Do You Really Need Motivation?

In this episode of The Overweight Mind, I discuss all things motivation. What is motivation (the two types) ~ Is it really? Is it necessary for success? How can you create it when it’s gone?

What is Motivation and Do We Really Need It

Motivation refers to the driving force behind our actions, desires, and behaviors. It is the internal or external factor that stimulates us to pursue a particular goal, task, or outcome. Motivation is what energizes us, directs our behavior, and sustains our efforts over time.

There are two main types of motivation:

Intrinsic motivation: This type of motivation comes from within oneself. It involves engaging in an activity because it is inherently rewarding, enjoyable, or fulfilling. Examples of intrinsic motivation include pursuing a hobby because it brings personal satisfaction or studying a subject out of genuine interest.

Extrinsic motivation: Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, comes from external factors such as rewards, punishments, or social pressures. It involves engaging in an activity to earn a reward or avoid a negative consequence. Examples of extrinsic motivation include studying to earn good grades, working to receive a paycheck, or exercising to win a competition.

Motivation can be influenced by various factors, including:

*Personal goals and values

*Expectations of success or failure

*Past experiences and achievements

*Social and cultural norms

*Environmental factors

*Emotional states, such as excitement, fear, or enthusiasm

Why we lose motivation and how to get it back:

Understanding motivation is essential for achieving personal and professional goals, as it plays a crucial role in determining our persistence, effort, and overall performance in pursuing desired outcomes.

Losing motivation can happen for various reasons, including burnout, lack of clear goals, feeling overwhelmed, or experiencing setbacks.

5 steps to help you regain motivation:

#1 Reflect on your goals ~ Why did you start?: Take some time to reassess your short-term and long-term goals. Are they still meaningful to you? Are they achievable? Adjust your goals to align with your current circumstances and aspirations if necessary.

#2 Break tasks into smaller steps ~ Rocks vs Boulder: Feeling overwhelmed can lead to a loss of motivation. Break down your tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This makes them feel less daunting and allows you to make progress incrementally, which can boost your motivation as you see yourself moving forward.

#3 Find inspiration ~ manufacture urgency: Seek out sources of inspiration that resonate with you. This could be reading books, watching motivational videos, listening to podcasts, or talking to mentors or peers who inspire you. Surround yourself with positivity and motivation to reignite your own enthusiasm.

#4 Create a supportive environment. Who’s influencing you? Evaluate your environment and identify any factors that may be contributing to your lack of motivation. These could include distractions, negative influences, or disorganization. Make changes to your environment that support your goals and encourage productivity.

#5 Take care of yourself ~ How are you treating yourself: Remember to prioritize your health and life, as physical and mental well-being play a significant role in motivation. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat healthily, exercise regularly, and manage stress effectively. Taking care of yourself gives you more energy and resilience to tackle challenges and stay motivated.

By implementing these steps, you can gradually regain your motivation and momentum towards achieving your goals. Remember that motivation fluctuates naturally, so be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.
