Today I am thrilled to introduce you to a total boss when it comes to creating copy and content for your business. She is Hannah Mang and she is the go-to copywriter and communication strategist for business owners with big personalities. Hannah has worked in advertising for more than 11 years, she's also a lawyer, speaks 7.5 languages and is currently living out of her suitcase, traveling the world as a digital nomad. Here are some highlights from our conversation:

  • Hannah had really wanted to become her own boss and do her own thing. She had a master’s degree in law and was expected to be a lawyer, but she figured this wasn’t the path for her. She signed up for an online course because back then she didn’t really know what exactly she needed to do to get started in this space. After some time, she decided to offer her free gift, which was a 30-minute call for people who don’t know where to start and what to do. There was a coaching session that she did with a woman where she made a website review and created a content strategy for her website. After some time, the woman returned to her with good news that her website now has more sign-ups and more visitors and that is how Hannah’s copywriting career took off.

  • Design and copy go hand in hand in building your brand. For Hannah though, it is extremely important for the business because it is literally you talking to the people, and this is what sells. Your copy not only sells to people, but it is the one that builds relationships with people, and we all know that building relationships is critical to growing your business. Design should support copy. Great copy is about convincing people and providing value with your words.

  • Hannah observes three major mistakes that entrepreneurs make with their copy. One is that they are not authentic. If you are trying to be somebody else, but people can feel it. It is a huge mistake for your copy is not in alignment with who you are. The second mistake that she observes is when people try to be super professional. A good example would be a third-person bio on the website. Hannah says, your bio should be a way for you to speak directly with your audience, and it is much easier if you shift towards what you can offer to your audience, how you can make them feel safe and how you can prove to your audience that you can help them in a couple of paragraphs.

  • You need to use the opportunity to connect with people using your about page. Hannah says that, at first you need to make your readers care and you need to establish a connection first before they care about you. If people see that you care, then they will have time to care about you. You have 2 seconds to decide whether people are going to read on your website or leave your site and forget about you. Every word on your website has to count.

  • She advises to first, talk about your audience. Establish a connection with your audience: show them that you understand them. Later on, you are ready to talk about yourself. Position yourself as an authority in your space. Show your audience that they can trust you. You need to position your copy in a way that people can relate to it and actually would care about it. No one wants to feel that they are talking to a website.

  • It is also important to not try too hard to be different. It is the same trap as trying to be someone else. You just need to be you. If you can leverage that in your copy, that will be amazing. You have to have a strong sense of self and it will show on your brand, on your copy.

  • She advises that to create a great sales page, you first need to know your audience. It is critical because if you know whom you’re talking to, you save yourself a lot of work. You need to know who your audience is and where they are at. The first place to start with is to start at where your audience is at. It is important that you let them know you understand. Next step is to bring them to the place where they want to be at. You need to position yourself as the no-brainer choice. You need to bridge the gap as you are the person who is bringing your audience from the place they are currently at to the place they would like to be or their ultimate vision. Be very specific in your language. Allow yourself to be specific in your descriptions in your language because this triggers the emotions and senses. Emotion is always the one thing that triggers action – so if you want people to take action, then you need to trigger emotion.

  • If you want people to come in, you need to open up first. You have to be vulnerable, and you have to show up. When you are trying to attract new people or trying to usher people into your audience, you have to dig deep and put yourself out there. People are sensitive to where they are spending their money. They have to see the need to what you are offering so that they will be willing to spend their money on you. If you are not specific with your words, people are not going to be willing to give you their money. Be very specific but don’t just describe the features – talk about the benefits. Make a specific promise and deliver that.
