Start budgeting for free today. Hi,
0:06
George. Hi, John. Just
0:09
calling in. I'm 35 and I'm kind
0:13
of feeling like I failed as a father and just
0:16
trying to make sure that I'm mostly because I'm trying
0:19
to save for a home and this house
0:22
market environment's pretty rough. So
0:24
I just want to make sure I'm on the right track. What
0:26
happened? That's a pretty fighting words right
0:29
there. Well, she has a tough judgment you've cast on
0:32
yourself. Where's that come from? Well,
0:37
I didn't grow up with a... I grew up
0:39
with a broke family until we had a lot
0:41
of broke mentality. And so
0:43
it wasn't recently until I found this
0:45
show a few
0:48
months back where I was like, oh my gosh, I'm old
0:50
and now I got to start from scratch. And
0:52
so I'm debt free. So thank goodness for that.
0:55
That makes John elderly then if 35
0:57
is old. Goodness.
0:59
He's geriatric. Hey, so, but
1:02
you said you failed your family, man. Like,
1:05
why do you think that? Why would you even say those words out
1:07
loud? I
1:11
just want to make sure that
1:13
they're safe and that they're
1:15
set up financially. And I feel like I'm not
1:17
going to be able to help them in
1:20
the future because I'm starting at an
1:22
older age. All right.
1:24
Let me tell you, you may have heard me, if you're new to
1:26
the show, you may not have heard this story. My
1:28
mom was not allowed to go to college for
1:31
cultural reasons, for
1:34
religious regions. And so
1:36
at the age of 42, my dad was always encouraging
1:38
her. He was just a policeman. And he
1:40
was always encouraging her and encouraging her and encouraging her. At
1:43
the age of 42, she took her first community
1:46
college class. And then the next year she took
1:48
another class, next year she took another class and
1:50
she graduated through her PhD at 57. She
1:53
got tenured as a professor at 63, I
1:57
think, or 64. And in this past year,
2:00
Retired in her 70s after her
2:02
last semester at Oxford teaching
2:04
in Oxford. Okay. Why do I tell you that?
2:08
the job part cool the
2:12
Extra income for my family growing up cool.
2:14
That's all fine but
2:17
me in my
2:19
mid 40s now, you know what
2:22
I got I got a ringside seat to watching
2:24
a gangster
2:27
of a mom Change everything
2:29
in her early 40s and
2:32
I got to watch her grind and
2:34
get after it and I remember her
2:37
putting the laundry detergent on the washing machine saying
2:39
you're in seventh grade now brother You're making our
2:41
sixth grade. You're doing your own laundry because I
2:43
don't have time and I was like, oh, this
2:45
is so unfair Yeah, right. It was amazing that
2:47
she she she put that on me at that
2:50
age. I had to learn how it all works
2:53
and So you you were putting you
2:55
were casting a judgment on yourself based
2:57
on a number and I
2:59
hate that about our culture that we answer The question what
3:01
are you worth with a number? It
3:04
should never be cast that that's a terrible
3:06
metric for the question. What are you worth? But
3:09
what you're giving your family right now is a
3:12
dad at 35 the light came on You
3:15
now have a new past it's gonna be different than the
3:17
one you grew up with and they're gonna watch their old
3:19
man Scratch and claw and
3:21
you are going to take them to a new
3:23
level both financially because you're gonna do that You
3:25
already don't owe any money man, so that you're
3:28
on a path But more than that they're gonna
3:30
be able to go to college are gonna go
3:32
out of school They're gonna go work because they
3:34
have a picture of what that looks like and
3:36
that was dead when he said no more I'm
3:38
changing everything You are
3:40
changing your family legacy Over
3:43
and beyond a dollar amount. Do you hear what I'm
3:46
saying? Yeah,
3:48
does your family have it better now than you
3:50
had it growing up? I
3:56
guess I could say yeah. Yes, they do. I don't
3:58
know in what category that could be And
4:00
so unless someone else used those words against
4:02
you, I think we need to
4:04
drop that and go what is next for me? Do
4:08
you think you're a failure just because you don't have a house? You
4:10
have not purchased a home? You all are renting? Are
4:17
you not where you want to be with your career? Are
4:19
there other factors at play here? Or
4:22
is this really just about home ownership and you
4:24
saw that as a status symbol to
4:27
own a home at a young age? It's
4:29
mostly just home status symbol and there's a
4:32
lot of voices that happen. Yeah,
4:35
get off Instagram, brothers. You're doing real good, man. What do
4:37
you do for a living? I'm
4:39
in software
4:41
engineering. What do you
4:43
make? 90K. How
4:47
many kids you got? Three.
