The Season with Peter Schrager is a production

0:09

of the NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.

0:23

What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to the

0:25

super Bowl edition of

0:28

the Season with Peter Schrager.

0:30

If I sound like I'm in an

0:32

NPR booth where

0:34

I'm like doing the Alec Baldwin shwitty

0:37

balls voice, it's because I'm

0:39

not at the Super Bowl. I'm in Brooklyn,

0:41

New York. I'm in my home office.

0:43

Gotta say, not upset about

0:45

it? Fine doing this

0:47

in controlled setting. And there was a decision

0:50

made that the Season with Peter Schrager

0:52

and Good Morning Football would not be sent to Vegas

0:54

this year. I was upset. We're

0:57

okay with it. We've had two really good

0:59

shows of Good Morning Football the last couple of

1:01

days, and I'm excited that we

1:03

have a podcast still today.

1:05

I am joined by

1:09

mister Las Vegas. I would

1:11

say it goes in the order of this Sinatra,

1:16

Sammy Davis Junior, and

1:18

you know in recent years maybe Doyle Brunson and

1:21

Carrot Top and then somewhere in that like list

1:23

between like five and ten is Aaron Wang

1:25

Kaufman. So you're trying to wrap your head

1:27

around this yes, the producer of

1:29

the podcast, Aaron is in Vegas

1:32

doing podcasts for I guess other

1:34

people. Eric, you're explain it. I don't know. I feel like

1:36

there's a big giant game of spinning the bottle and

1:38

everyone was invited but me, I've gotten

1:41

over it and I'm fine. But like, you're in Vegas.

1:43

What's it like, dude, Well, I mean,

1:46

gosh, I'm honored to just be on a list

1:48

with Carrot Top.

1:50

You know, I don't.

1:51

I don't.

1:51

I don't know too much of the man's work. But yeah,

1:55

not. I'm being earnest when I say this. I like

1:57

Carrott. Have you seen have you seen

2:00

his act? And like he does He's done interviews recently

2:02

with Bill Maher and maybe

2:04

Mark Marin, and like he's already

2:06

self aware. He's also making I think twenty

2:09

million dollars a year from the luxor

2:11

wherever the hell he is. So I'm not hating on the Carrot Top.

2:13

I think he's a Vegas mixture. Good for him.

2:15

I also like the last I remember was

2:17

all the news that he got, like he started working

2:20

out real hard and he got jacked.

2:22

Yeah, it's huge Florida guy.

2:24

I want to say from Florida.

2:26

Yeah, yeah, No,

2:29

we have an iHeart Live

2:32

stage here and so I'm part of the crew

2:34

that's recording some shows and

2:36

setting up mics and taking down

2:38

mikes

2:40

and uh yeah,

2:43

Vegas is not a place that I

2:46

go on.

2:47

Make me feel better because I'm bummed.

2:49

I said, I don't care. I'm upset, but like it's crazy

2:51

that you know, or that I'm looking

2:54

at you and You've got the Veggas skyline behind you

2:56

and I'm here with my Brooklyn background with some corduroy

2:58

jeans on. I mean, you

3:01

know, if I wanted to.

3:03

Pay fifty dollars for breakfast and have a

3:05

bunch of people running to me as I'm walking around,

3:07

I would have just stayed in Manhattan.

3:09

There you go. You know, there's

3:12

I have some have you seen anyone? Have you seen anyone

3:14

cool?

3:14

NFL wise, Yeah,

3:17

I got to I set up you know, I was

3:19

like chatting with DeAndre

3:21

Swift. I chatted with Michael Pittman Junior for

3:23

a little bit yesterday were

3:25

shot white and

3:28

uh, you know, it's

3:31

cool to like meet some players and chat with them.

3:33

Yeah.

3:34

Two years ago, when the Super Bowl was in l A. I

3:37

got to very briefly talk to Josh

3:39

Allen, which was really cool.

3:40

That's awesome.

3:41

Yeah, it was like it was like some rotating thing

3:43

of like Josh Allen, Dak

3:45

and Herbert. I think, of course Josh was

3:47

the one I was most excited about. I saw Dean Dawkins

3:50

like from AFAR earlier, yes yes,

3:52

yesterday, yesterday, and

3:57

uh yeah, my dad was texting me. He's like, yeah, see if

3:59

you could see Josh Allen. I don't know if he's coming, try

4:01

dad.

4:02

Yeah, he actually heard recording

4:05

this Thursday morning. I heard from a friend and that

4:07

he is going to be there Thursday doing radio

4:09

row. So you will see him in a few hours.

4:12

Be sure to get that selfie. I've

4:15

been watching from AFART. It's kind of crazy. It's like there's

4:17

it's like I'm like holding a snow globe watching it because

4:19

I am watching all the coverage. It's been good.

4:22

ESPN's went all out. They've got some

4:24

good stuff going on, and I saw McAfee was there.

4:27

I don't have a winner though, the first few days

4:29

of this thing, media wise, like nothing has broken

4:32

through. I thought a couple good

4:34

interviews were done with Steve Young, ironically,

4:36

who's no longer with ESPN, but I saw Kevin

4:39

Clark did a really good Steve Young interview with him,

4:41

and I think Chris Sims and Florio

4:44

had on Rock Bowers

4:46

the tight End from Georgia, which is such a random

4:48

guest, but like, I like seeing these kids before they're

4:50

put into the NFL machine, and I thought

4:52

that was an interesting interview. But it's the

4:55

typical, you know, an NFL

4:57

car wash deal where there's ten

4:59

things to do and you're gonna see DeAndre

5:01

Swift promote whatever Detergent or

5:04

you know, causer or

5:06

whatever it is with Jim Rome, and

5:08

then he'll go on to local radio. Then

5:10

he'll do something with Ross Tucker and they'll go through

5:12

the list and that's radio

5:14

row. I think the the interesting

5:16

part for me always was in the hotel

5:19

lobbies and in the hallways

5:21

and then they come of the some of the events and you

5:23

know, that's that's that's a shame that I'm not gonna

5:26

be able to do that this year. But I would

5:28

like to think, uh that everything

5:31

stays copasetic and we can get to kick off

5:33

and there's no negative certainly headlines.

5:35

That's my hope. Vegas scares me, Uh,

5:37

not that I would get in trouble or that anyone that that we

5:39

deal with would get in trouble, but like when you put

5:41

all of those people there, it does

5:44

feel like there's a potential for something

5:46

and you know, thank God, knock on wood, we're

5:48

doing this. On Thursday, there was a story of

5:50

a guy who tried to climb the sphere. That's that's

5:53

that's the uh, that's the extent of the troublemakers

5:55

I've seen.

5:56

Yeah, that's that's the only thing I've heard about. I

5:58

mean, like, traffic is really bad. It's

6:01

like you can't get out.

6:02

You can't walk because it's so far, so you

6:04

take an uber. What do you do?

6:05

Yeah?

6:05

We didlast night some some coworkers

6:08

from my heart and I went to dinner and

6:10

where'd you go?

6:11

We went?

6:12

What's that place called that fancy?

6:14

I don't know about that.

6:15

It was like there's an incredible either

6:18

high or Chinese place, Lotus of some

6:20

Lotus of Siam. Maybe it's like something up.

6:23

Look it up Google that it supposed to be like the greatest restaurant

6:25

in the world.

6:27

Sam, Yeah, from Mingo Road.

6:29

I assume you did my place.

6:30

No, we went to a place called fine company, which

6:33

I had seen some good stuff online. It's outside

6:36

of the strip, which was nice. So we got like into

6:38

a quieter part of town. Very good

6:40

meal. They were super uh

6:44

amenable to like me calling and being

6:46

like, hey, we're sitting in traffic. We'll be fifteen minutes

6:49

late. Hey you're really twenty minutes late.

6:51

Yeah, So it was like, you know, thirty

6:53

minutes like sitting doing nothing in the car West

6:56

Coast super Bowl.

6:58

I imagine Niners fans will have an

7:00

easier trip to get there. Have you noticed even

7:03

like that that kind of thing where like there's more

7:05

Niners or Chiefs fans. It's like in the city the week.

7:07

Of so from what I've seen walking

7:09

around by Radio Row, a lot of Niners

7:11

fans this morning at breakfast,

7:14

a couple, you know, like dads and their kids,

7:16

like some families all in Niners gear. Have

7:19

seen some big groups of Ksey fans,

7:22

but they're like it's a group of them,

7:24

and there's lots of like just one off Niners

7:26

fans or two people. Have seen

7:29

some surprising amount

7:31

of Raiders jerseys and stuff. Yeah

7:33

it's Vegas, I mean yeah, but yeah,

7:36

but so far it seems like more forty nine

7:39

Ers fans.

7:40

Before we get to our guest. I set a little piece

7:42

on this on Good Morning Football Thursday morning, and I

7:44

want to share it with the listeners because

7:46

I think it's both eerie and also

7:49

beautiful in a lot of ways. I

7:52

was no joke. I was going

7:54

through this. I'm so pathetic sometimes

7:56

when I was going through some uh some

7:59

old football trading cards that

8:01

I have, I'm not kidding and going through

8:03

them with my son and Derek

8:06

Thomas card like an old upper deck. Nineteen

8:08

ninety one, Derek Thomas card came up

8:11

and I'm looking at it and I'm explaining who Derek

8:13

Thomas was. I'm saying, this was, you

8:15

know, it was Lawrence Taylor in the eighties, and

8:17

then it was going to be Derek Thomas

8:20

in the nineties. He wore number fifty eight. He

8:23

was a top five pick of the Chiefs. He

8:25

was a studd at Alabama, and he hit

8:28

the league like an absolute

8:30

tornado. He had twenty sacks in

8:32

his second season in the league in nineteen

8:34

ninety when back then it

8:37

was a lot more run game in the trenches.

