The Rest is History sat in my podcast app for a while, waiting to be listened to, but for some reason the moment took a while to come (partly due to binging on We Have Ways of Making You Talk by Tom Holland’s brother, James). But when that moment did come I couldn’t stop myself and soon consumed over 400 episodes. 400!I’ve written several reviews stating how much I enjoy podcasts hosted by experts, real historians and this is another such show. Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook are fantastic, both knowledgeable, enthusiastic and also funny – never takes themselves too seriously and they have a brilliant interplay and relationship (and let’s not forget the impressions!).Between them they cover the scope of human history, from ancient Greece to the modern day and everything in between. I’ve not read or listened to much on recent history, seeing it as somehow less glamorous, but The Rest is History is teaching me I was wrong in that view. There’s also plenty to keep me happy in my usual areas of interest. It’s not only the hosts’ deep understanding that you get to enjoy, they have fantastic guests and all have been knowledgeable and entertaining. If you like history you’ll love The Rest is History - I do!Just don’t follow Tom’s recommendations about must see historical sites when on holiday!
