1:15
chapter with Primm's Rippepad is a production
1:17
of iHeartRadio. Hey, everybody.
1:20
It's Primm. Welcome to the next
1:22
chapter presented by Baron Davis and Schlick
1:24
studios. Well, this week, we are shaking
1:27
things up and doing something a little different
1:29
for those who are watching this episode. You might notice
1:31
that I'm not buy my
1:34
bookcase at home. And, yes,
1:36
we are taking the next chapter on
1:38
the road. So I was recently tabbed
1:41
as the host and co organizer
1:43
and advisor to this nationwide multi
1:45
city, multi university tour
1:47
in series, LG transparent
1:50
Conversations. addressing student
1:52
athlete, mental health, and well-being.
1:54
And this content was so good
1:57
and so important. I thought it was really
1:59
important that we
1:59
reair some of these conversations right
2:02
here
2:02
on the next chapter. So
2:05
LG transparent conversations is
2:07
a live to take pie cat series powered
2:09
by LG Electronics USA
2:12
exploring mental health within
2:14
the world of athletics and academia. And
2:16
in this series, I alongside a
2:18
number of important guests explore
2:20
a wide range of topics from.
2:23
the stressors of the modern student
2:25
athlete experience, to the consequences
2:28
of these stressors, to the role of support
2:30
systems, and to finally life
2:33
after the game ends. So we'll be
2:35
making stops all over the place, including Duke
2:37
University, myama modter, and
2:39
Loyola Marymount University in Los
2:41
Angeles, list. So I'm traveling all over the country
2:44
for this mini series, bringing these
2:46
conversations directly to athletes
2:49
administrators and other community
2:51
members to help address this
2:53
important issue. And each panel
2:56
will feature not only a different topic,
2:58
but a different set of panelists who
3:00
all bring just a unique perspective,
3:02
which means you'll be hearing from current
3:04
student athletes, former
3:06
student athlete, some who even played at the
3:08
pro levels, mental health experts,
3:10
clinicians, key administrators, you're
3:13
gonna hear it all.
3:15
and LG is on a mission
3:17
to make their tagline life's good more
3:20
than just a saying. And with this series, we
3:22
hope to spark Transparent
3:25
conversations. Conversations we
3:27
hope will make a difference. In and
3:29
out of the classroom, as well as
3:31
on and off
3:32
the Quarton field.
3:34
So without
3:35
further ado, here's a first episode of
3:37
this LG Transparent conversation
3:39
series at my alma mater, Duke University,
3:42
enjoyeding us on this panel, is
3:44
Nina King, Vice President
3:46
and the Director of Athletics
3:49
for University. Dr.
3:51
Sean Zeppelin, the Assistant Director
3:53
of Athletics and Behavioral Health, for
3:55
Duke and former Duke Men's
3:57
basketball and NBA player
3:59
Henderson,
4:00
Jr.
4:12
Okay. Our mics are live.
4:15
Do not
4:15
say anything inappropriate. We
4:17
got some
4:17
recruits here. I believe we have
4:19
a tennis recruit out
4:21
here, shout out. This is the
4:24
best recruiting trip ever. You get Duke a
4:26
little shout out. The good
4:28
news is I'm not a coach, so that might have been an
4:30
entity a violation. We'll just stop right
4:31
there so we don't get anything in trouble
4:33
here.
4:34
Okay. So everybody
4:36
who is now just joining us, welcome to
4:38
transparent Conversations nationwide
4:41
multi city, multi university tour
4:45
and mini series talking about a
4:47
very important topic student athlete,
4:49
mental health, and well-being. So we just had a
4:51
full conversation about the stressors of
4:53
the modern experience of
4:56
student athletes And now, we are
4:58
gonna do a little q and a. So right now,
5:00
we have Gerald Henderson for those
5:02
that do not know, former men's
5:04
Duke basketball player, also longtime NBA
5:06
player as well and also doctor Sean
5:09
Zeppelin with Duke Athletics.
5:11
Okay. So let us begin.