8:39

It was much harder to compile sacks

8:42

back then, and you know, Gastino had

8:44

the record, but Derek Thomas came really close. He

8:46

would go on to be a multi time

8:49

All Pro, a first ballot Hall of

8:51

Famer, the whole deal. Derek

8:53

Thomas tragically passed away on

8:55

February eighth, two

8:58

thousand, which, as we're recording, this

9:00

is twenty four years to the day.

9:02

Wow.

9:03

Now here's the eerie part. I'm

9:05

looking at this car and I'm like, oh my god, it's been twenty

9:07

four years since we lost Eric Tomas. I remember exactly

9:09

where I was. I was in college. I remember it hit me like

9:11

a ton of bricks because I love the guy. Derek

9:15

Thomas were number fifty eight. Aaron,

9:17

what Super Bowl is this? Fifty

9:20

eight? Fifty

9:23

eight for fifty eight And I said this

9:26

on air today on Good Morning Football,

9:28

and I said it probably a couple of hours ago. And got

9:30

like a thousand favorites or retweets

9:33

whatever early on it or I just chocked my phone.

9:35

It's got like one hundred k. Like the Chiefs fans

9:37

are rallying around this thing. And I

9:40

said on the show, the

9:42

tragedy is the death obviously of one of

9:44

the greatest players of all time, but

9:46

the second layer of it is he

9:49

was such a chief, mister Chief all those

9:51

years with the Chiefs. I think he played thirteen

9:53

years with Kansas City. The shame

9:55

of it is that he didn't even get to

9:58

see this era of dominance. So he was on

10:00

all those Martiney Schottenheimer teams in the nineties

10:02

when Lynn Elliott's missing field goals or

10:05

when they're making a run, and then

10:07

the Broncos would come in with Lway and somehow

10:09

beat them in a big spot. Like they did not

10:11

win playoff games back then. They didn't. They

10:13

simply didn't. Nick Lowry was the kicker.

10:16

I want to say, you know, Marino

10:18

got him one time. And just year after

10:20

year after year with Derek Thomas and Neil Smith

10:22

and Deron Cherry and Albert Lewis and those great

10:25

great Chiefs teams, they always

10:27

fell short and they almost got this reputation

10:29

of like a team that couldn't win the big one.

10:31

Then you go into the most recent era before

10:34

this one, and it was Alex Smith and it

10:36

was here we got this home playoff game, and we somehow

10:38

lose to the Titans, somehow lose to the Steelers,

10:40

somehow lose to the Patriots,

10:43

and it was year after year after year of gosh,

10:46

so good in the regular season, we just can't win the

10:48

big one. And now as we look towards

10:50

the Super Bowl, this is not

10:52

only the greatest team in the sport,

10:55

it's the greatest team of their generation. And

10:57

they're about to win their third Super Bowl. If they

10:59

put this this game to bed, and

11:02

it's you know, three super Bowl wins

11:04

in five years, it's forced

11:06

there were Bowl appearances in five

11:08

years, Mahomes would improve to fifteen

11:10

and three in the postseason. And

11:13

I did a whole thing on Good Morning Football today.

11:15

I was like, gosh,

11:17

like it's it's

11:19

such a shame that like Derek Thomas couldn't

11:22

be a part of this and couldn't see this and

11:24

couldn't be honored and couldn't be fifty

11:26

eight for fifty eight. I get choked up on it.

11:28

I know I'm a football historian and I love

11:30

this stuff, but it almost

11:32

seemed eerie with the way that those things aligned.

11:34

And I've got a good friend, Connor,

11:37

who's a diehard Chiefs fan, and we were texting about

11:39

Derek Thomas last night and he's like, hell,

11:41

I'm wearing he's going to the Super Bowl. He's like, I'm wearing the fifty

11:43

eight. I'm wearing Derek Thomas, and I wouldn't be

11:45

shocked if Sunday, if a lot

11:48

of Chiefs fans in attendance are rocking that fifty

11:50

eight.

11:50

He seems like, just from you telling the story,

11:52

the kind of guy who they didn't bring him out

11:55

as the honor a captain all he'd be on

11:57

field, you know, like they'd break

11:59

him out in a good way, like not

12:01

in a in a you know, a

12:04

negative way whatsoever.

12:06

But yeah, I would say this, there

12:08

is a story to be told. I feel

12:10

like we've told every story in the NFL. We've done

12:12

every documentary. There's a ten part series coming

12:15

out on Apple about the Patriots.

12:17

We've had, you know, the Jerry Jones

12:19

piece is being done by the guys at sky Dance.

12:21

Like there's all these different documentaries that we have

12:23

already. The

12:26

nineteen eighty nine NFL draft

12:29

was Aikman at one. Okay,

12:31

Tony Manderich, the Incredible Bulk

12:34

is what his nickname was, was two.

12:37

The third pick in that draft was Barry

12:39

Sanders going to the Detroit Lions. Derek

12:42

Thomas went number four, and

12:44

Dion Sanders went number five.

12:46

If you want to talk about a book to be written

12:48

or another documentary that hasn't been done,

12:51

give me the nineteen eighty nine draft and the

12:53

stories of what Aikman became, what

12:55

Tony Manderrich became, eventually having a

12:58

cover of Sports Illustrated titled The Incredible

13:00

Bust. Barry Sanders

13:03

retiring early, what could have been the greatest running

13:05

back to ever played the game, Derek who tragically

13:07

passes away at the age of thirty three, and

13:09

then Dion Sanders, who was arguably

13:11

the greatest defensive back of all time and

13:13

maybe the biggest pop culture icon of

13:15

his era. Guys,

13:18

we can do all this from Brooklyn. I can do it all. We can

13:20

still talk about the Super Bowl. It's happening,

13:22

and another guy who has a

13:24

connection to this game is going to be our guest. I'm

13:27

so excited to have him because we've been friendly

13:30

for several years and we have beat around the

13:32

bush about whether we're going to do this pod or not

13:34

and when we're going to do it, and we're going to

13:36

get to his connection to not only the forty nine Ers, but

13:38

also to the Miami Dolphins and

13:40

Denver Broncos. The

13:43

comedian and incredible, incredible

13:46

podcaster and personality, mister

13:48

Dan Soder joins us after this. For

14:02

my money, he's the best stand

14:04

up comedian alive. Loved

14:06

watching his specials. I love him

14:08

on podcasts. I think he's the best podcast guest.

14:10

Also, I don't even agree with that.

14:12

Now he's got his own Now he's got his own

14:14

podcast himself called Soder.

14:17

Just one name, just Soder. He

14:20

is hilarious. You know him from

14:22

his stand up from Billions and from

14:24

just about every social media or

14:27

comedian podcast there is. Dan Soder.

14:29

Welcome to the season with Peter Shaker super Bowl

14:32

Audition.

14:33

Yeah, dude, thanks for having me. Thanks for we finally

14:35

made this work.

14:36

I know you've got a Niners hat on. Now

14:39

this is We're gonna go down memory lane with

14:41

you. The reason I wanted you on this week is that I

14:43

think, as far as like fans

14:46

of the forty nine ers that I know, I don't know

14:48

if there's anyone more hardcore

14:51

that I follow from Afar or that I know in

14:53

my own personal life that I personally know than

14:56

you with your Niners. But

14:58

you're from Colorado, So where

15:00

did the Niners deal?

15:01

Come from well. I think

15:03

I think the best way to phrase my

15:05

Niner fai them is that I'm not the

15:07

most hardcore forty

15:10

nine ers fan. I think there's a lot of people

15:12

in comedy, maybe Okay

15:14

may Al Madile. Al Madirable would

15:16

be the only person that I would put above me as far

15:18

as because he's a generational season

15:21

ticket holder, He's he's the man.

15:23

He got me involved with the Niners when

15:25

we did this like sketch thing in twenty fourteen.

15:28

He absolutely is the most hardcore

15:30

forty nine ers fan.

15:31

I would say, it's funny I used to host

15:33

that. I used to m see this event. The state of the franchise

15:36

for the forty nine ers before they were like at

15:38

this levels is like five years ago. Rdding, John

15:40

and Kyle just out there and al would do

15:42

comedy every year and like Alice the most

15:44

plug like Alice Hugen if you don't know all things comedy,

15:46

him and Bill Bird they launched this whole thing, and like Al's

15:48

an amazing standard.

15:49

That's amazing. That was one of my favorite

15:51

human beings. I would say

15:54

I am the most emotionally

15:56

triggered forty nine Ers fan

15:58

in comedy. I would say I'm the one

16:01

that wears his heart on the sleeve the

16:03

most in comedy as

16:05

far as forty nine Ers fans go. Yeah,

16:08

I grew up in Colorado,

16:11

but I was born I was born in Connecticut. My

16:13

parents are both from California.

