Today on the Print Cast we’re bringing you a special presentation from the 2019 IFPDA Fine Art Print Fair in New York. The IFPDA is an organization of expert art dealers who champion the work of artists in the artistic medium of printmaking. Their annual print fair is the largest international art fair devoted to 500 years of fine prints.
Today on the podcast, we join a Conversation with Jeff Koons and Christophe Cherix. Koons is an American artist recognized for his work dealing with popular culture. His widely known mirror finish sculptures depict everyday objects including his monumental balloon animals. A controversial artist at times, Koons divides critics with his kitsch subject matter and art market prowess. At the IFPDA this year, Koons unveiled new editions as part of his Gazing Ball Series. Each piece starts as an archival pigment print of an iconic work of art, seminal works by artists like Gustav Klimpt, Manet, and Guaguin. Resting in front of each image sits a paper-thin, mirror-finish blue Corning Glass disc. Viewers see their reflection in the disc, connecting their likeness to the artwork itself, if only for a moment. The series is published by Two Palms in New York City.
In discussion with Koons is Christophe Cherix, The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints at the Museum of Modern Art. Appointed in 2013, his specialty is modern and contemporary art, with a focus on the 60’s and 70’s.
The Print Cast recorded this episode on Friday October 25th in partnership with the IFPDA. Each day of the print fair includes programming that features the work of artists, master printers, and curators.
