This is Roger Smith's story...

I was 15 years old, homeless, and a high school dropout when my stepfather took me in and taught me about sales. I was able to turn my life around and eventually became the CEO of an insurance company. I've had three great mentors who have taught me a lot about leadership. The most important things I've learned are to be visionary, to have influence, and to inspect systems. I've also learned that it's important to be bold enough to ask and to be humble enough to listen and be invested in people. As a leader, it's my responsibility to make sure I believe in myself and my vision and to get people out of their comfort zone.

In this episode, you will learn the following:1. The importance of having a strong belief system as a leader 2. The importance of being able to get people out of their comfort zone 3. The importance of being a visionary leader

[00:05:13] - As a leader. Be bold enough to ask why and humble enough to receive what it is that they said many times. Leaders don't want to listen as they have their own path, and they don't listen to others. Don't be so stuck on yourself that you're not willing to listen.

[00:06:14] - Roger has had three great mentors in his life. Mark McAndrew, who was the CEO of the holding company, taught Roger how to deal with negative situations in a logical manner and how to respond to them in a positive way. Roger believes that it's everyone's responsibility to find the right mentors. After finding a great mentor, you want to take a note so that you can go ahead and implement the things that you learn from the experience, because you don't know where all of a sudden, these words of wisdom come from, and you just want to have them embedded in your mind.

[00:12:05] - Entrepreneurs see themselves as leaders, but they don't realize that they are leading so much more than that. Entrepreneurs are in a position of influence, so it automatically comes with that position. It's a responsibility that we shoulder, and it's good to shoulder.

[00:15:20] - In his journey through leadership. What have been the hardest obstacles to overcome? For him, it was getting people out of their comfort zone. When he was running the company, he did some things that other leaders didn't do, but he knew that if he did this, they would grow the company.

[00:18:44] - #Speakeasy Podcast listeners should take notes when listening to the conversations they are part of. [00:19:36] - This episode has been amazing. It's the beginning of a new career for some people, but it's not their day one, they are going to come up against some obstacles, but there's always someone out there that has the answer to the questions that they have. Roger Smith's philosophy is to burn all the bridges and move forward.

[00:22:24] - Make sure that you take at least one thing from this episode and take that with you to the next person. Nothing is as good as it seems. But nothing is as bad as it appears that will stick with him as he goes into the higher levels.
