"The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein is a book that explores how free-market capitalism and neoliberalism have been spread around the world through the use of "shock" tactics. In part one of the book, Klein describes how the idea of neoliberalism was born at the University of Chicago in the 1940s under the guidance of economist Milton Friedman.

Klein argues that the Chicago School of Economics, led by Friedman, was heavily influenced by the Great Depression and saw it as an opportunity to push for a new economic system that would limit the role of government intervention in the economy. The Chicago School believed that economic freedom was essential to political freedom, and that markets should be allowed to function without interference.

In this episode we explore the dangers of government torture and how its tendrils extend far from our own country.
