Louis Thompson interviews Sean Swarner for the pioneers podcast. At the age of 13 Sean was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer that left him with only 3 months to live. After treatment Sean survived only to discover at the age of 16 that he had another, completely different form of cancer. He was told by the doctors that he only had 14 days to live and was read his last rights by a pastor. Within 24 hours the doctors performed a needle biopsy, removed a lymph node, placed a permanent IV, cracked his ribs to remove the tumour and started chemotherapy. For most of his 16th year Sean was in a medical induced coma in order to cope with the much more aggressive treatment. Miraculously, Sean outlived the 14 day prediction and has now been in remission for 16 years. He became the first cancer survivor to summit Everest and complete the 7 summit challenge as well as taking part in the Hawaii ironman world championship, all with only one functioning lung. Sean also co-founded the non-profit organisation www.CancerClimber.org to share his survivorship story and spread hope. His organisation also enables people who have been touched by cancer to achieve the things they couldn't have whilst they were ill. To find out more about Sean visit www.seanswarner.com.
