This week on The Terminal Hip Hop podcast Rvfio and KopeK discuss Eminem’s surprise album “Kamikaze” featuring disses and digs aimed at Vince Staples, Joe Budden, Lil Yachty, Lil Xan, Lil Pump, Charlamagne tha God, Donald Trump, Ja Rule, Token, Migos, Machine Gun Kelly, Drake, DJ Akademiks, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Lord Jamar. It also contains nods and references to Logc, Hopsin, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar.Given Em’s newfound desire to “bring back the game” in the form of traditional rap badmouthing, MGK’s response with Rap Devil, and the tragic and sudden overdose of Mac Miller, we decided it would be a good week to talk about the role of white people in hip hop’s history and in rap moving forward. We also take a dig down the rabbit hole to look at the origins of hip hop, as pioneered by black and latino DJs and MCs at block parties in the 1970s Bronx and trace its evolution through “new school” golden era hiphop, 90s westcoast/eastcoast rap, 2000s alternative rap and crunk, through the 2010 trap craze and into the modern sound. Then KopeK digs further to explore the origins of 808 drums, the traditional drumset that preceded it, the Rhodes piano and the actual piano, and the relatively short history of multitrack recording. It turns out, no modern genre would be anything like it is without some ancient Turkish warriors or bad Japanese electronic music companies. The show comes to a close with Rvfio’s Music Video Corner as he takes a look at Eminem’s Fall music video, and the videos for VENGEANCE by Denzel Curry and REEL IT IN by Anime.
