This is the Puppy Training Podcast , episode 161

0:03

, teaching your puppy how to settle and

0:05

relax . This

0:11

podcast is designed to help you on your

0:14

journey of becoming best friends through love and

0:16

learning , as you train your own dog from

0:18

home , and I'm here to help you every

0:20

step of the way . This is the Puppy Training

0:22

Podcast , and I'm your host , amy Jensen

0:24

. Hi

0:28

you guys , I hope you're having a good week . We're

0:30

back from the holidays . At

0:32

the start of a new year . I'm always anxious to

0:34

get back into routines and

0:37

schedules I don't know . It doesn't think of

0:39

for my brain to just know what's happening . The

0:42

holidays are also fun . It's fun to be chaotic and

0:44

relax and chill right

0:46

, which is what we're talking about today on the podcast . How

0:48

do we help our dogs settle and

0:50

relax ? Sometimes it's easier said than

0:52

done . Today , in fact , I have

0:54

an extra dog at my house . I'm boarding a dog

0:57

for a friend While they are on vacation

0:59

. Some are sunny and warm . It's

1:01

okay . It's pretty warm here in Utah too , and

1:04

, yeah , we're just working on

1:06

settling and calm , so you might hear them in the background

1:08

coming and going . I've got three of them and they're working

1:10

on some good chews right now

1:13

and they're being good with them

1:15

, so we'll let them keep chewing and

1:17

then hopefully they're quiet in the background

1:19

but they're settling and relaxing

1:21

, and today I want to teach you guys how to get your dogs

1:23

to do that , even if you have one dog

1:25

or two dogs or , like me , you have three dogs

1:27

at your house . Today , before we

1:30

dive in , make sure you check out our

1:32

classes and courses that are upcoming . So

1:35

everything you guys that we do here

1:37

at Baxter and Bella is currently available

1:39

to our members online . So once you

1:41

sign up and you become a member , you have access to

1:43

everything that we provide

1:46

. Now , occasionally we do

1:48

teach things live , meaning via Zoom , of course

1:50

. So our basic puppy

1:52

training , which is our puppy kindergarten course , our

1:55

games and activities course , we're starting

1:57

a new AKC home manners course all

1:59

of those things are coming up in the month of January

2:01

and you can sign up on our website

2:03

and register to come to those via

2:06

Zoom . So you'll be in your living room with your dog

2:08

at a puppy class . Basically

2:10

, right , you're taking puppy class from home , but

2:12

we're teaching it live . Now everything we teach

2:14

live is already recorded . It's posted on our

2:17

website so you can go and view those courses

2:19

on demand , but it's kind of fun to do a live

2:21

class as well , so check that out if you

2:23

are interested , all right

2:25

. So for the topic of the day , we are talking

2:27

about , again , relaxing

2:29

and getting our puppies to settle . So I

2:31

know that when you bring a new puppy into your home , it

2:34

is an exciting experience , right

2:36

? But with it I also want you to recognize

2:38

the responsibility that we have of teaching

2:41

our puppies essential life skills

2:43

when it comes to living in a human household

2:45

, simply because they are not human

2:47

, all right . So they need to learn things like

2:49

staying calm , practicing patience

2:51

, exercising impulse control , and

2:54

today I want to talk about how you can

2:56

use some effective techniques , or what those techniques

2:58

look like , so that you can achieve these goals of helping

3:01

your dog settle and relax in a human household . So

3:03

we do this through creating routines , using

3:05

positive reinforcement . We like to play

3:07

lots of games , play a super powerful you guys

3:09

, and then some relaxation training

3:11

. So let's talk first about establishing

3:14

a routine . Dogs like to know what to expect

3:16

, right ? I just mentioned that the end

3:18

of the holidays , my brain also

3:20

likes to know what to expect . We do that as humans

3:22

. We like to have you know , and some of my kids are this

3:24

way more so than others , but some of them really

3:26

just do so much better if they know

3:29

what to expect , right , my daughter wants

3:31

to know when the next vacation

