journey of becoming best friends through love and
0:15
learning , as you train your own dog from
0:17
home , and I'm here to help you every
0:19
step of the way . This is the Puppy Training
0:21
Podcast , and I'm your host , amy Jensen
0:23
. Hey
0:26
you guys , how are you this week ? I
0:28
hope you're doing great . We talk
0:30
about puppies , dogs
0:32
, all things training here on the Puppy
0:34
Training Podcast , and today
0:37
I want to talk about how to help your dog
0:39
or puppy overcome a fear
0:41
that they have . We're coming up
0:43
on Halloween and I thought what better
0:46
topic than fears , right , okay
0:48
? So anytime we
0:50
introduce a new puppy to a family our
0:54
family , your family , whoever family it's
0:56
an exciting experience , but it also comes with
0:58
challenges , and one of those
1:00
would be helping our puppy overcome something they
1:02
are afraid of . Now , puppies , like humans
1:04
, can develop fears of various objects
1:07
, people or even situations , sounds
1:10
, smells , really anything . So
1:12
today let's talk about the use of positive reinforcement
1:15
as an effective method to help your
1:17
puppy overcome fear and build confidence
1:19
, which leads to a happier
1:21
life for everybody involved . Now
1:24
to dive into positive reinforcement techniques
1:26
. It's important that we understand why
1:28
puppies develop fear in the first place
1:30
Now . Common causes include lack
1:32
of exposure Maybe they haven't seen something
1:34
before Negative experiences
1:37
, so maybe something in the past that spooked them
1:39
. They do remember that or even possible
1:41
genetic predispositions . Now , as
1:43
a responsible pet handler , recognizing the
1:45
signs of fear in your puppy is essential . So
1:48
you need to know what their body language looks like
1:50
and what it's telling you . So these signs
1:52
might include trembling , cowering
1:54
, excessive barking , pinned
1:56
ears , a tight mouth or attempting
1:58
to escape . Anytime their body is
2:00
tucked in , curled up
2:03
, looking away , trying to
2:05
get away . Those are all signs
2:07
that our puppy's probably afraid of
2:09
something . Now the key to
2:11
overcoming fear is positive reinforcement
2:13
. This is a training method that encourages
2:16
desired behaviors through rewards and praise
2:18
rather than punishment . When applied
2:20
to helping a fearful puppy , this approach can work
2:22
wonders by creating a safe and encouraging
2:25
environment for them to face their fears . So
2:27
I'm going to give you a couple steps today to
2:30
go through , but the first one
2:32
is identifying the fear
2:34
. The first step is to identify what
2:36
specifically triggers fear in my dog
2:38
. This could be a particular person
2:40
, object or situation , as we mentioned
2:42
. Now , once you've pinpointed the source
2:44
of fear , you can work on desensitizing
2:47
your puppy to it . Maggie is a
2:49
sweet six-month-old Australian Labradoral who
2:51
happens to be afraid of leaves Not
2:53
leaves that are on the tree per se , but
2:55
the leaves that have now fallen in my yard
2:57
, and they're crunchy . So it makes sense
2:59
. Her yard doesn't have large
3:01
mature trees like my yard does , and
3:04
she's not yet even old enough to have experienced
3:06
dry , decaying leaves yet . So this is her
3:08
first go at fall time in Utah
3:10
. Anyway , she came over to my house
3:12
this week for a play date with Baxter and right away
3:14
I noticed she would not play
3:16
in the leaves . So Baxter would be running
3:18
around and she'd be chasing him , and then , as soon as he
3:21
went in the leaves , she'd step or she'd kind
3:23
of skirt around them . She'd run
3:25
around the outskirts of the leaves until Baxter
3:27
came out of the leaves to then continue chasing
3:29
him . So aha , step number
3:31
one I've identified the fear For
3:33
sweet Maggie . It is dry , crunchy leaves
3:36
that make a loud sound . So
3:38
step number two what do we do about it ? Now that we've identified
3:41
her fear is gradual exposure
3:43
. So the next step is to expose
3:45
your dog to the fear inducing stimulus
3:47
gradually . It's really important
3:49
that we remember the word gradually
3:51
. Okay , they should be done in a controlled
3:54
and safe manner . So , for example , if
3:56
you're puppy scared of strangers , I
3:58
might invite a trusted friend or family
4:00
member to visit and interact with my
4:02
dog in a calm and reassuring way . I'm
4:04
going to set them up for success by giving
4:07
my trusted friend and family member explicit
4:10
instructions . Right , they're going to know exactly
4:12
what to do and then
4:14
my dog is also going to be set
4:16
up for success because I know what I'm going to do with my
4:18
dog . That's important . Let's
4:20
say your dog is afraid of sounds . I might start
4:22
by playing recorded sounds in a different
4:24
room on a low level . That's a really great
4:26
way to introduce them to
4:29
the noises . But I can control the volume
4:31
of the noises , which is helpful Because
4:33
if I see my puppy showing signs that they're not
4:35
comfortable with the sounds , I get to make those
4:37
adjustments to help my puppy win
4:40
in that scenario . Now , with
4:42