5:13
The first question that some of the
5:15
some student athletes submitted, what do you
5:17
think we as student athletes can
5:19
do to move this conversation
5:22
forward.
5:23
I'll begin so I can
5:25
give everybody some time to think about this. So
5:27
we're looking at some of these questions live we want to make
5:29
sure this is really interactive and we
5:31
want to give the audience and listeners a chance to
5:33
participate in this conversation. know
5:35
what? I think that The
5:37
first thing is also really
5:40
educating yourself on this topic
5:42
and really being motivated
5:45
to dive into this in different
5:47
ways. I think first and foremost, you
5:49
know, the the first step to this
5:51
is really recognizing that
5:53
we are people first before
5:56
being an athlete. And I think we can when
5:58
you can leave with that as your north star,
6:00
recognize that I am a human being
6:02
first, I am a person, then
6:04
that can really shape the
6:07
rest of your trajectory. And By leading
6:09
with that, then you can say, okay, because
6:11
I'm a person, before I'm an athlete.
6:13
What do I like? What do I like outside
6:15
the sports? Who am I? Who do I want to
6:17
become? What do I want to do after
6:19
sports and all those different things? Doctor
6:21
Z, anything that comes to mind?
6:22
I think really starting to
6:25
have like honest and vulnerable conversations
6:27
with, like, your friends, your teammates,
6:29
and and really starting to to
6:31
dive a little bit deeper, you know, rather than just,
6:33
like, oh, how is practice? Or, you know, how
6:35
to do on that test. Like, we really wanna have
6:38
more of those conversations to start modeling
6:40
that and making it okay, you know, You
6:43
know, I said earlier, I usually just, like, try to start
6:45
with the small things and, you know, Duke, within
6:47
our teams just trying to get them to be, like, you
6:49
know, walk by each other every day and we say,
6:51
like, how are you? Like, let's
6:53
one. Duke, if you're gonna ask that question, mean
6:55
it. And two, like, that you wanna
6:57
know. And two, if if you're not
6:59
okay, like, say what's going on. Don't just
7:01
do the pre programmed on good, keep moving.
7:03
Like, as it starts to help, like, normalize
7:05
the idea. Like, we're just just
7:07
being honest with each other. Yeah.
7:09
And, Gerald, do you think that's something that athletes,
7:12
whether it's at the collegiate or professional level,
7:14
could potentially get
7:16
that idea, get used to that idea of,
7:18
like, hey, right
7:21
now, I'm
7:22
not I'm not feeling like myself, I'm not feeling
7:24
okay. Is that something that we could get used
7:26
to?
7:28
Well, you're not feeling okay. I mean,
7:30
that is something that
7:32
you're gonna have to face
7:34
not every day, but in your life. Right?
7:36
So
7:38
seek to help. Right? You, like I
7:40
said earlier, checking
7:41
with yourself every day if you're not feeling
7:44
great today. I'll
7:46
let doc. Right? You
7:48
know,
7:48
lean
7:49
lean on some people around
7:52
you. you know,
7:54
and lean on positive thinking.
7:56
When we when you said, what
7:59
can push the conversation
7:59
forward, it
8:01
made me think about Just
8:03
the other day, my daughter was just going
8:05
on and on about how unfair
8:08
she thought it was at school that the boys getting
8:10
don't get in trouble for close
8:14
for different issues. That's why I said, well,
8:17
you
8:17
know, why
8:18
don't you do something about it? Why don't
8:20
you go to the school and
8:22
talk to them and say, hey, this is this
8:24
is an issue that we're having. I wanna put together
8:26
a committee. I wanna do something. Right.
8:28
Interesting. So what I would say to the students
8:30
is push it
8:32
forward yourself. Do you think that
8:35
who Nina just left. Do you think that if you went to
8:37
Nina and say, hey, we wanna
8:39
have a conversation like this. We
8:41
wanna start involving more kids
8:43
at school and talking about
8:45
mental health. We
8:46
we
8:47
wanna get a truck. I I don't
8:49
I don't want to We just put a lot of
8:52
ideas and things like that. Hey,
8:54
we wanna we wanna get together and talk
8:56
about this. What can we do? what are our
8:58
options. Right? Push it forward yourself. You
9:00
know? Don't don't wait on anybody
9:02
else to do it. You guys can
9:03
do it just understand
9:05
where you're at. You
9:07
guys are are the leaders of
9:10
the future here. We're at Duke just
9:12
just in case you did not know.