4:50
Okay. And is your wife working outside the
4:52
home? She's not
4:54
where my home's going. Okay, cool.
4:56
So what is your next financial goal? Do
4:58
you guys have the emergency fund fully funded?
5:02
Emergency fund is fully funded. Next
5:04
goal is to just
5:07
put at least 20% of
5:09
our take home into a savings
5:11
so we can just save up for a 20% down payment. I
5:14
love it. And you guys are both on
5:16
board with the timeline for that? More
5:22
so her than me. I'm more on the mind of
5:24
I would like this in a couple years, but it's
5:26
going to take at least five. So
5:28
five years to save up a down payment to do this the
5:31
right way with peace? Yeah.
5:34
I think you can do it faster than that. That's
5:37
considering you're not going to make any more
5:39
money over the next five years, which I
5:41
think in software engineering would be an insane
5:43
assumption. Yeah,
5:46
I just got a raise, and so I'm hoping that it will
5:48
go up further down the future. And you also – And
5:51
you also – And you also – software engineer, can you not do stuff
5:53
on Saturdays and Sundays? That's going to take time from your family. It's true.
5:55
But if it gives you three years of your
5:57
life back and gets you in the home that you want, it's
5:59
going to give you some payback. That's worth every penny of it.
6:03
That's a good point. I could look up some
6:06
things. You also live in a very high cost of
6:08
living area, right? Yeah.
6:10
Do you guys have roots there or are you
6:12
open to moving so you can have this homeownership
6:14
dream sooner? Well,
6:19
that's still in discussions with what we're – what
6:22
me and my wife are wanting
6:24
to figure out. Okay. Am I crazy? Is
6:26
there something else besides just owning a home?
6:28
I hear
6:31
in your voice a defeated guy. I
6:35
don't know. That's a good question.
6:40
I'm confused because you're debt free with an
6:42
emergency fund. You have a down payment goal.
6:45
You have this amazing family. You live in
6:47
a great area, and it feels like you're
6:49
– like I haven't made it. Well,
6:52
we're living in a pretty
6:55
tiny spot. We're in a condo, and
6:57
we're kind of squished enough as it
6:59
is. And I've been frustrated
7:01
for a while in terms of where we're living
7:04
and just wanting – I just want
7:06
something better for the kids. I want a house
7:08
so they can roam around the backyard and play
7:11
and – Can you go rent a place? It's
7:16
not – it's
7:18
a little pricey for the
7:20
renting. I wouldn't be able to do more
7:22
than – or I wouldn't make
7:24
the 25% in terms of how
7:27
much I should be spending on my home. Well,
7:29
maybe you move. I mean, software engineering, there's a lot
7:31
of remote positions. Maybe you move, and are you working
7:33
where you have to commute in every day? I
7:38
work from home, so I could – So she
7:40
homeschools, you work from home. It sounds like a
7:42
pretty flexible scenario. Let me say
7:44
this, dude. You are Project
7:46
X. George and I are hearing this all over
7:48
the country of people
7:50
who have good jobs, have
7:52
– are living the life they
7:54
want to live except that the town they live in,
7:57
the city they live in, has suddenly gotten – It's
8:00
so expensive they can't live there and
8:03
like millions and millions and millions of
8:05
people before all of us. We
8:08
have to make a decision are we gonna stay here and
8:12
contract our dreams to which gonna live
8:14
in a condo. Are
8:16
we gonna change zip codes we don't
8:19
want to but this is reality so
8:21
that we can have the life that we want and
8:24
i think that's where you are. Because
8:28
it sounds like you're living in Salt Lake City for
8:30
some sort of it's
8:33
just this i don't wanna say fantasy but it's like we live
8:35
in the city and it's like yeah but the city is costing
8:37
you your soul man i can hear it on the phone. Just
8:41
doesn't sound like it's worth it. Are
8:44
the kids actively talking to you saying dad
8:46
we're miserable we want a yard? No,
8:49
no, they're actually pretty happy. Yeah, they
8:51
just want that they just want to
8:53
hang out and they'll play with a
8:55
cardboard box and so i would i
8:58
think there's this has more to do with you than anything else
9:00
in the picture. Do me a favor brother
9:02
hang on the line i'm gonna give you three free
9:04
months with my friends that
9:06
better help i want you to talk to somebody
9:08
because i'm convinced there's something beneath all of this.
9:11
That is you're just not happy
9:13
i want you to be alive in this amazing life you
9:15
got and it all feels kind of heavy and dark i
9:18
want you to talk to somebody so hang on the line
