Today is Monday, March 4th. We'll

0:02

tell you about the U.S. effort to

0:04

get humanitarian aid into Gaza and

0:06

Republican Nikki Haley's first win in the 2024 presidential

0:08

race. Also the

0:11

outcome of a rare criminal case that's

0:13

been called a game changer for first

0:15

responders. Plus a powerful storm that shut

0:17

down ski resorts and a major highway.

0:19

A new lawsuit that pits two of the world's

0:21

most prominent tech leaders against each other. And

0:24

how two basketball stars made history over

0:26

the weekend. Those stories and more news

0:28

to know next. Welcome,

0:32

welcome to the newsworthy. All the day's

0:34

news in around 10 minutes. Fast, fair,

0:36

fun and on the go. I'm Erica

0:39

Mandy. Thanks so much for being here.

0:41

You ready? Let's do this. For

0:47

the first time, the U.S. air dropped

0:49

humanitarian aid into Gaza. On Saturday, three

0:51

military planes dropped 66 bundles with

0:54

38,000 meals inside. Aid

0:57

organizations say the air drops still fall

0:59

far short of meeting the needs in

1:01

Gaza where people are facing starvation. But

1:03

American officials say there will be more delivery

1:05

missions to come. That there will be

1:07

a sustained campaign of air drops. And that

1:10

the U.S. is also looking into other ways

1:12

to deliver aid, perhaps by sea. President

1:14

Biden has already asked Israel to allow more aid

1:17

in as well. But the demand for

1:19

food, water and medicine is only getting more

1:21

dire. At this point, America's

1:23

top goal is to negotiate a pause

1:25

in fighting that could help a lot

1:27

more aid get in via trucks. Just

1:29

yesterday, Vice President Kamala Harris gave her

1:32

most direct statement to date, calling for

1:34

an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. She

1:36

was referring to a six-week pause in fighting

1:38

that's been proposed. It would allow for not

1:41

only more aid, but also the release of

1:43

Israeli hostages who have been held by Hamas

1:45

since October 7th. Last week,

1:47

President Biden said he was hopeful a deal

1:49

could come by this week. So

1:51

stay tuned. Republican

1:55

Nikki Haley won her first

1:57

presidential contest yesterday. She defeated...

2:00

former President Trump in the Washington DC

2:02

primary, and that made her the first

2:04

woman to win a GOP primary in

2:06

American history. Her campaign said it wasn't

2:08

surprising that Republicans closest to the Capitol

2:10

are rejecting what it called dysfunction from

2:12

the former president. But the Trump campaign

2:14

shrugged it off, saying the former South Carolina

2:17

governor was quote, just crowned queen of the

2:19

swamp by the lobbyists and DC insiders. To

2:21

be clear, this doesn't really affect the current

2:23

direction of the race, especially since Trump scored

2:26

two more wins over the weekend. On Saturday,

2:28

he won caucuses in Idaho and Missouri and

2:30

swept the delegate hall at a party convention

2:32

in Michigan. Plus, Trump had already

2:34

defeated Haley in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and

2:37

her home state of South Carolina. Next

2:39

up, Haley and Trump will go head-to-head

2:41

in more than a dozen primaries tomorrow

2:43

on Super Tuesday, the largest day of

2:45

voting outside of the November election. And

2:47

Trump is expected to lock up the

2:49

Republican nomination days later. The

2:53

U.S. Education Department is now investigating an

2:55

Oklahoma school district. It's specifically looking into

2:58

alleged discrimination and harassment at a public

3:00

high school where a 16 year old

3:02

non-binary student was beaten in a bathroom

3:04

last month, one day before they

3:06

died. The teen's grandmother says they had

3:09

been bullied for a while over their

3:11

gender identity, and she's criticized administrators for

3:13

not summoning police or an ambulance right

3:15

after the fight. The federal

3:17

investigation started after a complaint from the

3:20

human rights campaign that said the high

3:22

school never addressed bullying, violence, and harassment

3:24

that had all been well documented. The

3:27

Oklahoma school district says it's cooperating with

3:29

federal officials, and it says the HRC's

3:32

complaint is not supported by the facts.

3:34

There is also a criminal investigation

3:36

underway. The Tulsa County District Attorney

3:39

says he's just waiting for local investigators

3:41

findings before deciding whether to file charges

3:43

for the teen's death to be

3:45

continued. In a

3:49

controversial court decision, a Colorado paramedic

3:51

was sentenced to five years in

3:53

prison. The paramedic was convicted late

3:56

last year of criminally negligent homicide

3:58

and second-degree assault. for the

4:00

unlawful administration of drugs. This

4:02

case is a very rare example of

4:05

emergency medical personnel being prosecuted. It

4:07

had to do with his role in the death of Elijah McClain

4:09

back in 2019. Now

4:11

remember, McClain was returning home from a store

4:13

when police confronted him. They were responding to

4:15

a call about a suspicious person. Police

4:18

forcefully restrained McClain. Paramedics

4:20

then injected him with an overdose of

4:22

the powerful sedative ketamine, despite never speaking

4:24

to him or checking his vital signs.