9:15
the basketball players. Hopefully, the guys
9:17
are guys you're gonna go watch in
9:19
the NBA. Some of the other
9:22
students as well go be professional athletes
9:24
and then you got some some students here
9:26
that are doing some things all across the
9:28
world. And so just understand who
9:30
you are and the power that you have and
9:32
what you're capable of doing. I
9:34
love that. That's a great point. Being the leader,
9:36
being the leader in your own life and also
9:38
being the leader for others as well. So that
9:40
question actually might be similar to this one.
9:42
This particular person wrote,
9:44
it feels like sometimes it's hard to talk
9:46
about mental health when you even when you
9:48
see even the pros get flagged.
9:51
example, Naomi Osaka, who's a tennis
9:53
player, and also Kevin Love, obviously
9:55
an NBA player. And when both of
9:57
them came out publicly talking
9:59
about their mental health issues.
10:01
And whoever wrote this, you're right, they did get a
10:03
lot of flack and they and they took some heat.
10:05
And I think it's hard or it's
10:07
easy to see those negative
10:09
comments in that flack, and it
10:11
overwhelm all the support
10:13
that they received. But at least when
10:15
I'm looking at the tennis world, I
10:17
I think Osaka really set the tone
10:20
for it to be okay. Of
10:22
course, that's some of this conversation
10:24
has affected her reputation and all
10:26
this other stuff. But the
10:28
fact of the matter is is that, sure,
10:30
these there's always gonna be critics
10:32
and people that judge your journey. ultimately,
10:35
these people are not living your life. This
10:37
is your life to to
10:39
live. So, doctor Z, is there
10:41
anything that comes to
10:41
mind when you when you hear this? I I think
10:43
it goes back to it was something I said earlier
10:46
about the idea that, like, you know, be
10:48
objective. Like, listen to everything. You know? And
10:50
and as you see, know,
10:52
like like you said from there was there was
10:54
negativity. And I don't wanna
10:56
speak for Naomi or, you know, anyone else
10:58
that's talked about this, but I would wonder, like, was it
11:00
net positive? Like, do you still feel like you've got more
11:02
support by talking about it? Mhmm.
11:04
Then, you know, there's always gonna be, you
11:06
know, especially, I don't wanna
11:08
Duke the deep dive into social media now, but there's always gonna
11:10
be the people that that don't like what you said.
11:12
Absolutely. You could go out and say anything.
11:14
Someone's not gonna like it. you
11:16
know, but I think over
11:18
the past few years, those conversations have
11:20
been that positive. You know, we see
11:22
now, like, a couple years ago, it
11:24
was, you know, like,
11:26
one or two pro athletes talking about this.
11:28
And now I I feel like it's, like, one or two a
11:30
month, like, with the conversation is
11:32
continuing to go forward. Someone had to go
11:34
first. and that's hard. But
11:36
I think we've it's kept pushing it
11:38
forward, and we now have more people that are
11:40
comfortable talking about it, and it and it lessens
11:43
the negativity around it. whenever
11:46
something's new and fresh, people
11:48
are gonna have some opposition to it. You're
11:50
gonna hit a wall somewhere. But
11:52
you gotta
11:53
put that to the side and and then to add
11:55
to that is, you
11:57
know, it's it's it's
11:59
a challenging thing. However,
12:01
you know,
12:02
like Osaka
12:03
goes out there
12:05
and you know,
12:06
she's focusing on herself. Your
12:08
mental health is about you. You
12:10
know?
12:10
no When
12:11
someone opposes it, Now
12:14
they're getting involved in your mental health,
12:16
which is not
12:18
a part of your own mental health.
