Hey everyone, hope you've had a nice
0:02
Christmas. There's just a
0:04
few days left of 2023
0:07
now, time for many of us to
0:09
reflect on the New Year's resolutions
0:12
we considered 52 weeks
0:14
ago and wonder if we need to make the same
0:16
ones again. New
0:18
Year's resolutions can be a great metaphorical
0:21
motivational line in the sand for
0:23
some people, but do remember
0:26
it is a metaphorical line.
0:28
There was no starting block and there isn't
0:31
a real deadline to it. Now,
0:33
if knowing that the end of the year is here gives
0:36
you some motivational push to make 2024
0:39
more successful in some regard than 2023
0:42
and help you, then obviously that's
0:44
brilliant. But if the size of
0:46
the thing you wanted to achieve when
0:48
you set the resolution in January still
0:51
paralyzes you now, because it's too
0:53
overwhelming, but that's not
0:55
so brilliant. And it would be a good idea
0:58
to maybe change the goalposts for
1:00
2024 and
1:02
find a better perspective on it. Because
1:05
maybe the books you said you were going
1:07
to read, the friends you were
1:09
going to reconnect with, or the
1:11
health or lifestyle changes you said at
1:13
the start of the year were going to happen
1:15
by the end. Maybe
1:17
they don't have to be completed all in
1:19
a year, after all. Maybe you
1:21
just said that because
1:24
it's some socially constructed nonsense.
1:28
Well, if it was you that
1:30
set the goalposts, then
1:33
it's up to you to be able to move the goalposts.
1:36
The thing about these self imposed
1:38
things, though, is that being in control
1:41
also means that we're ultimately responsible
1:44
for whether we achieve them or not, and that's something
1:47
that needs looking at. That's where
1:49
there might be a perspective shift needed.
1:52
An acceptance that goals
1:54
need to change, but
1:56
that our intentions were good in the first place.
1:58
That we're not a useless piece of crap for
2:01
moving the goalposts. We're just being realistic,
2:04
given that it's pretty much January again,
2:06
and last year's resolutions fell away. So
2:08
whatever we did last year that led to
2:10
us not achieving our goal was
2:13
wrong. Maybe we
2:15
set that bar too high, so bring
2:17
it down a bit, or a lot.
2:20
What can so often happen is that the frustration
2:23
of having not achieved something yet stops
2:25
us from getting motivated to get started
2:28
on it. And if that's the case for you,
2:30
no matter what your goals were, changing
2:33
job, learning something new,
2:35
rekindling something old, whatever it is,
2:38
if you want to get started now,
2:40
you need to let go of the shame of having
2:43
not achieved it in the first place, so as
2:45
to feel some excitement for it again.
2:47
Because there was excitement
2:49
about it when you first set that goal.
2:52
So you're capable of feeling it. Well,
2:55
see if you can get that feeling back.
2:57
Go back in your mind to the
2:59
reasons why you set that
3:01
goal. Right at the start of it you thought
3:03
about some sort of difference
3:06
that achieving it would make to your life.
3:08
Something pleasurable, something valuable,
3:11
something that would make it worthwhile. Well,
3:14
think about the difference
3:16
in your life, because that is
3:18
your motivation. Whatever gains
3:21
in your life that that goal would create,
3:23
that's your motivation and it still
3:25
can be a year later. So think
3:27
about it. What would that end
3:29
goal bring you? Even if it's
3:32
just a relief that it brings you,
3:34
think about that and
3:36
then think about the steps
3:38
you need to take. Not just the end
3:40
goal, but that first step
3:42
to making that end goal happen. So
3:45
if you want to change your job, which doesn't
3:47
happen by itself, does it? There are steps
3:50
in place. But you need the
3:52
motivation to take that first step.
3:54
Or rather, it's the first step that
3:57
then creates The motivation,
3:59
the movement, the feeling of being motivated
4:01
doesn't come without desire though,
4:04
a need. And that doesn't
4:06
come without something positive in the end
4:08
result. So think about that,
4:10
and even if step one of a dozen
4:13
steps takes a month, well
4:15
so be it. Let it take a whole year if it has
4:17
to, or two, or ten. The
4:19
end goal can stay the same. And
4:22
your focusing on the next step
4:24
can change every month or
4:26
two if it has to. If you do
4:28
that, then the motivation doesn't dip
4:31
and your self esteem can rise. Right
4:33
then, I need to record January's episode
4:36
now, ready for Monday. And it'll follow on from
4:38
this quite nicely because it's going to be about
4:40
self sabotage. Have a great weekend,
4:42
everybody, and I will speak to you soon.
4:45
Love ya, bye!
