imageDr. John Orlando, Associate Director of Faculty Support at Northcentral University in Vermont joins us with a unique perspective for teaching online.

“I have a confession to make. I was wrong. I was taught wrong.”

In grad school John shares that he was taught how to lecture and grade. Now, after 20 years of research, John shares that those are the least important parts of teaching. Feedback, given live or on assignments is the most important part. Listen in as John explains the why and how-tos of providing effective feedback.

“If you start thinking like a coach, you will transform the whole way you teach.”

Coaches do almost all their teaching through feedback. Yes, grading is a requirement that must be done. However, grading is a minimal part of feedback. John gives an insider’s viewpoint taking us through the process of effective feedback.

“You’re trying to get at the process that led to the product.”

This can take more time, but John shares time-saving tips to make it more manageable. One which includes the advice that we don’t have to solve all of a student’s problems at once. John also shares some favorite tools that can contribute to a “plug, play, and go” model for a more effective coaching style of teaching.