4:27

McClain died in the hospital days later. The

4:29

paramedics lawyer argued he followed protocol and

4:32

should not have been held criminally responsible

4:34

for a split second decision based on

4:36

information he got from police. And

4:39

after the sentence was handed down, paramedics

4:41

and firefighters around the country expressed outrage,

4:43

saying they worry that urgent decisions they

4:45

make on the job can be criminalized.

4:48

In fact, the president of the largest firefighters

4:50

union in the country says some of its

4:52

members have opted to retire or surrender their

4:54

paramedic license because of the McClain case. Still,

4:57

some community activists say the sentence was

5:00

not strong enough. Another paramedic who worked alongside

5:02

him is said to be sentenced next month.

5:08

Even more snow is headed to Northern California

5:10

this week on the heels of an extreme

5:12

blizzard that pounded parts of the Golden State

5:14

and Mountain West over the weekend. It

5:16

impacted the Sierra Nevada mountains most of

5:18

all, but also expanded into other parts

5:20

of Northern California, Nevada, Utah, and Western

5:23

Colorado. More than 100 miles of

5:25

a major interstate between Reno and Sacramento had

5:27

to close along with several other roadways. Hundreds

5:30

of people were trapped inside their cars for

5:32

hours and many left their vehicles stranded. Thousands

5:35

of homes and businesses also lost power

5:37

and ski resorts were forced to shut

5:39

down because of extreme conditions. Accuweather

5:42

says the Palisades Tahoe Resort even saw wind

5:44

gusts reach 190 miles an hour. All

5:47

in all, up to 12 feet was expected

5:50

to fall over the weekend and another one

5:52

to two feet could fall in higher elevations

5:54

today and tomorrow. We have

5:56

much more news for you still ahead, but first I'm

5:58

so happy to see you again. happy

6:00

to be partnering with Lume. When other

6:02

deodorants just were not working for me anymore, I really

6:05

wasn't sure what to do. But now that

6:07

I've found Lume, I am using it every

6:09

day and I'm so happy I will be

6:11

buying more with my own money when I

6:13

run out. Because unlike certain

6:15

other deodorants, Lume is powered by mandelic

6:17

acid to deliver effective 72-hour odor control

6:19

everywhere from your pits to your feet.

6:21

It's paraben free, baking soda free, and

6:24

more. And I love that I can

6:26

choose from a variety of fresh, bright

6:28

scents like clean tangerine and cool cucumber.

6:30

Those are my favorites so far. Six

6:33

years after she created Lume, the doctor

6:35

behind this game-changing whole-body deodorant has now

6:37

earned over 300,000 five-star

6:39

reviews from people like me who love feeling

6:42

confident from head to toe. Plus, Lume

6:44

Starter Pack is perfect for new customers. It

6:46

comes with a solid stick deodorant, cream tube

6:48

deodorant, two free products of your choice like

6:50

mini body wash and deodorant wipes, and free

6:53

shipping. As a special offer for listeners,

6:55

new customers get $5 off a Lume

6:57

Starter Pack with code NEWTHRODY

7:00

at lumedeodorant.com. That equates to over

7:03

40% off your starter pack when you

7:05

visit lumedeodorant.com and use the code NEWTHRODY.

7:08

Now back to the news. As

7:11

expected, the CDC changed up its

7:14

strategy for controlling COVID-19. Until

7:16

now, people who tested positive for the virus were urged

7:18

to stay home for at least five days to lower

7:20

the chance of spreading it to others. Now

7:22

the CDC replaced that with general guidance

7:24

for anyone who is feverish, sneezing, and

7:26

coughing with a respiratory virus, saying

7:29

they can return to normal activities as long

7:31

as their symptoms are improving and they no

7:33

longer have a fever. In other

7:35

words, it's really just about symptoms now, not

7:37

test results. The CDC says it

7:39

made the change so recommendations are easier to

7:42

follow and more likely to actually be adopted.

