Today is Monday, March 11th. We'll tell you

0:02

where millions of Americans are going to be

0:04

facing the elements at the start of this

0:06

workweek. Another winter storm is hitting several states.

0:09

Also, we'll explain the findings from the

0:11

Pentagon's new wide-ranging report into UFO sightings.

0:14

Plus, the fallout from ongoing hacks

0:16

at major American companies. Which

0:18

small Trader Joe's item is now reselling

0:21

for nearly 200 times its retail price.

0:23

And the biggest moments from last night's Academy

0:25

Awards. Those stories and more news to

0:27

know, next. Welcome,

0:31

welcome to The Newsworthy. All the day's

0:33

news in around 10 minutes. Fast, fair,

0:36

fun, and on the go. I'm Air

0:38

Commande. Thanks so much for being here.

0:40

You ready? Let's do this. A

0:46

winter storm is hitting parts of 10 states

0:48

in the northeastern U.S. The storm system really

0:50

got going yesterday, bringing wet, heavy snow and

0:52

strong winds to millions of people from the

0:55

Great Lakes into Pennsylvania and all the way

0:57

up to Maine. Well, that same

0:59

storm system continues today with even

1:02

more cold, blustery winds in major

1:04

cities like New York City, Boston,

1:06

Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. And

1:09

for parts of Pennsylvania, New York, and northern New

1:11

England, there are still snow watches and warnings

1:13

in place, too. Meanwhile, back-to-back

1:15

winter storms are in the forecast for the northwest

1:17

this week, and it could end up bringing quite

1:19

a bit of snow to places like Colorado and

1:21

Utah by the middle of the week. A

1:25

former President Trump is holding off on paying

1:28

writer E. Jean Carroll the damages that she

1:30

won in a defamation lawsuit. But

1:32

Trump is still paying up. Trump

1:34

posted a nearly $92 million bond

1:37

in a New York court. And that way,

1:39

he can appeal the $83.3 million a jury ordered him to pay

1:43

Carroll. Remember, a separate jury

1:45

found him liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the

1:47

1990s and later defaming

1:49

her while in office. In New

1:51

York, the bond is more than the amount he

1:53

was ordered to pay on purpose. That way, the

1:55

money is there to go to the defendant, even

1:57

if the appeal fails. Trump referenced

2:00

the bond at a rally in Georgia over the weekend,

2:02

saying he just paid tens of millions of dollars

2:04

on what he called a fake story made up, quote,

2:06

by a woman that I knew nothing about, didn't

2:08

know, never heard of. Similar comments

2:11

to those sparked the whole defamation case

2:13

in the first place. Though Carol's

2:15

legal team has not said anything about those latest

2:17

statements. And for now, Trump is still fighting this

2:19

and many other cases. The

2:23

security situation in Haiti has now

2:25

gotten so out of control that

2:27

the US military has airlifted American

2:29

personnel out of Port-au-Prince and

2:32

other military personnel were sent in to

2:34

protect the embassy. The Caribbean nation has

2:36

descended into chaos with gangs overturning the

2:38

Capitol and the government on the verge

2:40

of collapse. Gangs have attacked

2:42

police stations and prisons, looted seaports and

2:45

public buildings, shut down the airport and

2:47

block shipments of critical supplies like food.

2:50

All the while Haiti's prime minister is

2:52

stranded in Puerto Rico as gang members

2:54

demand his resignation. Caribbean leaders

2:56

are holding an emergency meeting today to

2:58

address what they're calling a dire situation.

3:00

The US also says it's working

3:03

with Caribbean nations to find a resolution. The

3:07

former president of Honduras has now been convicted

3:09

of drug trafficking here in the United States.

3:12

One Orlando Hernandez was actually once seen

3:14

as a reliable Central American partner by

3:16

both the Obama and Trump administrations. But

3:19

now the Justice Department says Hernandez was at

3:21

the center of one of the largest and

3:24

most violent drug trafficking conspiracies in the world.

3:26

Specifically, the DEA administrator said the former

3:29

Honduran leader worked hand in hand with

3:31

a notorious Mexican cartel leader to send

3:33

tons of deadly drugs into American communities.