16:15

My mom grew up in Fresno. My dad is

16:18

from the Bay and my dad is a huge

16:20

My dad was a huge fort Niners man. It wasn't even

16:22

like a question of

16:24

who I was going to like when I was born. I was put

16:27

into a forty nine Ers onesie. I was born

16:29

in nineteen eighty three, right at the beginning

16:31

of the dynasty. You know, they had only

16:33

won in eighty one, so I only missed

16:35

one. And I was one years old

16:37

when they beat a rookie Dan Marino, and

16:40

in nineteen eighty four, and I

16:42

just grew up. I grew up

16:45

sports wealthy, That's what I like to say.

16:47

I grew up very NFL wealthy.

16:49

When you grow up a forty Niners fan in the eighties

16:51

and nineties, you want

16:54

for nothing except more rings. The

16:56

question was always who are we going to play into the

16:58

Super Bowl? And who

17:00

might stop us in the NFC Championship game.

17:03

That was always the question, because

17:05

that's.

17:05

That's the way to Artilou kind of ran that you like if

17:08

you're not if you're not familiar, Like in the eighties

17:10

and nineties, like teams would still take commercial

17:12

flights, yet Eddie the Bartelow would

17:14

have a private jet. They would take the players to

17:16

Hawaii after the season, all expenses

17:18

paid. It was like northern California.

17:21

I think about it from being a Giants fan, I'm like

17:23

Parcels and Belichick and like this pretty

17:25

team with LT and then here are the Niners with

17:28

their beautiful sun setting over Candlestick,

17:30

just tend and out beating the beating the

17:33

La Rams you know out of Anaheim, and

17:35

the terrible the Cardinals teams

17:37

and all that stuff.

17:38

No, no, no, we played. You got to remember the old FC.

17:40

With the NFC East. You're right, so let's go through it. NFC

17:43

West was Rams, Saints and Falcons.

17:46

Is that what? Yes?

17:47

And then later on Carolina Panthers

17:49

when when they went to the Panthers were at when they

17:51

got brought in. We basically were the NFC South thinking

17:54

about Austin the Rams, that's what it

17:56

was. But my dad, my

17:58

dad made me a Niners fan and it just

18:01

was like everything. It was like uh,

18:04

And we moved to Colorado and then I

18:06

go to school and all these people are like, no, the Broncos,

18:08

and You're like forty nine ers, dude, always

18:10

forty nine ers. So and it became kind

18:13

of like a part of my personality where I

18:15

was like no, no, no, If I like what I like, it's how I

18:17

can defend loving professional wrestling. Yeah,

18:19

how I defended loving stand up comedy.

18:21

Action figures, action figures.

18:23

Because I'm telling you right now, stand up comedy

18:25

now is like seen as being acceptable

18:28

on a like basically

18:31

generic way.

18:32

Totally.

18:33

Back in the day, people were like, what you like night club?

18:35

Do you tell someone you're a stand up comedian? I think they would

18:38

probably think you're a leper.

18:39

Yeah, exactly. But when I was little, when I was like young,

18:41

when I was like eleven and twelve, I

18:43

was like super into stand up and people were like

18:45

that's weird, like you should be into like, you.

18:48

Know, your guys like the amazing Jonathan, Like who

18:50

are you watching as a kid.

18:51

And when I was a kid, I was really into Dana

18:54

Carvey's nineteen ninety five special

18:56

Critics Choice. My dad also did this

18:58

thing where like people from the Bay are

19:00

very proud about who else is also from the

19:02

Bay. Yes, data, I mean this is

19:04

what everybody does.

19:05

Robin will you stand a Carvey exactly

19:08

San Francisco scenes.

19:10

Uh, well, you also had Ellen DeGeneres,

19:12

yeah, Keaven and Spacey.

19:15

I mean not Kivin Spacey, that's Kevin

19:17

Pollack Ven Kevin

19:20

Pollack. But it was like anybody from the Bay. My dad

19:22

would be like, oh, he's from the Bay. Oh he's he's

19:24

from Marin like he knew where everyone was from.

19:26

Yeah. But uh but I loved I

19:28

loved Robin Williams and Dana Carvey were

19:30

very special, be and Rodney Dangerfield and

19:33

of course Eddie Murphy and then later on Chappelle

19:36

that was my guy.

19:38

Yeah.

19:38

Chapelle was like, do you remember how

19:40

older you were you were when you found your

19:43

band, like not a band

19:45

that was like, like,

19:47

I remember the first

19:49

time I saw Chappelle, I was like, oh, this is just my

19:51

favorite comedian. This is just my guy.

19:53

Like and I think for bands, knowing you Queens

19:55

of the Stone Age is probably like your band.

19:57

Right, yeah, yeah, you got you for

19:59

me.

19:59

It's it's kind of a pop but you might roll your eyes. But

20:02

like I love the Killers,

20:04

do you think the Killers in Vegas?

20:06

I'm out of Vegas.

20:07

Just I've seen him fifty times. I know there are Mormon guys

20:09

out of Vegas and they've and they've been around, and

20:11

we know mister Brightside. But like I've

20:14

seen I have seen the Killers fifty

20:16

times in person, absolutely love them,

20:18

and I don't care on a bashly that's my bad.

20:20

Yeah, I think there's something to be said about like

20:23

repping what you love and standing

20:26

ten toes down for it, you become

20:28

like a bigger fan of it. It's why I love wrestling

20:31

as much as I do. It's why I love comedy as much as

20:33

I do. It's why I love the Niners as much

20:35

as I do, because there's this feeling

20:37

of like, no, I live in die

20:39

with this, So when it does go

20:42

well, it means the world, and when it

20:44

does go bad, it means I'm

20:46

in hell last last

20:48

time, last year. At this point, there's

20:50

a zero chance I would have jumped on a podcast with

20:53

you because I was miserable. I was

20:55

miserable. I was miserable. Rock

20:57

Kerry's elbow was busted. The Niners had lost

20:59

to the to the Eagles in the NFC Championship

21:01

Game. All hope was lost. I was

21:04

just a I was a puddle of tears.

21:06

And consolable, all right. So early

21:09

nineties is when you really pick it up, and that's the Ricky Waters,

21:11

Steve Young.

21:13

I mean, the early eighties was really like that

21:15

was the magical time. Montana, Rice,

21:17

Roger, Craig, Tom Rathman. You

21:20

had like, you know, my favorite player

21:22

of all time, Ronnie Lott Lot, you know. But

21:25

then on the defense you had guys like Bill Romanowski,

21:27

Dana Stubblefield, Brant Young,

21:30

and with Bride Young.

21:31

On Friday, I did an event where I MC this thing

21:33

for the Senior Bowl, and I tell you how cool

21:35

it was at this event and

21:38

seeing it there was sixteen different NFL

21:40

legends Hall of Famers, and in a little circle,

21:42

I was in a conversation with Brant

21:44

Young. Patrick Willis,

21:47

the man who was.

21:49

Match Humble Quiet get

21:52

into the Hall of Fame this year.

21:55

Covinced he will from talking to all the voters.

21:57

You know, as we're recording this, they're going to be able tonight.

22:00

And I haven't gotten any tips, but like I've been posting on

22:02

social media, about it like if taken on a life of its

22:04

own, Like he was the best of his generations.

22:06

I mean him and Navarro Bowman were.

22:09

Like together by those two

22:11

and Luke Keikley best linebackers of their generation.

22:13

Said Luke Keikley was unbelievable. So it's

22:15

unbelievable. So there, yeah, man.

22:18

And the third guy was t O, who obviously

22:20

you've heard horror stories of, like t

22:22

is a t O was amazing in this in this event

22:25

that I was at for the Senior Ball, and I'm talking to

22:27

right Young nineteen ninety three, Notre

22:30

Dame, like this high like you know, proceipit comes

22:32

in just an amazing NFL career, maybe the most

22:34

underrated defensive linement of his time.

22:36

He was incredible. What I loved about Brian Young is

22:38

we had Brian Young and then we had Junior Bryant.

22:40

We had like two guys with Brian both

22:43

ad tackle. So they loved

22:45

Brian Young. And I mean Patrick Willis.

22:47

Yeah I get giddy talking about old old Niners

22:50

teams, but but Patrick Willis is, I

22:52

think he's in my top

22:54

five nin ers of guys I loved because

22:56

I think Patrick Willis just let me.

22:58

Guess some of the others because I feel like you're my

23:00

age, and like there's.

23:01

I'm already giving you two of the five.

23:03

So Ronnie Lott and Patrick Willis, I'm going to say

23:05

you were a huge Frank Gore fan.

23:07

Love Frank Gorber. Not my top five, top ten, absolutely.

23:10

Okay, I think you

23:12

probably knowing what you're

23:14

all about and all this stuff, you love big

23:17

Justin Smith, the cowboy on the defensive

23:19

line of our nineties.

23:20

Listen, he came in and immediately changed

23:22

stuff we had. Well, we had Smith

23:24

and Smith at the end. Then Super Bowl

23:26

forty seven we had Alden Smith and Justin Smith

23:29

just absolutely terrorizing quarterbacks.

23:31

Loved that d line, that Super Bowl

23:33

forty seven defense to this day.

23:36

You know, Vic Fangio a decordinator,

23:39

just calling all the shots. I'm Brooks

23:42

God, everybody on that team.