3:33

is . She wants to know when soccer

3:35

is . She wants to know , you know , anything

3:37

that she just can wrap her brain around

3:40

and plan on . She starts to relax

3:42

and settle because she knows what to expect

3:44

. Now our dogs are very similar . Are they giving

3:47

them a routine and a ? A

3:49

daily schedule just helps them understand

3:51

what to expect . They thrive

3:53

on predictability and a consistent

3:55

schedule helps them understand when it's time to

3:57

be active and when it's time to

4:00

relax . So designating specific

4:02

periods of play , feeding and rest

4:04

gives your puppy the ability

4:06

to associate certain activities with designated times

4:09

. And then they relax . So when it's playtime

4:11

, practice playing and then settle for

4:13

one to two minutes . That might mean asking

4:15

your dog for a downstate or a

4:17

go-to-bed behavior , right ? Or , if your puppy doesn't

4:19

know those things yet , the verbal cues we

4:22

can lure them into these behaviors to

4:24

help them , teach them , show them

4:26

what to do Now repeat the play

4:28

for two to three minutes so go back to whatever you were

4:30

doing a game or tug

4:33

fetch some kind of physical exercise

4:35

and then go back to settling

4:37

for one to two minutes , which again is just

4:39

helping them come back to that zone one that we talk

4:41

about in our course . So help your puppy learn

4:43

to manage their own behavior by taking breaks often

4:45

and rewarding them for relaxing and

4:48

then return to play , and we're just going to go back and forth

4:50

between the two so they learn to

4:52

self-manage going back and forth

4:54

between the two . Next , let's

4:56

remember positive reinforcement . This serves as

4:58

a powerful tool in shaping our dog's

5:00

behavior . Whenever my puppy exhibits

5:02

calmness or they settle down willingly

5:05

without being asked , even if they just plop

5:07

down on the floor , I like to reward them with a

5:09

treat , food rewards , a praise

5:11

, a little bit of praise or some affection . It doesn't have

5:13

to be big . In fact I don't want to interrupt

5:16

the calm . So what I might do is

5:18

if it helps them drop maybe

5:20

half a little piece of cheerio right in

5:23

between their front paws , or if that gets

5:25

them too excited because it's food and my dog's really

5:27

food motivated , then maybe

5:29

I just say good boy , right . Or

5:32

maybe I just rub their belly a little bit or stroke

5:34

their ears , something that will help them stay

5:36

in that calm position , but I know that they

5:38

like , so this creates a positive

5:40

association with calm behavior , encouraging them to

5:43

repeat it . Consistency in

5:45

rewarding desirable actions is essential for

5:47

reinforcing the behaviors that we want

5:49

to cultivate in our dogs . So here's

5:51

an example for you In the kitchen . Teach

5:53

your dog what gets rewarded , instead

5:56

of them running through the area putting paws

5:58

on counters to see what's up there or trying to beg

6:00

food off of your toddler . Try

6:02

setting a dog bed in the corner of the dining area

6:04

and reward your puppy for laying on it . Good

6:07

, intermittently meaning every so often and

6:10

randomly , with different rewards

6:12

to keep interest in this activity . Over

6:14

time , lengthen the time required

6:16

for the next reward to fall . Now

6:18

you've taught your dog to go lay on a mat in the kitchen and

6:20

that earns them rewards . You've

6:22

taught them a good behavior you like and also

6:24

effectively avoided problem behaviors like

6:27

counter surfing , begging or running

6:29

like crazy in the kitchen area . Teaching

6:31

your puppy to stay on a mat does require some patience

6:33

. Dogs have very little , naturally

6:35

, so we must teach them that waiting

6:38

equals rewards . Training

6:40

your puppy to wait for things requires a patient

6:42

approach . Start with simple exercises

6:45

like making your puppy wait before you

6:47

set down their food bowl or before going outside

6:49

, before you open the door , have them wait and then release

6:51

them to go outside . Using

6:53

little , simple cues like wait or stay throughout

6:55

the day , it really helps your puppy

6:58

understand the concept of I wait and

7:00