3:36

Prosecutors say he took millions of dollars in bribes

3:39

and he used his military and national

3:41

police force to enable a so-called cocaine

3:43

superhighway to the United States. Hernandez

3:46

now faces a minimum of 40 years in prison

3:48

and could end up with a life sentence. He

3:51

said to be sentenced this summer. The

3:55

Pentagon has released its findings from

3:57

its latest investigation into UFOs and

3:59

extraterrestrials. It turned up no

4:01

evidence of hidden alien technology or programs

4:03

and no alien visits to Earth. Congress

4:05

ordered this report in response to a recent

4:07

increase in claims that the military was hiding

4:10

UFO evidence. Some of those claims

4:12

even came from former government officials. So,

4:14

the U.S. Defense Department says it approached

4:16

the report with an open mind and

4:19

no preconceived notions but

4:21

that in the end it found nothing out of the

4:23

ordinary. And now this 63-page

4:25

document is the most sweeping rebuttal the

4:27

Pentagon has issued on the subject, insisting

4:29

there's no cover-up. But this

4:31

still won't be the last word. Congress mandated

4:34

a second report and passed a measure

4:36

last year ordering the National Archives to

4:38

declassify more records. NASA and

4:41

U.S. intelligence agencies are also looking at

4:43

ways to collect more comprehensive data about

4:45

unexplained sightings. So, stay tuned. We

4:50

have much more news for you still ahead. But first, a

4:52

6:03

now back to the news. The

6:07

Muslim celebration of Ramadan has just

6:09

begun. It's Islam's holiest time. For

6:11

the next month, 1.8 billion Muslims around

6:14

the world are expected to observe Ramadan

6:16

by fasting every day from dawn to

6:18

sunset. It's meant to bring them closer

6:20

to God and remind them of suffering of those less fortunate.

6:23

On top of abstaining from eating, drinking, and

6:25

smoking, many Muslims will strictly observe prayers, read

6:28

the Quran, and donate to charity. Then

6:30

after the sun goes down, family and friends will

6:32

get together for nightly feasts. Finally,

6:34

at the end of the month, there's a big three-day

6:36

celebration called Eat Al Fitr, which means the festival of

6:39

the breaking of the fast. People will

6:41

gather, eat, and give gifts to mark the end of Ramadan.

6:46

Microsoft says Russian spies just keep

6:48

breaking into its systems using information from

6:50

a recent hack. The company says

6:52

first the Russian government hackers were able to

6:54

get into executives' emails. And since

6:56

then, they've apparently been leveraging what they

6:59

stole to try to break into customers'

7:01

computer systems too. Plus, it

7:03

says Russia's foreign intelligence service has been escalating

7:05

their attacks and Microsoft itself looking

7:07

for even more new areas to compromise. Intelligence

7:11

officials around the world have warned potential victims.

7:13

They've reached out to people who use

7:15

cloud services like Microsoft's Office programs and

7:17

Outlook email, giving them recommendations about how

7:20

to shore up their security. Separately,

7:22

a hack we told you about weeks

7:24

ago that impacted the country's largest healthcare

7:26

payment system is still causing some problems.

7:28

A lot of medical care providers are now having a

7:31

hard time making ends meet, and the

7:33

hospital industry is calling it the most significant

7:35

cyberattack on the U.S. healthcare system in American

7:37

history. The issue is the

7:40

cyberattack forced the shutdown of parts of

7:42

the electronic system operated by Change Healthcare,

7:45

which is part of UnitedHealth Group. It

7:47

has left hundreds, if not thousands, of

7:49

providers unable to obtain insurance approval for

7:51

all kinds of services, and

7:53

some, like chemotherapy and other drugs, can cost

7:55

hundreds of millions of dollars a month. Providers

7:58

are not able to be paid. and are being

8:00

forced to take out loans or in some cases train their

8:02

own bank accounts. Now the Biden

8:05

administration is asking UnitedHealth groups to expedite

8:07

payments to providers. U.S. health

8:09

officials say they're also letting providers apply to

8:11

Medicare for accelerated payments to tide them over,

8:14

and they're asking health insurers to waive

8:16

or relax prior authorization rules. Meanwhile,

8:18

United says it's hoping to be able to reconnect

8:20

the critical network soon. The

8:24

American video game industry's largest union

8:26

to date has now been created.