23:44

I love that team. I So that year

23:46

I was like with Foxsports dot Com

23:48

and Fox Sports Wanted, they were like, you're gonna follow

23:51

a team through the playoffs. We're going to give you the Niners.

23:54

So I was there every step of the way, and you.

23:56

Saw, you saw the other great NFC

23:58

championship come back and we were down seventeen

24:01

to the Falcons. Come on.

24:02

Unbelievable was in the building. It was unbelievable.

24:05

And then that was when no one could stop Colin

24:07

Kaepernick.

24:08

That was like that game against the Packers.

24:10

I was at that one in the playoffs. Who was

24:12

in Candlestick and Kaepernick and ran

24:15

for I think one hundred and ninety yards on Vic Fan on

24:17

Dom Capers's defense, just up and down

24:19

the field on a Saturday night. It was unbelievable.

24:21

He had the two sixty eight total. He had something

24:24

like insane. He had a crazy I

24:26

think like rushing yards he had.

24:27

Overtly, he single handedly put dom

24:29

Capers, who's considered one of the greatest defensive minds, like he

24:31

put him out the past year Like that was it. You can't coach

24:33

anymore after this, what Kaepernick did to him.

24:35

Yeah, all right, I'm trying to think of the other the final

24:38

three given to me.

24:39

One of them is very easy. Who

24:41

I named my golden retriever after

24:45

when I was ten years old, Montana Joe anton

24:47

Fair. I go crazy with Joe Antenna, and

24:50

then Jerry Rice obviously yep,

24:52

and then randomly,

24:55

but I guess, let me guess.

24:56

Let me guess

25:00

Brent Jones. Well

25:02

host, Okay, so we're back

25:04

worred about Bresta Jones is Randy

25:07

Cross, Dude, I'm

25:10

like, I'll give you.

25:10

Can I give you his college?

25:12

Yeah?

25:12

I hate the college because I grew up in Colorado a

25:14

Buffs fan. He went to.

25:15

Nebraska, Nebraska

25:18

a Nebraska forty niner.

25:20

Around that time. He was a little, I think

25:22

a little before Brent Jones. Okay,

25:25

they might have crossed over us offense. Offense,

25:29

not William barnon On Floyd. He was in Florida

25:32

State. Yeah, would just

25:34

he would always have turfiness in his face.

25:36

Mask bar down the middle, number

25:38

forty four.

25:40

Tommy Rathman, Oh yeah, the fullback,

25:43

come on the best.

25:44

Bob Rathman was the main I

25:46

met, uh so when

25:49

growing up in Colorado and obviously growing up

25:51

with Mike McDaniel is

25:53

my middle school best friend.

25:55

We're going to get into this in a second.

25:57

I love this. Go on. His stepdad

25:59

Gary worked for the Broncos, and

26:02

they no matter how much free

26:05

gear they threw at me, they knew they could never change

26:07

the fact that I was a forty nine er fan.

26:09

Here's an Ed McCaffrey Jersey, get it out of my face.

26:11

Oh I loved dude. I still got a box of Eddio's

26:13

somewhere in my house. I didn't Here's

26:15

the thing, I don't hate the Broncos. It

26:18

was like, I would cheer for the Broncos, but.

26:19

It was a different conference, not a threat.

26:21

But I could always I would always hit them with we

26:24

did one, Yeah, there

26:26

you go. I would always just go fifty five to ten.

26:28

Which was the year my parents got divorced

26:31

and my dad was a Niners fan of my mom was like, I got

26:33

to be a Broncos fan. I can't be a forty nine Ers fan.

26:35

Reminds me too much of Gary. And then just

26:38

be it out, just an absolutely blowout.

26:40

And then this past couple of years,

26:43

I don't think people understand the heartbreak it's been for

26:45

the Niners. So you guys are up, not

26:48

to get all sad here, but you're ten

26:50

points in the fourth quarter after the questionable

26:53

offensive pass interference on Kittle at the end of the

26:55

first half.

26:56

And I don't need to go on talk about

26:58

it. I don't even want to. I don't even want to. I

27:00

was there. I was in Miami at

27:03

the hard Rock by the way it let me hear the

27:05

whole deal. Well, that was because.

27:08

McDaniel was coaching for them. Then that's your best friend from

27:10

childhood.

27:11

Yeah, he was the run game coordinator the twenty

27:13

nineteen season, and

27:15

in October that of twenty nineteen

27:17

is when I started dating my current fiance.

27:20

One of the greatest human beings to ever walk a planet,

27:23

Katie Nolan. Mutual fans mutually

27:25

Katie Nolan. She just rules the admirer

27:28

love sen her almost wins Celebrity

27:30

Jeopardy recently. Amazing, very

27:33

proud of her. But she so

27:35

I went to every I

27:38

got to go to both the Divisional and the NFC

27:40

Championship game that year because

27:43

of McDaniel.

27:43

So we've run who who they played?

27:45

They beat the Packers. Packers

27:48

both both had us in Santa.

27:50

Claricep Yeah, both at Levis.

27:52

They they start just scored another touchdown on the Packers

27:54

for the records.

27:55

And I bet he'd be cool. I bet he'd be okay

27:57

with me telling this story. Okay, I would fly

27:59

in a day before the games just to

28:01

hang with McDaniel, and then McDaniel

28:04

would help me what they were going to

28:07

to the teams and then they would

28:09

do it. It was first fifteen plays.

28:11

Here's the script, dude, not even

28:13

that trigger. I'm telling you right now. McDaniel

28:15

would go like, we'd be sitting at his kitchen

28:18

table and he'd be like, Yeah, the Viking's

28:20

got a week four technique, so we're just gonna

28:22

bang on them all day. Just watch him bang

28:24

on them all day. And then they'd do that, and he'd be

28:26

like, and then we'll go all over the top. He would like to tell

28:28

me what they're gonna do. I remember specifically

28:30

the NFC Championship game against the Packers. McDaniel

28:33

went, Yeah, they spent a lot of money on

28:35

those edge rushers. Well, it's gonna be a real

28:38

it's gonna be a real problem for them if they have to stop the

28:40

run. So we're just gonna give it the moster and.

28:41

They pass attempts for Garoppolo that game.

28:44

I'm telling you, he hold it. And

28:46

what he told me and my friend Chad, who go to every

28:48

game, is he said death by a thousand

28:51

cuts. That's what he said through

28:53

a wall.

28:53

Here.

28:54

McDaniel goes, I'm gonna give him death by a

28:56

thousand cuts, and he did. Mostert went

28:58

for like two.

28:59

You have like two sixteen five touchdowns something

29:01

crazy.

29:02

It was not one of my favorite moments I've ever

29:04

seen as a human, and as a sports

29:06

fan was uh. I mean, it

29:08

was unbelievable. As a fan of the forty nine ers when

29:10

they won the NFC championship game, McDaniel's

29:13

wife, Katie McDaniel, got Chad

29:16

and I and she said, listen, there's

29:18

a chance I'm gonna be able to get you guys on the field.

29:20

And we're and I'm like for

29:22

the Niners when an NFC championship came down?

29:25

What at all?

29:26

So so we get down

29:28

there, so we like we walked through because you know, it's

29:30

like Katie's leading the pack and it's we're there with

29:33

his his mom, with McDaniel's mom and

29:35

his his his in laws,

29:37

and so we get on the field or whatever,

29:40

and I got to watch McDaniel

29:42

and Moster have this like in

29:45

depth conversation that looked

29:47

so important while I was watching

29:49

it, and it was just one of the coolest moments I've ever seen

29:51

in my life. And that's so cool.

29:53

And you know, he was on like

29:55

ten teams before he just hung

29:57

with them. And of course, but what's the let me hear the finish to it.

29:59

What was the I just asked McDaniel,

30:01

I said, like, what did you say to him? He said, I just told him,

30:03

you know, you deserve everything you get and

30:05

that you worked your ass off to get here and that this

30:08

is all this is all you, this is everything

30:10

you've worked for or whatever, and it was just a great moment. It was

30:12

just the moment where I was like, dude, this is so cool.

30:15

But yeah, and then so I

30:18

was, you know, Katie and I had

30:20

just started dating, and she was still at ESPN

30:22

and she was covering the Pro Bowl,

30:24

and then she had to go down to Miami for

30:27

the Super Bowl and she said like,

30:29

hey, there's a chance I can get you a ticket to this game.

30:32

And I was like, oh, I'll go down there

30:34

immediately. And she did you

30:37

know the Super Bowl parties, there's always like, yeah,

30:40

a weird party. I don't know what you guys do

30:42

at your illuminati parties, but there's something NFL

30:44

illuminati for sure where they hand

30:46

you tickets. So she immediately texted

30:48

me, She's like, I got his tickets and I

30:51

got it. I got a flight down there. And

30:54

what we didn't know was the

30:56

tickets were in the chief section, so

30:59

I, me and three other forty

31:01

nine Ers fans were the only fans in

31:03

this entire block

31:06

of the hard Rock Stadium

31:08

in Miami. Which now every

31:10

time I go to my point,

31:13

exactly where my sheet was, and I go like, I was

31:15

right there when the Niners lost. I was sitting right

31:17

there, and when he sat there and watched, and

31:20

when we were when I think Fred Warner

31:23

might have given Patrick Mahomes his

31:26

first interception of the postseason. See

31:28

you probably have to look that up, but Fred

31:30

Warner in that Super Bowl kicked

31:32

off Patrick Mahomes for the first time in his career

31:35

in the postseason.