something good happens Again

7:02

. That doesn't come naturally to them , that must be

7:04

taught . So be consistent with

7:06

that , be repetitive with that . Use

7:08

it throughout the day so that they understand

7:11

I wait and good things happen

7:13

. So gradually increase the duration

7:15

that you're asking your puppy to wait or stay

7:17

and this helps them become more accustomed to

7:19

the concept of overall patience

7:21

. Consistent repetition and using that

7:23

positive reinforcement that we talked about will

7:26

help your dogs understand the value

7:28

of waiting and that there is value in it . That's

7:30

so foreign to them . I

7:32

like to teach patients to my dogs through games , so

7:35

I try to incorporate games into our daily

7:37

routine . This can be fun and effective

7:39

and it teaches them patience at the same

7:41

time . So try to make everything a game

7:43

if possible . I like to do simple activities

7:46

like wait or stay games because that develops

7:48

impulse control in my dog . If any

7:50

of you have demand barkers , meaning the dog barks

7:52

at you for attention or barks at you to give them food

7:54

faster or barks at you because they

7:57

want something we call

7:59

that demand barking . Teaching them

8:01

to wait or stay helps

8:03

them be patient

8:05

and control their impulses , and that barking

8:07

will go away . So again , start with

8:10

short durations and we just gradually

8:12

increase the time that our puppy is

8:14

willing to wait , so rewarding

8:16

them at two seconds and then five seconds and then

8:18

10 seconds , and then 20 seconds and then 40 seconds

8:20

, and then go back and throw in a couple easy ones like five seconds

8:23

or 10 seconds to surprise them , and

8:25

you'll see that your puppy gets better and better and

8:27

better at waiting . So games not only

8:29

provide mental stimulation for your dogs

8:31

, which is super important , just as important as physical

8:34

exercise but it also creates a positive

8:36

bond between you and your dog . So

8:38

if you need ideas for patience games , check out our website

8:40

. In our members area . We have a games and

8:42

activities page chuck full of

8:45

games that teach patience and

8:47

impulse control . All

8:49

right , let's talk about relaxation training

8:51

, so teaching our puppy . We've already talked a little bit about this

8:53

. Essentially , having our puppy do a stay or

8:55

go to their mat or go to place

8:57

is somewhat of a relaxation

8:59

training process , but

9:02

a little bit more about it would be teaching them that

9:04

it's important overall

9:06

as part of the daily routine . So we like to incorporate

9:08

these short little relaxation sessions into

9:10

our daily schedules and I like to focus

9:13

on calm behavior such as laying down or staying

9:15

quiet , and then again we're just gradually extending

9:17

the durations of these sessions and we reward

9:19

our dogs for maintaining a relaxed state

9:21

. So , like I mentioned before , sometimes when

9:23

we're doing relaxation training , our dogs are on alert

9:26

, like I asked them for a down and they're in

9:28

a down and they're staring at me intently . Okay , they're

9:30

not super relaxed , but they are staying

9:32

and they are waiting . We want to take that

9:34

to the next step of instead

9:36

of them feeling like they're on cue . I want

9:39

to start to notice this relaxation training

9:41

of my dog just naturally

9:43

chooses to lay down and relax and

9:46

I like that and I want that to happen more

9:48

so . Fostering the idea of

9:50

we play and then we settle , and then we play

9:53

and then we settle , and the training

9:55

of the stay and the go to place All

9:57

of these things combine into

9:59

helping our dog be able to naturally relax

10:02

more so on their own throughout

10:04

the day , and you're giving them time because

10:06

of the routine and the structure that you've created , they

10:09

start to relax into it , meaning , oh

10:11

, I know that right now I'm going to settle because it's subtle

10:13

time , and then we're going to go play , and then

10:16

it's maybe great time for a while , right , and then

10:18

we're going to go play and then we're

10:20

going to . You know , amy's

10:22

going to go back to work and I can just settle on this mat next

10:24

