The events of March 11th in Japan were one of the worst tragedies in that nation’s history. An earthquake larger than it was believed to be possible hit the nation, followed by a devastating tsunami that has left as many as 25,000 people dead and a quarter million homeless. The two events led to a disaster at a nuclear reactor in Fukujima, and a month after the disaster that plant has yet to be contained.

The events in Japan have affected the Magic world. Grand Prix Kobe, originally scheduled for shortly after the earthquake hit, was rescheduled for April. Pro Tour Nagoya, scheduled for this summer, has been publicly stated by Wizards to be continued as planned by this past week a group of Hall of Fame players from France started a Facebook group to question the wisdom of this move. Today I talk to Raphael Levy, one of the founding members, about why he’s decided not to attend at this point in time and why he thinks other players should consider not going as well.

A word of caution to listeners, due to the fact Raphael lives in France some technical difficulties forced us to record the podcast in a fashion different than usual. As a result, some mic popping can be heard throughout the interview.

The events in Japan are serious indeed, and no one should travel somewhere that makes them feel uncomfortable. Travel warnings by country for Japan vary, however, and many are less harsh than the French authorities Raphael talked about in the interview. The Pro Tour is still some time off, and all credible reports indicate the radiation concerns from the Fukushima reactor outside of the surrounding areas are minimal. I’ll be headed there myself in a week for Grand Prix Kobe, and I have no concerns for my safety.