31:36

It was and it gave. It

31:38

was in the red zone, and it was a

31:40

Niners up ten with eleven minutes

31:42

left to go.

31:43

Well, guess who stood up and yelled,

31:45

how the do you like that? Let's go

31:48

forty nine Ers. I mean, I was

31:50

like, I had my red Niners. What

31:52

you're doing?

31:52

I was like, well, Fred Warter,

31:55

Fred Ward.

31:56

And then and then they came

31:58

back. And I'm gonna tell you right now, when when

32:01

a team comes back and you're in their section,

32:04

you sure as hell feel that

32:06

you feel the best way I could say it is it

32:08

felt like I was being swallowed

32:10

in quicksand like they just kept

32:13

like the right. There was one guy, there

32:15

was one kid that just had these nets.

32:19

I killed Jersey.

32:20

He had Seltzer's. He was drinking hard Seltzers

32:23

and he was running up and down the stairs

32:25

and I was like watching him go from

32:27

being completely quiet to being

32:29

very loud and aggressive, and I was like, I

32:32

was just getting mad. And I always will

32:34

give Katie credit for this. When

32:36

the forty nine ers turned the ball over and we knew the

32:39

Chiefs are going to run out of the clock, which

32:41

they were. They were running out of the clock.

32:43

Frank Frank Clarke is that Garoppolo

32:45

just kind of coughs the ball and it's fourth.

32:47

Down and then they do the they get a joke

32:49

touchdown, They got one like kind.

32:51

Of Kelsey scores, and then Damian Williams

32:53

puts the game away.

32:54

Yeah. That when they put the game away,

32:57

we were going to the after party.

32:59

And I don't think everyone listening

33:01

at home knows there is a after party regardless

33:04

if you win or lose at the super Bowl.

33:06

So at the super Bowl, the owners have

33:08

to pay for the party. Before the game.

33:10

No matter what entertain there's

33:12

a rapper. It's everything. Well they're

33:14

just they will hold on to that because this is this

33:17

was wild. So Katie,

33:19

you know, she's a Pats fan, she's diehard Pats.

33:22

She's in like a jeans in a leather jacket.

33:24

She's just chilling and I'm like nine

33:27

or out that not a

33:29

gig, always always rapping.

33:31

And she just, like I've always

33:33

said, like a point man in a war zone.

33:36

She just like leans over to me and she goes,

33:39

we're gonna want to leave. They're gonna

33:41

fire the cannons and the Confederiti's gonna

33:43

come down. Yep, you don't want to be here

33:45

for that.

33:46

You're gonna say something or see something you don't need

33:48

to have in your life memories exactly.

33:50

And she was like it really was that thing. I was like,

33:52

look at me, look at me. We're getting

33:54

out of here.

33:55

And at that moment I knew she was the one.

33:57

Oh absolutely, I mean I knew before that, but I

34:00

was like, what a what an absolute queen?

34:02

What my soldier queen? And so she

34:04

got me out of there, and then

34:06

you have to take a bus. So we go to the buses

34:09

or whatever. First, get a wristband, you got a riskband.

34:11

We get on the bus and we're sitting behind

34:14

Matt Lafleur because at

34:16

the time there Mike is the cossing game coordinators

34:19

exactly. Mike Lafleur was

34:21

the passing game coordinator at the time. So we're sitting

34:23

behind the Lafloors and I had just gotten

34:25

the.

34:25

Job at Green Bay. His wife, Beria is sitting

34:27

with them.

34:28

I'm sure, yeah, well they lost, they

34:30

had lost. I think he was the head coach when they uh

34:32

that season. Okay, all right, they lost because

34:35

he had just lost the NFC championship game to

34:37

the Niners the week before, because it was Lafleur versus

34:39

Lafleur. It was Mike versus Matt in

34:42

then this championship game the week before or

34:44

two weeks before. So we're sitting on the bus and I

34:46

keep telling Katie I'm such an NFL fan that I'm

34:48

like, dude, we're sitting behind the head coach

34:50

of the Green Bay Packers, and she's like,

34:52

I know, you know, She's like yeah, yeah. And

34:55

then we go to American Airlines Arena

34:57

where the party is.

34:58

Think about this. They rent out the Miami Heat

35:00

Arena.

35:01

It's crazy, dude. This was shregor. This

35:03

is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. To

35:05

this day is one of one of these things in a sad

35:07

way, not in a happy way.

35:09

Everyone's depressed.

35:11

The forty nine ers get there, the bus shows

35:13

up, players are their coaches are there. We're talking

35:15

to the McDaniel and Sala, that's

35:17

who we're hanging out with. We're having like tacos

35:19

with Sala and McDaniel, and it's like, I'm

35:22

believable for you. I'm just like I'm telling

35:24

Mike, like, dude, I'm so proud of you. Took

35:26

my favorite team to the super Bowl. I can't

35:28

believe this. If we were in seventh gradon you would

35:31

have told me this, this would have blown my mind.

35:34

I say, what's up to, Kyle, I'm like talking to a

35:36

couple of people, dude. The Jabberwockies

35:39

come out, Oh here we go and

35:42

dance and they start dancing while

35:45

all of while the forty nine ers

35:47

are just like sadly eating tacos.

35:49

It's one of these moments where I was like, this is so

35:52

funny, and then I was

35:54

so here's how much of a fan I

35:56

am. I love McDaniel. I

35:59

could only I was so sad. I could

36:01

only be there for like maybe

36:03

an hour before I was like, we gotta

36:05

go. Frinch had stayed and got

36:08

a whack out drunk, and I wake

36:10

up the videos of Little Wayne performing.

36:12

It, because you know that loves

36:15

Little Wayne. His son his name is Carter.

36:18

I love it, dude. I was like, dude, they

36:20

see he's so crazy. But it just sitting

36:24

the nuts, sitting there talking

36:26

to a very sad Roberts

36:29

follow who was very sweet. Him and his wife were

36:31

very sweet.

36:32

So now wonderful people.

36:34

He's sitting there talking about the wheel Route,

36:36

the Tyreek hil Ran that got that third and

36:39

twelve that basically wanted to me Chris wass

36:41

yeah, and he's like telling us about

36:43

this, and I'm looking at him and then just

36:46

behind him like dudes in the white

36:48

masks being like all

36:51

I'm like, this is so dude.

36:54

Katie and I kept making fun of the DJ because

36:56

he kept being like, all right, you guys, he

36:58

had a great season and they don't want to

37:00

hear that. They're like, dude, we just we

37:02

hot it and we just lost it. And

37:05

it was like one of those things where I was like, man,

37:08

that experience. I was like,

37:10

how could this was so crazy? And

37:12

then Covid it

37:15

was like, oh.

37:16

Damn, it was j Loo and Shakira.

37:19

The halftime show was great, like it

37:21

was Miami. The week was great, and then Covid

37:24

hits and the whole roadbosted.

37:26

But I shut it down. But now we're back. But

37:28

now we're back up, baby, back up

37:30

four years later.

37:32

The The funny

37:34

one is that I remember I don't know if it was the when they lost

37:36

to the Giants the second time or

37:39

the Eagles, but there's video of

37:41

Gronk just going nuts

37:43

at a Patriots Super Bowl party after they lost,

37:46

Like Gronk just just cutting a rug, like did

37:48

not give it, Like let's just party, like let's

37:50

go. And it's like I love that there's a party

37:52

for the losing tea.

37:54

Every year and you don't realize that every year

37:56

the team you watch lose has to go

37:58

take a bus. I mean, those

38:01

guys have to be like you just let me go back to my family.

38:04

There was like, so can Ebsen salt

38:06

like I'm hurting. We hired flow Rida,

38:08

He's got a prefer Yeah, dude, that jude,

38:11

that would be the worst gig if they were like

38:13

and they're bummed and you're like you

38:17

gotta go do your songs.

38:18

You're like, yeah, all

38:20

right, we're gonna get back to the nine ers. But off of that, have

38:23

I mean, obviously you're a man of great credibility. But I listened

38:25

to Mark Norman and Joe list on their

38:27

podcast.

38:28

And yeah, Norman always Tuesdays of Stories.

38:30

Tuesdays of Story has been a listener for many times.

38:33

I won't say what that that listenership is called,

38:35

because it's very appropriate.

38:36

Cobby, Cobby.

38:39

I would say this though, like Mark always talks about these

38:41

like terrible corporate gigs, but he takes the money

38:43

and does it. Have you done a terrible corporate gig where you're

38:45

like, oh, I'm a crowd where they did not want to hear

38:47

you?

38:47

Dude? The best one was, I

38:50

want to say it was like two thousand

38:53

and twenty one, maybe twenty

38:55

twenty two. I was still on the Bonfire

38:58

and I

39:00

got hired for this gig. That's like in New

39:02

York. I won't do corporates. I just hate him

39:04

because they suck. Yeah, they're not

39:06

fun. You're really at a work event.

39:09

It is basically, if you're doing a corporate event, you're

39:11

doing it for the money. YEP. Very

39:13

rarely can the show actually be good. But

39:15

they're like, listen, it's in New York. It's

39:17

like ten blocks away from some hour. You

39:21

got to do forty minutes. And I was like done.