Maggie and the leaves , I let her see
4:44
and hear Baxter playing in them from a safe
4:46
distance . Even all go join
4:48
in and play in the leaves . We have fun
4:50
in the leaves and we let Maggie decide when
4:53
she is ready to join in . So she's getting this
4:55
nice gradual exposure to
4:57
the crunchy sound of leaves and at the same time
4:59
she's seen Baxter and I have a ball
5:01
inside those leaves . But she gets to decide
5:03
when she wants to participate , all
5:07
right . Step number three is positive associations
5:09
. So while exposing our dogs
5:11
to the fear trigger , use positive
5:13
reinforcement techniques . Whenever
5:15
our dog displays calm , non fearful
5:17
behavior , I reward them with treats , praise
5:19
and or affection , whatever your dog likes . This
5:22
helps your puppy associate the fearful thing
5:24
with positive experiences . It
5:27
is okay to comfort your dog too , if they appear
5:29
nervous . We also want to build
5:31
confidence , so any interaction they give
5:33
you with the fear stimulus , reward them
5:35
. When I see Maggie looking at the leaves , I
5:37
toss a food reward her way . When she steps
5:39
into the outskirts of the leaves again more food
5:42
rewards . I try to get her to play . Play
5:44
is powerful . I ask her to catch your treat
5:46
or go find her treat , as playing games
5:48
helps them forget their fear and they start
5:50
to feel better at the same time . Step
5:53
number four patience and consistency
5:56
. Overcoming fear can be a slow
5:58
process . I like to just jot down in a
6:00
little notebook the little wins we have each
6:02
day to keep me going and to be motivated
6:04
to keep working on it . It's essential
6:07
to be patient and consistent . Consistently
6:09
rewarding positive behavior while gradually
6:12
increasing exposure to whatever
6:14
our dog's fear trigger is will help
6:16
our dog build confidence over time
6:18
. Never , ever , force your dog
6:20
to face their fear . They will overcome it more
6:22
quickly by letting them decide when they are ready
6:25
, and in the meantime , my attitude
6:27
is hey , no big deal , let's move past
6:29
it and we will revisit it from a safe distance
6:31
again . Step number
6:33
five , similar to step number
6:36
four , would be to avoid punishment . So
6:38
it's crucial to
6:41
avoid any form of punishment when dealing
6:43
with a fearful puppy . Punishment can
6:45
exasperate the fear and
6:47
cause trust issues , and we don't want that
6:49
. We want to keep our strong bond with our dog
6:51
and we want them to be able to trust us
6:53
. That will keep them safe . So positive
6:56
reinforcement , on the other hand , builds trust and
6:58
that strong bond that we're talking about between you
7:00
and your dog . If you think
7:02
you can help me like spiders by locking
7:05
me in a room full of spiders , you
7:07
are mistaken . Okay , it's not going
7:09
to work . Putting Maggie in the middle
7:11
of the leaf pile and hoping she enjoys it is
7:13
not the best approach . Rather , baxter
7:15
and I can play and have fun in the leaves
7:18
and then watch for Maggie to become interested . Like we
7:20
talked about in step four , there is a
7:22
thing called opposition reflex , and if a dog
7:24
feels forced to do something , they will often
7:26
resist or push back . We
7:28
do that too right as humans . So
7:30
watch for the good and reward that . Never
7:33
punish , be patient . Number
7:36
six is seek for professional help . In
7:38
some cases , a puppy's fear may be deeply
7:40
ingrained or extreme . In such cases
7:42
, consulting a professional dog trainer or behaviorist
7:45
can be beneficial . Enter Baxter and
7:47
Bella . We can provide expert
7:49
guidance and develop a tailored plan to help you and
7:51
your dog overcome whatever fear they
7:53
are facing . So
7:56
, you guys , do you remember that helping a fearful puppy
7:58
overcome their fears is a rewarding journey
8:00
, but a long one . It can take time and
8:03
again . It takes that patience and consistency
8:05
, which can be hard , I know , but
8:07
it's possible and doable and
8:09
worth it in the end . Remember that working
8:11
with your dog in a positive way strengthens the bond
8:14
between you and them , which is what we want
8:16
. Positive reinforcement based on
8:18
the principles of rewards , patience , consistency
8:21
is a powerful method to help build your
8:23
dog's confidence and alleviate or
8:25
change their fears . Also
8:27
, remember , you guys , that every dog is unique , right
8:29
. That's what we love about them , and the key is to
8:31
tailor your approach to their specific needs and
8:33
fears . So talk to us if you need
8:35
help getting a training plan going . But
8:38
by using positive reinforcement techniques you
8:40
can ensure that your puppy grows into a confident
8:42
and happy adult dog , ready to face
8:44
the world with enthusiasm and
8:46
trust . I'll also plug
8:48
in a little note for those older dogs who have a fear
8:50
. They can definitely overcome them . It
8:52
depends on how long they've been afraid of it and how
8:55
strong that feeling is , on
8:57
how long it will take us to change it . But it's absolutely
9:00
possible . All right , you
9:02
guys have a wonderful week . Happy training . I'll
9:04
