of a new study tracking the career paths
12:02
of more than ten million people who entered
12:04
a job market over the past decade. The
12:07
study found that not only are graduates seeking jobs
12:09
that are low paying or out of line with
12:11
their interest. But. Once they do take a
12:13
first job like that, he tends to be hard to
12:15
escape. His other way for every one
12:17
know. another big take away from the study is
12:20
at the single greatest factor in a graduates employment
12:22
prospects is their choice of a major in fact
12:24
is even more important than which college they chose
12:26
to go to. It has people in
12:28
for rear oriented meters like nursing get
12:30
a much better shot at actually using
12:32
and getting compensated for the skills they've
12:34
learned as compared to majors like humanities
12:36
are liberal arts. Also, soon as
12:38
you get an internship as an undergraduate have
12:41
a fifty percent greater chance of actually getting
12:43
a job in are chosen field. And
12:45
overall data shows a college education can still
12:47
really pay off, even though the average cost
12:49
of a four year degree has risen to
12:52
six figures. And. Critics pointed things
12:54
like years of student loan debt. The.
12:56
Federal Reserve Bank of New York says the
12:58
overall wage gap between recent college and high
13:00
school that has been widening for decades and
13:03
grew even more last year. And. That
13:05
the value of a college education
13:07
growth of her workers like test.
13:10
So much for joining us today and for sharing
13:12
the So. If you find it valuable, it really
13:14
does help us out when you let others know
13:16
that you listen and you encourage them to give
13:18
it a try to thank you in advance for
13:20
all of your support, Look at you up on
13:22
money to know the morrow. Until then had ablation.