39:23

The money was great. I was like, awesome, this

39:25

is unbelievable. And I remember, before I'm leaving

39:28

my house, I'm like, you know what, I'm gonna bring a

39:30

button down shirt. I'm gonna bring a

39:32

button down shirt. And this is just in

39:34

case. This is like, dude, this was.

39:36

A gala, black tie

39:38

gala.

39:39

Black tie gala or doctors

39:42

who fight cancer, and I

39:45

had to follow the three of the world's

39:48

best cancer doctors

39:50

shredding on guitar shredding.

39:53

The three of them were just like me.

39:57

And then they go like and now here's

40:00

dance oder and I'm wearing a button

40:02

I'm wearing an open button down with a Denver

40:05

Nuggets. Dude,

40:07

I'm just wearing the old school, uh,

40:10

the old school minor logo of the Nuggets.

40:13

I have that under this. And I went up

40:15

there and for forty minutes.

40:17

So bad ah, did my

40:19

usual set or you like curtailed, you like, try

40:21

to do it for the cancer doctor community.

40:24

I broke at one point and I go, so what you guys

40:26

just gonna have cancer doctors that can that

40:28

can play the guitar. Then my dumb ass and

40:30

then dude, I just I took that. I remember

40:32

the flop sweat even describing this to you.

40:35

I remember what the back of my

40:37

neck, in the back of my head, how sweaty

40:39

I was. And I just remember taking that check

40:41

and being like, this is the last corporate event

40:43

I ever do, and I haven't done one since.

40:45

No, totally, I get it.

40:47

It's funny. I like they used

40:49

to have us do like in house at

40:52

the draft, like hype guy like and

40:54

they would ask us like, you know, good morning footballs in the

40:56

morning, you guys are in town, would you mind it? I did

40:58

it one time and it's like ballast,

41:00

can you hear me? Like shut up? Who do we

41:02

take?

41:02

I'm like, all right, what dude, where

41:06

You're like, oh man, this sucks. It sucks

41:08

because it's trying

41:10

to do comedy for people that don't want it

41:13

is the silliest in the world because

41:15

you're just like silly you guys ever go out of

41:17

like it seems no, they don't want

41:20

it. And by the way, while you're doing it, you

41:22

can feel how lame it is. You're like, yeah. So

41:24

then I got the kitchen and my wife fans with me,

41:26

what are you blah blah blah, And they're like sitting

41:28

there like what mean

41:31

while they're gonna bring a kid out that like beat stage

41:33

seventeen brain cancer, And I.

41:35

Got to like, that's not enough, Like

41:38

I gotta do like that. Yeah, but you ever noticed the

41:40

subway this happens.

41:42

Yeah, I suck I suck it.

41:44

Oh yeah, it's brutal.

41:46

I'm watching the Niners. There're

41:49

no coverage this week, and it's a lot about this season

41:51

and it's great, but like, I don't think people realize. So they

41:54

lose that game in heartbreaking fashion. The

41:56

next year, in Week two during the COVID year,

41:58

which is such a blur now where there is no fans,

42:00

they come to MetLife and Bosa tears up

42:02

his knee. It's a lost season.

42:04

Actually, high ankle spring. Yeah,

42:06

it was everyone got injured.

42:09

I talked to and New talk to McDaniel, sure, but I

42:11

talked to Solid a lot about that season and he's like, that's

42:13

one of my proudest seasons. We won eight games and

42:15

everyone was hurt. We had like eighty four guys hurt,

42:17

and like we got through it. But they went eight and eight, they

42:20

missed, they missed the playoffs. Season.

42:23

You really with that season, though, because I always

42:26

kind of think of for in

42:28

my mind, Saul is gone that season,

42:30

but I forget that he came back and

42:32

we really was the mentality of forty nine

42:34

Ers fans was like, Okay, we'll run it back.

42:37

We have the same team. We're just going to run it

42:39

back. I think the only people we were missing was

42:42

a couple receivers and a couple like

42:45

dbs. But I think for

42:47

the most part we brought back the same crew,

42:50

and I think.

42:50

Like Tart and Ward and all those guys are back

42:52

back, and they drafted kin Law I want to say,

42:54

in the draft, and it was like we got this big beast in the middle,

42:57

like they were ready.

42:58

Yeah, I think we got it. Was

43:00

it was one of those things where it was like, Okay, we're

43:02

going to be back, and then new you go eight and eight

43:04

and it's kind of disappointing.

43:06

So that year's gone. And then the following year,

43:08

you're up in the NFC Champion game

43:10

to the hated team that you've just beaten for years,

43:12

and they come back and win the Rams. And that's Veay

43:15

and Stafford and.

43:16

That was that was the all in year.

43:18

That was l a going, Like they

43:20

got von Miller, they like went out and did

43:22

a bunch of stuff. They were like and again,

43:25

the Ram their whole their

43:27

whole thing was we're all in, We're all

43:29

in, We're all in. And we were like, okay, well

43:31

we beat him bad twice because

43:33

that season people forget that we

43:35

were we were losing, and

43:37

then we beat the out of the Rams.

43:40

We were like, people didn't think we were good again

43:42

in that season. And then there was a Monday night football game.

43:46

The Rams crazy, but I think it was right after they

43:48

got Odell. Also, the just acquired O'Dell

43:51

and everyone was like, oh, they got him instead of the Niners, and the Niners

43:53

kicked the crab at him.

43:54

And then and then that that's that set off

43:57

our run. And then we beat him again later

43:59

in the season and we were like, Okay, we

44:01

go to the playoffs and beat the Cowboys.

44:03

We beat the Packers in the Green Bag game,

44:06

just running a play in motion, one of the coolest plays

44:08

ever.

44:09

And yeah, that might have been I don't know if that was Kyle

44:11

or McDaniel, but that was one of those too crazy. Loved

44:15

it. And then you get

44:17

up and we're like tended the fourth

44:20

It was crazy. And then and then lose and

44:22

then lose to the Rams, which, by the way,

44:24

I don't want to I don't want to completely

44:27

blame the forty nine ers for this, but I think it was part

44:29

of the cause. Was the first time I ever was constipated

44:31

after that game.

44:32

You couldn't concipate it afterwards.

44:34

Yeah, for two weeks I could dig

44:37

I was in Rochester and I was like, why can't

44:39

I It was because my body was so

44:41

intense from that NFC Championship game

44:44

that I couldn't force a duke out for

44:46

two weeks. Oh my god did

44:48

last year?

44:50

Yeah already the whole thing and the Eagles thing and then like

44:53

you know.

44:53

Well, yeah, it starts with I was Katie

44:55

and I were at Week two when Trey

44:58

Lance gets injured on that run We're

45:00

at the Seahawks at Niners.

45:02

Week two that he had ran like eleven

45:04

times in the first first corps or something, and

45:06

then again.

45:07

And then yeah, and then he goes down and I was like,

45:09

that's bad. That looks real bad, and Katie was like, probably

45:12

nothing bad. And then that was the season ending

45:14

injury.

45:14

Jimmy comes in gets hurt and then obviously

45:17

Perty goes on his run. But then you lose, and it's

45:19

like there's this tension all off season

45:21

between Eagles and Niners, and it was real. The Niners

45:23

felt, like John Lynch said it publicly like that

45:25

doesn't count, like that that you dismissing

45:27

it, like that wasn't the real, Like you beat us?

45:29

Ye did? Do you know what the most badass quote

45:31

of that No one ever brings up this quote, but it

45:33

was the most bad ass in the world, and

45:36

it really it really fired me up about brock

45:38

Perdy is. I

45:40

think it was months after the game someone

45:43

asked him, They said on that when

45:46

when Reddick hit you, Yeah, what

45:49

were you seeing? And he said,

45:51

I saw are you wide open for a seventy

45:53

yard touchdown? And he said that, and I was

45:55

like the whole I

45:58

was good so far. I was getting so fired

46:00

up. I was like that Bertie, he just

46:02

it was and by the way he didn't say it like a talking

46:04

away. Yeah, he doesn't happen to He's

46:06

like, I'll tell you what I saw. I saw. I saw Brandon

46:08

Ayuk wide open for a seventy yard touchdown.

46:11

Good.

46:12

And then now it takes all that and then

46:14

these two major comebacks, and it's like, I'm

46:16

talking to you on Thursday, Super Bowl Sunday. Is

46:19

it anxiety? Is it excitement?

46:22

Because I feel like there's so much baggage

46:24

and of course, you guys haven't won since you were

46:26

a teenager in.

46:27

Ninety two eleven. There was ninety four,

46:29

Yeah, the ninety four seas, the ninety four season.

46:33

Seventy fifth anniversary with the retro jerseys, which.

46:35

Yeah, I'll tell you what, man,

46:37

I think after that NFC Championship

46:40

game, there is there

46:44

is a creepy level of calmness

46:47

because I think like the

46:49

forty nine Ers have responded in

46:52

both of their playoff games in a

46:54

way that I think makes forty nine Ers

46:56

fans comfortable on a deep level. I

46:58

think, you know, the defense

47:01

stepped up when they were giving up. We were just giving

47:03

up all the run, all the rushing yards

47:05

in the Nfcampionship game. And then

47:07

to watch Kyle and Steve

47:10

Wilkes and all these guys

47:12

make these halftime adjustments and

47:14

come out and you're like, oh, this

47:16

is watching the Patriots

47:18

as we all did for twenty years, be a

47:21

dynasty. The thing that you noticed

47:23

was that Belichick was untouchable

47:26

after his halftime adjustment. Was it when

47:29

he would come in, he would just figure out what

47:31

the problem was and there was a solution to it.