to her and take a nap . So that starts

10:26

to happen . As we're creating these daily

10:30

practices of getting our dogs to wait

10:32

and to stay and then alternating

10:34

between play and settle , and play and

10:36

settle , they become better at

10:39

managing their relaxation abilities

10:41

during the day . It becomes part of a

10:43

natural part of them , really . So

10:46

you can introduce your dog to a specific

10:48

cue , such as settle , to signal to your puppy that it's

10:51

time to relax . Try

10:53

using a very calm tone of voice and encourage

10:55

them to lie down in a designated spot and

10:57

then reward them initially for laying down

10:59

in that spot , but then try just

11:02

going about what you're supposed to be doing and see if they'll just relax

11:04

into it . Doing this when they've

11:07

just exercised , right , They've already gotten a drink , they've

11:09

already gone to the bathroom and it's around nap time . It's

11:12

a great time to start to practice some of this , where

11:14

they're settling , not even necessarily

11:16

in their crate or pen anymore . They're out

11:18

here where you are and they're learning to relax

11:20

next to you , so that settle cue

11:22

can be important to signal to them

11:24

it's time to chill Now

11:28

. Also , environment makes a big

11:30

difference , so ensure that your puppy's environment

11:32

supports a calm demeanor right . Minimize

11:34

distractions such as loud noises

11:36

or excessive activity . Try

11:38

to keep things a little more quiet still . There's

11:40

not kids running through the room . If we can

11:42

at all possible , try to create a quiet environment

11:45

. That will help your puppy want to also quiet

11:48

down . Now again , consistency

11:50

is paramount . You guys , be patient and persistent

11:52

in your efforts as we start to train

11:54

, settle and wait behaviors . Understand that

11:56

every dog is unique and the learning process

11:58

takes time right . It's really easy for me to explain

12:01

this to you in 15 minutes , but recognize

12:03

this is going to take some time

12:05

, right , for your puppy to understand and to really

12:07

get the gist of this new

12:09

routine that's happening . So be sure that your

12:11

entire family is on board and they know the rules for your dog

12:14

. The more everyone follows the same rules

12:16

, the quicker your puppy will catch on . So be

12:18

sure to help your puppy see the benefits of following the

12:20

rules using the positive reinforcement techniques

12:22

that we talked about . A little bit of

12:24

a side note on that reward , reward , reward

12:27

that first year of training . You guys Make

12:29

sure you're not bribing your dog but

12:31

rather paying them . This means you ask

12:33

for behavior , the dog gives you behavior

12:35

, then you pay them for it . If

12:37

you get in the habit of showing them the payment

12:40

to bribe them to do something , so you're showing

12:42

them the payment before they're

12:44

actually doing the behavior , they will become

12:46

dependent on seeing what the reward

12:49

is first and you'll even start to see them

12:51

start to decide is it worth it or not . So

12:53

be sure that you lose the lure as quickly as you can when

12:55

teaching new behavior and get to that

12:57

mode of the . I ask for behavior

12:59

, the dog does the behavior , then I pay

13:02

the behavior . Okay , we can help

13:04

you with this inside our members area if you need assistance

13:06

. But you guys remember , training

13:08

your new puppy to settle and wait for things is an investment

13:11

, right ? It's a building a relationship

13:13

between the two of you and it's leading

13:15

to a well behaved canine companion

13:17

, which is what we want when we have a dog living in

13:19

our homes , so through a combination of routine

13:22

positive reinforcement , using specific

13:24

cues like wait , stay or settle

13:26

, and patience , you can guide

13:28

your dog toward a calm and composed

13:31

demeanor . It is possible . Remember

13:33

that building these habits takes time . So approach

13:35

this process with consistency , understanding

13:37

and a commitment to nurturing a

13:39

positive bond with your dog . You guys , I wish

13:42

you the best in 2024 . Happy new year , happy

13:44

training . If