12:20
So
12:20
focus on yourself, put everyone
12:23
else's opinions to decide. And
12:25
you know what, Naomi, Osaka,
12:27
just for context, she was also at
12:29
one point the richest and
12:31
wealthiest female athlete
12:34
across the board in
12:36
the world. So that
12:38
should tell you enough
12:40
about all the flack that she
12:43
got because she also got
12:45
a tremendous amount of support for that
12:47
too. And also Kevin Love as well, I mean, a
12:49
couple years later, you know, the MVPA
12:52
established a mental health program for the
12:54
players. So Okay.
12:56
Next question. How do you think conversations
12:58
around athletes and mental health
13:00
has evolved over the years? I
13:03
can chime in here. I mean, well, I
13:05
mean, if we if we look Duke
13:08
just by itself, you're
13:09
here and
13:10
you weren't here when I was here
13:12
and you weren't here when Joe was here.
13:14
And now you have a full fledged staff.
13:16
I mean, how many people I
13:19
mean, your department didn't really
13:21
necessarily exist. And also, the one
13:23
person that I know who's been
13:25
a mentor and a such
13:28
a significant figure in the Duke community
13:30
of is, of course, doctor Greg Dale. He
13:32
was a sports psychologist and continues to
13:34
be here. And I wanted to give him a shout shout
13:36
out as well because he's battling a a
13:38
severe severe illness.
13:40
But he was a part of that. But when you
13:42
look at your department, I mean,
13:44
it's grown. I mean, and
13:46
it's not just here. I mean, when
13:48
I was in grad school, you know, and I said this
13:50
was the job I wanted to do, and I like,
13:53
I had you know,
13:55
advisors that were like, it's not really a
13:57
thing. You know, Duke, and my advisor was one of
13:59
the people that was doing it,
13:59
but there are
14:01
maybe thirty people around the country that
14:03
were doing this and not all of them were full
14:05
time. They were, you know, kinda consulting in
14:07
a department and that.
14:09
And now,
14:11
it's pretty common, you know, that that
14:13
you see it and it's not, you know, even
14:15
back then, it was like if some they had somebody,
14:17
they had one person maybe half time. Yeah.
14:19
Now, like, there's a lot of departments. You know,
14:21
we're doing great things here too, and there are people doing
14:23
great things in other schools around the country where they
14:25
they have responded to it. So, I mean,
14:27
I think in the last fifteen
14:29
years or so, this has grown
14:32
because people have been talking about it.
14:34
Yeah.
14:34
Yeah. You know, when I think
14:36
about how this has really grown over the years,
14:38
I mean, I think you have to think about. If I'm coming
14:40
at from my doctoral training perspective, we've
14:42
certainly there's
14:43
more literature. There's more research being done
14:45
on athletes and mental health. there's
14:47
more personnel. And universities
14:49
across the board, whether it's at the Power five
14:51
Conference, D1D2D3 they're
14:53
doing their best to kind of flush
14:55
out their apartments and really provide that support. And and
14:57
we're seeing it on social media as well.
15:00
You know, a lot of people are talking about
15:02
this. Okay.
15:02
So
15:05
this is this is a a little off
15:07
topic, but we're, you know, we are
15:10
we are want to invite all things. So
15:12
to all, your favorite players growing up
15:14
watching would love to
15:15
know your childhood influences.
15:20
That's the easy one for me. Go. Kobe
15:22
Bryant. Yeah.
15:23
I mean,
15:25
the he
15:27
grew up you know, I guess
15:29
in in high school, right, in
15:31
Pennsylvania, right up the street from where I
15:33
went to high school, I watched
15:35
him as a young kid and
15:37
you know, in a basketball sense,
15:40
idolized him, and I wanna do everything
15:42
like him, and, you know, rest in peace to
15:44
him. But you know,
15:46
he's obviously left his mark. And
15:48
then also my dad my dad played in the
15:50
NBA for thirteen years and
15:52
won three NBA championship. So I
15:54
wanted to do all Duke the same
15:56
things.
