The Poor Man’s Morning and Evening Portions by Robert Hawker is a great devotional classic. Originally published in small “penny” portions so as to be affordable to the poor. It is now provided free in podcast format. The printed edition of these daily devotionals ran through numerous editions in the nineteenth century and served as spiritual food and drink for thousands. Robert Hawker served as the vicar of Charles, in Plymouth, England. He excels in Christ-centred, practical divinity. Each of these 730 devotional episodes is complete in itself and according to Hawkers biographer, John Williams "displays great warmth of affection, a lively energy of expression, a graceful flow of language, and an affluent store of scriptural sentiments…There is a lovely simplicity in his sublimest thoughts, and in his humblest themes a becoming dignity."