47:33

And I think that's where I was the most nervous

47:35

this entire season was halftime of the NFC

47:37

Championship game, because I'm going, can Kyle

47:40

make the adjustments? And they make the

47:42

changes, and then you see him come out. We

47:44

get that field goal on the first drive

47:47

and you're like, that's not enough. We're down a lot more than

47:49

that. And then you just see

47:51

Wilkes makes the adjustments. We start stopping

47:54

their run. We start, you know, and.

47:55

Then they start dropping some passes that

47:57

that was big.

47:58

You get that off the face mask play. And

48:01

I saw someone online say, finally

48:04

Kyle gets his own version of the catch.

48:07

Said, Kyle gets his version because

48:10

the EDLM catch called the.

48:11

Lady bub catch because afterwards an Aaron Andrews interviewed

48:13

Ayuki. I saw a lady bug this morning.

48:15

I love dude. I love Ayuk. And

48:19

you know, for people that don't

48:21

realize Kyle was the offensive coordinator of the

48:23

Falcons when they lost to the Patriots with that Edelman

48:26

catch, He's kind of always had things like that

48:28

go against him. So to have something

48:30

like that go with him was like this kind

48:33

of like, hey, let's go. Let's

48:35

go, guys.

48:36

Look I gave I gave the stat this

48:38

morning on Good Morning Football. If they

48:40

come back from a seven point deficit in

48:43

the Super Bowl, Kyle Shanahan

48:45

will be the first coach in NFL

48:48

history to come back from a seven point second half

48:50

despicit in a divisional round game, a Championship

48:52

round game, and a Super Bowl. Could you imagine the narrative

48:55

suddenly being Kyle Shanahan clutch

48:57

second half quarterback.

48:59

What has been the knock on him the whole

49:01

time? So I think,

49:03

honestly, with this Super Bowl, just as a forty

49:05

nine understand letting go, I'm just letting

49:08

go and I'm just going to enjoy it. I just I

49:11

love this team. I love the way

49:13

they've been built. I love the way

49:15

that Kyle went and got Steve Wilkes,

49:17

who, in my opinion, should

49:19

have been the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Sure,

49:21

so he gets he gets passed over

49:23

for that job. Great, Now you got a guy

49:26

that's fired up. You got a guy that wants to prove something.

49:28

He was up in the booth. Then we hit those

49:30

three game losing skid

49:33

before the bye week, and

49:35

now he's down on the field. And now he even

49:37

admits like, I love having those guys fired up. I

49:39

love seeing him. I love we lose

49:42

Halfonga. Who's my guy, He's

49:45

our, he's our, he's our new Ronnie lot Yep,

49:49

you lose him, and you have people step

49:51

up. All

49:53

these guys step up and just play their

49:56

ass off.

49:57

Travarious Ward is a corner, but he was maybe the

49:59

best corner in football this.

50:00

Year, Travarius Ward. And now he's playing

50:02

his old team. Yeah, you know. Now he's playing

50:04

the Chiefs, and and I'm just I'm

50:06

very excited for this game. I'm very excited

50:08

for this game. I hope it's a great

50:11

game, but I just, man, I don't want

50:13

to do that thing where I'm like.

50:17

A measured approach to this and it's okay,

50:20

so questions when when do you

50:22

arrive to Vegas?

50:24

Get in on Saturday. So for

50:27

those of you that don't know, UH going

50:30

to a super Bowl, you have to

50:32

know people that have hotel

50:34

rooms. Because I don't

50:36

make enough money to afford a hotel

50:39

room in Las Vegas for the super Bowl.

50:41

I don't make enough money to buy a

50:43

super Bowl ticket. So this is all

50:46

friendship, and this is all like Lee's

50:49

hook it up, Lee's So.

50:51

About a month ago, Shane

50:55

Shane Gillis texted me and he was like, you

50:57

all got a super Bowl and that is during

51:00

the divisional round. During

51:02

the divisional round. Now, I

51:04

don't drink. I quit drinking about

51:06

eleven years ago. I

51:08

am vibed in other ways, so

51:11

I don't drink alcohol. Shane

51:13

obviously drinks alcohol so much so that he's the new

51:15

face of bud Light.

51:16

It's a bud Light of his last thing.

51:18

I love it. I love it. Good for him. I

51:20

love that guy. So Shane Shane

51:22

texts me you are to super

51:25

Bowl, and I said.

51:25

Because of your Niners fandom or because just football.

51:28

Just football. He just wants to hang. He just wants to He

51:30

just wants to brow to hang. You know,

51:32

we don't see each other a lot anymore because he lives in Austin,

51:35

and so I was like, yeah, dude, But

51:37

he texted me and he's like, do you want to go to the Super Bowl?

51:39

I said, listen, Shane, if it's the forty nine ers,

51:42

one thousand percent, of course, no brainer.

51:44

If it's not the forty nine ers, I appreciate

51:47

the offer, but no, I don't want to go.

51:49

Yeah, because if you don't

51:51

drink alcohol, Las Vegas is useless,

51:54

useless. It's a useless town if

51:56

you do not drink alcohol. If you've

51:59

been there before, if you've been there

52:01

and drank and now you don't drink, it

52:03

especially sucks. So I'm like, dude,

52:06

I'm trying to go to Vegas and watch everyone

52:08

get blacked out and watch what the

52:10

Lions and the Ravens like. I'm

52:12

not I'm kind of not down for that. Shane

52:15

being Shane being like After

52:18

I say that, he's like, it's pretty weird you turned

52:20

down super Bowl ticket. You just keep saying that to me.

52:22

Turned it turned it down, You turned it down.

52:24

That's what he saying. He keeps going, pretty crave, pretty

52:27

weird you turned out super Bowl ticket so he gave

52:29

his tickets away. I think I think he's

52:31

bringing his dad in a couple buddies he might bring.

52:33

I think McCusker and they

52:35

just were on Rogan by the way, excellent. Yeah,

52:38

they're the best mssp uh sot

52:41

of tone to everybody. And

52:43

so I said this to Shane.

52:46

I go, listen, I did turn down Super Bowl tickets,

52:48

but will you let me crash on

52:50

your hotel floor if the forty nine

52:53

Ers go? All I need

52:55

to do is I just needed a floor in a

52:57

pillow. Yeah, and I'm gold school,

53:00

old school dude. I'll pull my arms inside my t

53:02

shirt totally like that.

53:04

I've done the bat Like.

53:05

Actually, you know what, dude, I wish I would show you the text I

53:07

call bathtub. I go, dude, if anyone

53:09

else coming, I'm sleeping bathtub. And

53:13

Chane's such a big sports fan and he's such a

53:15

sweety pie on the inside that when

53:18

the forty nine Ers won, he texted

53:20

me and was like, dude,

53:22

you're coming, You're coming, right, And yes,

53:25

I'm like, I'm coming and kai crash at your hotel.

53:27

He's like, it is pretty crazy. You turnnuts.

53:32

It is always with it and then finally

53:34

he was like, yeah, dude, if you want to crash, you

53:36

can crash at my hotel. And

53:38

then Michael Chay, a lot

53:40

of people don't know big forty nine Ers fan.

53:42

Is he really?

53:43

Yeah? So he grew up in New York City.

53:45

He's a one day Michael Chay.

53:47

Sure, he's a forty nine Er fan and the best

53:49

forty nine in the most Michael Chay way possible.

53:52

He's a forty nine Ers fan because his older brother

53:54

was a Giants fan and it tasted him

53:56

off to cheer for the forty nine

53:58

Ers. He's just an antagonist.

54:00

I love that.

54:00

So he's he's a lifelong forty nine

54:03

Er fan. So we text about games all the time, and

54:05

we've talked about going in to a playoff

54:07

game, but blah blah blah blah. But you

54:10

know, he said, Hey, I'm gonna ask SNL

54:13

and NBC if they can get me some tickets.

54:16

Sports is a huge partnership with the NFL.

54:19

And I was like, dude, I was like, if

54:21

you can, please get me one,

54:24

and he's like, dude, you

54:26

got it. And then and then

54:28

so I bought a plane ticket I bought you know,

54:30

I got Shane to say I could stay and

54:33

he's.

54:33

Got to tell room tickets and I'll tell you if you go with

54:35

Jay, and it's with the NBC thing, like you're gonna get to go

54:37

to the tailgate, You're gonna get to all the cool stuff

54:39

that comes.

54:40

See that, because Chay this week was like we

54:42

got him, and I was like, I'm

54:45

very excited and I have very good friends.

54:47

I'm a very lucky man who has good friends that are

54:49

gonna do.

54:50

Too quick ones be for we wrap Which jersey will

54:52

you wear or do you not wear jerseys?

54:53

I don't wear I have jerseys at

54:56

home.

54:58

I kind of think like an Armstead jersey would be pretty

55:00

bad ass for this.