8:28

Hundreds of software testers at Activision

8:30

Blizzard have decided to unionize after

8:32

Microsoft's takeover of the company last

8:34

year. Activision Blizzard is behind blockbuster

8:37

games like Call of Duty. As

8:39

part of its effort to get regulators to

8:41

sign off, Microsoft signed a first-of-its-kind pact to

8:44

remain neutral if workers wanted to unionize. And

8:46

now quality assurance workers have capitalized on

8:48

it. Those are the employees who vent

8:51

games for glitches and bugs. And

8:53

at Activision Blizzard, that can be an important

8:55

task. Since it's the company behind big blockbusters

8:57

like Call of Duty, let the

8:59

workers emphasize the need for labor protections

9:02

saying their roles are undervalued as compared

9:04

to software engineers or developers. Now

9:06

the union says it's seeking higher wages

9:09

and more career opportunities. And

9:11

Microsoft says it's looking forward to continuing

9:13

its relationship with the employees through their

9:15

bargaining representatives. Another

9:18

viral product seems to be causing a

9:20

frenzy around the country. This time it's

9:22

a mini canvas tote bag from Trader

9:24

Joe's. Shoppers have been lining

9:27

up for restocks and swarming store displays.

9:29

Trader Joe's says the tote is just big enough

9:31

for a small paperback book paired with cheese and

9:33

a baguette. It looks just like

9:36

the standard reusable grocery bag but a little

9:38

bit smaller. And it's only available for

9:40

a limited time and it costs just three

9:42

dollars in stores. But sets of four

9:44

are being listed for as much as 500

9:46

dollars on eBay. Now some stores

9:48

are having to place limits on the amount people buy.

9:51

Others are hanging signs saying the bags won't

9:53

be available again until next year. As

9:58

expected, the 96th Academy of Orange was

10:00

dominated by the historical drama Oppenheimer.

10:02

It won Best Picture plus its

10:04

director Christopher Nolan won for Best

10:07

Directing and a couple of

10:09

the movie's stars, Killian Murphy and Robert Downey

10:11

Jr. won for acting just to

10:13

name a few of the highlights. Critics

10:15

say the movie's standout night gave hope

10:17

that traditional cinema hasn't been totally lost

10:19

to franchise sequels and superheroes. In

10:22

fact in Nolan's acceptance speech he pointed out

10:24

that movies are just a little bit over

10:26

a hundred years old so really the film

10:28

industry is just beginning. As he

10:30

put it quote, imagine being there 100 years into

10:33

painting or theater we don't know where the

10:35

incredible journey is going from here. Other

10:37

big winners include Emma Stone who won Best

10:39

Actress for Poor Things, Daveyne Joy Randolph who

10:42

won Best Supporting Actress for The Holdovers and

10:44

Billie Eilish and Phineas O'Connell who won Best

10:46

Song for What Was I Made For as

10:49

featured in the Barbie movie. Other

10:51

talked about moments came from John Cena

10:53

who presented the award for Best Costumes

10:55

without any clothes on saying it was

10:58

proof that costumes are important. Barbie

11:00

star Ryan Gosling who presented with Oppenheimer

11:02

star Emily Blunt. They roasted each other

11:04

about the friendly rivalry between their two

11:06

movies that came out on the same

11:08

day. Gosling also performed

11:10

the Barbie ballad I'm Just Ken in

11:12

an over-the-top performance that ended with fireworks.

11:17

That's it for the main news and now it's

11:19

time for Money Monday when we talk about one

11:21

12:29

Okay, now back to Money Monday. There

12:31

could be some relief coming for anyone who

12:33

misses a payment on their credit card. Federal

12:36

regulators issued a new rule last week capping

12:38

credit card late fees at just eight dollars

12:40

for the biggest credit card issuers. That's

12:42

of course much lower than the current average of

12:44

thirty two dollars. And overall the

12:46

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimates the change

12:48

will save customers ten billion dollars a

12:50

year. Consumer advocates praised this measure

12:53

saying it will help millions of credit card users

12:55

who end up having to pay late fees from

12:57

time to time. But banking and

12:59

credit card companies are promising legal action to stop

13:01

the rule from going into effect. The

13:03

American Bankers Association says the move will just

13:05

cause more late payments, higher debt, lower credit

13:07

scores, and reduce credit access for people who

13:10

need it most. For now the

13:12

change is set to take effect in two minutes. Alright,

13:16

thank you so much for joining us and listening

13:18

today. We'll be back tomorrow. For now have a

13:20

great day. you