7:44

Since surveys show people were not

7:46

following the previous isolation guidelines anymore

7:48

anyway. Still, some public health

7:50

experts are criticizing the CDC for this,

7:52

saying it's not taking the threat of

7:54

COVID-19 seriously enough. Remember just last week,

7:56

the CDC also recommended seniors receive a

7:59

spring booster shot. The

8:03

University of Florida is the latest major

8:05

school to fire anyone whose job focused

8:07

on diversity, equity and inclusion. It's in

8:09

response to new higher education reforms backed

8:11

by Governor Ron DeSantis in Florida and

8:13

other Republicans in the state. DeSantis

8:15

signed legislation that defunded DEI programs

8:17

at state public colleges and allowed

8:19

the state to remove them completely.

8:22

DeSantis applauded the University of Florida saying DEI

8:24

is toxic, that he's glad his state is

8:26

leading the way in this effort and he

8:28

hopes more states follow. On the

8:30

other side, the president of the United

8:33

Faculty of Florida Union says it's only

8:35

about silencing students and faculty calling the

8:37

action censorship and exclusion. Either

8:39

way, the $5 million that used to

8:41

go to DEI efforts at U.S. are

8:43

now being redirected into a faculty retirement

8:45

fund. The

8:49

company behind Chassis P.T. is facing a new

8:51

challenge, a lawsuit from one of the richest

8:53

men in the world, Elon Musk,

8:55

who actually co-founded OpenAI, is now

8:57

suing the company and its CEO

8:59

Sam Altman. He says they've

9:01

abandoned the company's founding agreement to pursue

9:04

artificial intelligence for the good of humanity

9:06

rather than profit. Musk points

9:08

specifically to the GPT-4 model that

9:10

was released last year, saying its

9:12

design is shrouded in secrecy and

9:14

driven by commercial considerations. And

9:16

now his lawsuit seeks to keep

9:19

anyone, including OpenAI's partner Microsoft, from

9:21

benefiting from OpenAI's technology. Though

9:23

it is worth noting, Musk has since founded

9:25

his own AI startup as a for-profit entity.

9:28

OpenAI has not responded just yet. The

9:33

second Dune movie was such a hit, it propelled

9:35

the U.S. box office to its biggest weekend of

9:37

the year. Dune Part 2 also

9:40

delivered strong results for IMAX. In Fact,:

9:42

it was IMAX's largest March opening ever.

9:44

The movie was originally supposed to be

9:46

released back in November, but Hollywood actors

9:48

were on strike at the time. So

9:50

The movie's big stars like Timothee Chalamet,

9:52

Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh weren't

9:55

able to promote it. And With that,

9:57

the producers decided to delay the release.

10:00

Analysts say that decision probably made a big difference

10:02

in ticket sales since the actors likely helped bring

10:04

in an audience that normally wouldn't be lining up

10:06

to see a sense I knew the. It.

10:08

Also probably helped that the movie got great reviews

10:10

and did not face a whole lot of other

10:13

competition. After June two at the

10:15

most popular movies at the box office where

10:17

Bob Marley One Love, Ordinary Angels and Madam

10:19

Wet. This

10:22

weekend to Basketball stars broke a couple

10:24

of meters scoring records. In. The

10:26

College hoops. Iowa's Caitlin Clark became B

10:28

and C W all time leading scorer

10:30

of either women or men. She dropped

10:32

thirty five points and yesterday's game pushing

10:35

her to three thousand. Six hundred and

10:37

eighty five in her college career and

10:39

plenty of big name started congratulating her

10:41

right away like President Biden, Billie Jean

10:43

King, and Travis Scott. Also, Lebron

10:45

James he broke his own records just one

10:47

day earlier. Schemes became the first player in

10:49

N B A history to score forty thousand

10:51

career points and Los Angeles Lakers are doesn't

10:53

12:05

The Newsworthy, in the drop-down menu that follows. Okay,

12:08

now back to Money Monday. Fidelity

12:10

Investments says the number of 401k accounts

12:12

with balances of at least a million dollars

12:14

rose by more than 40% last

12:17

year. And that means a lot, since Fidelity

12:19

is the nation's largest provider of 401k savings

12:21

plans. It was in large part

12:23

thanks to strong performances in stocks and bonds,

12:26

but also because Fidelity says a good chunk

12:28

of people proactively increased their contribution rate last

12:30

year, and most of them were getting matching

12:32

contributions from their employers. All that

12:34

said, the overall number of 401k millionaires is

12:36

still low. Fidelity says the average 401k balance

12:39

is about $119,000, still up from the average

12:41

just one

12:44

year earlier. The trends look similar with

12:46

Fidelity IRAs, too. The company says

12:48

the key to building a healthy retirement account is

12:51

to aim to save at least 15% of

12:53

your income a year, and to stay the course no

12:55

matter what happens with the market. All

12:59

right, thank you so much for listening today. We'll be

13:01

back tomorrow. For now, have a great day.