55:00

I mean, he's the best. I hope he wear wins Walter Payton

55:03

May of the Year. But I

55:05

as every as every as

55:08

every true fan nodes, I

55:11

already know what I'm wearing game day. It's the

55:13

exact outfit I warder in the NFC Championship Games.

55:15

The persitions were the same as I think, underwear, socks,

55:17

everything.

55:19

It has not been washed, Yeah, it

55:21

has been folded, it to

55:23

the side, yeah, and it will be put into

55:26

a backpack and taken to Las Vegas.

55:28

And I will wear exactly what I wore when

55:30

the forty nine ers came back on the Lions Elliot.

55:33

That's a I will be if you if

55:35

if they if they cut to Michael ch during

55:37

the Super Bowl and you see my big dumb

55:39

head next to him, and you go, oh, it's

55:41

so to wearing. It's the same thing I ordered in the NFC

55:44

Championship game. So you and during

55:46

the Backers game and it

55:48

just doesn't change. It just doesn't chang.

55:51

My last thing, I was in CVS.

55:53

I live in Brooklyn. I was in CVS on Henry

55:56

Street and I'm there and I'm buying

55:58

like laundry detergent or something, and

56:01

I hear this very familiar voice behind me, being very

56:03

kind to the attendant talking about how to do

56:05

the service, you

56:07

know, check out thing. And I'm like, I know

56:09

that voice sit home from TV. I'm like, who is that

56:11

of a grand Paul Giamatti.

56:14

The man, He's the man, He's

56:16

the man. Yeah, there's no one, there's

56:19

there's like that Billion's

56:21

cast. Every single one of them

56:24

just absolutely ruled. But Paul

56:26

was a guy I only had, I think in seven

56:28

seasons, I have seen one scene with

56:31

him uh No, I had to see like

56:33

two scenes where he walks by me and like looks

56:35

or whatever. But dude, I'm gonna tell you right now.

56:37

At table reads, I

56:40

would always find a time to go talk

56:42

to Paul and try to make him laugh because he's got

56:44

an unbelievable sense of humor. He is

56:46

so down to earth, he is just

56:48

the man. And then they yell action and you're

56:50

like, oh, you're one of the greatest of all time. It's

56:52

not even I don't know how to act. I'm

56:54

a comic. That's just bullshitting show.

56:58

But I was just learning how to act when I was on Billions.

57:00

When you watch Damian Lewis, when

57:02

you watch Paul Giamatti, when you watch Maggie

57:04

Sift or David Costable act like,

57:06

Oh, that's how it's

57:09

done. I feel like one of those. I feel like

57:11

one of those. I feel like one of those college

57:13

basketball players that started playing tight end my

57:15

sis. You know what I mean. Oh,

57:17

I don't have football Allie.

57:19

Cooks play on the football,

57:22

but I'll figure it out.

57:23

Yeah, dude. I was like Jimmy Graham. I was like, dude,

57:25

I don't know. I can jelled for it. If you want to jump

57:27

with the football I can, And that was that's

57:30

how I felt. I just felt like a like a basketball

57:32

player that was trying to learn football

57:34

knowledge from these guys that are lifers. But there. Yeah,

57:37

he's Paul Giamatti is the man. So good.

57:39

All right, well, app so appreciate

57:41

you coming on. You've got a busy day, real quick for the

57:43

listeners your podcast and where

57:45

your tour dates are in the upcoming months. Because

57:47

I'll say it again, I said, after I saw

57:49

you, Burt Kreisher had his big tour and

57:52

there were you guys were in Queen's at Forest Hills

57:54

and you and with the sun out still you

57:57

and Shane Gillis absolutely stole

57:59

the show. And I'm like, I will follow Shane and

58:01

Soda to any stand up back that they do. You

58:03

guys both crushed it so hard that night.

58:05

Yeah, that will fun. Man going back to back like

58:08

that. He's the man. I'm so happy for him. I'm

58:10

so excited for SNL on thes

58:13

Yeah, we were tecching about it.

58:15

So because I'm like mister like NFL

58:19

Network and I've been on this Chiefs ride, I've become

58:21

very friendly with like Paul Rudd and

58:23

Eric stone Street and those guys. And I've gotten

58:25

introduced to Heidi Gardner, who's unbelievable

58:28

and she's a huge KC fan and

58:30

she has the open invite. She's like, anytime you want to come

58:33

to us, and now I'm sure it's one time only. I

58:35

hit her up. She's like, I got you, so I think I'm gonna

58:37

go. And you love what I'm taking. I think I'm taking Cliff Kingsbury

58:39

because he's a huge Shane Gillis fan.

58:41

Tool Here's what

58:43

people don't know. Shane Gillis

58:45

is, I mean number one. He's the best comedian

58:47

in the world right now. Him and Nate Bargetsia at the two

58:50

best comedians. They're also my two best friends, best

58:52

friends. Yeah, yeah, that's pretty sick. That's

58:56

my dog on a chee toy f y. That's

58:58

why the crinkling sound is.

59:01

Shane's friends with so many NFL

59:03

players.

59:03

He says. Gabe Davis is one of his best friends.

59:06

Uh CMC. He texts

59:08

with CMC all the time. They're

59:11

like, He's like, yeah, CMC's fired up for this game.

59:13

He'll text me and I'll be like, oh, yeah,

59:15

that's awesome. Yeah, Gabe to hit the celly, gave

59:18

hit the selly that he wanted.

59:20

It's so funny, like you know, if

59:22

you don't know what how It's like Shane Gillis was like, I'm

59:24

going to give you a crazy meme that I saw on the internet

59:26

and if you score a touchdown, you've got to reenact it. And Gabe

59:28

Davis did it in a game.

59:29

It's Game's demand. Yeah, that's so good. That's

59:31

awesome. Yeah, I'm very excited. I'm gonna

59:33

get there.

59:34

You can be on tour that weekend.

59:35

I'm in Cleveland, so I'm gonna miss it, but I'm

59:37

gonna absolutely watch it. I'm

59:39

gonna I mean, I love Chaine and I'm

59:42

going to be seeing him obviously this weekend

59:44

in Vegas. I'm going to go down to Austin. I'm

59:47

doing Rogan's Club in March. But everyone

59:50

was like, we gotta see S and L and You're like, yeah, but I also

59:52

have to pay my rent. So I have five shows

59:54

in Cleveland, so that I'm

59:57

definitely very excited, and I think he's going to do incredible.

59:59

I think it's podcast is Soda Your

1:00:01

last Midst episode great with Chad Daniels,

1:00:04

who is one of my favorites.

1:00:05

FA Comedian out There a

1:00:07

new episode with Carmen Lynch about her parents

1:00:10

meeting. It's just basically, man, I learned

1:00:12

when I left the bonfire and need a place to

1:00:14

go to plug my dates, but also I just want to

1:00:17

place to hang out, so I got to have you on there.

1:00:19

I'd love to hear about NFL stories.

1:00:21

I got real stuff that I you

1:00:23

know, I don't want to get you fired, but I do want

1:00:25

to know I got good.

1:00:28

Yeah, you do it there, I'll do it. I'll do it. I did

1:00:30

barstool last week and I was kind of tight

1:00:32

left a little bit, and then I maybe regret that. Should have tried

1:00:34

just opened the bag because that was a bad audience.

1:00:36

Let it, dude, let

1:00:38

it loose. But dude, I appreciate you having me

1:00:40

on man and obviously Bang

1:00:43

Bang Niner Gang get

1:00:46

that revenge baby, Good

1:00:48

luck, dude.

1:00:49

Thanks dude.

1:01:07

That's a true fan. That's Dan Soder. I'm

1:01:09

telling you, I wasn't just blowing his tires

1:01:12

up. I think his stand up. Have you watched his stand up?

1:01:14

Are I haven't. I've

1:01:17

heard about him a lot, but yeah, no, I haven't.

1:01:19

I feel like working with you on the show. I

1:01:21

am finding so many more stand up comedians.

1:01:23

I mean this guys, he's amazing. His podcast

1:01:26

amazing and if you just could tell, he's just got a great

1:01:28

voice and he is hilarious. But

1:01:30

he also is diehard Niners fan. I know him

1:01:33

because I became really friendly

1:01:35

with Mike McDaniel. And the first thing McDaniel

1:01:38

said to me when we became friends, probably like seven

1:01:40

years ago, like my best friend lives in New York

1:01:43

and I'm like who He's like Dan Soder.

1:01:45

I'm like, I don't know who. That is great and he's like, he's

1:01:47

a stand up comedian. I'm like, your best friend's a stand up

1:01:49

comedian. Now it's like seven years ago. Now McDaniel's

1:01:51

the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. They are

1:01:54

legitimately best friends, and

1:01:56

Soda is one of the top stand up comics.

1:01:58

It's pretty cool story. I

1:02:00

feel for him, I feel for the Niners fans. It's

1:02:02

been a wild ride. They're back

1:02:04

at the precipice and you could tell he

1:02:07

says he's feeling very zen, but like he

1:02:09

come up short again. That's like a tough pell to swallow.

1:02:11

Dude, and he had he had some

1:02:14

quiet intensity when he was

1:02:16

like doing the Bang Bang Iron Gang. But yeah,

1:02:18

he led us slip a few times. He's

1:02:20

excited. Gosh,

1:02:23

I mean that I had no idea that
